The Lion King show was brilliant....couldn't fault it. Worth a visit. Sat in the grand circle and seats could be more comfortable with more leg room. Rather cramped for people with a new hip or knee.

went to see Madagascar with my 2 year old. lots of stairs to climb to get to our seats in upper circle, no baby change facilities available for us on the night. Lovely venue. but not practical if you have very young children.
I know this is an old and rather historic venue but they need to rip the seating out and start again, extremely uncomfortable!!. I have been here many times over the years to watch comedians, productions and the odd Xmas panto but it is never my first choice purely because of the seating. Staff brilliant and good local parking with plenty to do in Bristol before or after a show.
As many have said great historical place but extortionate drinks and small uncomfortable seats. Not much can be done about latter. Staff nice. Saw a concert as Bristol has no proper (large) concert venues at the moment....whose fault is that Marvin?!?!?
What a great theatre have seen many shows here beautiful inside in traditional red and gold staff always polite and kind .you dont need to travel to london wait to the show comes here you wont be disapointed
Quite a good place, not just for celebrities to go to, but also for regular people. I enjoyed watching Cinderella here, though its not really my type of film, Gok Wan and the other man, can't remember his name, were good.
We went to the box office to book tickets for Matilda. The gentleman who served us was very helpful, advised us about what seats to get. Much better than booking on line.
The Bodyguard last night was AMAZING to say the least. Alexandra Burke & actors, dancers & people behind the seen's were Fantastic. The hours trying to park not so good. But didnt let it take away from the show. Everyone were up dancing & clapping. Best show I've seen. Well done. x
This is a review of the Hippodrome and not the musical I watched as that was pants. The Hippodrome is a lovely authentic looking theatre with all the old style service, doesn't look like it has changed much over the last 100 years and because of that it has a magical feel to it.
I've been coming to this theatre since I was small, I'll be the atmosphere here at all the shows I've been too, most recently the pantomime Rick Whittington with Shane Ritchie, we were in the grand circle but still had a fab view of the show, brilliant afternoon.
What can I say, this was brilliant. My wife is in a wheelchair and the assistance she had was amazing. Big thanks to Ginny who was so kind and helpful. The theatre itself is beautiful and the lion King was the most gob smacking production. What a brilliant day out.
This is a point against the establishment's rules.
Anyone under 16 cannot enter alone. This is very unfair for younger people who would like to go to the theatre. Younger people should be encouraged to attend. The reason my 15 year old cannot attend is on 'grounds of health and safety'. How pathetic an excuse.
Perhaps I should encourage my children to wander the streets. Health and safety... come on! Really? Under 11, or possibly 13 years, old I might understand.
Dear Hippodrome, change your silly rules and encourage, sorry I should say allow, younger people to visit the hippodrome. Your rules are ridiculous and health and safety as an excuse is pathetic at best.
Great Theatre. Used to London and Cambridge, but this was brilliant. Stairs a little bit too much for the older generation...but you kinda expect that from theatres. As far as Shane and the gang goes. Brilliant performance.
What a wonderful venue on our doorstep!! Always well maintained and kept clean. Great range of productions always displayed. Pricing of drinks and snacks a little over inflated sadly. Lovely piece of history.
Rock of ages. Good enough, but the supporting cast outshone the 'star'. This is an old building, but has good shows throughout the year. Best leg room is in the stalls
Show was great. Book of Mormon. Big theatre. Old small uncomfortable seating. Good ticketing system. We were in (very) expensive grand circle seats but I think the stalls would be good. Or if you can get a deal on a box!
Staff very helpful with my wheelchair based mother. Expensive snacks, to be expected in an establishment such as this, however not as pushy with merchandise as previous occasions/places. Very enjoyable experience (and the production was excellent also)
Calendar girls the musical was excellent much better than l dared hope, though with a cast like that I knew it would be good. Whether you've seen the film or the play The musical is a must see. Vibrant, funny and daring!
Went to see The lion king last night and I couldn't recommend more. It.was stunning,,.bllew me away. I'm not a. Big theatre goer so. I can't compare the hippodrome to much else but it has a nice historic feel to it and staff were very helpful there, I'm heavily pregnant and I found the staff very lovely and helpful.
Great great show, but otherwise I had a nightmare experience. Took my mum for a special big birthday treat to see this show (the bodyguard) and as it was a special occasion, I booked the executive suite because, according to the agent I booked with, the suite was right behind the stall area. I'm disabled and usually use a wheelchair, however, there were no seats available in the wheelchair section. So I had to use crutches, which the agent knew. The Suite was NOT just behind the stalls, it's at the top of their building. The distance was difficult for me, never mind the number of stairs. My poor mum's special experience was to be worrying about me, rather than it being the relaxed experience I'd hoped for. Yes, I made a complaint.
Air conditioning very cold towards the back - ask for blankets. Not enough toilets. Well ushered and great view of stage from stalls.be aware snacks and drinks are MASSIVELY expensive.
1st time going. Absolutely brilliant. Watched lion king. Seats are a bit firm for me. The place was exceptional busy. All staff very friendly and helpful. Clean tidy. As were the toilet facilities.
Went to see Rocky horror. The velodrome has great acoustics we had the cheap seats and could hear perfectly. Show was great beer was reasonably priced. Over a great night. Highly recommend for all.
Nice venue. Relatively comfy seating. Theatre staff were helpful in finding seats etc. Bar staff not really friendly and waiting area too cramped and hot. Certainly would go again but will be taking a hand fan and bottled water next time. Drinks are dearer than i expected
I recently went to the Bristol Hippodrome to watch the Lion king; which was fantastic to watch! The reason for 4 stars. We were in the bar area for a drink, before we went in. And one of the people who was severing us got our order completely wrong; and we only ordered 3 drinks. The second thing, is that the smell in the gents toilets were awful, so they could do with a very good clean, or something in the toilets to take the smell away. I couldn't comment on the ladies, as I didn't go in the ladies.
First time here, but of a theatre virgin, watched lion king and I'm hooked, it was amazing. I was right at the top with my family, soooo look many steps and the seats were very uncomfortable, like sitting on a school balance beam, but you deal with it. I would still go again.
Loin King was flawless and amazing, the public/audience were awful. Stuck up, with absolutely no care for other people's viewing pleasure. Talking, rustling packets and moving /kicking the backs of the chairs. These people just ruin it for others. Will get it on dvd next time!!!
Wonderful theatre, full of character. Always am very impressed by the shows I've seen. Wide range of productions on offer: stand up, musicals, plays. Upper circle seating legroom leaves a lot to be desired though so if you're on the taller side I'd recommend sitting elsewhere.
Watched lion king which was 10/10 but the theatre itself was really cramped we seated in the grand circle, the seats have no leg room for tall people im 6'1 and had a hard time lasting through the show and the seats themselves are uncomfortable and to close together, the veiw was brilliant and the sound was perfect.
Was sat in the upper circle to watch the lion king, although the view was good , the bench style seating was really uncomfortable, the seat were hard , it was cramped, and not enough leg room, and I m only 5ft3in , it was also unbearably hot, and this was in November! A lovely theatre apart from that, but I will definitely not be sitting in the upper circle again.
Beautiful character and presence in the whole of the hippodrome, that 'past days' feeling but still kept and maintained well! The Christmas pantomime (Dick Whittington) once again a delight to watch! Always worth coming here for a special treat or to enjoy with the family!
It's a lovely old theatre. To some it may look abit tatty in places but I think that it just adds to 5he character of the place. There are always big shows on recently we saw Lion King. In the past we've seen War Horse, rocky horror, chubby Brown and others there too.
There are two sides to the Hippodrome, the show you go to see and then the venue itself. The Hippodrome gets some quality shows like the Lion King. The venue is a period theatre, with its own "charm", seat quality and view vary depending on what you're prepared to pay. Decor is a bit "tired" and needs some "TLC" in places and that's reflected in the rating.
What an amazing hall, a lot bigger than I thought. It's old and there are signs of that like the limited toilets which are small and cramped but the overall feel and the staff make this place fab
Beautiful building but flipping hard seats. Hardly any leg room. Got a sore bum afterwards! Very uncomfortable but great atmosphere! Motown was awesome but hard to hear what they were saying when they weren't singing.
Had a lovely meal & great seats for Kinky Boots enjoyed the show but thought sound quality could have been better as both my husband & I had difficulty in understanding what was being said.
Traditional theatre near Bristol waterfront. Great for the big shows that tour and also for your traditional Christmas panto etc. Old Vic if your looking for something more contemporary.
A big drome full of hippos. I went along to watch them wallow for a few hours with a lager in my hand. I fed one a freshly caught trout and it nearly took my arm off. The wife took to the big beasts immediately and jumped in the mud with them for a swim.
