Man I never get tired of this amazing tea house! It's so busy I had to give my extra seat to a stranger but that's ok. Great tea and food. Zen surroundings despite the crowd. I'll be back again soon!!

I like the ambience of this place. It's a cute little tea shop run by a tea enthusiast. You can find details about 20-30 different kinds of tea's from all around the world. I do recommend their 500 mile chai.

I didn't know until I went to the Chinese Gardens that they serve the same Tea. I've been coming here for years. The leaf room and Cafe are both fantastic.

The Cafe is a place I've calmly bantered with company, brought family and even dates. Its very comfortable.

Yep

We've been going here since they opened in 1997-1998. It was an amazing place then, filled with lustrous Indian raw silks on the cushions and amazing decor. The food was mainly Indian, and had a lot of Indian combo plates, like the stuffed parantha plate with salad, raita, and tamarind chutney. The Tea Shop next door had Indian silk teapot covers for sale and a Japanese-style tea room. Simply beautiful. It was one of my favorite places to go in all of Portland.

Twenty years later...the Tao of Tea is STILL very good, as is the Tea Shop next door. Everything is a-la-carte now on the menu, and it's less Indian-focused...more pan-Asian now.
After twenty years, the restaurant has lost some of its luster, and the Tea Shop doesn't usually offer handmade beauties from India any more. Please bring them back!

Personally, I'm hoping that the owners will rejuvenate Tao back to ALL the splendor that it used to have, along with the menu! But then, I was born and raised in Portland, and I miss all our wonderful quirky places that have all-but-disappeared thanks to the insane developers, billionaires who bought up large swathes of Portland, and the driving force behind it all: the recent tsunami of transplants.

I love this place. Like being in a tea shanty in Rishikesh, but with more options. I saw one guy left a review that he waited too long and got cranky and left.... This is not a fast food restaurant, or a place I would go if I were in a rush. Its all about enjoying the ambience; the wonderful teas and snacks are well worth being patient for.

Tons of delicious teas to explore in a cute bungalow style setting. Can get crowded which of course slows down service, but the space never feels cramped. Perfect choice for a leisurely afternoon.
The sweet setup continues at their retail store next door, where you'll find everything you need to make more of your favorite tea at home.

Love everytime I go here and just keep going back. The ambience, the service, the food (I've tried most of the food on the menu) and the 509 mile chai! Don't forget to try the lentils, and get something to dip in to the lentils with...great place to meet friends after work and a quick snack!

When Stumptown nearby was closed Tao of Tea let me get my caffeine fix with their excellent chai. Their selection of other teas are all high quality and authentic and their food while mostly small plates it impressive and culturally on point to suit whatever tea you match it with.

This tea house is very eclectic looking. Or is small and often crowded. I've had to wait for a table in the afternoon. The tea is excellent and there is a large selection to choose from. They offer a few milk and non-milk options to go with your tea along with a few different sweeteners. I usually order a chai with oat or almond milk. They have both caffeine and non-caffeine teas.

Steven Smith is also Steven Smith, but ... If you want to buy a lot of tea and you like oriental tea, you should buy it here. They sell really good cars at much cheaper prices. The food is also delicious in the tea room.

Love their 500 Mile chai. Closest to milk tea from India in Portland area. They have some nice snacks to munch on while you enjoy your tea. Love their samosa with chickpea. The place has Portland vibe and is a bit on the pricey side.

Huge selection of tea with a very calm atmosphere. I love to come here to write or just chat with friends. Seating is pretty limited so be aware that you may have to wait for a table to open up. Also, there's no wifi so don't come here with your laptop road warriors. Unplug and zen out.

The Tao of Tea is a beautiful, personal, and tasty restaurant/ seller of tea. They are separated into restaurant and tea shop and have different working hours, so please make sure to check restaurant hours vs tea shop hours. I ve gone several times to both and I always find something new and yummy to try. Has yummy Vegan/ Vegetarian options. It s a must go if visiting PDX.

Don't go if they're busy. Took forever to get menus after we sat down, then forever for our order after that when it was just tea and baklava. Uses cast iron teapots that are chipped inside. Tea wasn't as good as expected. Felt rushed and disorganised.

I try to stop by here every time I'm in the Portland area! The variety of tea is so pleasing from black to green to white to herbal. Their menu has a Mediterranean flair which is so lovely as it complements many of their tea selections and it's light on the belly, so you won't walk out feeling heavy. I always make it a point to stop by the tea store across the way and buy some loose leaf tea. I absolutely love this place and how comfortable and peaceful it is every time I visit. A must try for tea lovers.

On December 31st, when all the cafes in downtown Portland closed early and we were eager for a place to be soaked in the rain, this place was healing from the moment we stepped on.
Just by looking at it, I could see the healing car getting off,

It is a place where you can enjoy the harmony of East and West!

This is a standard for me. I love going here when I want to have a one on one talk with a friend or partner. This is a perfect place to pause, share in tea and conversation. One time we ordered the Oolong tea and learned the full Chinese ceremony! The eats they have are also soul fulfilling. Definitely a place for the mind, heart, and soul.

Tea is hands down the best around Portland. The tea shop looks awesome but service is questionable and takes a considerable amount of time to get what you went there for. Check the shop out next door though!

I love this place. Reasonable prices, great tea, and great food. We always got half Chana Chaval and half Dal. Their matcha shake is delicious as well as gyokuru japanese green tea. I recently moved to Chicago and am homesick for Tao of Tea!!!! Portland's best kept secret.

I can only rate the tea shop since I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the tea house yet. We were greeted by a friendly employee and when I had questions about a specific tea, he answered them all with a smile. I look forward to getting back there again.

Tao of Tea is a traditional style teahouse -- the ambience is very zen and rustic. Their tea selection includes all sorts of tea -- from black tea to white tea to green tea to rooibos and other non-caffeinated teas. They serve the tea in tiny, ceramic tea cups and it comes with an additional pot of fresh hot water. They also have a wide selection of vegan & vegetarian savory snacks. The cuisine is mostly Asian, Indian, and Middle Eastern. You can get something small, like the pakoras, or something heartier, like the dal with rice or the soba noodles. This is a great place to hang out with friends or significant other. It's not a place for a quick cup of tea to go. It's a haven where you can relax, sip on high quality teas, and enjoy your company. It's an experience that transcends mere food and drink.

This tea house is a true gem. The prices are right, and the space will transport you to a calm, gentle mind-set. Their tea is top-quality; it is the best in Portland in my opinion. This is a great place for dates, catching up with friends or family, or for self-care. Highly recommended!!!

For people who love tea or want to know the various types of tea offerings, this place offers a wide gamut of tea options. The tea is served in various types of tea pots and cups which adds to the experience. I wish the place was a bit bigger but then that could take away the relaxing ambiance of this place. Overall a great place to relax and enjoy tea!

Probably the worst service I have ever had. 2 stars because the food is good and and the tea is very good. Just do not go when they are busy, you will wait and they might forget about you. I asked the Asian lady waitress if I could use the bathroom, she looked upset and told me to go out in the hall. But she did not tell me I needed a key. Then she took our order by writing on her hand with a pen (weird). I ordered more food and waited for over 40 minutes before I just paid and left. They were seriously understaffed. Ill never go there again.

Decor is eclectic and a little dated (track lighting, ceiling from the 80s) but the tea and food are fantastic. You can tell from the long list, great descriptions and type appropriate tea-ware that they truly care about the quality of the tea experience. Baklava was some of the best I've had in the US and the sencha took me right back to my days in Japan. Great stop for an afternoon tea. Will go again.

This is a must do when visiting the Lan Su Chinese Garden. It is such a Zen experience to enjoy their fabulous teas and maybe a snack or two of homemade goodies.

There is an assortment of a good variety of teas to chose from and they pot them all specially depending on the tea you order. The presentation is just so elegant and majestic. The service is so peaceful and gentle when delivering the tea service once ordered. The staff frequently checks on you to see if you need more hot water added to you pot to continue you tea experience.

For a snack, we ordered the almond cookies and have never experience such wonderful almond cookies like that before. Perfectly crisp and fresh. Most almond cookies are drowning in the fake almond flavor from excessive almond extract, but these had the perfect light hint as to not overwhelm the flavors. Also got the roasted fava beans that added for a nice neutral flavor crunch to the experience.

One thing that really stood out to me on this experience was that the price was very affordable. You can do tea for 2 and a couple tea snacks for around $20. That to me was also exceptional and well worth the stop during the tour of the Chinese Garden.

If you do go, visit first thing in the morning when they open so you beat any crowds or noisy tourist who don't know how to keep quiet in such a wonderful place.

You will not find any better tea, period. Even your typical earl grey is brought to a whole new life with their blend. Best variety of greens, oolong, and pu er (puer velour is stunning). Ask questions, they will tell you all you need to know about type of tea you might be interested in.
