I picked Oneonta because of its isolation, hoping we would be shielded in sorts from hotspots in large urban areas. Don't get me wrong, many students held parties and there were no safety precautions. But there are thousands of colleges across America, do you really think that those kids aren't partying? Of course they are. The schools blatant negligence caused this outbreak. When I was in the dorms there were virtually no checks at all. In order to get into the dining hall you had to put your hands on the doors. While thats normally fine the hand sanitizing dispensers were almost always empty and never refilled. On top of that when they had us get tested they had 200+ kids crowd into one building to get tested. Coincidentally, not too many kids tested positive that day of testing. But tests taken after showed a larger number of corona cases because we infected one another when they crammed us into a building for mandatory testing. I was tested on Monday August 31st and did not receive my results until September 9th. Why didn't I get my results in 2-3 days like most people? Because they lost tests through the incompetent handling of a serious crisis. If you thought that was it...you are wrong. I was refused testing because I did not own a smart phone. I had to go into town to get tested. My roommate had been hanging out with some kids on our floor for extended periods of time, and told the health center this. They told him because he hasn't gotten his test results back yet that he can go home. As soon as he got home he got tested and is now positive. They are sending kids home so its not there problem anymore. Peoples lives will be lost due to this, accountability is key here. They may think that blaming negligent students will distract everyone from the only people who could have made this situation safe for everyone. Incompetence that endangers the lives of families of students should not be rewarded. Do not choose Oneonta for your children, it might be your life at stake.

Personally, I see a lot of people complaining but, they should be more objective. I was very displeased with the quality of the Chemistry and Physics departments (as these were my original focus areas). However, I absolutely fell in love with the Environmental Science and Geography department. It's a tight knit community and those that complain about this department are typically those whom didn't know what courses to choose or those that would be most helpful. They are very flexible, I was able to obtain a Dual B.S. degree, with a minor, plus technical skills courses, as well as, participate in great local internships that not only gave me professional experience but, class credit as well. My only complaint is the lack of graduate funding provided to SUNY Schools by NYS. They have great masters programs with lots of potential, especially a great location for their Biology and Lake Management programs. However, without much funding available it's hard to attract graduate students. Overall, if you stay smart and realize you're there to prepare for your future then you should do well. Attitude is a large contributor to one's success.

SUNY Oneonta is a very good college with quite rigorous academics (for the most part) with 5 nationally accredited and recognized majors that land excellent white collar jobs if graduating with good grades, all with just a 4 year degree. The professors are EXCELLENT, every single one I have had there in 5 years with the exception of ONE are quite exceptional teachers many whom are world renowned in their field as well as kind, accessible, and for the most part approachable and down to earth. If one plays ones cards right you can leave Oneonta with a bachelors degree from a college whose academics and student population get better with each passing year as well as fond memories of parties, friends, and the whole college life experience.

Great teachers and programs but it s too bad student offices don t do their job. Admissions office is the only helpful office on that campus. Financial aid drag their feet rather then do their job parking office is the same.

Transferred here from my community college back home...the community college was far better. This place is just highschool 2.0. DB frat boys everywhere, epic struggle every semester to get a full schedule, everything here is like pulling teeth to get something done. I dont know if they are oblivious to the fact that they do not offer nearly enough time slots for most of the courses offered, understaffed, or just dont care. The professors here are mostly very helpful and good teachers, however it seems every department head has little idea what they are doing. If you are some kind of business major who does not really care, and just wants to party the same way every weekend go for it. If you want a serious, relaxed, and efficient college experience go elsewhere. Laughable how much more organized and efficient my CC was compared to this place even though its double the cost.

If you're serious about academics and/or getting a good job, don't go here.
+ Some great professors, particularly in the Biology Department
+ I'm in the minority, but I like the location.
+ You can usually find a nice, quiet spot in the library to get work done
- Whiny, entitled, lazy, stupid classmates. The majority of students here just want to scrape a C+/B- without cutting into their party schedule
- In your average 100-level class, maybe 1-in-5 students will do the assigned reading
- Anytime students have to do work outside of class time, they whine about the workload
- Lots of rude/unhelpful staff
- Maybe 5-10 people in each graduating class get what would objectively be called a "good outcome." Nobody ever gets into medical school, maybe 5 students in the last 30 years have gone to top law or business schools. Granted, if you want to go on to get a MA in Gender Studies from the University of Southern Idaho, you could do worse.
The videos and flyers they post for the graduating class say it all. Sure, lots of people go to grad school, but most of them are going to unranked social science programs that give them virtually no chance at a good job. A couple are getting good jobs with good companies, but the majority are either unemployed, or making $25-30K in some dead end job.
I have classmates who've succeeded since leaving here, but this school had nothing to do with it.

Honestly this school was a disapointment for all the hype. I had a few wonderful professors and a few great classes, but over all the education I got was a disapointment compared to my community college. I only learned theory here, not real world skills. Toward the end of my time there they cut a whole bunch of classes for my degree and the classes they did provide had nothing to do with my Criminal Justice Degree. If it werent for the great internship I had, l probably would considered my time there a complete waste. Im very disappointed with how they use student and government funds, I dont see how it goes toward students at all. Ive only seen it go towards art on the property, poor revamping of old buildings, and terrible academic staff, instead of adding greatness to the academics provided or to the multicultural community (which it lacks even though they brag about the 12% multicultural community they hold...because its "such a remarkable amount"....not really folks). For as much as they brag about themselves I dont really see what is worth bragging about, I certainly dont brag about going here to others because my academic experience doesnt even come close to the powerful knowledge that my friends walked away with from UAlbany.

SUNY Oneonta is an excellent college! The academics are awesome and the professors here are very helpful, such as helping out their students with material after class. Also, the campus is beautiful. They're about halfway done with the construction on Fitzelle hall and it will be done next summer. My only complaint would be regarding Sodexo (the dinning service). They could use a little more variety in their food choices. For example, even with three dining halls they serve almost the same things. In addition, more fresh food and ingredients incorporated into the dining halls would be great, but overall the food is okay.
