BOWMAN James Hugh Death notice 12FEB1942 Death at Singapore, late of Birriwa Sydney Morning Herald 17APR1942

We need to know if this is the same James Hugh Bowman who married Rosina Jane Skinner 25 April 1906

Honestly believe he would have been to old to go into the army

So may have been a son

Lovely place. If you walk a little further down you d find the Shakespeare room and in there was a lady from the Shakespeare Society who was happy to chat about it and talk to me; very kind, friendly, and insightful. :-)

Excellent library, great atmosphere for studying, fair selection of different studying areas for group/ quiet solo study/ work etc.
Could stand to have some more power points in the 'old' section of the library, but a great study/ productive spot regardless.

Was excited to spend the day exploring the library and viewing the art but the gallery was closed for refurbishment.

The staff were arrogant, unfriendly and rude towards me as I had a bottle of water with me, and liquids weren t allows in most areas.

Amazing place to read, study or just surf internet. Although I find the temperature inside a bit lower than normal. So the next time I will be visiting I will definitely have something warmer than just a t-shirt. Exhibition galleries have few fabulous peaces of art. Mitchell Library looks like in movie with huge walls full of books.

Went to the library with a tough research subject, the staff was so helpful so I got hold of every document available within ten minutes, so thanks heaps again! The main room is beautiful and makes it a joy spending long hours there. I would go there again just to be in such a beautiful place.

This is a great library with some extensive resources. I was looking for some work on aboriginal culture and went to the review state library. there were plenty of good resources to assist me in my thesis. Also its conveniently located at Macquire Street.

Extremely rude and pratty staff with ridiculous security that treat you like a second class citizen. You can't even take your bag into the library without being harrassed by heavy handed security. You're expected to pay for a locker without any mention on the website or entrance to the library. Limited study space and a distinct lack of charging points for laptops. They could easily fit more people into the space if the tables were simply rearranged.

Beautiful !! stunning !!!

Beautiful !! stunning !!!
It is a very beautiful library. You can enjoy reading in a quiet and clean environment and use a computer. Next to it is a museum where you can see the history of Sydney
It was operated very well.
A building that is unbelievably strong and sturdy enough to have built this water 100 years ago.
Various events and artworks in addition to historical objects. You can enjoy classical arts and read a book from the library while you are looking at it.
I think it's better because it is a free viewing. If you want to feel the history and atmosphere of Australia, you
It is a landmark.

There are some beautiful places to study in Sydney and this is not one of them. The security guards are sooooooooooooo rude, overbearing, downright abusive and make you feel uncomfortable studying there. You would expect this kind completly over-the-top security at the Louvre not a library. You are not even allowed to take water in, even though this is a necessity for the brain and body to function while studying. You cannot take anything in and they make you pay for overpriced lockers. Even 1 star is overly generous!

A great place to both visit to look around but also to study or work if you need to. Helpful staff and great resources. Fast, free internet along with ample desks, although some additional charging points would make it even more useful.

What a delightful surprise. It's far more than just a library, but also a gallery, museum and loads and loads of history. Free guided tours are most informative. A nice cafe on the main floor , hidden away by the bookstore / gift shop, offers nice selection of warm meals, salads and snacks in a pleasant setting.
The gallery is better than some fine arts Museums in world famous cities, and it has interactive displays of most art that will surely impress everyone.

You can easily spend the entire day in this building. And it's all free!

I used to love going to the NSW State Library but in the last couple of years I will avoid the place if possible. Absolutely ridiculous that water in a sealed bottle (with a pop-top lid) is not allowed in the library, I understand juice and food due to the resources within the library but not being allowed water is a bit steep, especially because a number of people need to carry water on them for medical reasons. I was even asked if I had any medication on me before entering the library... why???? It is a library for pits sake, it is none of the business of the staff if I have to carry medication on me. I could have given this review one star but I am giving it two as the staff have been helpful in finding resources the last time I was here.

Frequent photo exhibitions upstairs - downstairs seems to be full of university students pretending to study while actually checking each other out and/or using the free Wi-Fi - probably not fast but how much you wanna complain about free?

Great service

Great service
Pity that books are not allowed for loan, you can only view inside the library
Very impressive inferior and exterior design

Have been here on and off for about one year. Never had unpleasant experience with the staff. The security could be strict but they are just doing their job. Now they have opened up the new wing's lower ground floor (so you don't have to put stuff away in locker) and it's great! Good quiet place to work and study.

Such a great area to study! However, it always closes earlier than it says it will. Also, I wish the study rooms had some sort of screen that shows when there's a booking; many times, I've booked a room and found someone else in there during my time, but felt too awkward to kick them out, which I guess is kind of my own problem. Just something I think would improve it a bit!

If you're traveling to Sydney City, we recommend that you stop by the NSW State Library near Botanical Gardens. Buildings and interiors with a different atmosphere from the Korean conduit are a great place to leave a certified shot.

One of my favourite places to spend a rainy weekend. In particular I love all the free exhibitions they put on. The World Press Photography exhibition but I also enjoyed the recent Life Interrupted exhibition of WW1 personal diaries of soldiers.
