An excellent place to read, study, occasionally visit and pay respects as well as pass time for a good read. Great for school or general study and a good place to become a member and also find some resources for extra learning. Definitely recommend for schools, tourist groups, and conferences.

The State Library is still a haven for social reflection, historical or contemporary photos, portraits or other. The cafe is still open and so is the book shop. Alas seating arrangements have diminished ... but that's everywhere in COVID times.

A nice building, very nice and with clean services and public telephone. The exhibition of old books and the creative area of floral design and composition are very beautiful.
A priceless collection.

I enjoy seeing Trim the cat on one of the western windowsills
We all should use the Library more.

If you're the kind of person that complains about libraries being full of loud teenagers supposedly studying, then this is for you (it totally is for me). The silence is wonderful there. My friend calls it a little oppressive, but I quite like it. For short periods of time anyway. I think you do have to pay $2 or something for locker hire, as you aren't allowed to bring in your bag. If you want to bring a textbook in or something, you even have to sign it in and back out again when you leave... at least they aren't the TSA, right? The free Wi-Fi is a little shoddy, but at least they had the brains to put a password on it (hint: putting a publicly available password on your Wi-Fi network is not the same as not putting a password on it...)

I've never had to make use of the Library itself, though it looks impressive.
I've been here a couple of times for its photography exhibits. They regularly host shows of photojournalism, and these are always both gripping and well-attended.
The space works for this, as they have exhibition rooms that are like a small museum. It can get packed depending on the crowds, though.
The fact that they gravitate towards press photography seems to match with the documentary nature of the Library, I think.

Best place to go for studying under the high ceiling. The highlight this library is historical place in Sydney but also open as public space. So I would like to get some inspiration in old place, I go there for studying and drawing. The other highlight is second level of gallery.

Not quite true to say that you can't take things into the library, as one reviewer says. You can take in writing pads and laptops and books, you just need to fill in a slip of paper for books being taken in and out. You can't take in backpacks etc, but they can be left in lockers (one dollar rental for four hours). You can't request books without having a card: you can get a card by applying online and waiting a week for it to arrive at your home address. The cafe is a bit expensive. The women's toilets are a bit messy at times.

The library is fantastic. I love the friends room & the resources are second to none but I have to say that I am spoilt by the Qld State Library that is free. The NSW library is $80/year for a membership plus you have to add on fees for booking rooms etc which isn't as great as Qld State library where that is all for free plus you get to use recording studios etc so that is the only reason for downgrading my rating.

Beautiful interior and impressive architecture. A city institution. Shame about the Security staff who believe they work for the TSA. I've been to Heathrow post terrorism events and have had better treatment (not to make light of situation). You can understand the aims of airport security and the aviation laws however the staff at the library today couldn't cohesively explain the protocols or reason for the bag checks. She even said 'it saves time,' and I told her one would argue it would cost more time for the average visitor. I even suggested prevention of theft as an inadequate reason to feel like a suspect. Especially since they don't check the contents of your oversized items before they're secured in the (albeit reasonably priced) lockers anyway. Do they have infrared scanners, or is that coming out of next year's budget? Ladies, anything smaller than a laptop bag is OK (upon searching the contents), however bucket bags or shopping bags are not.
Snarkiness over. There is a popular cafe upon entry, a gift shop with what seems to be quality items and clean restroom facilities.
I am a regular at my local library and think I'll continue to go there instead. Whilst their Reference section is non-existent and they have barely-functioning wifi, you CAN take food and drink in, there are NO bag restrictions and your visit doesn't come with the feeling like you were an errant child. I think it would have been more palatable if it didn't feel like they were reprimanding you. Seems like a common theme in the reviews. Still, it's worth a visit. Just leave your nail clippers, aerosol cans and liquids over 100ml at home.

If you are visiting Sydney and have a spare hour, you should definitely put The State Library of New South Wales on your list of places to see. It is beautiful both inside and out. The library section itself takes you back in time and is a true delight to take photos of. You are welcome to walk around and take photos inside as long as you are quiet. The entrance on Macquarie Street has a cafe where you can sit and have a coffee and snack. The foyer also has a large gift shop filled with beautiful Australian products.

There is a particular type of story often told about Kate Mulvany, who this year received both the Mona Brand Award for women writers of stage and screen and a Medal of the Order of Australia. The story is a flattering one, of course: a bit of the beloved underdog triumphing, plus a dash of the Australian Dream s glorious vision of upward mobility. Perhaps it s a variation of the rags-to-riches we re so accustomed to accepting in showbiz, and an enduring adoration of the country girl the romantic vision of the poet from the regions.

Beautiful library and building, featuring a cafe, a small gift shop, and a galley and museum. Definitely not of the cozy variety, much more sleek and clean, but a good place to take a rest and read a book.
The art collections are totally incredible. Worth a trip just for the museum-quality gallery! Loved the video exhibit featuring aboriginal elders.

Library itself is beautiful but the librarians/staff are extremely loud in the governor Marie bashir reading room. The public are constantly monitored by the security and getting a talking to for infringements such as touching the table legs with their feet! But no one ever tells the librarians to be quiet! It is a library after all. Not a bloody cafe. Also rude and unhelpful. Wifi is basically non-existent.
Library tours are also noisy and disruptive.

Great place to sit back and relax with a book or just to chill and surf the internet. Located within a short walk from the heart of the CBD, the State Library is what I feel to be an underutilized resource for what it is. Not only an extremely useful resource for research, even with the internet around, there is also a gallery to see. That and free wifi, what more could you ask for?
