I was in Saint Marten on holiday and had to go to the hospital.
This was after a very serious accident while swimming on the Simpson Bay beach.
I stepped on some part of a submerged steel wreck very close to the shore.
I sustained a 2" laceration on the bottom of my left foot, which severed an artery under my big toe, so I was bleeding quite a bit.
I was taken to the SMMC.
I was dropped off at emergency and I was helped by a security guard into a wheelchair and taken inside.
That was when I realized that I had virtually no identification, health cards, credit cars, or money.
I was asked to fill in a standard admission form, and told the I would be seen asap.
I had wrapped the wound and stopped the bleeding so I wasn't in immediate danger, normal triage procedure.
I didn't have to wait too long before I was called in.
The nurses and doctors where very good.
The conditions in the emergency room where very good.
The nurse cleaned off the surface and determined that the wound was filled with sand and needed to thoroughly cleaned out, not to mention the blood vessel that had to be repaired to stop the bleeding.
Bottom line all the staff were very well qualified they stitched me up despite knowing I had no id or proof I could pay.
Couple of days later I got a ride over to pay my bill which was US$850.
The foot is healing up and I hope to able to walk on it before I go home.
No more swimming unfortunately.

The doctors are good, but the nurses are mainly more occupied with next weekends event and not the patients. I was at the Intensive Carey Unit, but the staff was so noicy that I could sleep. In addition they did not care to read the doctors report, so they had no clue why I was there in the first place. SMMC was also extremely expensive. I should have been moved to another unit, but they did not, and I then had to pay the most expensive rate.

Took 7mo old child to ER for dehydration, she had a stomach virus, the hospital has a rule that only one parent is allowed. This about made my head explode with complete fury. I understand with an adult, but for an infant this is ridiculous. If I have to visit another ER it won t be this one.
