I like it and little different than other state houses
So much history and I learned a few things about the state...
Can't wait to come back with the family when we have more time
Very pretty building. The grounds were great as well.
You can still see the canon ball holes and still flies the Rebal flag
Watch your State in action. Tours available, seating in the balcony if you want to watch your representative support your issue.
Absolutely amazing, visiting this historic location allows an individual to discover an immense amount of our nations history.
A very scenic and educational way to spend an hour or two in Columbia, SC
Kids learned about the history of the State House. Lots of fun facts given by the tour guides.
Rather a boring place to read-about online; definitely not on my top 5,000-places to visit.
A member of your assembly decided to give her opinion on a situation before she had the facts. Now it is obvious she was wrong and said some nasty things. She should be called to the front of the room and made to apologize to our service academy men and women to whom she offended. In the future one would hope she would use better judgement, as an elected official.
I enjoy early morning coffee and breakfast there ( they open at 6:30!) but the happy hour menu is also delicious. You can lounge on a sofa and have great snacks such as Korean sliders, truffle fries, etc.they offer free night or pay what you can (donation) for admission. I went at this time and think this is a wonderful thing to do. Hopefully more people will be able to have access and learn about art history. Otherwise, it is $25 for an adult.
This is a great place to visit and they offer guided tours. The grounds of the State capital were the highlight of the visit with several different monuments.
definitely take the one hour tour, our guide lady is knowledgable and welcoming.
Great views of a historic building. Well lit paths all around. Plenty of benches. Lots of statues and monuments. Has a few PokeStops if that's what you're looking for.
Great for chilling with your boys, playing ingress or working out with the FIAs. Lots of neat historical markers and plaques. Make sure to check out George Washington and his broken cane. Also don't forget to count all of the Cannonball strikes that are marked by stars on the west side.
Cool place to visit and lots of history to explore. You can walk through the state house yourself or take a guided tour if you like. There are also lots of monuments and art to explore around the statehouse grounds. It's a great place to take older children to give them some historical perspective about our state.
Nice place to visit. Guided tours are also available.
A beautiful peace of history well worth the visit, free to go inside just need to pass through security to go inside take as many photos as you like, and there s even a guided tour if you want to take advantage of that.
There is parking around but it s paid parking.
Take the free tour, just do it. I lived in Columbia for 4 years before I did it and honestly it was great, shouldn't have waited so long. Seeing the halls of the state house give a feeling of connection to the heart of the capital city. The whole building is just special.
I just went there for a field trip a year ago and it was AWESOME. P.S. I give it five stars
Beautiful grounds, tours run frequently even on the weekends! Intern was attentive and gave good history to the building.
Very unique history, took 52 years to finish the building. It even has canon ball marks. Also is the only state that has both stare sward and stare mace. The building used martireals from lots of places, like marbles from Tennessee and Georgia, steel from Pittsburgh and stain glasses from Baltimore.
Thank you for getting rid of that annoying red flag. It really detracted attention from the building itself, since it was so vibrant.
I nearly always disagree with what goes on IN the building but the grounds are a welcome respite. Well kept and always beautiful, the staff take such great care of the monuments and the walking parks around them. It's a great place to sit in the shade and just enjoy a break from the city for a moment.
Taking down the flag was a disgrace to our country. A state that gives it's states rights up to the federal government and removes a piece of history to be politically correct is a state I will NEVER live in or visit.
Very beautiful on the inside. tours are interesitng.
Amazing architecture, spotless building, great place to visit, you ll take around 25 min in the whole tour
They offer free tours inside the statehouse. Its beautiful inside and historic beyond belief. The grounds are well maintained and have all kinds of different trees and statues. Its like a small park in the middle of the city of Columbia. Its a stone's throw from the REAL USC's campus and the historic Horseshoe. The whole area is beautiful with the massive trees and monuments.
Great location for portraits!! We recently photographed a wedding in Columbia, SC and used the State House for most of the couple's photos.
If you apply in advance, there is a free guide system that allows you to listen to the guide explanations.
Beautiful grounds. Didn't get to go inside due to hurricane Florence. A few bums and looks like it could be dangerous after dark but gorgeous during the day.
Fun place and free tours. The ability to walk inside and look at the chambers is really cool. It's defiently something to do if one is really trying to hit all Columbia has to offer.
We didn't get to go inside but the outside is clean and beautiful!
Had a great time walking around here. The tour was free and more interesting than I would have guessed. Particularly enjoyed the artwork and the symbols of authority in the house and senate.
Outside of the state house is a great place for early morning or evening workouts! This is also a great location to take some photos as a landmark of visiting Columbia or even a professional photo shoot. I think it should be a must visit just because Columbia is the capital of South Carolina and the State House of any state is one of the most iconic buildings.
Very well maintained by South Carolina's inmates, beautiful grounds
Very educational to see how our laws are made (or not)
Well the state House is beautiful and the history is wonderful but it was tainted by the guides political views. He not only criticized an elected official but could not hide what he stands for . We have been in South Carolina for 2 weeks and want to make it our new home . But when we have visitors we will not bring them on your guided tour . I m very thankful will live in a country with freedom of speech . But sometimes it s nice to view history and not hear about today s politics. That s not why we came to tour . Don t need it!!
I really enjoyed the Lauryn Hill concert hosted here!
I'm a student at USC and I walk here in my free time. It is always so beautiful and peaceful. It really shows the beauty of South Carolina. In your free time take a tour. The inside reflects the beauty of the outside.
A nice capitol with nice grounds. Some interesting statues to see on the grounds.
The seat of representative government in South Carolina. An architectural masterpiece filled with artwork commemorating the state's central role in the formation and evolution of the USA.
Peaceful, well-maintained grounds complement the structure.
Inside, on weekdays, you can sit in the balcony of the Senate and watch the government proceedings - an interesting experience - and there are frequent political demonstrations in front of the building.
I've been to many government buildings in many different countries; the SC State House is one of a kind due to its sacred atmosphere, openness to the citizenry, and professional administration and security.
While I ll leave the politics inside the building, the grounds are well kept and dotted with historical points of interest. This is a great place for a stroll following a lunch at one of Colombia s many good, local restaurants.
The South Carolina State House is one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in America. Not only is the architecture of the building beautiful but also the grounds are a botanical garden with hundreds of different species of trees, bushes, and flowers. It is easy to spend hours walking along the many paths admiring the grounds. There are also many monuments, statues, and historical markers to enjoy. I have been to the capitol many times and it is enjoyable all year long. Don't forget to go inside the building itself. Take a guided tour or get a brochure and see it on your own.
Great place to visit with your family or friends. I highly suggest a tour, which I believe they have every hour. Our guide was a nice gentlemen, taking us back in the history of South Carolina. We had a great time at the Capitol!
This was definitely one of the coolest experiences I've ever had. I love historical places and this was so amazing! This is a must do and a must see!
Tours are available but you can also walk through the building unescorted. Beautiful wood decor, and interesting historical information/pictures are displayed throughout. There's a small African-American display on the grounds. Good place to visit if you're in downtown.
The State House grounds are a beautiful place of historic significance. Tours are available Monday - Friday for free. You can walk in any time even if there is no tour and walk around yourself. Definitely run up the stairs like Rocky!
Very impressive, amazing history. I recommend going on a weekday so you can see real life politicians in their natural habitat. The tour is an hour or you can pick up a brochure and wander around.
Beautiful grounds. Love to walk around the property
Finely manicured grounds and beautiful historical building. Visited during flag protest, so there was a lot of excitement and revelation in the area.
Loved the guided tour. They let you take photos of everything whenever you want
The State House is great for quality time with the family. Between historical tours and all the Pokestops to the beautiful landscaping and places to eat nearby, you can't go wrong.
Beautiful grounds and lots of history. Also a great place to grab a bench and have a bite
South Carolina has one of the most beautiful state capitol grounds. Stroll around in the spring to see blooming flowers and to relax in the shade. On most days you can also tour inside the building.
It only takes an hour to do a self-guided tour. It was interesting to see where things happen in SC's capital.
Very good, but wont allow you to go into the basement!
Love walking. Love feeding birds and squirrels with the kids!
Many great laws came to pass here, but also some not so great ones. Fairly satisfied for the most part, except for the ones im not all that satisfied with. Check it out if you can, but it you can't, its cool.
Build in 1855, here settled the first Confederate government of a state because South Carolina was the first state who seceded from the Union in 1860.
Great place to visit both as a local and a visitor. Went through a tour of the State House with some out if town relatives and not only is it beautiful on the inside and enriched with a great history, the guide that we had did a great job and you could tell they were passionate about their job.
Gift shop was small and affordable and nice staff working there as well.
Free tours! Explore the inside and outside. Try the scavenger hunt...it will keep kids busy and you will learn a lot. Have been multiple times and always learn something new.
Had alot of fun walking around and learning about sc history
