Great hotel! Decent room size and close proximity to Union Square & 20min walk to Farmers Market. Bathrooms are slightly on the smaller side compared to other US hotels I've stayed at. Would recommend it!!

Was pleasantly surprised by this place. Rooms were very nice and the amenities were awesome. I actually thought the gym was really well out together and has two Peloton bikes if you re into that. Multiple treadmills, free weight set, water station, towels, and mats.

Had a cool view from my room too!

Our room was on the 15th floor and quiet even though it was close to the elevator.
The area was not overwhelming as some of the other hotels in this price range can be - quiet and unaffected by the typical downtown San Fran issues. We would stay here again. No room service but that's typical in this price range and plenty of things nearby so not really an issue.

Great location near some late night high lights of San Francisco, but not too deep into the tenderloin area. Our room was bigger than we expected and everything was clean and fresh. The hotel lobby was well decorated and stay was friendly. Our only complaint is that the hotel does not have any cots available. Otherwise it is a great value!

Stay was good, rooms were clean, friendly staff. We booked it on Expedia. But when we tried to check in they charged extra $34 for something called as resort fee which we were not aware of at the time of booking. Edit: Resort fee was listed on the Expedia, so changing the rate to 3, It would be great if that information is easily available, than customers need to dig for it.

Spent the night while in San Francisco. Parking available across the street but was incredibly expensive. Free WiFi and acceptable accommodations. Morning coffee was gone and not refilled by the time I got downstairs.

Under going remodeling right now which would have been nice to know. Right on the edge of the Tenderloin so a wrong turn and you are stepping over transients in the streets. Every night we had a couple coming in around 330am making all kinds of noise for at least an hour. Room was clean but Wi-Fi was intermittent. Best part was Jaspers Bar right next door and the discount we got as hotel guests.

Not worth the money. You will get a much better option for the same rate. They call this hotel 4star and charge hefty but most of the items in the room is very old and do not work. Looks like they keep a theme and hence not improving any of their equipments!!
Think twice before you book.

Very trendy hotel that's a little too proud of itself. My only real complaints here were that the bathroom was very tiny, one knee touches the vanity while the other touched the shower door while sitting on the toilet, and while the linens were high end the mattress itself was what you would expect at a Quality Inn. No coffee maker in the room but free (good) coffee at the hotel restaurant when they are open.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Hotel Spero. Clean and cozy rooms, great bathrooms, friendly staff, perfect location, affordably priced, and environmentally friendly. We will definitely be staying here for future San Francisco trips.

Decent rates for a clean, small, quality room with excellent contemporary features. Conveniently located near Chinatown, Union Square and various conference hotels. Also features an excellent bar and restaurant.

Hotel is located very very close to the tenderloin where all you see is homeless people in the sidewalks. We couldn't even walk to get food without being begged by them. Didn't feel safe at all with my daughter. Hotel room was very very small and old. We asked to be changed to a bigger room a month in advance and they didn't make those accommodations for us. Parking was $70 a day.

The rooms were great until we left for two hours to go to fisherman's warf. Came back to the apartment with mixe d nuts and a bottle of water on our bed that room service brings. Well while I was packing the next morning my laptop and ipad were stolen out of my room. Confronted the front desk and had me fill out this sheet for the missing items and said they would take care of me. A month later after calling them repeatedly they finally got ahold of me and said not a single person had entered my room not even room service to drop off the nuts and water bottle. They then refused to send any documentation to my insurance agent so I can finally get the money to replace those two very expensive items. It has now been over 3 months and I'm still trying to get them to send them that sheet I filled out. Great rooms horrible service and will not help out in any way possible!

Dishonest. There is a $20/night resort fee per night hidden in the surcharges. Basically this means you pay $20 per night for Wifi as there is no real additional benefit to this 'urban fee' and it is not optional so you cannot choose not to pay it. This is already an overpriced hotel so adding an extra charge that they hit you with on check in is pretty rich.

Just renewed the hotel and still it feels old and neglected. Worst service I've ever witnessed from stuff, even not basic manners or welcoming faces.

The area is full of homeless people and drug users (it's a city problem and not of the hotel - but if you find it uncomfortable u should book different area of the city and Taylor St.. Is really one of the most problematic).
Sure not a value for money option.

Sketchy area, charged for WiFi and amenities whether one wants it or not which they didn't even tell us about until checking out... I'd recommend going to Pickwick hotel instead with better rooms, free WiFi and a better location, all for the same price.

Old hotel but nicely kept. The room was small but clean. The location just on the edge of a questionable neighborhood, but not bad. The bar downstairs was fine - good selection of beers and drinks. The Owl Bar just up the street was great.

I just cancelled a reservation for Sunday 12/21 because, the day after I made my booking, I discovered there would be a $22 resort fee (payable upon check-in) on top of the rate/tax/charges I had reserved at. That left a bad taste in my mouth.

Very cozy hotel, at affordable prices ! Came here for a business trip and was given prime accomodations in terms of a room, gym, and restaurant that provided breakfast every morning. Would definitely try and visit again.

The Good: - The staff at the hotel and restaurant are all really helpful, polite, and friendly. - The decor inside of the hotel is pretty amazing. I love all the color and patterns! - Room was clean as expected. - Jasper's was a fun spot to lounge in and have a drink and some small plate food items at night after a day of walking through the city. The Dependable Stuff: - The hotel is located close to a lot of retail shopping stores and the banking district, so if you are into that kind of thing, it's a great & convenient location, if not, you might have to travel to find stuff to do. - It seems like the hotel is right on the edge of a bad part of town. If you walk north you are treated with shopping, but if you go south it seems like you are walking through an outdoor toilet (literally). The Bad: - Jasper's breakfast menu left a LOT to be desired. There aren't many options and the food was pretty bland and overpriced. In a city like San Francisco, you would do better to leave the hotel and find something else. - The towels are extremely over starched and not soft. - The bathroom sink was half hidden behind a support beam, so you could barely use it. (I'm guessing this doesn't apply to all rooms). - The view from our window was a liquor store, Super 8 hotel, and lots of non-descript square dull green and grey buildings. None of the interesting San Francisco architecture that you might hope to see (again, this doesn't apply to all rooms).

The room I stayed is small and easily to find some cracks on the wall. The toilet awkward small. Only one staff was there to help customers to check in or out even around noon.

And Be careful, they will charge you extra $25 + 3.5 tax. they call that "Urban Fee". i don't think it was worth it at all. if you would ask me that would I like to go back again, the answer is a big no. Not a very happy experience.

Great location, 2 blocks away from the venue we were going to attend. The rooms were a little small but the price was the right cost for the size. Rooms were clean, mini bar fully stocked, and the beds blankets and pillows were comfortable unlike other establishments. Overall a decent place to stay.

Stayed here for one night on vacation. Room was surprisingly big for SF, which we enjoyed. You can tell it's an older building but they tried to freshen up the decor so it doesn't feel so dated. Appreciated things like excess if outlets for charging and large lounging areas in lobby. Free fruit infused water all day and strong, fresh coffee in the morning by the front desk. Staff was friendly and helpful. Good location just outside of Union Sqaure area.

Great hotel, nice staff. I used to book at the Palomar, but since it raised it's prices a heck of a lot I went for this hotel. I was nicely surprised.

The only problem with this hotel is its location. As long as you stay on o'farrel towards union square its no problem. But don't walk down Taylor street towards market at night. Things get pretty creepy pretty fast.

There are also some wifi issues when there are a lot of techie guests ;)

Stayed here for the first leg of our honeymoon and really enjoyed it. Free wine hour was fantastic and rooms were clean and comfortable. Tiger skin robes were fun and different! Friendly staff and great location

Nice hotel, nice staff. My room was pretty small and lacked a closet so I couldn't hang my dress slacks or shirts and suit. Also my room was as close to the elevator as a room could possibly get, so it was very noisy whether it was conversations or the rattling of the elevator constantly going. My view was of the dilapidated building next door. Had a breakfast and a dinner at Jasper's. The food was good but pretty expensive. Spent over $20 for eggs Benedict and coffee. The location was pretty good. About a 15 min walk to most places I wanted to go.

The staff are super nice, and the architecture in the lobby is lovely; the attached restaurant is also rather tasty. I also appreciated the more eco-friendly vibe. My complaints are that there was no mini fridge I'm the room, and the bathrooms we're extra tiny. My biggest issue isn't something that can't be helped - and that is their location. You will get yelled at when you walk outside. You will be asked for drugs. You will have people attempt to relieve you of your wallet.

Spero is the recently renovated and renamed hotel ...

Spero is the recently renovated and renamed hotel Serrano, and the owners/managers did some great work in here. I was in a small room suitable enough for a solo business traveler. It was quiet; it was comfortable. The sheets were good quality, and the supplied amenities were a little above basic. Disappointing that there's no coffee maker in the rooms - especially for jetlagged long distance travelers, having to go down to the lobby for much-needed caffeine is a bummer. The elevator is ancient and tiny but seems swift enough. The lobby is bright and comfortable and a nice place to spend some time.

The only downside to the Spero - and it is significant - is one that they unfortunately cannot fix. While very close to Union Square, it is in the Tenderloin, which is one of the more unsafe neighborhoods in San Francisco. Panhandlers are everywhere - no worse here than in Union Square itself - but the area feels seedy and the smell of urine is pervasive in the street. I am comfortable enough navigating my sway swiftly in the region in the daytime but as a woman traveling alone not being out on it after dark.

The hotel was pretty nice, but the room they put me in was the smallest room I've ever stayed in. It was a 10ft x 10ft room with a queen-size bed, a small desk and a giant dresser, so there was barely any room to move around in there. The toilet was stuffed into the corner so sitting on it is nearly impossible.

My room didn't have a safe, a refrigerator, a coffee maker or an iron - all of which have been in nearly every hotel I've stayed at. The hotel doesn't have a pool and you can only get ice on floors 3, 6 and 9.

This is what you get for $300/night.

The Serrano is located on Taylor by Powell station and the Cable cars. The service there was very good especially when they offered to move us from our room when we did not get the room we wanted because we checked in later.

The room was clean although a bit small and while it is in an older building it is kept in very good shape. I would definitely stay here again.

First room I received was dirty, had it replaced and the 'new' room did not have hot water (in December).

We had the luxury suite and it was amazing, especially with 2 people sharing so one person had the bedroom with a door and the other had the sofa bed in the living room which also had a door. Definitely a great setup. Unfortunately, the extra we paid for a sofa bed is not worth it.

You could feel ever bar and spring coil on that sofa bed. The mattress was so old that you sank into it. I had to find a "between" spot (between the metal bars) to fall asleep in and I did my best not to move again until the morning.

Even worse, I let the front desk know about the sofa bed when I checked out and all they said was "Sorry. Thank you for your stay". Instant dismissal.

*A tip for those staying at the hotel: they couldn't come up with any decent recommendations for restaurants that weren't touristy and had a great atmosphere. We went around the corner to the Hilton for breakfast and the concierge for recommendations.

I enjoyed the hotel - the front desk staff were great. Rooms were large. Two TV's so got to catch up on some sports! The bathroom itself was gigantic! I would give 5-stars except I ran into a rather rude waiter/steward in the restaurant. Regardless, would totally recommend the hotel!

Room was okay, was not as nice as expected from the pictures. Parking situation no different then anywhere else in San Fransisco. Flew in from Chicago and had to stay an extra night, this was the most affordable / yet still pleasing. Would stay again, maybe just get a little better room. Lobby looks awesome, fresh coffee on the way out.

The hotel is gorgeous. Recently remodeled and perfectly clean.Comfortable bed. Staff is nice. The room is a little smaller than what I'm used to, but it's a perfectly comfortable size. I'd give it give 5 stars but I can hear everything going on in the room next to me.
