Good location with comfortable stay and wonderful staff
Really enjoyed our stay here . Nice and handy for the train station. Maybe the one complaint was that being at the back of the hotel we could hear the business opposite is putting out their garbage which seemed to be a lot of bottles. This was after 10.30 PM.
Very good lunch and service from Keith was great. Good price.
An appalling hotel which we will never visit again. Receptionist found everything hilarious but was wholly inefficient and brusque. They put us in a twin room for 3 people! Luckily we were so angry at that bedroom arrangements and the receptionist that they refunded us in full. Uncomfortable nights sleep and the rotted bath panel seeped water after a shower. It was appalling. The saving grace was the food & beverage manager and her trainee who were in charge of the breakfast service. They were SUPERB. This hotel is a travesty . Please think again before booking.
The most horrible thing was as I walked in through the front door an angry MEMBER OF STAFF (male) barged out past me nearly knocking me over! The dark haired girl on reception actually LAUGHED as we waliked to the desk to check in. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES .
Had lunch today was very good and nice friendly staff
Central directly at the train station ..... Very good facilities. .... very good breakfast. ....friendly service. .... Our room to the backyard was ok ... But the window could hardly be opened ... In the heat of an oven .... FensterBank outside full of pigeon dung ... No Wi-Fi on the 3rd floor
But is compensated by very comfortable lounges downstairs in the lounge
Pleasant oldie worldy atmosphere, staff welcoming, service good, plenty of choice on menu, loved the bagpipes which played us into dinner .
English retro decoration. Everyone tastes ..... Lots of carpet ... Like everywhere, no mixer on the sink! Collection flush !!! We had a good meal there.
Stayed there before, would stay there again. Friendly staff, rooms comfortable excellent location. Though if you go for cycling you may want to make sure they have storage for your bike.
Magnificent, kind and friendly staff, it feels like being in a real Scottish castle!
With a decadent touch it is perfectly located. Very nice room although a few aged
Enjoyed our stay at the Royal highland. Lovely room with a lovely large bathroom. Comfortable beds and very clean throughout. Large selection of food at the buffet breakfast. Location of hotel very central.
Took my son for breakfast, food was lovely and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Lovely place and we will be back again.
Lovely old hotel. Slightly dated but the service and food are wonderful.
Very good, stylish - the splendour of bygone days is all the to be seen, perfect location. It didn't have, tjough, the cosy atmosphere of a family run hotel, the interaction with the staff, who seemed a bit overworked, didn't have the element of natural, easy friendliness that you usually encounter in the North, which surprised me a little. But perhaps it's because they are a train station hotel, with a big turnover of guests. That said howevet the standards of the services are up to the stylish historic interior.
Stayed here during the last two Great Britain tours. Hotel is nice and the staff were friendly. However, the room (same one both times) was in need of revitalisation and love.
I couldn't stay as the room was awful. It was maybe a nice hotel 60yrs ago. The room reminded me of bad student accommodation. The hotel is very out dated,in need of renovation and a make over.
Excellent ideal place to stay if you are in town for the night
Terrible service. I got towel with blood on it and a leaking toilet. Don't recommend it!
Nice hotel and nice rooms. Stay here for its convenience.
Very comfortable rooms. ..Great breakfast ..friendly staff...
We had a lovely big room and the hotel is in a great location next to the train station. Food in the restaurant was just ok.
Not nearly enough parking and the finishings are a bit worn. Room also has a very poor view of an alley.
Pleasant hotel but dated, the rooms need a face-lift.
But the breakfast is better than any you will find at other hotels
Nice old hotel, however, the service at the bar and food lowers the rating.
I really enjoyed hang out at the RHH, the staff is helpful.
I bought an itison break but found the room on third floor cramped and when u ran shower fire alarm went off we asked for another room but had to wait till next day and was equally disappointed room was shaby shower room had sky light which was cracked and not as pictures show while we waited at reception another guest said her whole party was moved from third floor all itison guestsso we wont be returning disappointed.
Hotel is very good looking and clean. Big let down is the restaurant with the tasteless food and the prices, specially alcohols.
Avoid the restaurant, enjoy the Hotel.
By one step from train station. Clean and comfortable room. Excellent location.
This is an old style hotel. Just next to the train station like you dont even have to walk for half a minute. The only issue is that their bathroom wash basin has two taps one hot and one cold, you have to mix those two in basin then use mix water. I dont find that hygenic.
Arrived early but we put our bags in a locked room check in was good went to the room & it was nice the only problem was we couldnt open the window ,had a good nights sleep . Breakfast was great with a good variety & nice & hot the staff were very friendly would stay here again .
I LOVED THE EXPERIENCE
It keeps the atmosphere of 1920s Glamorous.
Amazing Staircase Titanic.
Dinning hall keeping the old decoration fantastic energy.
Good staff and profesional.
Good restaurant.
The only way to truly describe this place accurately is like a real life version of faulty towers.
Breakfast was a really odd experience. The food was of the poorest quality but the staff almost made it almost humorous. There were so many staff constantly rushing in and out of these two doors doing nothing and then returning. There is a juice machine (didn t know what was a thing) which the staff where constantly queuing behind quests to get themselves a glass. I saw one worker alone have three glasses of juice in the thirty minutes I was there. I actually had staff reaching over and across me to grab plates of food I had finished with while waiting for my other half to stop eating. The scrambled eggs were white and didn t look anything like an egg, the bananas were green and the croissants tasted like pastry that had been left in the freezer five years too long before being cooked.
Then we have the rooms.. while clean, the room was so incredibly small we had an issue housing two medium sized suitcases. The bathroom needed to be squeezed into, and was able to fit one person maximum at all times. I requested that we might be able to change rooms as we were literally walking on our belongings.
Other thing to note are that there is no AC or fridge provided in the room. While parking is said to be included on the website, there are only around five spaces at the front for free otherwise you are forced to walk to the nearest shopping centre and pay five pounds per night on top of the inflated price you have already paid to reside in a shoe box while lugging your bags all the way to the hotel.
The hotel itself has not been done up for quite some time, and while again clean, all the walls are damaged, tiles chipped and is just in a true run down condition. The photos on the website looked charming and that s why I booked, but let me inform you that s not what this hotel or the rooms look like which is a true shame.
Location is good. If you enjoy Faulty Towers, you will love this hotel.
Once again, a lovely couple of nights in the Hotel. Room was large warm and comfortable and dinner and breakfast excellent
Very tired hotel in need of refurbishment, staff where very abrupt and unhelpful over the length of our stay. I had to ask for a refund as were were charged for breakfast that was in with our booking, this was given with reluctance, asked for room to be serviced but wasnt, only 2 teabags for 2 people for a two night stay
Entry to building was promising but everything else is A little outdated. Room is comfy enough, a little stuffy at night however they do give a fan for use haha. Dinner was lovely and highly recommend the steak pie and the Balmoral chicken for mains . Service was a little slow but given covid and little staff it's was still a good effort! Breakfast wasn't too bad.. not great. Offering only toast , cereals and some pastries all of which given covid should maybe have been protected or packaged to avoid unnecessary touching. Service was good and even had soya milk available (great for us tolerance sufferers). Can't fault it really, was a good deal for two nights bed breakfast and dinner one night. Only downside was our toilet when flushed was ridiculously loud and took 10 mins to calm down.
Wonderful historic hotel in the most convenient location in Inverness. Next door to the train and bus stations. Everything you could need is on the doorstep. The hotel is a little tired in places but then again anything that is old with loads of character usually is. Breakfast is self service but plenty of staff are there to help or clear tables. Gail and her team are efficient and friendly and make a great start to the day. On the other hand, the Ash restaurant that is within the hotel needs to sort itself out. There is a great difference between efficient staff and feeling rushed. Okay, some people want to be in and out while others want to linger. This is a great shame as the food is very good and there is a great menu choice. Also.....please put a notice on the bar asking people to go to the other side rather than having people hanging about until a member of staff decides to appear and tells you to 'go to the other side'.
Great stay, floor boards are creaky and the view facing the train platforms is horrid
Staff was very friendly. Helped us out modifying the booking upon arrival, even though they were almost fully booked. Highly appreciated. Hotel is in very good location.
A note to North American tourists (such as myself): it is an older hotel, in need of some renovations and upgrades. Some may describe it as Old Continent Charm, some may be a bit put off, expecting a newer building with fresh facilities. We were kind of in-between, hence i mention it. I would stay in it again, as service was excellent.
Wonderful stay. Calm and quiet in the heart of the city. Cosy and staff are brilliant. Thank you
Excellent stay 2 nights B&B staff very helpful & attentive towards us looking forward to coming back in the near future
I really enjoyed my stay there. Great old world charm! It's centrally located in the heart of Inverness. Great high tea!
Nice grand old hotel right next to the train station, shopping centre and central Inverness. Very friendly reception and concierge staff, who were very willing to help. The location is great for anything in the city centre but that does mean there can be a bit of traffic, foot and car, nearby. That said despite staying on a busy Saturday night and being on the first floor right on the street corner the family and I had a good sleep in our spacious rather grand room. The bathroom wall seemed perhaps quite thin, in there one could here our neighbours conversations, but that could have been more them than the walls! Restaurant and bar seemed popular and staff were friendly. Good Highland buffet breakfast with ample supplies. Relatives stayed in the 'cosy' loft rooms which were as the name suggests much smaller and less grand than ours but very comfortable and of course quiet. Hotel is dog friendly meaning the whole family were able to enjoy our stay!
We were 4 people from the family spending the night. Check-in was seamless. The rooms had a just sufficient size for two people. The bed was a bit rough, but that is of course a question of taste. The placement of the hotel was the primary reason for choosing it, since it is conveniently central. The decor of the hotel is really stylish. The service was really professional for the most part, except for our dinner at the restaurant. The personnel was a little too "casual". Making inside (audible) jokes at the cost of the guests at the restaurant (funny hats/cloths). This was unfortunate, since it broke with a very nice feeling altogether.
I see that this review has been rated as four star - that was not my over all impression and I would only recommend this hotel as being in a useful location.
Impressive public spaces with lovely mid nineteenth century architecture, the rooms are a little shabby but cosy and characterful.
A very dated but elegant establishment staff extremely friendly, rooms grand but cosy
We were delighted with our room. Large, spacious and with a very comfortable bed!
Breakfast buffet was very good but it was the exceptionally friendly and helpful staff which made our two days away so enjoyable!
Excellent value for money!
Reception area has been modernised and is a pleasure to sit in. Unfortunately it stops there. Beyond recpetion is very dated and in need of modernisation. The room was small but clean and comfortable.
Dinner was ok. My wife had steak pie which was delicious but enough to feed four. My burger was ok but not great.
Breakfast the first morning was cold as all the lids were missing on the buffet table. Second morning normal service was resumed and all was well. Hotel is very central and we will return as is excellent value for money. Any complaints we had were not enough to spoil our visit.
Standard of accommodation was reasonable. I only stayed one night and arrived late. I couldn't get anything to eat because I hadn't made a reservation. However, there are many nearby restaurants within walking distance.
Outwardly interesting. Inside tiny rooms Creaking wooden floor shower not usable. No mixer to wash your hands
Great hotel very clean, lovely rooms and bathroom big. Staff appear nice and the food was lively. You get tea, coffee in rooms...a fan great heating and a kettle and ironing board and iron....and right next door to train station .....
Old hotel very nice and very well located to know Inverness, next to the station.
Very nice rooms. Bus directly in front of the hotel. Room very clean. WLAN hau after some attempts also works. Rooms are unfortunately no longer on the state of the art. Restaurant is also worth a visit. There you should reserve a table at the reception in advance.
A bit run down, not a great stay. Staff were quite pretentious.
Do NOT recommend! Wifi doesn't work in all rooms, barely got a message or email thru, couldn't use web pages at all. Couldn't use hair dryer as bathroom door has warning that steam from shower alone sets off their 'sensitive' alarm system. Restaurant is expensive. None of this made our trip enjoyable. Try somewhere else.
Excellent place to stay central to all transport train station, bus station, taxi rank, pubs are right at your door. And right next to the shopping centre
Lovely place to have a well made cocktail while waiting for a bus
Convenient location next to the railway station and great for exploring the town. Rooms reasonable size and adequate but a little tatty. The majority of the staff are friendly but a couple where not. The hotel reminded me of faulty towers at times.
Stopped at the hotel for afternoon tea. Excellent service. Attentive staff. The tea was fresh and scrumptious. Worth to visit.
Great location with the train station next door. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Restaurant is nice with a good choice. Afternoon tea is lovely! Great selection at breakfast and is kept very fresh. On our most recent stay we upgraded our room and it was definitely worth it including a Jacuzzi bath and a four poster bed as shown in photos. Highly recommend and will be back
Nice and central hotel with lovely friendly staff- enjoyed our stay
Staff on check-in a bit rude, answering phonecalls whilst talking to us. Room clean, some of the lights not working, bed comfy but squeeky, you can hear water in pipes every time someone flushes toilet or is having a shower in rooms around.. cons - it's cheap and right in the centre.
Unfortunately, the hotel is getting very old. The rooms and the bathroom are clean and there is free tea and coffee in the room. However, you could look out of the closed window in our room and the walls and furniture are slowly falling apart. We asked for another room at the front desk. That was not a problem and so we could stay the night in the hotel. The second room was also getting old and the window was very drafty, but it was better than the first. Only the great location is positive, since everything is within walking distance and the cleanliness.
Great hotel - classic old style place. A little dated but adds to the style. Friendly staff. Expensive over-priced bar only negative.
A time warp experience
The hotel is very conveniently located by the train station and central to inverness. We stayed 2 nights and had quality sleep but below standard customer service.
On arrival we were checked in pretty quick but with a receptionist that really didn't want to be there, obviously being at home watching TV would have been more suited.
We went to our room up and around the old aging stairs with an array of old meets modern pictures of custom art everywhere.
The room was very large but very outdated. The shower was dangerous and I am baffled at how it was allowed especially with high h&s standards as the shower head was right next to the wall with a sloping bath head. So you couldn't get under the shower to have a shower but hold one hand against the wall and lean into it. This was reported to the reception with little interest taken. I also reported the power socket in the bathroom as it was faulty and we couldn't use it however no one came to fix it.
Breakfast was a typical breakfast spread with one vegetarian sausage option and no vegan options. You could order kippers for breaky but they took 20 minutes. The staff are the reason I gave a 3, they were lovely, friendly and gave great customer service. Making up for the reception where they really didn't bother with anything.
On check out we waited in the reception for an hour before getting the train and we watched the young receptionist dealing with customers and it was comical to see how much disinterest she showed.
The bed was the only highlight, very comfortable.
Breakfast was good.
Recommendations
There's plenty of choice in Inverness and for value for money I would recommend going somewhere else.
The hotel has leaky ceilings where you can see water damage, we didn't have any hot water to have a shower and the whole place is in need of a complete reform.

Staff delightfully and so helpfull. Restaurant very good too. Very central for everything.
