First let me start by saying as someone who has spent half of my life in thr restaurant industry and the vast majority of that time spent as a server, it is of paramount importance to know the food you will be serving inside and out. Ingredients and seasoning. Garnish. All of it. Even what kind of oil theyre using. The type and quality of the meat.
Ok, on with the review. The young lady who was our server, as sweet as she was, needs major retraining regarding the food and ingredients. She called cotija cheese "cottage cheese" which it definitely is not. Cottage cheese is a mixture of curds and whey essentially. Wet. Cotija is a dry and crumbly cheese, a bit salty. A minor mistake but its not good to form certai pre-meal expectations only to get something different. We were disappointed with this because my mother who is quite picky expected to have the cottage cheese on the side (from my salad) to accompany her empanadilla but we of course didnt get that. Because cotija. Even if cotija translates to cottage, its not the same and should be accurately described. Then, the salad that came with my meal as one of two sides had ingredients she neglected to mention despite me specifically asking what was on it. She didnt tell me about the sweetened cranberries of which there were a large handful, and which i both do not like and am not supposed to eat. There was also bell pepper she failed to mention. According to the server the only dressings were ranch and raspberry vinaigrette. I chose the ranch for the same reason im not eating sweetened cranberries, sugar. The ranch was terrible to be honest. Obviously some ben e kieth or cisco cheap dressing. Very eggy, tasted too much like mayo. Sorry but ranch needs to be zesty and savory. Not... ugh.
The canoa i ordered was a plantain stuffed with beef and topped with cheddar. The cheddar was cheap tasting, average mild cheddar or medium at best. A white cheddar would have been a zillion times better looking And tasting.
The ground beef had a weird taste.. sorta like they used some kind of cheap oil or meat for browning the used water and simmered it to bring back some moisture. The plantain itself was perfect however.
Their espresso isnt actually espresso. Its espresso roast, brewed like normal coffee.
Overall i would give this place a 5/10 or 3/5. They missed huge with the cheap dressing, choice of cheese, malinformed server, and nothing-special ground beef. Even a little salt would have gone a long way and i DO NOT usually salt my food at home.
The plantain was good and my usually picky mom enjoyed the empanadilla so at least theres that.
Would i come back? Maybe on a more popular time at night and hope that perhaps the cook or prep was simply slacking that day, and that the waiter knows the food.
Never be afraid to say "let me go find out for you" a late right answer is better than a wrong one.
