The strength of this theater is the list of prestige and offbeat films. Don't come here for a Marvel movie, but during award season this theater is the only one which shows all the nominees for Best Picture.
This is my favorite theater! I heard a developer is going to tear it down to build apartments. That makes me very sad.
Great older theater. This is my go to place for smaller release films. Seats are well maintained and the staff is friendly.
Popcorn tasted old and stale and theater sound was terrible. Needs upgrades
Regularly has the best selection of commercial films in Austin. My favorite along with Austin Film Society.
We love this place, however the sound quality of Chappaquitic last night was terrible. The previews were extremely loud and the movie was extremely soft. People in the theater were complaining out loud.
Usually Alamo Draft House gets the popular vote on best theater in Austin however the Regal Arbor 8 at Great Hills wins on a note vote. This is THE place to see independent movies in Austin. Most of the time you can show up 10 minutes before a movie and not worry about if you will have to sit in the front row, it's usually not crowded except for peak times on the weekends. It's located in the Arboretum area so there are plenty of places to go before or after the movies. If you don't quite feel like dealing with the crowds of Alamo, come see something different at Regal Arbor 8.
I like that they show movies that other theaters do not.
This is the only ArtHouse movie theater I know of on the Northside, near the Arboretum/Domain.
Typical theater food fare, though they try and class it up with little bistro tables in the lobby. Definite food highlight is the roasted cinnasugar almonds or pecans.
You pay reg movie tix prices here, but they have a free rewards program you can sign up for to earn popcorn/soda & discount kickbacks.
The seats aren't particularly comfortable and you can tell the theater is in need of a facelift, but until something better comes along that offers indie film scene viewings or the price of gas goes down so the drive to Violet Crown isn't such a punch in the wallet; this will do, Pig, this will do.
A smaller theatre with no fancy screens or seats. However, all the really good smaller films show here. People that work here are very friendly too.
My wife and I went here for a fathom special event. This theater is not well maintained and grossly understaffed. We waited in line for snacks for 15 min and we were 4th in line. Also someone watching the event shut off the theater lights when it started...
A slightly up scaled version of a nornal movie theater. Adequate
Clean but needs updated, still a good movie theater
The theater was well maintained and although it doesn't have the largest auditoriums, they are great for an art house theater.
Concessions were properly staffed and the popcorn was above par. We will definitely be going back.
While pretty pedestrian in its amenities, the selection of films screened at this theater is pretty wonderful for anyone with even the tiniest cinephile tendencies. Lots of limited release and indie films hit this theater and not many others in Central Texas. As another reviewer pointed out, there's no feeling of pretentiousness here, and often the crowds are comprised of quite a bit older folk. As an aside, I'm a bit embarrassed about the number of times I've been to this theater without being a Regal rewards program member.
Great place for independent movies. Cozy old style theater.
You can find many Art House movies here. Nice location, enough parking.
I've been coming to this theater for over 10 years now, and I highly recommend it. I've never had a problem with the staff, even if it's a totally new crew, they've always been super friendly and accommodating. If you like indie, art house or foreign, this is the place. This is not a giant megaplex showing the latest Hollywood regurgitations, nor does it have a bar or serve you food in the theater. Instead, this place has character and soul, and like others have mentioned one can always find a seat and they offer all the other refreshments including alcohol that you can get anywhere else. I'll probably come here until this place vaporizes or I do, whichever comes first.
Only the most highly rated films are shown here. Love this place.
Every. Single. Time. We go to a movie here there s baby boomer-aged people who are talking over the movie. I didn t pay to hear you talk, Sharon!
Great no nonsense theater where you can catch the big movies as well as some that are harder to find. I came here to see free solo since this was one of the only theaters in Austin showing it which I really appreciated. Also they serve beer and drinks!
A true Austin treasure. More than just an art house theater.
Nice theatre. Expensive drinks and popcorn but fairly large sizes. Next time I'll get smalls.
The good: this theater offers indie/arthouse films in a a clean, tranquil comfortable setting, convenient times and seldom crowded.
The bad: Was shocked to find that their newly available wine and beer is insanely expensive and require ridiculous hoop-jumping; yes, even 60+ must show ID, you must put on a wrist band, and if you are purchasing a second glass for someone else, you must make two separate trips, two separate purchases. A stingy cup of chardonnay costs $12.98. Lesson learned: will NEVER purchase concessions here. Won't get fooled again!
Great local theater with the best movies in town. The staff is terrific, especially Brenda. We look forward to seeing her every time we come there. Only one suggestion to the management. Turn up the thermostats. It's often uncomfortable without a jacket.
Comfortable experience. Not as fancy as the newer theatres but everything seemed clean and well taken care of.
Old school theater experience. Better selection of Independents than most theaters in town.
Grateful we gave this theatre in the area that brings unconventional/independent films to our area
Ok. Little artsy movie theatre. Serves Mr. Pibb! Thanks.
Love having The Arbor theatre to see movies seldom carried by anyone else. I love it s convenient location and that it is close to shopping and restaurants I like. The staff is always friendly and helpful, the popcorn fresh. There are the usual crazy prices for popcorn, drinks, candy etc. but that is true everywhere.
A great movie theater, the only Regal theater in Texas which is dedicated to showing alternative, independent films, foreign films & restored classics. Staff are gracious & profesional. It is very clean & well maintained. There is cafe seating for guests between films.
Love this theater for the movies they show. I love documentaries and artistic films.
Saw a Fathom Event at this theater. Not reserved seating and old style seats (no recline and no back movement). Theater room was a bit dirty, but thought the waiting area was super cute with tables and chairs. Typical food and drinks available, and had Starbucks beverages. Helpful staff too.
Great theater, but I hate watching tv commercials before a movie. Tv trailers I can do and movie trailers are great but tv commercials like I am sitting at home is no bueno.
That being said I would come back again.
I saw that new Spider Man 3 and it was as good as Papa John's advertised.
This place is super hard to find using Google maps.
The chairs are comfortable and the bathrooms are clean.
Regal Arbor is our favorite movie house, been there many times. But now a developer wants to tear it down for more $#%^% apartments. Rise up and protest!
Great, though aging, art house theater. They show films you wouldn't get to see anywhere else. Been going there for years, highly recommended.
The movie theater had old school style seats that don't even lean back (let alone the new ones that recline and let you put your feet up). There's no automated ticket machine, so you literally have to stand in line at the ticket window. And the concessions as well as the ticket prices were just as expensive as the movie theaters that have all the luxuries.
It's my home away from home. Best independent film selection in Austin <3
I Love the Regal Arbor 8 theater. The only theater in Austin that plays great indie, and foreign films.
Regal Arbor has been a mainstay of art cinema in Austin for 20 plus years! I will be sorry to see them go!
Not the lounger seats, but the staff are so happy and nice, they make up for it.
I love this theatre and Brenda, DAHLING, for the most part but I find the visual quality frustrating. Almost every film we see there seems darkly lit in need of a bigger bulb in the projectors. Only theatre 7 seems adequate. . Surely every film was not made to look candle lit. Plainly it's difficult to see even outdoor daylight shots with any bright clarity.
This is the only theater in N Austin where I can see truly thought-provoking, intelligent, and engaging indie films. Soo done with lame, mainstream superhero franchise money flicks that are being made nowadays. When I go to Regal 8, I don't have to leave my brain behind in the car.
LOVE having more than one arthouse theater in town.
Clean, comfortable seating, nice staff and reasonable temperatures. A variety of films of all gendre
The theater is just average but I love the movie selection and the crowds are always very manageable. One of my favorite spots to catch a flick.
Depending on your kind of theater, this particular one is not best for a movie date night and a bottle of wine. They are over extremely stringent with their booze policy and require 1 ID and a WRISTBAND per person per drink. This means in order to grab a drink while watching the movie, we each had to leave the theater to grab the drink at the counter, show our ID and have our wristbands marked (3 drink maximum). This seems a little much when there are a multitude of other theaters in the area that cater to this kind of date night! And to boot, the seats are just okay. I d only go through all of that for reclining seats and a blanket!
Good independent films, nice seating. They are(or maybe were) able to serve beer and wine. Adequate parking. Easy to get to from the highway.
Audio from the movie cut out and house lights came on 5 minutes before the end of the movie. Meanwhile the end of the movie (spoilers!) continued playing without any audio. They fixed the problem by going back 15 or so minutes in the movie, wasting our time. Finally, the same audio cutting out issue occurred again, right before the very last line of the movie was spoken!
Such a great theater for those lesser-known and under appreciated movies. No, it's not an Alamo, but they always have the best films in town.
I really enjoy the selection of independent films at this theater and it is only a few miles from my house, plus moviepass is accepted here which is a huge bonus.
The only downsides are that the seating is not stadium seating and as a result, I find that I end up moving if someone sits in front of me and I can't see over their head, and the screens are pretty small compared to newer theaters, the sound has been good quality in my experience though despite other reviews.
I will keep coming back for the great selection of films, the proximity to my house, and the friendly staff!
Always check the upcoming calendar for any movies you missed seeing in theaters. Makes a great surprise date night sharing a classic or nostalgic movie in theaters.
Excellent selection of intellectual movies. Like all Arbor theaters, sadly, the "up-selling" is obnoxious, from buying tickets to buying popcorn, that I will only go there if a film is at no other location. When people want to buy tickets, sell them tickets and don't ask to donate for a cause Arbor will take full credit, for $X more. This is often duplicated when buying food. If I want a small drink, don't ask me if I want a large drink for $x more .and then a large popcorn for $Y more then candy for $Z more then donating to a cause for Arbor's recognition.
Good lineup of films. Movie start times work well with my schedule. Only complaint is the that the seats could be cleaner and more comfortable.
Always enjoy the Arbor. Wish they would update the seats.
This place is awesome. I hope they never redecorate it.
It's a movie theater. I found the full bright lighting to be glaring.
What used to be a state-of-the-art theater, is now running second-run films in this area. I enjoy the comfortable seats, but they don't turn into recliners. I enjoyed the sound and production values which were still very competitive in today's market. So if you're thinking of a place to see a show that you've missed on its first go-round, this is a good spot.
Love their selection of films. If you love indie and alternative films, this is the place for you!
Not the most comfortable or nice theater, but plays the best movies.
This is my go to place for independent films, documentaries, and all the fun films that the multiplex theaters don't typically show.
Went in. Paid 18 bucks for a tub of popcorn, a soda, and a bottled water. Popcorn was stale in the first batch, and the second I made the mistake of having butter put on it. I've worked in a restaurant in the past, I've used imitation butter. This wasn't imitation butter, this was some type of pseudo-canola oil substance that made the popcorn inedible. Did we expect Alamo? No, Alamo is Alamo, but for the amount of money tickets were (same as an Alamo) and the overpriced food even by theater standards, this is a no-go.
Good experience. No reserved seating, no recliners. I think they show movies that don't typically come out in bigger theaters. Saw Mr. Roger's documentary and enjoyed the theater and movie.
I like this theater because they show substantive movies, not a lot of junk. Very nice people/employees. The theater itself could use a little bit of a face lift, but it's clean and very pleasant.
Nothing really special about the theatre except it was located in a fairly nice area of Austin and because the movie we went to see was too progressive for my own city, we had to travel an hour plus to watch it here.
One of my favorite movie theaters in Austin. If you are looking for amazing independent indie movies this is your choice. BTW, I love the lady who check tickets at the door..."table for two?"
A great indie theater in danger of being destroyed. So sad to hear there are plans to tear it down for new construction. Go there and support them. The popcorn is delicious.
Good for watching somewhat old movies. Movie hall and Screen is small.
Great people great service. They have ppv fights sometimes as well.
Great selection for movies. Affordable and wasn't super crowded.
