Now this is a difficult review. I mean the art at GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) is constantly changing, so to base my view on that would be foolish. I have attended GOMA probably twice a year for the preceding 4 years (not out of my own desire), so this review is based entirely on the delivery of art and the facilities at GOMA, NOT the "art" itself.

Now I should start with a caveat. I am in no way an art connoisseur nor could I probably tell the difference between the real Mona Lisa and one that has been printed from a $50 Canon printer. However, as a fair dinkum Aussie bloke, I'd like to think I can appreciate talent where talent is present.

The issue with GOMA is that the level of talent in the artwork (if it can be referred to as that) is minimal. Don't get me wrong, there's some beauties in there, but for the general cohort there's a distinct lack of anything there. The last visit literally contained a video of a lady eating a tomato. It wasn't even a fancy tomato!

So onto the actual review... For the distinct lack of any good art in there, GOMA does a brilliant job at presenting that 'art' in a manner that makes you believe you're in that fancy art place in Paris or something (the Louvre?). They have like fancy lights, fancy views outside, people at the entrance that make you remove your bags, people standing around watching you watch the art as though you yourself were a piece of art (which is quite flattering if I'm honest) and it just smells fancy in there. All round it's a solid effort by GOMA.

However, if you really want to see some talent, go to the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG). It's less distance of a walk from the bus and the art can actually be called art! It's incredible! Those fellas have some true talent. The QAG's acronym may be more bogan that GOMA, but unlike GOMA there's no bogan artwork in there.

Must visit in Brisbane. Always has something interesting to see. Well maintained and clean. Has something for the kids to do most of the time. Could use free parking, but you can't have everything.

Lovely gallery. Saw the "artist in residence" John Honeywill, nice set up, everyone gathered round his "studio" and asked questions while painting. Very informal, casual way of connecting art and artists. Thanks QAGOMA.

All galleries are great but this is Queensland's pride and joy. A wonderful precinct with world class exhibitions, surrounded by the hub of Brisbane arts and culture and beautiful Southbank with all it offerings .

I totally loved showing my UK Guest around this wonderful gallery. Knowledgeable and engaging staff added to our enjoyment. The Aboriginal Exhibits were amazing. I felt truly touched by the profound beauty of each painting. Appreciating, exhibiting and celebrating the unique art of Australia makes me proud. My friend who is a designer was enamoured by the colours of Jacaranda. I'm expecting that will be a new addition to her paint range very soon. Inspired by our visit.

Wonderfu, but irritating children touch everything and do not know how to behave.

Do not bring your children here!

Love this art gallery! Visited on my own and it was amazing, but went back and did a tour with Jane which made it a lot better. She was so passionate and really explain so many things about the art that brought a lot more depth to the gallery and art.

GOMA may have become Brisbane's most interesting place to be. Perhaps do not take young children to Ben Quilty but there are a myriad of other exciting exhibits presently showing. Check out GOMA'S 2 wonderful art filled shops, Riverside al fresco cafe and relaxing restaurant.

Shame on GOMA for choosing to show the work of Donald Friend, a known and self-confessed child sexual abuser and explain it away as behaviour accepted within the arts community.
Incredibly disrespectful and hurtful to anyone who has suffered at the hands of these monsters.
