Now this is a difficult review. I mean the art at GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) is constantly changing, so to base my view on that would be foolish. I have attended GOMA probably twice a year for the preceding 4 years (not out of my own desire), so this review is based entirely on the delivery of art and the facilities at GOMA, NOT the "art" itself.
Now I should start with a caveat. I am in no way an art connoisseur nor could I probably tell the difference between the real Mona Lisa and one that has been printed from a $50 Canon printer. However, as a fair dinkum Aussie bloke, I'd like to think I can appreciate talent where talent is present.
The issue with GOMA is that the level of talent in the artwork (if it can be referred to as that) is minimal. Don't get me wrong, there's some beauties in there, but for the general cohort there's a distinct lack of anything there. The last visit literally contained a video of a lady eating a tomato. It wasn't even a fancy tomato!
So onto the actual review... For the distinct lack of any good art in there, GOMA does a brilliant job at presenting that 'art' in a manner that makes you believe you're in that fancy art place in Paris or something (the Louvre?). They have like fancy lights, fancy views outside, people at the entrance that make you remove your bags, people standing around watching you watch the art as though you yourself were a piece of art (which is quite flattering if I'm honest) and it just smells fancy in there. All round it's a solid effort by GOMA.
However, if you really want to see some talent, go to the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG). It's less distance of a walk from the bus and the art can actually be called art! It's incredible! Those fellas have some true talent. The QAG's acronym may be more bogan that GOMA, but unlike GOMA there's no bogan artwork in there.
