Oh my.... How expensive is this restaurant for what you receive - vs the competition? Ridiculous. Steaks - no better than other places - are $40 and over. Every thing is priced separately. Who wants to pay $9 for a baked potato? $11 for a side salad. This is ridiculous - even with a groupon. No wonder the restaurant was empty - it was a Monday.

How do they even stay in competition??? Never going back - even with a groupon.

I would like to say thank you to the staff at Plaza 111. My Dad and his wife had reservations today 9/16 for his wife's b-day. They made it a day they will not forget. Thank you so much. You went beyond!

I find this place to be currently over rated and over priced. It doesn't live up to it's past reputation. For what they charge for a steak, it should be impeccable. Mine was served lukewarm to cool as though it had sat for 10-15 minutes before being served. There are some great steakhouses in KC. This is not one of them.

Ate here during restaurant week. Not impressed with the food or the service. Would not return. Not worth the cost. Do not order the mac & cheese, tastes gritty. Much prefer Capitol Grille. Their lobster mac & cheese is fantastic!

Went to a work dinner and it was the worst experience ever . Served the wrong cut of meat and it was Burnt to a crisp. Most expensive dinner my dog has ever had. She liked it, I stopped on the way home for carry out . The veggie tray was the best thing served there tonight.

Still have the iced vegies to start. Bread was straight off the shelf. Smoked salmon appetizer was 3/5. Prime rib was tough, fatty and overall underwhelming. Service was slow, not a memorable experience or one worth repeating.

Steak left a lot to be desired, food took a long time to come out and waitress checked on us constantly. Overall, not an upscale experience. Choose elsewhere if you're looking for a romantic evening.

I have only been to this establishment once, for happy hour-I was completely surprised! The happy hour menu was very reasonable, and the food choices varied along with the prices. I was definitely pleasantly surprised!

Full disclosure: We came during restaurant week, where they do a 3 course meal for $33 as a promotion.

Above all, my main issue is the service. I can accommodate a few bad food items as an off night, but bad service is inexcusable. Our waiter treated us, and the tables around us, as second class. He was brash and generally rude. Our overall time was 2 and a half hours sat, with food in front of us for maybe 30 minutes.

We didn't see our waiter with water for the first 2 courses. He walked by the check with my credit card 3 times while it sat for 20 minutes, and 20 minutes more before we had it back

The silverware was kind of dirty and we had to scratch things off.

Ordered the fillet minion with scallops, a salad, and creme brulee. The salad was iceberg lettuce, Kraft bacon bits, and ranch dressing.

The steak was a large cut (unexpected) and cooked rare as ordered, but wasn't seasoned. At all. It also had a kind of vulgar iron taste; I suspect they got cheaper cuts for restaurant week. Honestly, I'd prefer a strip or a smaller fillet than a large, gross fillet.

The creme brulee was thin and soupy.

I'm willing to pay more for decent food, but this wasn't decent. I'd honestly prefer they just serve better food in smaller portions if there's a promotion.

I would rather go to The Reiger for their KC Strip; it's a better cut that's better seasoned and cheaper (it's also got a better atmosphere). Hell, I'd go to Anton's for a fillet and cook it myself.

We won't be back, ever.

While expensive, you get what you pay for: phenomenal food, excellent service of high profile caliber, and an overall special dining experience. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a special night out! The Kansas City Strip Steak was cooked to perfection!!

I went on a date here a few days ago. I was really hoping to be impressed. I work at Longhorn steakhouse in Leawood on the side and value quality steak and salmon. We ordered a filet and the salmon at the Plaza III. Steak was cooked correctly but nothing special. Also the salmon was very dry. I had to send it back. Mac and cheese tasted funny. No music was playing, atmosphere was lacking. I will probably never go back. The price for what you get is ridiculous.

I had the filet and it was amazing best steak I ever had for 20 dollars but I would recommend that for a appetizer don't get the scallops because the sauce is subpar and they only give you 3 scallops and they do not cook them right.

The food was God awful, and Chris (our server) is quite possibly the only person I've EVER tipped 10% too. He was THAT bad.

Do not go anywhere near this place. People spend $240+ here and are so worried about feeling like they wasted their money, they force themselves to like it. This place is atrocious. ATROCIOUS.

It was alright. We went there for happy hour on Friday. I got house red flights for $6 and actually the wines were pretty good. On the other hand, my husband got red varietal flights for $11 and 2 wines out 4 tasted funky as if the cork got messed up. Overall, it was decent.

For the money, there are better choices. I regret to do this, but the Plaza III has lost its touch. As a KC native, I can come up with several other recommendations. My wife and I spent over $90 for our steaks, and I'm pretty sure I could produce better steaks.

Ate here for the first time and enjoyed it very much! Tried several appetizers and a ribeye. The crab cakes were amazing, scallops were huge, and the steak was extremely tender and cooked perfectly! Good service too, and I always appreciate a coat check.

My family and I came here for restaurant week. I've been meaning to try it for years. The menu was pre-fixe. I ordered the side salad (too much dressing) the filet (very good) and the apple pie (excellent). The atmosphere was quite charming. It reminded me of a place my grandparents would visit often. It seems right out of Mad Men. The bread was really good. It got mixed reviews at our table, but only because not everyone enjoys sourdough as much as I do.

The service was okay. I expected better, but the helpers did a most excellent job.

Ooooh steak. Giant portions, great food. We ordered the usual app, steak, and side. All said and done we had enough food to last us another two meals. Our server was amazing and friendly. My only criticism would be the decor, the plastic covered booths are incredibly tacky.

Plaza III is a pretty typical high end steakhouse with good steaks. What really made this one stand out was how welcomed I was made to feel from the management. The bartender Morgan has been there for 10 years and hasn't lost one bit of her professionalism nor enthusiasm. The star of the show on this night was the creamed spinach. I would drive across state lines to have it again.

I have been here 4 times in the last 12 years! It is a pricey place so unless you plan to dish out at least 42$ for a [smaller] filet mignon I suggest you eat elsewhere! Now if you don't mind the prices then this is the place to go! Its been around for years and years! So that alone should tell you that its an amazing place, not just to eat either! The atomospere is absolutely lovely! Its dim lit and mostly quiet so it works well for a romantic date or a even just a nice dinner with a family member or business associate! Although I would recommend going for lunch in those cases!
They also have back rooms that seat several and are great for privacy! The lighting can range from dim to normal! We actually celebrated my husband's grandmother's 80th and 85th birthday there, in a back room! They were great because the little ones had room to run and be themselves while not disturbing other patrons with their little squeaks of joy or grumpiness! I think both times we had a group of at least 18 or more!
My husband has taken me here for 2 anniversaries! One of them was a few days ago and even though it had been about 5 years since our last visit! Which the last time [5 yrs ago] was the best visit of all IMO! A few days ago we went and it was lovely for the most part! We splurged and got the 50$ filet mignon this time! We figured what's an extra 8$s at this point!
My few issues were; with the cost of the steaks we would have thought that they would have been cooked properly! I ordered mine medium which is typically red with little to no raw meat inside! I ended up with a steak that was still pretty much raw from right inside the top to bottom! There was so much blood under the steak I almost couldn't eat it! I mean the center was barley warm! Since the server only came to our table 2 times after that I ended up just eating it that way instead of having it warmed up more! It was still good but not great! I brought over half home and re seared it the next day! It was awesome then! My husbands was ordered medium well and his came out cooked not much more than mine! I don't even know if his would have been considered even medium either! He still ate all of it to my surprise! Other than that and the part where it was hard to get our servers attention it was a nice evening!
Oh before I forget the 2 things about this last visit that were upsetting to me personally! IT REEKED OF SEAFOOD! And not the good kind either! It smelled like bad fish in almost the whole place! I had to walk outside in like 30 degree weather just to get fresh air! I eventually became immune to it but yeah that was bad! Also the girls bathroom was pretty gross! There were used paper towels over flowing the trash can and all over the floor and under the sink! The stall I used had a toilet that did not seem very clean! Usually places like that are the only public places I don't squat over the toilets at but not this time! It smelled of used sanitary napkins [pads]! It was like the trash was full of them! That smell was about as bad as the fish smell in the actual restaurant! The bathroom sink had water marks all over it as did the mirror! Which suggested it hadn't been cleaned in at least a few days! At least not properly! The employees were not the friendliest either! The lady at the front desk was very utilitarian, she didn't smile or say thank you or welcome or have a nice day! It was just a do you have reservations and what's the name? She was just standing there doing nothing! I could understand if she was busy but she wasn't doing anything! That was pretty much it and the server wasn't much better! At least we got a hi out of her! But her tone was kind of cold towards us, honestly!
We a had a lovely time for the most part but I would say the overall opinion is that this place has started to go down hill in every area while still charging high prices! Maybe I will stick to carry out! Especially with the cheesecake!

There's something to be said for an old school steak house, and Plaza III can lay claim to everything good about an old school steak house. Everything from the darkened rooms to the extremely knowledgeable wait staff, Plaza III had it covered.

We brought a vegetarian with us for this visit and she was not disappointed - the sides were more than enough to keep her occupied along with the great wine selection.

The midwest-sourced black angus prime cut New York strip was just right to this Texan, and my other dining mate's tomahawk cut was on the money. Would go back next time we're in KC.

This is the place to go if you want steak! Loved everything! I got the Kansas City cut and could not be happier. Everything is a la cart and we made sure to try everything... Mushrooms, creamed spinach, onion straws, hashbrowns. The crab cakes are amazing. Dessert is not to be missed either.

This place lost its reputation, it's highly over rated and overpriced as compare to it's service and food. Customer service below average and food taste is not good either. not recommended for special occasions. Last night over dinner experience was not outstanding. Capital Grill or Ruth Chris are still better choices.

The people that recommend Capital Grille over Plaz...

The people that recommend Capital Grille over Plaza III hurt my soul. I suppose they do have a lot of tourists that don't know the difference. Capital Grille is a regional chain. Plaza III is one of the last of the original old school Kansas City Steakhouses. Now that Insurance Lighting hit the Hereford House and the Golden Ox isn't what it used to be, Plaza III is one of the few legends that remain standing. You'll get good food at either place (the people who fitch about a Kansas City Steakhouse not being able to do steaks like they do them in Pittsburgh or not cooking the Salmon as well as well as they do them at a chain), but at Plaza III you get 'em the way they are supposed to be in Kansas City.

The food is great (order the Brie for 2 as an appetizer) and for God's sake, order a steak at a steakhouse; and the service is wonderful. I like to go early and just hang out at the bar and drink before dinner. After dinner, check out the lower room if the live band is there. You can make an entire night out of Plaza III if you are there at the right time.

As an aside, I agree the Capital Grille has good food. Personally, I think the service is awful. I used to go regularly but stopped after I went there with a reservation and a date one night and the girl at the front made me us wait 45 minutes before seating us. I suppose they were really busy, but that's unacceptable to me.

I have never had bad service at Plaza III.

I loved the entertainment here. The food was good. My steak was a little undercooked and I got sick when I got home. I requested medium-well and it was almost rare. There was a guy that sang and tap danced and was amazing. Added a little romantic flare to our night. Honestly though the food is stuff you can easily make at home a lot cheaper. Cut up veggies some ranch dip a fillet mignon with hardly any seasoning and basic mashed potatoes. The shrimp was not good. I would come back but only for a super special occasion.

Their happy hour is awesome. I posted a pic of their happy hour menu, just look at it. It feels like youre getting away with something when you can have steak, oysters, and a nice drink for less than $20.

I havent been here for dinner, so I have no idea how it compares to other nearby restaurants in terms of crowd or price, but its a beautiful historic interior with a professional and formal staff.

Moved to KC about a year and a half ago and had some friends coming in to visit. They requested a good steak and didn't care what the cost was. I actually had to do some asking around, we have a Big Green Egg and don't believe we could find one better than we make at home. Plaza III was suggested. I read the reviews and was a bit leery after seeing some people experiences, knowing that we would be spending a good amount of money on a meal that might not be excellent. I am glad we went!

I ordered the oscar filet and white cheddar potatoes. My husband had the prime rib, as did another companion and the other diner had the t-bone. They ordered a baked potato as well as salad with bacon dressing. I had a bit of my husbands salad and that dressing is delicious. All of our steaks were cooked to perfection. The oscar filet comes with a large shrimp on in instead of crab meat, I would have preferred the crab, but the bearnaise sauce and the steak were so good, they could have served it without the shrimp and I wouldn't have cared. The white cheddar potato was incredible and all of my dinner mates had wished they had ordered them. The ONLY complaint (and it's not really a complaint) is that when the salads came the bacon dressing was only luke warm, so they asked that it be heated more, which our waitress promptly took care of.

Our waitress was a very nice girl, not "snooty" like in some reviews that I read. Conversational, but not in the way. The price was high ($400 for the four of us - my husband and I spend $240 with tip), we also had 2 bottles of wine in that $400 bill which were around $70 each. Based on our experience I did not mind paying the bill and I was concerned by other reviews that the was going to be just okay and I would be irritated that we spent so much for mediocre.

I would say that this was the best food I have ever eaten in a restaurant in my life and would certainly recommend it, if someone is looking for a great steak. (But go with the white cheddar potato over the baked, you can get a baked anywhere. ;) )

We did catch the last set of jazz downstairs and wish that we had been able to get down their earlier, it was very good too.

Worst food in the area. Been all over Kansas City for a steak and this is the worst. Go somewhere else. Carpaccio was completely frozen to an actual ice cube. Ribeye was not an inch thick like we were told and overcooked. I ordered medium rare, I got medium well. The steak was absolutely flavorless. How does a steakhouse mess up a steak? Nobody offered to fix anything. I was treated as a complainer. This restraunt should be taken off the plaza. Ingredients were old and flavorless. Wine selection was week. Today Im sad as the plaza 3 was a staple of Kansas City and now it's just garbage. I don't know what happened. It was my parents 50th wedding anniversary and my mom couldn't eat at all because the chicken wasn't cooked and her hash browns were cooked so much that she couldn't cut them. We spoke as a family today and vowed never to go back to the plaza 3. Way to go plaza 3 you have lost 15 loyal customers to horrible food and a manager that doesn't know how to please customers. My 73 year old dad said he would prefer the Hereford house from now on. If you've ever listened to anything "GO SOMEWHERE ELSE..."

Plaza III is "The Steakhouse". We have been to Plaza III more than a dozen times for STEAK... salads, drinks and dessert too... but can't comment on seafood, turkey, chicken or any other type of protein that they might serve.

The staff is great. After seating and a couple drinks, we ask to see the selections and they wheel the steak cart over, explaining the cuts (which is tradition, though we no longer need it) and let us select our steaks. We are fairly easy to serve, mostly ordering ribeye or fillet.

I prefer medium rare while my spouse prefers medium, and the kitchen gets it right. This is typically our date night, away from kids, and we typically accompany the main course with a good bottle of cab or maybe a rioja.

Never been disappointed with the experience. Are there places that serve a better steak; maybe, but not many. Are there places with even better atmosphere? Maybe, but we like the ambience here and like to be left to our own chatter. Are there cheaper places? Certainly, but that is not what we seek.

The service is very good. The steak selections (and the process of making the selection) is great. Plaza III provides us with just the type of evening we are looking for when getting away from the kids for a night of grown-up fun.

Well done! (actually, perfectly medium rare please...!)

Went to Plaza III on a Saturday night with my wife. It was dead. The atmosphere (or lackthereof) was old, quiet, and uninviting. The entire place and schtick is dated. My Wife got the seafood platter - barely got a few tiny crab legs, one scallop and a nasty lobster tail. Steak soup tasted like something out of a Campbells soup can, literally. It was flat out awful, and I will never go back.

Went here with my girlfriend after getting a discount Gift Card at Costco. The service here is fine, but the food is TERRIBLE. Girlfriend got lobster Mac & Cheese which tasted like old carpet. The bread was stale. I got a filet. I could have cooked it better myself.

Overpriced. The food is terrible. Don't eat here.
