Service and attention to detail VERY impressive. These people are serious about staying close to all your wishes. Beautiful place inside and out. Wife's Red Snapper was salted to the point that it was difficult to finish and my pork tenderloin dish was good but it lacked personality, could have done that at home. Nice place but expected great food with my great service.

One of my favorite restaurants on Cape May , good service wonderful food. Dorothy ,our server, is perfectly attentive and the food is excellent. A must when you are in Cape May.
Great view of Cape May Beach while sitting on the enclosed porch. We didn't know it was BYOB but luckily they had some wines from the local winery for sale. We ordered the Cabernet Sauvignon which was not bad. The food, service and atmosphere were great! We started with the crab salad and oysters for the first course. We had the orichett and lobster pasta to share for the second course. For the main course, we had the salmon and the halibut which was perfectly prepared and delicious! Very fancy place with live piano music.
This is the second year I went here with my mom and her friend. Prior to last year I have never been to a bed and breakfast so I didn t know what to expect. I have to say I fell in love with Peter Shields the moment I walked in. They have a beautiful stained glass window when you first come in that is captivating. We ate there each visit and the food is okay. Nothing to write home about. The best thing was dessert. The wait staff was very nice and accommodating. They have a lil happy hour with wine and cheese that was ok. The wine isn t the best but, it s free so it s better than nothing. The shower head wasn t the best. I don t know if it had to do with the water pressure but, it was barely coming out. They have a nice lil kitchen area where you can have refreshments like coffee, water, soda, and snacks. It s a perfect place to get away to! Love the fireplaces since we have been going during the winter season. It makes for a cozy night.
Superbly executed dining experience, food, ambiance, service. A classic Cape May Fine Dining Restaurant with an ocean view! Nothing better in the city!
Me an my wife ate here and we loved the food! The service was good even though we came under dressed for the restaurant. The price is costly but would say it is worth it.
It's not often that the whole dining experience is amazing from the moment you walk in until the moment you walk out. That was our experience on Thursday, January 3rd 2019. First off, the beautiful historic building was tastefully decorated for the holidays. Our coats were taken at the front door and we were seated right on time for our reservation. The tables in the room we were seated in were far enough apart to enjoy private conversation. We were then greeted by Peter, our server for the evening. He was very helpful with making sure accommodations were handled for a food allergy. We know the menu changes but between the two of us our hanger steak and NY Strip were cooked to perfection and tasted even better. Peter also surprised us with a mid meal course of scallops! Attention to detail was evident at every step of this dining experience. We had a wonderful evening here during our honeymoon and can't wait to go back any chance we get!
Everything about this restaurant is top-shelf. Beginning with the stairway that leads up to the inn, the wraparound porch, and the entrance into the inn. We were welcomed by its friendly staff and a gentleman playing a baby grand piano as we walked in the front door. Play it again Sam. Beautifully decorated dining rooms set the mood for dinner. Very knowledgeable staff. This Chef knows what he/she is doing. Best pork chop you will ever taste. Salads and appetizers are very fresh and creatively presented. We had four different desserts and every one of them delicious. AND it's BYOB ! Has to be the BEST restaurant in Cape May.
My husband and I stayed at The Peter Shields Inn for a weekend staycation. The Inn did a great job of adhering to CDC guidelines and sanitizing. We stayed in room #4 and it was great. This room has a balcony and a large bathroom with a soaking tub. They had to change their amenities due to Covid and they did a great job. They have a hospitality room with drinks and the afternoon wine/cheese plate were individually packaged for safety. The complimentary bikes and beach chairs were sanitized after each use. If you stay here, please have dinner onsite! The food was amazing! Overall, great trio and we will book again!
Outstanding service and excellent food. All courses were equally good and we VERY much enjoyed our dinner. It is terrific, frankly to have a restaurant of this quality also be BYOB.
Very, very nice! My first time there and thoroughly enjoyed my meal and the ambiance is just so...you know lovely overlooking the ocean. I will be back!
Dined at Peter Shields for my birthday dinner. The total experience was awesome from the service to the meal. Both my wife and I ordered the 4 course chefs tasting. This was incredible to say the least. The celery bisque was delicious. Second course day boat scallops were seared to perfection along with the gnocchi. Third course was grilled beef tenderloin with risotto. This was absolutely the best tenderloin I have ever had. The waffle dessert was to die for! What a awesome job by chef Carl Messick and his staff! Our waiter Petar was a true professional and gentleman. Cannot say enough about the Inn. We will certainly return!
gorgous old mansion faces the atlantic. would be a great experience as an inn with restaurant, but somehow it doesn't work as a restaurant. the servers are loud bossy bulgarians. byo is a plus to hold down costs. lost its luster.
Went for my anniversary, was surprised with glasses of champagne on the house. Took advantage of the fixed price menu, and added a pasta dish. Don't pass on ordering a pasta dish, it was amazing. The service was on point, we wanted for nothing.
Absolutely top-rate food and service. We go back year after year because the experience is magnificent. We are never disappointed and recommend PSI for anyone looking for that special dining experience. You cannot go wrong whether you order pork, steak, chicken, seafood, or fowl. And do not skip their fabulous desserts or coffee beverages!
This is a gorgeous ocean-side mansion that has been converted into a B&B. There are nine total rooms for couples to enjoy. This place is very pricey, but considering the luxury offered the price makes sense. The receptionists are all extremely friendly and accommodating. They leave at 10 PM, however, and lock the front door. After 10 you must use a side entrance that you are given the key for.
All of the rooms have a unique feature of their own (one has a jacuzzi tub, one with a couple's shower, one with a private balcony, etc.) All rooms have AC/heat that can be set to your preferences. A moderately sized flat screen TV is also available for use. My boyfriend and I brought our laptop and an HDMI cable to watch Netflix late at night before bed. A nightly turn-down service is also offered between 6PM and 8PM.
Every morning you are served breakfast, which you reserve a time for at the front desk the day before. The breakfast is excellent, I recommend the pancakes. In the afternoons wine and cheese is served downstairs. Beach towels, beach chairs, umbrellas, and bicycles are available for guests free of charge.
If you go to one of the many fantastic wineries in the area, you can bring back wine and ask the receptionist to put it on ice for you. They will either serve it to you in your room, or hang on to it to be enjoyed at dinner if you choose to dine at the restaurant.
I recommend making a reservation at the in-house restaurant. The food is excellent and high-end. The atmosphere of the restaurant is classy, elegant, and very relaxed. The menu is expensive, but the food is portioned generously. They also have a prix fixe menu. It's a three course meal for each person that includes one appetizer, one entree, and one dessert. You can choose from any of the menu options, and there is only an upcharge for the filet mignon. I recommend the garlic soup and any of their fish entrees. The restaurant specializes in seafood.
My only "complaint" was a cute little pigeon decided he wanted to nest right outside of our window. So around 5 AM, my boyfriend and I were woken up to a strange "cooing" and "prurroooring" sound.
This was my first stay at a B&B, and I think my boyfriend went all out and spoiled any other B&B for me. Staying here made me feel like a princess. It was such a great experience, and so different from the feel of staying at a hotel.
Limited menu but simply mind blowing food. The grounds are gorgeous and the inside is all class. It's BYOB so you save a ton of money. Try the foie gras and lamb chops for 2.
We planned to get married on the Cape May beach which is always weather dependent. As the date drew near the weather forecast was warm and sunny both the day before and after our date so we took our chances. When it became clear that our day would be cold and rainy we called The Peter Shields Inn (where we were staying that night) at 8:30pm the night before the wedding and asked if they could possibly allow us to have our very small and quick ceremony anywhere inside the Inn...we didn t care where as long as we weren t in the elements outside. The events coordinator Amy Gotthardt not only allowed us to get married in the Inn, but in their beautiful lobby next to the baby grand piano. She also Took it upon herself to ask any staff to stay off the steps for the duration of our ceremony. Amy came in early that day and changed what would have been a weather disaster to a warm and beautiful event. We can t thank her enough for going above and beyond to make our small but very important event a beautiful day to remember. Our stay was equally wonderful! Thank you to Amy and the Inn for stepping up at the very last minute to accommodate us. We are forever grateful!! Dean & Laurie DiPietro
I can't say enough about this Inn and the restaurant. We've stayed and ate many times. It's the best food ever. The staff cannot do enough for you. Shelby at the front desk from breakfast to house cleaning and the all time best Carl Messick and his kitchen staff. They are not from this planet. The beach is the best and don't underestimate the 3rd floor room 6. The view and Room are great. The guests that stay here were also incredible. The private balcony enjoyed by everyone, the umbrellas, chairs and beach towels. People, they have La Columbe coffee!
Absolutely amazing. Food and service was outstanding. We made last minute reservations here and couldn't have been more surprised at what a special place we found. Our waiter Christoph was exceptional, knowledgeable and attentive. Food was some of the best we've ever had. We are from Florida and would come back here in a heartbeat should we return to Cape May.
Once again thank you for an amazing dinner! I had the best fillet of my 60 yrs. I could have cut it with a spoon. The wife's scallops were also unbelievable. Service excellent, see you next year. Great place to celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary.
What a wonderful dining experience we had! It was our anniversary so we made a reservation at this gem glad we did! From the atmosphere to the service it was exceptional.
The place it self is beautiful. So much history. Love going to Cape May. We will definitely keep this restaurant on speed dial.
We wanted to try something different so we had the Chef's Tasting Menu. It was fundamental! Kudos to the chef.
Thank you, Peter Shields Restaurant for making our anniversary dinner a memorable one!
Amy the manager needs to sharpen her people skills. She needs to be more welcoming to her customers. She can be rude. Chris the server was FANTASTIC. Made up for Amy. We love going there every year when we visit Cape May.
This is a very upscale restaurant in beautiful Cape May. The food and atmosphere was excellent. I would definitely recommend visiting here when in town. I can't wait to dine on the outside porch!
What can you say. Probably the best restaurant and dining experience in Cape May. Servers and staff are highly friendly and accommodating. Food is always cooked to perfection. And a fantastic views. A+ all around
Romantic ambiance and delicious food! Loved the pianist playing indoors, or if you want to sit overlooking the beach outside that option is great too. Attentive service; loved the summer corn soup, butternut squash bisque, hangar steak, and filet mignon with mushrooms and balsamic onions. Husband enjoyed the Tuna & Salmon duo as well. Probably the most gorgeous restaurant in Cape May; very expensive but worth it.
My wife and I were staying in Wildwood Crest in September, and decided to try Peter Shields restaurant in Cape May (about a 20 minute drive). We thoroughly enjoyed this establishment. The services was perfect. The food was great, and the ambience wonderful (we sat on the side porch). Highly recommended, and we will be going again as we do go to Wildwood Crest at least once a year.
Amazing food! 5 star restaurant. Wait staff is friendly and professional. Food is delicious, prepared with high quality ingredients. The Inn rooms are comfortable each room offers a special charm.
Best place in cape may but ..... that's not saying much .... Bring your own wine ... that's a rule in Cape may in general. Food is good but servings are tiny ... I get it , its seasonal , I understand. But cone on cape may and wildwood Crest!!! Step up your coffee , wine and food game !!!! Sone of us ate bot just fat americans!
Supurb! This was our second visit to PSI and we'll be back. We had the Chef's sampling and everything was delicious! A bit pricey, but worth the splurge.
The Inn (building) and restaurant were great. The hotel/room was dismal. Room had a terrible moldy smell. The shower had no water pressure, furniture was cheap and warn, rug was stained, etc. There was a decorative pillow roll on the bed, when completing the nightly turndown service this pillow roll was placed on the smelly, moldy rug (this pillow was placed on the sheets each day/ the same sheets we slept on). The Inn Keepers apparently know of the smell/mold issue. Two DampRid moisture removable packages were under the bed! What a sham. My wife and I were celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary. Our weekend was great with the exception of the room at Peter Shields Inn. This was the one part of our trip we did not anticipate an issue. We had admired the Inn for years and anticipated an excellent experience. Please eat at Peter Shield Inn, admire the building, but Do Not Stay in a room. Your money will be much better spent elsewhere!
Gorgeous setting with wonderful food and relaxed but efficient service. Ask for a table with a view of the ocean. We were back on April 9 2011, and were not disappointed. It was rather crowded due to the Jass Festival weekend but thanks to the separate small dining rooms, the quiet, intimate feel was maintained.
There are many great restaurants in Cape May, but Peter Shields is consistently the best - for many years. To keep that level of food, service, and atmosphere is a feat.
