My wife and I adopted our newest family member today and I can't praise the Oregon Humane Society enough! We started the process to adopt on a Friday night and they got extremely busy. After a very long wait we started to get nervous that we would have time to meet the pup before they closed. From the time we got there, EVERY staff member was super friendly and made the wait pleasant. In fact, Chris and Mackee ended up staying late just so we could meet Savannah and even though it was too late to process the adoption that night, they put her on hold for us so we could make sure to pick her up the next day. We were forewarned that Saturday mornings can be busy. Wow! They definitely are....
We decided to get there about 9:30 and glad we did. A line formed up very quickly. However, the crew there was ready to open the doors...a well oiled machine. Greeted everybody quickly and friendly. Not only that but many of them recognized us from the night before and quickly acknowledged us with all smiles. They made it quick and easy to finish the adoption process and Riley made sure we had all of the information we needed to take our puppy home!
I can't tell you how impressed I am with OHS and how much I appreciate their service. After visiting many other local dog rescues, nobody does it as well as OHS and with the same level of customer service!

We bought our cat here. It's a very nice facility with visiting rooms and a large variety of rescued animals. They provide a great service to our community.

I have had bad experiences with rescued animals and would never take that risk again. But if you have the time, patience and are willing to take home a broken pet, go right ahead. Be a hero to some sad animal. I will not be back. That shouldn't deter you from going.

We have adopted three animals through OHS. First one was a kitten who is now 13 years old and has been the best cat EVER! She is still lively and spry. Her foster home helped socialize her well.

Our second was a black lab, who we ended up not keeping because he wanted to eat our cats. OHS told us that they did not know how he would react to the cats, so we took the necessary precautions. We re-homed him with a family that lived on a farm - with no cats.

Our third adoption was recently after our Sheltie passed away. The tiniest little terrier mix chose our son - she is the sweetest little dog I have ever encountered. She is great with our cat, great with our son and little ones she has met from 6 years to 2 months. She is learning to be with the bigger dogs without being afraid. She is crate trained, she is mostly potty trained, has learned to leave it and come to her name - and walks on a loose leash!

OHS gave us as much information as they could on this little girl - I even found her original shelter from Second Chance. They warned us that she could have kennel cough and called us two weeks after our adoption to see how it was going. They completed the paperwork for us for her micro-chip and pet insurance and emailed all of her information! They were helpful and kind. When we left OHS after adopting, they were closing for the evening - and saying good night to all of the small pets, with music and dim lighting for them to sleep. The workers and the volunteers love the animals. It is clear when you see them with the animals and when you see how happy they are when they find a home!

This shelter is an amazing place and the dogs available through the Second Chance program are fantastic if you are looking for a small dog!

I was there two years ago to adopt a dog. Here are some quick highlights of my visit:
- It was very busy!
- The whole process took over 4 hours.
- The meet-and-greet staff member gave us a lot of very helpful advice.
- I adopted a fearful pup who was in a lot of pain from two surgeries (they did not send the pup home with any meds).
- The pup is now very loving and happy.

We arrived about 4 pm on a Saturday in January. The lobby was very full of people with multiple lines for the front desk. I picked one and almost immediately noticed an employee walking down the line, pausing to talk with each group. When she got to us, she said that we needed to have a dog's name before we could be added to the wait list. From an online search, I had the names of two of their dogs that I wanted to meet, but she said both of them had already been claimed. So my family headed to the kennels.

The kennels were very brightly lit and loud with people chattering and dogs barking. There were rows and rows of kennels full of dogs that were ready for adoption. A few young puppies attracted the interest of my family but one sad, little, fluffy, big-eared pup grabbed a hold of me. He was one of the few dogs that wasn't doing everything he could to catch our attention. He seemed overwhelmed by the chaos and he completely captured my heart.

I went back to the lobby to stand in line and when I got to the desk, a cordial employee asked which two dogs I would like to meet. I gave the sad little dog's name and randomly picked another name from the list of dogs that my family had handed to me before they scattered to "go see the cats!" I was informed that there was a two-hour wait to meet the dogs and was given a buzzer.

After two hours the buzzer lit up so we went back to the desk in the lobby and met our meet-and-greet coordinator. She lightly grilled us about our reasons for adopting. Then she led us to a meeting room while she told us a little about the pup we would meet. She left us in the room and then came back with our pup. He was very scared and she had a lot of really good advice (it worked!). We passed her inspection and the pup sailed right into our hearts, so we went back to the lobby to fill out the paperwork.

The final process took another hour: filling out the paperwork, waiting for our data to be entered it into their system, shopping in their store (it has reasonable prices!) and going through the final "this is the current health status of your new pet and all we know about his history" exit interview. So we left the premises about 8:30 pm.

The whole process was very long and tiring. But we ended up with the perfect pet for us.

Saturday was a busy day to go but they were very organized. Prepare to be there most of the day but it's all worth it when you get to bring your fur baby home. Friendly and professional staff. You can tell that they really care about what they do.

We adopted our cat here 20 years ago. She was already a few years old when we adopted her. After a long fantastic life bridging my family joy we took her back when she passed away. Our financial situation at this point was desperate. I have 2 special needs children so out finances bearly make it each month.

They were compassionate and took our furry family member for cremation without charge. I donated $10 as that's all I could spare.

The person at the counter helped me take a few fur clippings for me to tie off into keepsakes.

You guys are wonderful and helped make a very rough situation much easier.

Thank you and much love.

A great "no kill" shelter, with a history of good work helping our loving companions. Stop in just to visit, find an irrefutable new friend that will love you no matter how bad your day at work was, to volunteer, or to make a donation to support the cause. Dedicated people make it work.

They are adopting out dangerous breed of dogs! My girlfriend adopted a pit bull and after one week the dog became aggressive and bit a neighbors daughter requiring stitches. I think that's why insurance companies declare them as a dangerous breed and won't cover policies.

The wife and I are donators here. Each time we visit, the staff are incredibly friendly. Their store full of toys, supplies, treats and souvenirs, while slightly marked up, is a fantastic way for them to earn money. They put the proceeds back into the animals, which is great. Many people look for the words no-kill when looking at shelters. OHS doesn t attempt to blur that line and fool you into thinking that that even exists. They do their very best, though, to make sure that 99.9% of their animals are trained, cared for, and healthy before sending them out to be adopted. The staff put their heart and soul into it, and it shows. The place is kept immaculately clean and the animals are very clearly cared for. They do a lot more than one would think a dog shelter does, too, so take a look at their website. If we were ever to adopt another dog, we wouldn t hesitate but to do it from them.

I filled out an online application to adopt a kitten, but no one ever called me back. I was home and by the phone as they indicated they would only call once. I'm elderly and was really hoping to get a kitten this summer. Hopefully others don't have this negative experience!

We adopted our latest dog companion from OHS. The dog we thought we wanted was already adopted, but the worked with us to find another dog who has become a wonderful member of our home. The facility is well cared for and the staff is friendly. They bring in pets from other parts of the country to help them, through their Second Chance Program. We would certainly adopt from them again.

This is a very hard review to write. The Oregon hu...

This is a very hard review to write. The Oregon humane society is where I found my best friend over 7 years ago when I adopted Lucy my rescue pet cocker spaniel. The Oregon humane society was most kind and inviting and extremely helpful and getting my dog adopted. They were very thorough and vetting me to make sure I would be a faithful and loving owner. Unfortunately on July 31st of this year might be love a dog passed away suddenly. I was terrified and stressed and I couldn't stop crying because I had lost a family member a faithful companion a loving friend and a dog that was there every morning when I woke up getting ready for work. But her time had run out she was old and tired and I knew this day was pending but I didn't know it would be this quick. I didn't know what to do I didn't know who to call. But my beloved wife and a calm tone and manner called the humane society and they not only encouraged me to bring Lucy there, we were told that they would handle the services and everything that was involved during this very difficult time. I never knew that Oregon humane society provided these types of services I always thought like many, that that's where you went to get a stray dog or cat to find a good home for them and to nurture them. The Oregon humane society not only provides cremation services they have a cemetery on location that you can bury your pet if that's what you wish to do. I chose to have Lucy cremated and I wanted her ashes close to me so that I at least knew she was nearby and I didn't want to simply pass her on and only have a memory left. I sure love my dog she was a great companion and the Oregon humane society respectfully kindly and with the greatest amount of respect we're so kind to me and cared for Lucy even after she had passed with such grace and professionalism there are not words that can thank these people enough for the tremendously hard work they have to do everyday.

God bless the Oregon humane society and God bless Mrs Harmon who runs the Oregon humane society and I apologize if I got her name wrong but I've read a lot about her and the scope of her knowledge and experience is the reason the Oregon humane society does such a great job caring for neglected animals and trying to find homes for animals that have lost their way. In honor of my dog I have made a greater attempt to try and support the Oregon humane society both financially and through the community because what they did for me was about a love for animals. I miss my dog everyday but I'm sure glad the Oregon humane society was there to help me from welcoming Lucy into my home helping me get her there but also making it a classy and personal way of saying goodbye to her.

I cant believe that people really think this is a wonderful place, I feel that this organization should be shut down... . I read all the reviews and it doesn't make sense to me because my experience was just horrible . My cat is no loner here. I want to share with everyone my story , so just maybe i can save your animals life before it's to late. My poor cat became sick and i went to several vets and they told me they found a mass and they needed 2000 down or they couldn't help her . and she would die .. I could only come up with 500 at that moment so i called every resource out there to try and get help . and the sad thing is no one could help . i though i was going to have to put her to sleep . i try ed one more place and that was the Portland humane society, i was crying telling them what was wrong with her ,( let me say this they seemed so caring and concerned) The rep said that she would get kiki's medical records faxed over there and the vet will review it , if the vet thinks its curable they would call me back but the only catch was i would have to surrender her to them. Honestly I just didn't want her to die, and I though I could just get her right back. If they did take her. about an hour later the rep called me back telling me that they could fix her and she is going to be just fine . i was so happy i though they were my angels... I drove down there and when i got there again i asked again and was told again that she would be fine . the rep said they don't take animals that are to sick to be cured. so i left her there. I called two hours later and the rep told me she was put to sleep .. No one knows how much i love her , she was the most smartest kindest and precious cat i have ever seen. i was so hurt and felt that they tricked me . the rep said she had a cyst on her tummy and it was putting toxic in her body . They tricked me i though she was going to live . i feel like i let my kitty down ....she was more to me then just a pet she was my baby ...... and i don't have her anymore. they should lie to anyone about a life its not a joking matter ... i am so sorry i took her there ..

I called up OHS after being bit by a dog adopted from here (I wanted to find out about the vaccination protocol to ensure I wasn t at risk for rabies). The team member I spoke with was incredibly helpful, reassuring, and knowledgeable- I really appreciated her time. I ve also called up about making a food donation, the person I spoke with was very helpful too.

I dont ever write reviews. However, my experience with Lori yesterday was absolutely horrible. After meeting a dog and falling in love with her with the lovely help from Maddy, my 4 year old picked out toys and treats to buy for Penelope "who was going to be our new family member". We went in to visit with Penelope again before bringing her home, Lori was "nice" however all of her belittling comments about how I need to get my house under control before adding a dog, and getting frustrated with my excited 4 year old for talking, were completely unnecessary. After being told "I cant deny you taking her home, but I'm going to be brutally honest & tell you that I dont think you should" ect ect. I finally took my crying 4 year old & left in tears without Penelope. What is supposed to be an exciting experience ended up being completely horrible. We have spent the day sad & wishing I had stood up to this lady & the situation more. Let me add, we have animals already, we love them & care for them & Lori had absolutely NO reason to think otherwise. I had planned on going back and getting Penelope after speaking to a supervisor hours later who was the 3rd employee to tell me there was absolutely no reason for this kind of treatment, however it was to late & she had already been adopted. I am so glad she found a home & didnt have to spend another day at a shelter, but so sad for my daughter & the situation as a whole.

Although I did not adopt a cat from OHS at the end, I was considering multiple of their animals. The staff there thoroughly and honestly explained the behavior, symptoms, and reasons why or why I should not get a certain cat. They gave me lots of background information on choosing the correct cat, and I thank them for that.

Upset I adapted a dog about a week and half ago. Took her to get her shots and found out that she had severe ear infection, and debris inside the ear. According to the vet it has been there for a long time. When I adapted her I was told that she had been treated for fleas, well she was not for she has lots and lots of them. My other pets take medication to avoid fleas, can not blame it on her going outside since puppy did not had all her shots she was not taken out of the house. According to paperwork she was checked ears and all, but it did not look like she was checked otherwise she would not had some much gunk in her ears. She is being treated and will heal, just upset that an organization that prides themselves as caring for animals would claim in paper that the puppy was checked when in fact she was not checked.

The negative reviews here hardly have any ground to stand on. The folks here are obviously committed to their animals and want to see them go to good homes. I couldn't be happier with our shelter dog and the kind of support OHS is willing to provide to a responsible dog owner.

These Fools refused to let us adopt a dog because we did not have a fence!!!

We have 12+ acres of fields and forest and ponds. We have owned dogs as long as I can remember with no issues at all

So, apparently they believe that a tiny city apartments with little or no yard at all (but with a fence), is a better option than letting a dog live out its life with tons of room to roam.

These peoples policies are stupid.

- miniscule yard w/ fence. (SURE TAKE THE POOR DOG)

- huge yard, acres to run and explore, and ponds. (NO, WE DO NOT THINK THIS IS GOOD FOR THE DOGS)

So in light of recent events I am very angry with ...

So in light of recent events I am very angry with the Oregon Humane Society, my friend adopted a cat his name was max, the OHS claimed he was a healthy 4 year old cat looking for a new home, was temperamental and liked to be pet on his own terms as well as having issues with vet visits. Upon meeting Max they found him to be very friendly and warmed up to my friend and her husband very quickly, myself included, I was able to play with him, pick him up at my leisure and he had no issues with it. After bringing him home max was very happy at first, picky with his eating and such, nothing out of the ordinary. Max then became sick and was constantly throwing up and did not poop at all in the 2 weeks he was in his new home. Trying to give him soft foods with no luck, and max loosing so much weight my friend took him to the vet, this is where we started to uncover the truth. Max was not 4 he was in fact 8 years old, not only this but several medical issues came into view, the vet that checked him out said found severe dental issues, possible signs cancer and hyperthyroidism. All of which the OHS did not find when the cat first came into there possession. Now it is my understanding that no matter how the animal enters the humane society there are required to FULLY examine the animal for any signs of potential infectious diseases and other severe medical issues. Recognizing part of there mistake the OHS decided to give him more of a work over for free. Once the humane society had him in there possession once again they ran the exact same tests and found the same issues, informed my friend his condition was most likely not curable gave them some food samples, medication and sent them on there way. Realizing what it would take to take care of this poor animal they were forced to give him back and once again max found himself without a home, all because the humane society neglected to examine this animal and decided to look over the fact that he just appeared on there door step one day and didn t seem to question it. After returning Max the humane society asked her what they could have done better and asked her to give a profile on him, this is what she had to say; The reason for rehoming is because I was under the impression Max was a healthy 4 year old only to find out he is closer to 8, but when I brought him home he was puking all over the house and wouldn t eat. He is VERY picky about what food he DID eat tuna and canned chicken. I look him to the first Vet they couldn t seem to find anything wrong with Max. When I took him back to OHS and they treated him for his vomiting and lack of bowel movements he only seemed to get sicker. I also found his T4 levels were elevated meaning he most likely would develope hyperthyroidism. I couldn t keep up with the vomit cleaning, making sure he was eating and not getting sicker, as well as the cost of medication needed in the future if condition were to develop or his vomiting was a sign of a much more serious condition. After all of this the OHS has decided to put him up for adoption AGAIN because he isn t throwing up Max has been back at the shelter for only 2 days. It is hard to determine weather or not he is sick in just 2 days because when he doesn t eat and he doesn t puke, so who knows if he has been eating. This whole situation could have been avoided had they done there job. Now I m not saying Max isn t adoptable or isn t lovable and doesn t deserve a loving home im simply pointing out the fact that the OHS needs to own up to there mistake and make sure this doesn t happen to another family. And to top it off there are now selling max for $15.... This has been such an emotional roller coaster and stressful for the animal and I hope that the humane society can learn from the mistake they clearly made. This also just a warning to people who adopt from the humane society to make sure that the pet your adopting has a clean bill of health so you don t have to go through the same situation my friend did.

These people need a major reform on their practices. My wife was sold a puppy with Distemper...he was with us for 1 week and we had to euthanize him. The dog was not tested on arrival, the staff to no measures to isolate the dogs in any way and did not wear gowns to prevent transfer of disease. There were many small puppies exposed that could not have had vaccines applied in time to prevent infection.
Then when we try to buy a new dog with our "credit" no one can look up info and they were rude to my wife about it. This must stop! You should be at her beck and call not turning your nose to her.
Awful place....please stop buying animals from here any maybe they will close for good.

We cannot thank employees and volunteers from the Oregon Humane Society enough for all the joy they have brought to our home. We have adopted animals through OHS and have been impressed with the customer service, expertise, and guidance from all staff and volunteers. Most recently, Kyle and Chris helped us with our newest addition :) These two are both extremely knowledgeable about cats! Kyle spent time with me talking over the phone and even through email. I felt well supported and grateful for the home we are now creating for our newest little kitten. We love OHS!
