I have mixed feelings about the Oregon Humane Society. I recognize that they are a nonprofit, working under a tight budget and with limited resources. Overall the experience was a positive one. However, two things happened that soured the experience for us. We were told that our dog was spayed two days prior to adopting her. When we took her to the vet, she confirmed that it was an old scar and likely was done at least a month prior. Second, we were told our dog had a lesion on her hind leg, but that it was nothing to be concerned about. When we got her to the vet, she was alarmed to find our dog had an abscessed anal gland and was in significant pain. Two rounds of antibiotics, pain pills, and a lot of money later, she is finally on the mend. I m frustrated that the humane society didn t treat this condition and allowed our dog to be adopted out in such a state.

OHS is a great place to visit and see the wonderful things they do. They offer group volunteering which is how I'm familiar with them - they are incredibly helpful and we love working with them

Came here on Sunday the day before the website said they were supposed to go appointment only, and was stopped by a rude employee who asked us if we had any plans to adopt. We said yes, and he said we couldn t go anyway without an appointment even though the website said that started the day after which is specifically why we chose to go that day. Drove there for nothing. Unprofessional and rude animal shelter.

We adopted a dog on 12/14/2018. The operation here is quite efficient and the staff seems genuinely interested in helping make a good pet-adopter match.

You can learn information about the various adoptable pets on their website, or you can just go in.

When you arrive, you can go and see the animals... and select up to 2 to meet and play with. You meet them 1 at a time, and after you meet those 2, you can select 2 more.

A staff member brings you to a small play room... brings in the pets one at a time and let's you interact and play with the pet. The staff is very knowledgeable and gives a good rundown on what is known about the pet and how he/she did on various tests (medical, interacting with other animals, etc).

Oregon Humane Society also offers a pet behavior helpline... a free service to all pet owners in Oregon (whether you adopted the pet or got it from another source).

Caring wonderful people will help you find the perfect pet for you. Many volunteers walk, feed, and groom the animals that come to their facility which is kept clean with no bad smells. I am proud of our Oregon Humane Society and all that they do, and do so well.

Rude and nosy staff. We wanted to visit with an animal and we couldn't even do that without committing to adoption because "it's too much stress" on the animal. Like that's a load of crap. The animal would love the attention and be relieved to be out of its damn cage. They just want ur $$ they don't care about animals.

They get very busy very fast during peek hours, so plan to wait if you try to go on weekends or evenings. If you can, try and make it out during the weekday and the experience will be a ton nicer.

The process is also a bit confusing to first comers. No need to wait in line first, just go look at the animals right away and remember who you want to see. Then get in line to let the staff know who you'd like to meet with.

Past how busy it can get, the adoption process is really easy. The staff is really nice, but since most are volunteers they aren't going to know every answer. Do as much research beforehand and be prepared for staff to defer to what's in the pets file.

The best part is you know the animals are being treated right. Just that is worth the extra time.

Great place, adopted our dog from here. He had developed kennel cough/pneumonia before adoption and they walked us through his medication regimen. He's great now and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. #adoptdontshop

I love this place! I love how all the creatures here look healthy and staff are very friendly!

I got my two fuzzy kitties here through a family that was fostering them for the OHS. I would recommend going here for pet gear or to get a pet.

I will include a few pics of my 2 kitties in my review.

Wait times can be lengthy, due to the amount of potential adopters waiting to see specific animals, but everything is handled well, and moves smoothly. We adopted a blind pit bull from there the other day, and he is awesome! They made sure they went over all the risks and made sure we knew what we were up against, instead of telling us what we wanted to hear to get him out the door. Great people doing a great job :) This is also a NO KILL SHELTER!! Find your new best friend there today!!

The organization was really impressive. All the cats I saw looked healthy and well fed. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Would recommend going my car, by public transit was difficult to say the least (4 lanes of traffic where the closest light is a mile in each direction without a sidewalk on either side)

Ashamed to (a bad man neighbor ) stole our cats about 8 times since May 2016.
Thanks to SW Humane in Vancouver, They always posts found dogs and cats photos on craigslist and others websites everyday. That is how I always check with humane, about 6 times I saw our cats at humane so They came back home with me. Awful when They look sad that broke heart. Recently one month ago it was too late while I was busy in kitchen during my filming on 2 men (neighbors) success to kill our kitty and dump him on road on March 19, 2018. Obviously, they were upset that I take cats back home ! I wish to save our kitty. Too late to save my kitty. Sad that Crime labs are very expensive.. I know that you would not want to believe me, True we saw them doing deny many times. and not grow up yet.

Some people Hates cat or dog because they hates living and themselves that is why they blame Us and God ? They have no right to rid of owner s pet to dump or death, abused, etc. Because they selfish, barely understand, no respect God and to people. I believe They hates in themselves, they forgot about their age were excited, cute, sneak and flirting. As puppy and kitty were not lost their life (that not fair )

Please pray for a miracle from Our Christ in Heaven somehow. belong to God, God created pets for some reason to be loved toward to us from God.. I am deaf person very lonely, only my eyes to see world and bored if no pet around..

Nicest facilities I have ever seen, but they are very busy. There were a couple of dogs we were interested in, but people had placed holds over the phone before even meeting them. My advice would be to get there first thing when they open to try and avoid that.

Honestly if your looking for a puppy, The night before go look on their page....(After they close) then be there in the parking lot when they open the next day. That way you can guarantee that you at least get to see the dog your looking for. We lucked out the pup we got is amazing.

This is not like it was when I was a kid . Always euthanizing animals after they were there for a certain length of time. They have a operating room and training room where they teach owners and their pets obedience classes as well as others training.

I had an awesome time. The wait was a little long but understandable because of all the people there looking for the new family member. I enjoyed meeting two kittens and was able to take home Wade. The process with the paper work went quickly which was awesome. It's also great that they have a store there because I was able to pick up the essentials right away without having to make another stop.

Such a nice place for such a difficult purpose. We adopted a dog and they made the process quick and painless. We went back a few years later and did some training too. The woman who helped us with our CGC test was very experienced and passionate about her work.
The facility is bright, clean and cheery. The people are helpful and friendly. I can't commend them enough.

We had a wonderful Chihuahua that was a great pet. However, when we had a baby, she became very vicious and would nip and try to bite our daughter out of jealousy. We tried several things with no avail. So, with great sorrow, we brought her to the shelter to be adopted out to an appropriate owner. The female staff we dealt with made us feel incredibly guilty, shamed us for surrendering the animal and made the adoption a very painful procedure. She also said the dog would likely be put down. We stated if the dog wasn't adopted we would take her back and find a loving owner ourselves.
Luckily, she was adopted by an elderly couple 3 days later. Shame on your staff for creating such unnecessary stress when our decision was so difficult to begin with.

TO ALL POTENTIAL ADOPTERS..IF YOU SEE AN ANIMAL YOU WANT FROM THEIR WEBSITE, AND YOU GO TO THE SHELTER... DO NOT GO LOOK AND SEE IF THE DOG OR CAT IS THERE. MOST LIKELY THEY ARE IN A CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC AREA AND ARE STILL ADOPTABLE. YOU MUST ONLY GO STAND IN LINE AT THE COUNTER AND ASK IF THEY ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

My wife and I found this out after seeing more than a dozen dogs we wanted over a 6 month period, but when we never seen those dogs in the shelter, we just gave up, went elsewhere and adopted two awesome cats.

It sucks to stand in line just to find out, but make sure you have at least 3 choices before you arrive. Until OHS gets thier act together, this will be as long as buying a new car. 2-4 hours.

Been here to OHS multiple times AND like other reviews we also had a bad experience. long wait times, 1.5 hr wait for a 2 min visit. As the dog we were looking at got comfortable and headed towards us the dog was pulled out and put away. Very rude people, overlooked. The dog we looked at has been there for two years and my family and i thought we could give her a good home, guess I'm not a professional. I recommend going over the river to sw Washington humane society, different ownership. Everybody is polite and helpful

A great place to get a pet. Do not expect your trip to OHS to be quick - especially on a Saturday. Lots of people coming to "just look" combined with those looking to take home a pet make it chaotic. They require your exit interview to be with paid staff and they are understaffed so leaving can take a while. Also, don't expect your pet to be perfect.. both kitties we adopted had residual ear mite problems and need further deworming. I suggest asking for copies of their vet records while you are there before you leave.. it was difficult for our vet to get in touch with OHS to get records for their follow up check up. We had a list of preferred cats that we made but when we got there they were either already adopted or unsuitable for us and the volunteer helped us get 2 kitties we couldn't be happier with. :)

I had a great experience here! I came on a busy Saturday to look at a mini poodle I had seen posted online. We waited several hours due to how busy it was, but we were able to walk around and look at all the animals so it was still fun. Eventually I got to meet with the dog I wanted. I got to bring him home the next day. The day after I adopted him he had an infection on where he was neutered due to licking it and they saw him and gave him antibiotics for free. He ended up being very playful and sweet. He s also very cuddly and loves to nap all day. He has been such a wonderful addition to the family. I do believe they have certain precautions in place for a reason and that they would never let an animal go to a family that s isn t a good fit, which is why some people end up not being aloud to adopt certain pets. I definitely recommend going to a shelter opposed to a breeder. You get to help save pets who came from bad situations and give them a new life. The dog I got came from their second chance program which is dogs shipped in from kill shelters in California. I love how much effort they put into giving as many animals as they can a better life.

I wanted a gentle, sweet companion. A dog on their website looked perfect: gentle, housebroken, loving to everyone, and all around a perfect fit for me. I brought her home, and she immediately turn into a devil. She pees on everything constantly, rips up my stuff, and is very unfriendly (she BITES). Super disappointed, because while I love her, she s wreaking havoc. i ve had her almost a month, and it s clearly not just miss behaving because of an adjustment because she s in a new home. The Humane Society will clearly advertise their dogs in a positive light just to get rid of them. Incredibly frustrating that they arent honest about the dogs that they are fostering.

An absolutely fantastic place to find yourself a new family member pet. It's clean, spacious, family friendly and fun. It felt welcoming to be there. I didn't feel like any of my questions were redundant for the staff or foolish. The animals looked very well cared for and it made it a lot easier to search for our new friend. The parking was easy and it was wheelchair-friendly. If you're looking for a dog, a cat, a mouse, a guinea pig, a bunny a cat or even a reptile maybe, I definitely recommend the Humane Society being a part of your search.

Being from Florida, our expectations were pretty low on the conditions when it comes to the humane society. We were amazed at the beautiful building, the great condition of the kennels, the number of great people there truly caring for the animals, and the extent they went to make certain we were there right people for the animals we were there to see. A great experience.
