I sent a letter to OPM to change my retirement election and hadn't heard from them in a little over a month. I called the number and got right through after making selections on the phone. I was helped right away and found out that my request was being processed.
Horrible! Don't call this endless pit, you won't get a human.
Have been waiting 11 months for payments to begin!!! Was told over a month ago it was only waiting for a CSA number. Payments were scheduled to begin August 1st and still nothing. They already had every bit of information needed on file. This is absurd. If this were privatized it'd be done in 2-3 days max! This is 2020, every bit of information should already be stored electronically in a personal file to expedite this process.
This may help someone.... When I have called OPM the line is always busy so I continued to press the redial button after I get a busy signal until I get through... Once I get through I still have to wait sometimes as long as 40 minutes but once I get a represenitive they are very helpful with answering my questions and giving me further directions if needed. I think the worse time to call is near closing....
The line rings....the recording says if you know your parties extension you can dial at any time..twice and then it hangs up on you!

Been holding over 27 mins. and will until they CLOSE: 5:00 p.m. One call from OPM worker; then an email; nothing else. Wow! People have a right to their retirement funds, but will never get them at this rate. Been trying to get them since 1/18/2018. Today's date 2/23/2018. Will NOT interface with me. Okay, 1st issue was my fault, but failure to communicate ANYTHING???? Really? In 2018? Yep, they are on BLAST.

Retirement Operations Center phone line is always busy and impossible to connect. never was able to even get to an automated service. you would hope Federal Government would value people better than this. Extremely poor service, very unhappy
Waste your time trying to talk to anyone. It disconnects you after you waste time listening to the recording.
I have been trying to call for 5 weeks during office hours. It is ALWAYS busy. The moment the office is closed, you get a voicemail. Unable to leave a message.
Worst experience I have ever had trying to contact a government agency. 16 calls and always says it s busy try again later. Whoever runs this operation should be replaced.

OPM is a joke. Lost my CSA # and it is impossible to get a new one because OPM doesn't accept any identification as identification. Don't even try to call. They have a phone number so they can not use it. Ridiculous rampant ineptitude comes standard. Office of People are Meaningless. Service to this great nation equals neglectful service to you
Looking at some of the comments here - I'm surprised. I've always gotten through, though sometimes I'd have to try several times due to busy signals. Then, at times, I've had some long holds, but that's to be expected. Once connected, I've found any agent I've spoken with to be courteous & helpful.
For those who complain that "it's ALWAYs BUSY" or that hold times are too long - call your conressman/woman and US Senators. If the number is so busy it's because they're under-staffed because they're under-budgeted. Legislation such as the "Tax Cuts & Jobs Act" may cut taxes for billionaires, leaving offices like this short of what they need to function properly.

So happily amazed at how lucky I've been: called 2x and both times have talked to very nice staff who have helped answer my questions. Would be cool to go up one day and take a tour.

I had an awful time trying to get some of the government paid workers to respond to my request to change bank for my direct deposits. I finally asked m y sernator to get this done. Even then it took a very long time for the lazies to get up and make the change.
This is ridiculous.
I have been trying for several weeks to contact at phone # provided....always get a busy signal. I attempted twice to email at email address provide.....twice receiving error messasge not a valid address failed to send. This is unacceptable!

We were over-insured. I wanted to suspend FEHBP. Much to my surprise, I got right through and talked to Becky. She sent the form which I completed and returned. Sadly, I didn t follow instructions and forgot my identification info so I will call back and try to fax or email the document. Have a great day!
This doesn't even deserve a one star. They cut off my mom's medical insurance off after my dad died. They did not give any prior notice or anything. How can they do this? This would be illegal in the private sector. I sent forms in to try to get it reinstated. They told me it can take the mailroom 3 weeks to deliver the mail to the right Department. They are totally incompetent there!
Tried for MONTHS waiting to get my wife health insurance and then when she does get it they charge me for all those months we didn't have coverage !! No one answers our calls or returns calls then they shut my retirement off !! And the woman says when I asked how can you do this ? She says we are the federal government we can do whatever we want to and hung up !! Last I heard from ANYONE in OPM !! And I haven't been paid in two months now !!!
Been calling for 3 days no answer.Once someone picked up but after saying hello they hung up.I know the number is good but there just not answering.
send new information on behalf of my husband and I got the same old correspondence we sent back about 7 years ago in response as if it was new....Government!!!!
Their toll-free # has been busy contin uously on Fri. Jan. 9th, Mon. Jan. 12th & Tues. Jan. 13th !? WtH !? Let callers get in the queue & be on hold if they're will'N to wait to get thru to an OPM ret. representative, instead of get'N a busy signal !?
I was connected on the 2nd ring to an informative automated system that allowed me to connect quickly with Tammy today, Feb 6, 2019. She was professional and helpful. She followed up completely for me and told me next steps. I was impressed with the service and told her so!
unbelievable phone gets a busy signal call this other number and if you dont have a ext number they still hang up on you really
I'm writing this review as a way to spend my time while I wait... OPM is MOST frustrating to try to reach. Tried the online services website, but my password no longer works. It used to work, and I wrote it down, so who knows? Requested a password reset online, but never got an email. Tried to call the 888 number, waited one hour, never got anyone to do a password reset. I'm now sitting (and sitting) for many minutes, listening to elevator music, trying to change my withholding using a phone rep. If this was a business, they would soon be out of business.
On hold for 30 minutes. Person i finally talked to was rude and dismissive and provided no help at all.
I called the OPM retirement number and was on hold for 1 hour 51 minutes. No answer just recording over and over. Finally I hung up.
I called early Friday morning to get a copy of my deceased mother's 1099 so that I could have my parents taxes done. I was told that it would be faxed that day - or, at the least, by the following Monday. Today is Tuesday - the day of my appt with the accountant - and still no fax.....
Very incompetent when they do finally answer the phone. Standard answer we are reviewing. Well been 7 months. I will die before they do anything.

Always getting a "line busy" message, not even able to be put on hold, the call just drops automatically. Need a better system for people to get through and have their problems resolved.

Yes, they are slow for sure. OPM states send in paperwork (RI 92-19, etc) two months prior. Send it in SIX months prior would be my best advice. I actually used boombox5000 xxx's advice and it worked! Longest call thus far was 17 minutes, total. Adios.
Ten months so far trying to get court ordered pension money. House is in forclosure and nobody in Boyers Pa or washington DC. Actually cares. Please hire some government workers And of course, calls dont get answered. If the call actually goes thru

This should not be. At the very least a computer should answer and ask for a call-back number. And someone should actually call you back in the order received in the next day or 2.
In the time it has taken them to service my request, I have lost my home, my phone service, and now my car is dying. I am now having to stay with my bestie of 21 years (my child's Godparents) and it is now effecting that as well. Get the lead out! People's lives are depending on you doing your jobs

I contacted them and on the first try they were very helpful and efficient. If you have the right number, it seems that things work well. No problems and they answered all of my questions.
