We visit this restaurant at least once a year when we stay in Kings Beach. The food is very good but this time our waiter wasn't very good. He seemed a bit smug. When he picked up my dish after finishing eating a piece of chicken fell off my plate and landed in my lap. He did not offer anything for his mishap, perhaps a free dessert or discount should have been offered. I was surprised that he didn't seem contrite for his sloppiness!

Ambiance of a steakhouse from the 60s/70s here. Interesting lighting fixtures and decor. Comfortable booths. But you really want to know about the food. All the main meat dishes come with spectacular garlic mashed potatoes-and these are some of the smoothest mashed potatoes I've had in the US. I ordered the Petit Filet special with cocktail shrimp and a Caesar salad. Everything was delicious. The filet was cooked perfectly (I ordered medium rare) and was very tender. It is served with a rich mushroom reduction that is a great flavor addition. I highly recommend this place and would probably order the same thing again because it's so delicious.

Prices here are somewhat high but the food is yummy and portion sizes are huge! I've been here a couple times before and continue coming back here for the food and great service! The appetizers are also delicious!

This was our favorite steak restaurant in the area. We have a cabin in Tahoe Donner and would take all our friends to the Old Range Steak House, But never again. I like a good medium rare rib eye steak. This is my steak of choice and we raise Angus cattle so I am a beef lover.
I brought my Mom and Dad with us to enjoy a good steak dinner.
The waiters all new us by name. My steak came out very over cooked so I asked the waiter who agreed it was over done for a new steak cooked to medium rare.
The waiter apologized as he brought out my original steak all cut up and put it in front of me. He said the chef ( the owner ) said it was cooked fine and I was to eat it. The waiter said the chef would not replace the steak.
Please note this was quite some time ago but we have never gone back nor would we.
What is this guy the steak Nazi from the Jerry Seinfeld show?
I said you eat it!

My friends and I make an anual trip to this place every year. The rules are it has to follow an "epic" day of skiing. Relevant only because we only ever go when we are *starving*. But, this place never fails to deliver. They have a decent wine selection, and the portions are generally huge. The staff always takes good care of us. The only real downside are some of the cutbacks forced on them by the economy -- their menu lacks many of the side dishes it use to contain, and the downsized their porterhouse a few years back because people couldn't believe a single steak could cost that much. (but it was so amazingly large -- and delicious --... it really did) Regardless, the bottom line is, this place is a fun place to unwind after a solid day on the slopes. You won't leave hungry!

I have to admit the wife and I are foodies (food snobs?) The restaurant was within walking distance to our lodging and sounded interesting. It's off-season (after Labor Day) and during COVID. My wife ordered the Cowboy cut prime rib medium rare and I ordered the Ribeye rare/medium. I have to admit were getting on in years but the lighting made it hard to read the menu and enjoy our meal. The serving size was generous, I don't think my wife ate 1/2 of her prime rib, she enjoyed her meal. Both meals came with garlic mashed potatoes (warning they are not 'smooth' there's chunks - I'm ok with that, some people may not be) we added the broccolini which was good and enough for two. My Ribeye was cooked perfectly, rare/med-rare but no seasoning seemed to be used - great for the purists but I would have preferred seasoning 'Peppercorn encrusted' is my favorite - throw in some rosemary?? There was no salt and pepper on the table (COVID)? We were celebrating - so we split a brownie Sunday (very good) and I had a port (they offered two!) I would go back but I would request seasoning on my meat!

My wife and I are new residents to the Tahoe area and recently decided to try the Old Range and see if it was worth our repeated business.

Just after entrance, we noticed that shared plates came with a charge of $6, of which I thought was just a tad excessive. Questioning this, the [owner?] responded: "We make plenty of money at this restaurant want to make as much as possible from each table."

I myself am a businessman and can understand wishing to boost margins, however between this man's word choices and harsh voice tone, I was very very disappointed. A establishment wit service like this deserves to go under.

We were pleased to promptly leave.

I admire this place! They offer splendid meals, their menu is rich, The chief cook in that restaurant is well trained, I like a lot tasting all their dishes. The food is always of high class, the service towards the visitors is good. I visit often this place and I was never discontended. I recommend it to all my friends.

We were in Lake Tahoe for Christmas and we found this restaurant on Google. The reviews were amazing and we were very excited to go and try out a new place. We arrived at approximately 6:00pm on a Wednesday night. When we walked in a server instructed us to see the hostess. There was no one waiting in front of us and there were visible open tables as well as bar seats. An elderly man approached us and asked us if he had a reservation. We did not and he informed us that the is absolutely no way we can get in without a reservation. He was extremely rude and discourtiouse. He never offered to make us a reservation in the future or offer us take out. We were flabbergasted at his shortness and impolite demeanor. We went to the parking lot and called the restaurant. The person who answered was very polite and informed us that there were reservations available that night. We will never be returning. It is a real shame.

Very strange experience.

Very strange experience.
We had reservations for 6:30 and were seated on time. Our waitress Jennifer was very warm and friendly.
Great service. Great food. It was after dinner when we went to the bar to finnish the wine that things took a strange twist.
There were two seats open. We sat and were very rudely informed they were reserved. What????
There was no sign to indicating the bar being reserved. And it appears to be well...a bar..
The host who originally sat us at our table rudely informed us that bar seats were only for dinner on a first come basis. I only wanted to finish my glass of wine. Feeling very unwelcomed my husband left.
Then Jennifer came to the rescue.
Thank goodness for Jennifer.
She saved the night by being professional and making sure I was taken care of.
I could not recommend this restaurant for the rude and unprofessional treatment.
All I can say is thank you Jennifer for saving the night

OMG! This place was amazing! We didn't have reservations but the guy accomodated us and seated us at the bar. I ordered the slow roasted cowgirl prime rib which was excellently done and a rib eye steak for the husband which he also liked. We're very picky with our steak but this place really was great and did not dissapoint us at all. Will surely be back this summer.

First thing to note, this is not a high class restaurant, but their prices are. Nice food, particularly the vegetable Brussel sprouts ($9), small steak was good ($32). You get a small dollop of mash potatoes for free (maybe this restaurant is a charity after all, or they're Irish). Beer was nice, served in an iced glass. They tellingly don't provide a beer menu, but give you a verbal beer list, so you can't see the prices. However, the iced glass was a pint and they don't serve draught beer, to fill the glass requires ordering 2 small bottles of beer and 1 bottle costs $5.50, so 1 pint costs $11. I've travelled all over the world, even Paris doesn't charge $11 for a pint of beer. If you want to get ripped off, come here. Final bill was over $100, for one person, I had one small steak, a bowl of Brussel sprouts (a cheap vegetable) and 3 pints of beer.

A local's favorite in the tiny town of Tahoe Vista, great selection of meats from steak to ribs, lamb shank to seafood (snow crabs!) It does get very busy so try to make a reservation or show up early (6pm), the happy hour deals are sadly, not great. Food is always fresh and delicious, so it is worth the wait!

This has got to be one of the best places to eat. The prime rib just melts in your mouth. Cocktails were made perfect, had a dirty martini. Very big wine selection with a decent price range. The service is very good and the staff is friendly. It can be a bit pricey but all worth it.

Went there to celebrate a birthday. Six in our party. Wedge salad was. excellent, unfortunately 3 of us ordered prime rib which was ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. Waitress insisted they were medium rare. She suggested we switch to rib eyes which we did. Rib eyes arrived raw. and had no flavor. . Perhaps they have a new cook??? No explanation was offered so I don t know. Out of 6 people only 1 could eat their meal. Mashed potatoes were great.

We found the ribs very fatty and lacking in much meat, but worse, the waitress was incredibly rude and clearly just wanted us to leave. I would not recommend paying their prices for such bad customer care.

We went to this restaurant just last week, 6/11/17 I believe it was. The restaurant has been around for a long time and the ambience is very "old Tahoe" and cozy. Plenty of parking. The staff were great. Very friendly and hospitable. Our server was great and very experienced. The only reason I'm deducting stars is the food. I got a petit fillet with two crab legs and my girlfriend got the gnocchi. The steak was good, however, and I really hate to be rude, but the brown mushroom sauce was not very good. I'm honestly not totally convinced that it did not come from a packet mixture. The crab's legs were good not great, I can make them better myself at home, which is not what you want when you spend $49 on an entree. I cook a lot myself, so I do have high standards, but $49 is $49. The gnocchi too was only "ok." It was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to greasy and oily and the gnocchi's themselves were clearly not made in house. All in all, great atmosphere, great building, plenty of parking, attentive friendly staff, mediocre food. If I had paid 40% less I would have been completely satisfied. I'll go back some day.

I've been going to this restaurant for over 12 years. But tonight I was not disappointed with the food or service but to the response from the owner of the "old range" when I reported a dog I felt was in distress in a vehicle (black Suburban) in his parking lot. Although it is the responsibility of the dog owner to make sure his dog is ok, the restaurant owner told me he had too much on his mind to check with his patrons. As a 64 year old retiree from El Dorado Hills I was stunned at how quickly I was "blown off". I won't be going back.

Great food and cool atmosphere. Excellent staff who handled the craziness with Covid19 with great care and service. Great views of the lake. Wife had the salmon and couldn't stop talking about it the rest of the trip. I had the NY and asked if they could ship it monthly to me in Chicago (a place that know something about a good steak). Skip the hotel restaurants and go to the Old Range, it's a must stop on any Tahoe trip!

Great food - BUT waitress neglected to mention that we were in time for the "early bird" special when I placed my order that happened to be part of that special. Had I not overheard a neighboring table talking about the special I'd not have received the salad & shrimp cocktail that was part of the special! POOR customer service in that regard.

First trip to this side of Tahoe. Our server was great. My prime rib was cooked to perfection. The salad portion served all 3 of us. The bread is baked and deliveried daily and it's the bomb. The ribs melt in your mouth and did not disappoint. My adult beverage was made just right- Our glass was never empty and the server very attentive. The restuarant is quaint and no frills but the food was absolutely worth it's price for sure. There is no child's menu but our server made sure our daughter enjoyed her meal. Will come back again. Has a great view of the lake. Try it out.
