0 STARS. ( - ) NEGATIVE STARS.
The absolute, utmost, WORST, I repeat, WORST birth center I so unfortunately was subjected to. I had my 3rd child in January 2017. First let me say Tricare is terrible towards anyone within a 30 mile radius from the hospital because unless your baby is falling out, you HAVE to deliver at Portsmouth. Rooms full? Tough luck, go anyway.
I arrived at 1am at the birth center with contractions 2 mins apart. Was handed paperwork. Yes the other 2 hospitals I delivered made sure you took care of paperwork prior to your due date but again Portsmouth could care LESS. So paperwork done, sat there for 10 mins. I was led to an exam room, the nurse was very cold, said little if anything other than to instruct me to sit down. Thankfully this was not my first child and that I had company because at this point it was very clear this was what I was to expect the entire way. Any respectable hospital treats expected mothers with support and care but forget about it with Portsmouth. If I could turn the hands back, I would absolutely have chose a home birth rather than be uncomfortable and disrespected like I was at Portsmouth. Getting back to it, I asked for a pillow to put between my legs, they had not ONE. I asked for a blanket instead, they had one lol I asked for water, they brought me a pitcher and they had no cups. The rooms were full so I sat there and begged for an epidural for an HOUR. The rooms are full we can't give you an epidural. At his point, I'm furious that quote "Navy Medical Center Portsmouth prides itself on delivering 300 babies each months" yet they can't manage a full house? Understaffed, underresourced. I believe there were only 2 or 3 doctors for the entire birth center that was full. Finally got into the room, got the epidural, had my baby. Everything finally seemed comfortable. We were going to the maternal ward and we were going to have to room with another mom. Place a healthy mom and healthy baby with another mom and baby for 24 hours before you can be let go. Again thank you Portsmouth for not caring about your patients comfort. Both myself and the baby were healthy. We were told I could not leave until the next day. What do you do with home births? If you are unable to properly provide care, you are maxed out with space and under staffed you take the common sense approach and let the EXPERIENCED mothers and babies with no complications go home. Again third baby. Call for pain medicine? Wait awhile. Oh and the best part? You are FORCED to attend a seminar for 45mins to 1 hour to watch shaking baby videos, abuse, etc. Again FORCED. I was told you will not be discharged until you attend the seminar. I refused I'm pretty sure that is unlawful for one. I was told I had to at least watch a 30 minute video on people describing how they shook their babies and the complications resulting from. I watched for 2 mins and that's it. This was my 3rd child. I am not going to sit there and watch horrific accounts of child abuse. I to this day am beside myself with my birth experience. My first two children had the textbook birth experience. Friendly staff, Standard hospital care, very plain and simple. Portsmouth is not a pleasant place to experience childbirth. Heed my words expectant mothers. If I could go back, home birth or switch to Tricare standard and deliver at your local hospital. This is not some page from a fiction novel, the birth center really is an unpleasant place.
