VERY DISSATISFIED!!!! FEEL DESERVES "NO" STARS
On Nov 2, 2018, my 3-yr-old cat, Max, was in obvious distress. My son and his girlfriend took him to our local veterinarian who told us the matter was serious and to take him to Metropolitan Veterinary Associates at 2626 Van Buren Avenue, Norristown Pa 19403. Metropolitan told them they believed Max had a bladder blockage. They required a $1,000.00 down payment on my cc and explained an addt'l $750 to $1000 would be needed at a minimum.
That evening I spoke on the phone with Dr. McGough. She explained they had catharized Max and were successful in clearing the blockage. A blood draw showed him to be dehydrated and his kidney function was not normal. She said they were giving him IV fluids and planned on leaving the catheter in until Sun AM, November 4th. She said they had a urine sample from the cath and they were sending it out to the lab to determine what caused the blockage. She said most often there were crystals in the urine but there were other possibilities. She said we could visit him on Saturday. She stated she was off for the weekend. I called Saturday morning for a status update and asked what time we could visit. The nurse said we couldn t visit him because he had a catheter and he might pull it out if he got excited. I said the doctor said we could visit him and the nurse said the doctor must have forgotten . (That is FORGOT excuse #1!) . Over the course of the next roughly 36 hours I spoke with two additional nurses and none would allow us to visit him. The doctor I spoke with Sunday AM said they absolutely would not have stopped us from visiting ..yet another conflicting issue.
Finally, Sunday night we were able to pick up our Max. We were told that he was being discharged with three medications and a prescription for special food. Thankfully, I checked the bag before we left and found we were only given two prescription medications and no prescription for his food (That is FORGOT excuse #2!). The urinalysis, as was previously stated, was to determine THE KEY behind this entire incident. By the way, we were told the blockage would definitely happen again .it could be 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year or 10 years .but it would definitely happen again! Based on those frightening statistics, we anxiously awaited the results from the urinalysis. Following is an excerpt from the Royal Canin urinary diet food site explaining the purpose of their food .
Struvite Dissolution - our diets effectively dissolve pure struvite uroliths. (CRYSTALS)
Low Relative Super Saturation (RSS)technology predicts the crystallization potential of urine and is used to develop our diets to decrease the risk of struvite and calcium oxalate crystal and stone formation.
Urine Dilution - our formulas increase the urine volume to simultaneously reduce the saturation of urine with struvite and calcium oxalate precursors.
On Monday evening, Nov 5th, we received a call from Metropolitan to check up on Max. I asked for the results of the urinalysis and TO MY UTTER DISBELIEF, I WAS TOLD THEY DETERMINED THEY HAD F O R G O T T E N (#3) TO SEND OUT HIS URINE SAMPLE .but I shouldn t be upset because they didn t charge me for the urinalysis. Keep in mind, however, they never FORGOT to charge my card for what turned out to be nearly $2,000 for two nights. The aftermath is we are left with uncertainty about what caused this entire incident. Our local vet, who was shocked by the treatment we received, was able to get a urine sample on November 15 and there were absolutely no crystals found. His bladder has some inflammation and online research indicated it could have been a mucus plug and our local vet indicated that is definitely possible but EVEN THOUGH I PAID FULL PRICE FOR METROPOLITAN S SERVICES, I HAVE BEEN LEFT WITHOUT A DEFINITIVE REASON. I feel Metropolitan did a very poor job with my cat and I am incredibly dissatisfied with the outcome of their performance!
