It is a pretty old zoo. The murals are quite cool though. The staff there are also quite friendly. Would recommend if you are in Melbourne and want to have a chill day with your family.

Awesome exhibits, food is questionable & over priced though.
This place is beautiful been here on my school holidays back in 2016 really nice place.
Always good fun! Melbourne Zoo has moved well into the Conservation space, making a visit both an entertaining and a learning experience.
It's recommended to go there on weekends and Victorian holidays
Animals in captivity!?! Your better than that my aussie friends!
You can see many animals there. If you have free time, spend it in the Zoo, not in front of the TV. Don't be a couch potato, explore the world around you.
This Zoo is so big, that you'll need hours to pay attention to every single animal.
In my opinion, you can make a list of the animals that you're interested in.
It is a good opportunity to hear the stories of the keepers, too. Go to the Zoo and have fun!
Animals seem well looked after, the grounds are clean and tidy. Entry price per adult is a bit expensive as is the food.
Nice to get back to the zoo after lockdown but disappointed that a number of exhibits are still closed.
I paid 37 dollars to watch animals that weren t in there enclosures or were not visible to the public plus over the years the animals have decreased that are on display this is just a big money grab I recommend nobody to come here and to go else where because you won t see most the animals or they asleep looking like they are drugged I understand it s about conservation and making the animals feel like they in the wild but we paying to see these animals otherwise put your prices down if your not going to let us get our moneys worth
We liked the Zoo, however, the Otters and penguins were nowhere to be found and there was no information pre-warning us of this. In addition, the kids food pack comprising of an apple, pop-top, cheese sandwich, and cookie was off with the apple going brown and the sandwich stale.
Great display of animals, quite a few of the enclosures were empty though; would have been helpful to put up signs marking closed enclosures so people weren't left playing hide and seek...
Food was very pricey... $6 for a hotdog, $6.50 for a small bowl of chips (not fresh - had several bowls already done and waiting), $9 for a half empty wrap, $9 for sandwiches... Lots of green area so if you can bring your own food and picnic instead!
Staff start closing enclosures at 4.20pm so the park really starts to close at 4.30pm rather than the advertised 5pm.
Parking is cheap at $2 for 5 hours...that is if you can get a spot!
Enjoy our family day. It was easy access around for family with prams. Friendly staff. Big car park and $2 for parking only for 5 hrs.
One down side is the marine area. Needs to be updated. Inside viewing areas was quite boring and seal platform was old and dirty.
isited the zoo for the first time in over 20 years and was very impressed. While the variety of animals may not be as large as some of the other zoos around the world, the quality of the enclosures is definitely world class. Of particular note were the lemur enclosure and the butterfly house where you can get right next to the animals.
There is a good number of anamals and the enclours appear to be well maintained.
If your up for a challenge try to find all the tigers, lions and lepods. They are dam good hiders
Food is not cheap and the quality is not great. The best food court is the one near the main entrance. It stocks all the food the other small restaurants stock
If you would go to the zoo three or four times in a year get a membership
Melbourne zoo is an excellent fun place for a family day out. It has a huge parking which allows you to park next to zoo at a walking distance.
Zoo is full of animals, birds, butterflies and other reptiles. Kids will never get bored however this zoo is so big that it makes kids tired though.
This zoo has very well maintained gardens in which you can sit, eat food and have a small picnic while kids enjoy the zoo and animals.
Staff is very helpful and also you don't waste a lot of time in the queue as there are lots of booths which keep the traffic moving. Enjoy while you are here.

Had an amazing day..
Kids and adults will enjoy this place.
Animals galore.
Enjoyed it. You can easily spend 4-5 hours here. Plenty of animals , birds and reptiles. Carrying own food is recommended if having special dieatry requirements. Glasses were not very clean for taking pictures.
Very nice collection of animals. Plenty of room for walking. Beautiful views
Great place to spend a day with the kids. The animals look well cared for and the gardens are beautiful.
Have to go back early didnt get enough time to to see everything
LOVE the Melbourne zoo!!! Amazing place + many animals + many activities! You feel very involved! Well worth the money for an annual pass!
So glad to be able to visit the zoo again. Had a really great view of Mama snow leopard and her cubs which I rarely get to glimpse!
It was amazing. A lot of people, but didn't feel crowded. Recommend brining a lunch as it can turn into an all day event.
Very well designed zoo. Entertaining and informative. Great place for family.
Melbourne Zoo is a beautiful zoo with lot of things to offer for endangered and vulnerable species!!! This zoo cares a lot about it's animals!!The problem is that in an effort to give space and a good quality of life to these animals there is no room for more. I have been to many zoos in Europe before and I could find many more species than these. Also I don't know if something happened that particularly day but I couldn't find the Tasmanian Devils, the snow leopards and the dingos. Also there was a feeding programme at 11:00 am but they were late about 25 - 30 minutes!! Also food and souvenirs are expensive!!! For example a small sandwitch costs 12.50$!!!! I would also like the glasses at the cages to be cleaner and the same for the paths because I could find dast and mud sometimes!!!
Fantastic place for not only kids even also for adults, I have gone to this zoo for 2 to 3 times with my friends and also with my family. I also have lots of unforgettable moments here, Really amazing place!!!
Hi,
What a great Zoo we have here in Melbourne. I love going to photography the animals. Enjoy my images.
Simon
In a word " disappointed " we did the the 4pm till 8pm, only to find most exhibits closed for "new and exciting coming soon" or no animals out in the enclosure.
Not enough information about the animal and way to much in your face, about cause of the demise off their natural habitat. And due to the covid restrictions all enclosed inclosures where shut to the public. So not worth going.
Some animals didn't seem happy - and several exhibits were closed... :(
I was excited to visit Melbourne Zoo. It is beautiful.
My baby had a really good time and was fascinated by the animals, mainly big ones as she's only 13 months old. the best part was seeong the giraffes, zebras, lions and elephants. The rest is overrated. The place was very crowded on a Saturday, we could barely walk around. We barely saw the tigers as people were jammed there. So, I suggest you go as early as possible to stroll and watch quietly. To make things worse, what started as a sunny day turned to a crazy rainy and muggy day. I know it's typical of this city; just saying check the forecast on different sites. it's alright, not worth the money though.
We loved our day at Melbourne Zoo!! The talks for the Elephant and Giraffes were great!! Sea life was awesome too!
Great day out for all!!
Cassowary:
This ancient-technicolour-reptile-dinosaur is possibly the single most terrifying thing in the world.
Worth a return visit.
First of all, the place is very neat and easy to navigate. And the environment is beautiful. You can spend a whole day in there.
If you Love animals! You ll love Melbourne Zoo. Good place to spend a whole day. I am a zoo member. I visit every now and then. Love it
One of the best zoo's we have visited .. it is very close to the Melbourne city centre and very popular with the locals and the tourists.. it's a must visit when in Melbourne.. the kids love the place and lots of learning experience for them. The zoo layout is well planned and animal enclosure are been made as per their natural habitat..
Great Zoo which will only get better in time, no animals look out of place in this zoo. Good job staff.
Still one of the best attractions Melbourne has to offer.
An amazing day out with the family.
Awesome Zoo spread across a huge green area in the middle of the city. Requires roughly about 4 to 5 hours to cover the entire park. The Zoo is very well maintained and the staff is great. The park is well planned with ample eatouts, cafes and rest rooms. The good thing is it is free entry for kids on weekends.
Beautiful place but didn't see many animals, which was disappointing.
Parking is shocking!!! After driving around for an hour and a half I finally found a space on nature strip, where a car had left. Unfortunately I came out to a $97 parking fine!! Not happy as entry is already very costly!!
Very expensive, they charge us a lot, and not many animals are out. Worst Zoo
Awesome place. Love it. Has enough exciting animals to keep you busy for a whole day. Loved the monkeys and the snow leopard the best.
This huge zoo are very suitable for family with great facilities
They offer free wheel chair to rent
Was a good day and the youngest grandkids 3 & 4 years old loved it as they hadn't been.
Still a shame we don't get to see a lot of the animals. Haven't been there yet and seen all.
Went there today, quite a enjoyable experience!! Well laid out and quite reasonable priced on entry, food and gift stores!! Friendly staff as well!! Got to see most animals.
This is one of the best zoos in the world. From the amazing reptile house that I can spend hours walking through, to the world class butterfly house which is just so beautiful it has to be experienced to really understand.
The lions have an elevated viewing walkway which again provides a first class look into the lives of the lions.
I could go in & on, but you get the idea. I loved the Melbourne Zoo as a child & I still really like to go & understand how truly lucky we are to have such a one of a kind place here in our city. Highly recommended.
We spent half a day here leisurely walking through the meandering walkways enjoying the variety of animal sections on offer and the animals seem to be just as inquisitive as we are Be sure to check out the macaws as the red/blueish one likes the attention and photo with it's little friend The staff are friendly and informative and the lady that did the gorilla talk on July 26th showed great passion for the awesome job she does. Advisable to pre book close-ups before arrival and must book 45 minutes prior to encounter on the day as numbers are limited. Catch a train or tram to zoo with ease as well A credit to all the staff for the hard work and dedication. See you all next time
Great staff. The zoo doesn't look so big, but you can easily spend the whole day there with kids. 6 cafes around the zoo, easy to grab lunch and coffee.
Entry fee is about 37 bucks, annual pass is 111 bucks per adult.
Not hard to find a parking space on weekdays. $2 for 5 hours.
Great zoo, bug enough to spend a solid half day if your quick. Bit expensive and not as many animals as I hoped but still great for all ages
A nice place to visit for people interested in watching animals. Easily accessible via public transport. Platypus and giant Turtle are interesting to see. It can take around 3 to 4 hours covering everything.
Total rip off:
1) $36 per adult
2) $10 per kids during the week
3) $need to pay carpark
4)$9.00 for a hot dog
5) $ 5.00 for a bowl of chips
6) toilets dirty, even with women's tampons on the floor
animals should be in the wild not the zoo. who tf protects something by keeping it caged up? maybe we shouldn't be such an invasive species so that these poor guys don't have to be protected in the first place.
Take your Kids on an inspirational adventure. Melbourne zoo ticks all the boxes, open your eyes, there are plenty of animals explore.
There an Oman Here check photos see who going to win grand final
The third place in Australia zoo. Butterfly place is vey amazing.
You can see cute lemurs without any fence!! There are also many shows where you can know more about the animals and even watch them being fed. There are a great variety of local animals, too. What a fantastic zoo!!
A medium sized zoo, well maintained and has. Lots of fun and interaction. Good place to spend a sunny day
I love the jungle section and how it actually feels like your in a jungle. Nice and cool walking through there in the summer months.
Lovely zoo. The grounds are not big, but well laid out. All of the Australian favorites are there - kangaroo, koala, platypus, ostrich, various birds. Good opportunities to learn more about the animals from the keepers and interact with some of zoo inhabitants upclose. Free for kids on weekends and holidays. Plan to spend at least half a day.
Very family friendly, reasonable prices. Super easy to get to on the 55 tram. Butterflies a highlight as well as walking through the canopies to see the monkeys.
I went there with my hubby and kid. My kid loves this place. You can see animal or birds from a lot of nearby. Very clean and no stench. You can bring you own foods and eat their. Toilet are not clean enough. I was especially looking for freeze magnet souvenir related to Melbourne Zoo, but not found any. All the things in the Gift shop comparatively so high in price. It's a nice place for family outing.
Great place to spend a whole day at and enjoy with friends and family
Very disappointing, does not live up to it's expectations. enclosures are over grown and couldn't see if there was anything in the enclosure.
One of the best zoos I have seen. The walks are nicely laid out and if you lost all the animals this could be a botanical garden if they put out plant tags. Start at the lemurs. They are so much fun and it is amazing to be so close to them. I liked all the fun markers in the Australian Bush section about different kinds of poo. The elephants have a great enclosure and it is nice to see the Thai buildings nearby. The best side is the whole left side, though if they keep working on the right side it will compete. The Japanese garden is nice and by mid October when all the cherry trees will be in bloom, it will be fantastic. I went on an overcast and cool Wednesday and had few crowds to compete with. Most of the food venues were closed when I visited, may be more open on weekends and in summer.
This is a great place to visit.
The Melbourne zoo is clearly a fantastic destination. All of the exhibits were clean and well explained. The keepers were friendly and there were frequent feedings for everyone to watch. We spent six hours in the zoo and weren t ever tired.
My partner and I visited around the middle of last month. Have to admit I was shockingly disappointed to find that a many of the animals were missing from their pens and felt severely cheated that I had just payed full admission price to see what was effectively an almost half empty zoo. The tiger enclosures were completely empty as was the crocodile pen, along with the the seal and aquatic life tanks. Several reptile displays as well as many marsupial exhibitions were also barren.
I have no issue with renovations taking place and understand that animals have to me moved and relocated until they are completed, but when people pay full price for admission, they usually expect to get what they payed for or else be offered a discount.
The lunch amenities were also disastrous, with most of the kiosks and cafes closed throughout the zoo. Also had a truly delightful clash with one of the lunch ladies that could barely speak a word of English and attempted to charge me $19 for a single sandwich and coke. Even when I questioned the price she remained adamant that it was the final price. It wasn't until her co-worker overheard our little spat that I got the proper price. Employing staff that fail shockingly at both basic linguistics and numeracy and abuse customers who point out their mistakes? Makes one wonder who makes the decisions to employ these people.
Overall, a rather disappointing visit which could have been a fun day out at the zoo with my partner.
I love this place literally spent the whole day...few can only appreciate the efforts of the care takers. But overall they did an excellent job in taking care of the animals plus accommodating the people.
Excellent zoo, it really looks like the animals' welfare is important here. It's fun and informative, well set up and clean, easy to navigate, and has heaps of spots for the kids to sit down or bounce around.
We visited on Easter Saturday. Since our last visit in November, the lions and zebras were gone. The gorillas and hippopotamuses were on holiday. There use to be polar bears and snow leopards there but not anymore. Only one of the monkey enclosures on the boardwalk had anything in.
The highlight was the orangutans, the meerkats, the elephants and the giant tortoises.
I will definitely be taking our own lunch next time. $5 for a 600ml drink and the rest of the food made the day very expensive.
Always fun to spend time here. It's worth becoming zoo member if you have young kids so you can always drop it for a couple of hours at your convenience
every time i go there never are many animals actually there and the staff arent helpful and the enclosures are ok but some that did have animals looked... over crowded especially the enclosures for birds
