I m currently trying to get an appointment with neurology for a POTS evaluation/treatment plan and it is awful!!! I have two referrals from two different providers and every time I call, I get the run around. Yesterday I was told by the scheduler I would probably get denied if I didn t have a referral from my primary care provider. The original referral was from a cardiologist in the Twin Cities and apparently that isn t good enough. I guess be prepared to get the run around and be shuffled around like a number vs a person.

I had spent months trying to find out what was wrong with me. Going from one medical facility to the next, doctor to doctor, getting test results over and over. I finally decided to visit the mayo clinic and they figured out what was wrong with me and got me on a treatment plan that is working!

This hospital is a joke!! There departments never communicate. One area tells you to take a medication while another tells you, you needed to stop that a long time ago.. waiting for them to check insurance for a transplant tells you in about 14 days they should have something... then calls again with in the 14 days to ask the same questions meaning then haven't taken care of it. Then when you live 2 hours away for an out patient surgery they call you to see if you can come early so we show up 2 hours early and 3 hours after showing up they still dont have you in surgery. The bed side manners has sucked in every area beside ICU. I will rather die then ever come here and let them touch me. My poor mother has no other choice then to come here.

Mayo Clinic has been a life changer for me! I went to several different Dr's in several different states and they told me there was nothing wrong with me it was all in my head. My first day at Mayo, actually my first appointment, I walked in the Dr's office and within 5 minutes he told me I had a rare disorder and told us the name.of it and explained it. They have helped me to understand what I have and how to deal with it. If you have anything serious going on, make the trip to Mayo! You won't regret it.

In March of 2013, my daughter went from having roughly a siezure a year to having them almost daily. We weren t finding any answers so we wound up getting in to Mayo, Rochester with high hopes since they have such a great reputation. We met with an initial doctor (Bodensteiner) in the neuro/epilepsy unit and liked him and what he had to say. We were promised we wouldn t leave there without a diagnosis and treatment plan. They ran some tests and then admitted her for observation. Some nurses were nice but some were VERY snotty and rude. My daughter was under 24 hour camera watch. I would go get a cup of water periodically or run downstairs to get my meal. One of the times, the nurse came in and very sarcastically said to her, Doesn t he realize that every time he leaves the room, we have to come down here? Um, no, because I was never told that. I can t follow an instruction I was never given. Then what was the camera for? After that they gave me attitude any time I had to leave the room for something. After 3 days, she finally had a siezure and it didn t show up on the EEG so they were non-epileptic. They (Kuppka, sp.) came in and told us very coldly that she s fine and to go home. Also, he told her she would be all right to drive (she s 15 and can start driver s ed.). Uh, excuse me, no she can t. Luckily, she s smart enough to know that s not an option right now, but I didn t appreciate him telling her that. We had asked them repeatedly about POTS syndrome for her as a cause and it fell on deaf ears. Before we left, I had a few questions that I wanted to ask because I felt we gained NOTHING from our visit. The doctor called our room and cut me off mid question and said, I m not here to argue with you. In no way, shape, or form was I arguing. Because I was confused about our no diagnoses and no treatment as promised, I was arguing evidently. I was just asking what we were supposed to do. So, we went home and I called and left a message for Bodensteiner to talk with him about how we didn t get a diagnosis nor a treatment plan and to please call me. I got a LETTER about a week letter saying he called my daughter s pediatrician and the letter unsaid everything he told us in the initial meeting. I guess he knew he would never see us again after that first meeting. And why would he return MY call to someone else? I m not sure how this place got to be known as the gold standard for medicine because EVERY person I know that has heard our story that has been to Mayo also, has nodded their head and told me basically the same story back. I have had handfulls of people tell me that Mayo either just said keep doing what you re doing or you re fine . Do they EVER come up with their own diagnosis and treatment? After looking through forums, we took my daughter to an actual POTS doctor in Chicago and guess what, POTS DIAGNOSIS. Gee, thanks Mayo. And the true irony is that THEY discovered POTS at Mayo. I would do more research on the internet for other places before settling on there. It was nice to get that bill from them for $28,000 for rude nurses, unfeeling doctors, no diagnosis, and no treatment. I will never go back.

I was admired to St. Mary's from the Emergency Room with a kidney abcess. I was under the care of the general medical team. It seemed like the team had not seen a kidney abcess before. They tried to send me home twice only to have me spike another high fever with vomiting and severe chills before I could get to the door. The resident told me she was going to put me on a kidney transplant list. Finally on day 6 of the stay, the team asked for advice from a kidney specialist who said a transplant was ridiculous, and that kidney abscesses behave exactly like this - needing multiple rounds of antibiotic treatment. The incompetence was scary.

I can't understand anyone would rate Mayo Clinic less than 5 stars. This is, by far, the best. From small, hard to determine, issues to replacement of major joints, these people are outstanding. Testing and imagining is the fastest in the medical business, and their medical teams understand what to do with the information.

I had the pleasure of working at Mayo Clinic for nearly six years, but did not realize the true value of Mayo until I became a patient. I became a patient recently when I had a life threatening event. The number of doctors, residents, nurses and other support that they had across several departments and the coordination to ensure I had the best possible outcome was absolutely amazing. I was treated initially at another hospital in the twin cities and after they initially treated me all they wanted to do was avoid readmission to the hospital and if I had not gone to Mayo I fear what the outcome may have been. Thank you Mayo!!!

My father has been working with the Mayo for a few years on a unique heart situation. Recently, he went in for some routine work, which became more complicated. His 2 days stay extended into a 5 day stay at the St. Mary's campus. The nurses, the doctors, and every other staff member we worked with were incredible. They were all very knowledgeable, empathetic, and helpful. My parents and I have nothing but the highest regard for the Mayo Clinic, and we feel they are the #1 hospital. Thank you, Mayo!!

You walk into this behemoth of a medical clinic, and you immediately think, "THIS place will be LEGIT!"
Nope.
I've been battling UC for about two years now, and decided to go to the Mayo Clinic to get serious about finding a treatment that would put me into remission. I had one consultation with an experienced doctor, and then the rest of my treatment was handled by a med student. The med student has now graduated, and now I'm told the primary doctor, who was supposed to be supervising the med student, doesn't have a clue about my symptoms or what the med student was doing all along.
The med student was rude and seemed in over her head, and being from India could not speak English fluently. I wouldn't care except that she made some serious English mistakes. For example, she couldn't use the word "interval" correctly, and when she said "increase the interval" between doses, she actually meant taking the dose within a shorter span of time! HUGE difference!
My assumption throughout that time was that at least the experienced doctor was overlooking the med student, making sure what she prescribed was adequate and safe. Well, once the med student graduated and went, and I asked what I should do next - since I'm still not in remission - I get an email from a secretary_saying that the supervising doctor isn't familiar with my correspondance with the med student, and to explain what my symptoms are. Don't they have records of this stuff?! And isn't the primary doctor supposed to be aware to some degree?
And to top it all off, they ask if I'm seeing a local specialist, so that they can administer the next round of meds. So if I need a local specialist after all of this, why see them? Given my experience, I don't really see the point.
IMO, this hospital is a patient mill that's just trying to churn out medical treatment as quickly and cheaply as possible.

Worst. Experience. Ever. And that's before we were going to go to the center. Not what I expected from such a renown institution. Appreciate the generic email response via third party that the Dr. took time to copy/paste from his generic email response list. Needless to say we're taking our daughter someplace that can take the time to speak to the parents about the care proposed for their child.

The way hey have their tests in all patient info integrated into their app is second to none. This should be the standard that all medical uses. We traveled to the Mayo from our of state being told it's the best hospital in the country. I'm disappointed. Wait times are awful. There is a huge lack of communication. They pretty much just give you a print out of tests and appointments that you need to go to. That's it. You can review the tests at any time like I said, but you don't see your "Primary" doctor again until everything on the list they gave you is done. By that time, they want you to stay for additional tests, which could have been done already. It's like they don't realize many people come from far away, and that they can't stay indefinitely. Really hope I don't have to come back.

Mayo Clinic is a very frustrating place. High quality doctors that are overall poor communicators, with nurses and staff that don't understand they are serving the patients. Scheduling is crazy at Mayo--they will string you along, schedule you months in advance, change times at the last minute without telling you, and in some cases act like they really don't care (nurses in particular). Love the top doctors in their field, hate the Mayo corporate machine. Only come here if you are willing to be constantly frustrated, delayed, and told conflicting information.

Lots of poor infection control measures on the general medical floors at St Mary's hospital and poor oversight of new nurses and residents. Sadly the care here has declined over the last few years.

Google escape from Mayo Clinic They kidnapped a teenager last year after the doctor got mad at the patient for trying to transfer to another hospital.
CNN, legal experts, and ethic experts denounced the clinic and their practices in many recent articles finally surfacing after all these years.
"I hope that someone somewhere will look at what happened in this unfortunate case and improve both our Mayo employee's actions and patient systems so that it not need happen again to any other patient at Mayo," Gaalswyk, the former Mayo board member, wrote a Mayo vice president after Alyssa left the hospital. "The situation need not get out of hand like it did."

*DO NOT GO HERE FOR LUNG CANCER!* When my mother was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer, the first thing we did was contact the Mayo clinic. We spent the first 6 months of my mom's treatment at the Mayo clinic and NEVER saw an actual board certified oncologist... we saw physician's assistants, residents, nurse practitioners, but never the lead doctor. We were told it is a "team approach." However, the resident assigned to my mother's case was completely incompetent and apparently her lead attendings did not follow up on the guidance she was giving her patients. Because of the type of lung cancer my mother had (non small cell adenocarcinoma - non smoker), there were no targeted therapies available. There was an upcoming clinical trial that she felt was our best option. She advised us it was fine to wait for that trial and not do any treatment in the meantime. My mom went 4 months with no treatment, at the residents advice, and in the end it cost her her life. The cancer progressed to her liver and bones. The trial, we found out later, actually required previous treatment that the resident had advised against, so my mom wasn't a candidate anyways. Once finally on the trial, the trial doctor was rude, insensitive, and completely ill-prepared for the actual trial. They had no concept for how to manage dangerous side effects and the trial drug almost killed my mom. The trial ended for my mom, without any discussion, and we moved her treatment to the U of M Masonic Cancer Center. The U of M was amazing and we saw the oncology attending physician every visit. Bottom line, if you have lung cancer, DO NOT GO TO MAYO, GO TO U of M!!

They refused to see me for an issue out of the realm of my team of local doctors who referred me on to Mayo. Mayo is supposedly top of the line for medical care, so it is extremely disappointing that they pick and choose who to help & who not to help without even trying. It leads me to believe their high numbers and top ratings are not accurate, especially if they are only accepting applications from either patients that they know 100% what the issue is or or have a good idea what it may be and are not a challenge. I expected so much more and at very least their team of doctors to do a work up and try to get to the root of my issue. People with atypical and challenging conditions deserve quality care too.
When I spoke over the phone, after initially submitting my application, the lady in customer service who called me advised me that yes, they WOULD see me & actually within 12 weeks - and this was after discussing my health issue in depth. They would call to schedule. However, per an email the next business day I was then notified they had now decided not to see me which was not what she told me over the phone.

Horrible experience: The internal med Dr. I initially saw, Dr. Sanjeev Nanda, basically blew off my symptoms and told me "do you want me to just repeat what you already have had done to make you feel better?"
No I said, this is the Mayo Clinic, I thought you could help me with more "out of the box" or rare reasons this is occurring. So he sent me to a few specialists, and they all listened, ordered some blood work and away I went.
I came home and received a bill for over $2600, even though I work full-time as a RN, and have excellent insurance. I also met my yearly out-of-pocket maximum, so I thought I would not have a bill for anything. Let me preface by saying I checked to make sure the Mayo clinic was in-network and my visit would be covered.
Now to get what the bills are for:
MRI re-read- $1300...yes that's right, another radiologist/neurologist just opened my already done and interpreted Brain MRI and they charged me $1300! When I asked the Mayo Clinic's billing about this they touted their response and said "we're the Mayo Clinic," like we are the best....yea right lady.
The other $1300+ charges were for blood work which included genetic testing I guess. I was not told that they were doing genetic blood work that needed prior approval, they just sent me to the lab to give blood.
My discussion with Mayo Clinic's billing lady "Jo"- she would not give me her full name, was very upsetting. She just basically said "we're the best, and you need to pay this..." She would not listen to me at all and was very cold in her response. I am sure she is used to fighting with people.
All in all, I think the Mayo Clinic is acting like a facility that is too big for it's britches...They think they are the best, and charge like it. They did not help me, really listen to me, and now I have to write appeals for stuff that they didn't warn me required prior approval.
I would not recommend going here.

The Mayo Clinic is by far one of the most amazing facilities I have ever been to and had the opportunity to interact with. The kind of comprehensive care they provide, the collaboration between all their medical staff, all to provide their patients the very best care - well, it's something truly to behold.
Their level of care is so far above and beyond your 'regular' medical hospitals and physicians - well, it's no wonder they are world leaders in medicine.
I cannot ever say enough good things about this organization. As someone who works in the healthcare industry, I know truly exceptional care and service when I see it. This place is a pinnacle of modern medicine.

Unfortunately I did not have a good experience. Being in the healthcare field I may have higher standards than the next person but I was disappointed. Went down there after years of struggling with digestive issues. After a colonoscopy and endoscopy they had no idea. Okay, I understand if there is nothing there what are they supposed to do. My doctor was a resident (final years in medical school) and I felt he did a great job. The doctor supervising him on the other hand was odd... didnt make eye contact with me and kept rattling off big medical terms to make it sound like he really knew his stuff. However I knew what he was talking about and his ideas did not add up. While I was waking up from my sedation from my colonoscopy/endoscopy I was in the same room with 3 middle age men and no privacy (I'm a 23 yr old female). All the nurses were standing in the corner chatting amongst them selves. I was rather groggy waking up so the on of the nurses asked if I needed a wheelchair. It wasn't a polite offer it was a "my job requires me to be nice" offer. Extremely disappointed in the care I received and am very hesitant to refer anyone down there.
First class medicine? World renowned physicians? G...
First class medicine? World renowned physicians? Good joke, Mayo. This institution is a far cry from the level of care and expertise that made it stand out as a first rate facility in the past. Mayo is too busy herding people in and out like cattle and raking in the funds to take the time to really care about anyone. Seems like they want the "run of the mill" cases instead of the challenging ones, because it's fast and easy, and they can get more easy cases in and out the door (and billed for) quicker.
I sent all of my records there, yet nobody bothered to look at them in the 4 weeks leading up to my appointment. Flew out to Mayo with 2 family members (we all took vacation days from work, had to take a plane, etc) We were in and out of Mayo in 1 hour ...after Dr. Ahlskog in Neurology refused any testing or care (on any level). Told me I had to come back in 2 months for tests due to a procedure I had done by my current physician recently that would negate the results of the test.
Had somebody taken 2 seconds to review my records, they would have known I had this procedure done and then scheduled my appointment for 2 months later. Your doctors may be able to afford to fly anywhere on a whim for absolutely nothing, but the average person cannot. A patient would have no idea of the parameters of a test they didn't even know existed.
Not only did Dr. Ahlskog actually yell at me and my family while we were there, he became incredibly defensive and unprofessional if we questioned him on ANYTHING he said throughout the appointment. Apparently we are not allowed to ask questions about our own health.
For instance, he told me he did not believe I had what I was diagnosed with (and been receiving treatment for) a year ago, but when I asked what he thinks I might have, he said, "not that." and refused any further explanation. When I showed him medical records I brought (since he didn t read the ones I sent) which showed multiple emg results that prove significant neurological problems, he said they were irrelevant. At one point he told me to go home and GET A PHYSICAL. LOL! yeah doc, I flew my family and myself out to Mayo without ever getting a physical or seeing any other doc on the planet. When my mother expressed concern over me ending up in the hospital for an extended period of time like last year, his response was "I guess we'll deal with that when it happens" .......um, what?
Further, I wrote a 3 page professional letter to Mayo's patient experience office (leaving my emotions out of it and just stating the facts of what occurred during the appointment) detailing the callousness of Dr. Ahlskog, and after a week and a half they sent a generic form letter in response which in no other words stated, "We're sorry you re disappointed with your visit. Thanks for your input and have a good day."
After reading many other reviews, I feel stupid for "going with the herd" in thinking this was a great place, rather than reading the reviews ahead of my visit and canceling. Sure would've saved me a lot of time, money, and hope. Seems like a lot of other people shared the same disappointment as me.

Our Concierge doctor recommended my wife visit the Mayo Clinic to address a spine issue. She had a spine fusion last year, and has one surgeon wanting a secondary procedure, and another saying it s fine despite her hardly being able to walk without extreme pain. We were hoping the Mayo Clinic could provide an acedemic opinion for us to decide next steps. From the beginning of her stay at the Mayo Clinic, it has been a disaster. She traveled to Rochester alone, and has been treated poorly and condescended to by her doctors. Despite clearly stating the spine issue as the reason for the visit, the Mayo Clinic didnt even have her scheduled with a spine orthopedic. Now they are saying despite her being there now, they can t get her to see the spine surgeons for an opinion until March. It was the whole reason she went to Rochester in January, so this is absurd. Instead of having the purpose of her visit addressed, she has had her time wasted. Despite her still being on the Mayo Campus, we are scheduling her at the NYC Hospital for Special Surgery. What a disappointment and gigantic waste of time. As a pharmacologist and medical professional, I am dismayed at the flippant and condescending manner in which my wife has been treated. Do yourself a favor, don t go to the Mayo Clinic.
Update. It turns out my wife s issue was degenerative and required immediate surgical attention. All it took was one visit to Weill Cornell NYC and they booked her for surgery. How the Mayo Clinic failed to recognize this was a serious situation after repeated pleading from us, instead insulting and belittling my wife is beyond disappointing.

When I was 14, I started getting really sick for no apparent reason. I had blood pressure issues, tachycardia, panic attacks, dizziness, and something that was basically a more minor version of locked-in syndrome. It was exhausting and horrifying. For two years, doctors treated the symptoms as I gradually got worse with time. At 16, I was diagnosed with a condition that was neurological and cardiological, but was prescribed a treatment that just didn't work. The next two years, my life revolved around my ever deteriorating illness and I began to pass out regularly. My senior year of high school was a wreck. I passed out one day in January and I never attended a full day of school the rest of the year, because my system just wouldn't bounce back and I could hardly function. I had doctors telling me everything from it was all in my head to I was dying of a brain tumor. At 17, I was terrified that I was dying or was going to live a life of utter misery, as I underwent every test with no conclusive results. My parents pulled their resources and got me to Mayo Clinic after graduation. Within a week, they determined that I had been put on the wrong medication two years prior and gave me something new for my heart. Within months, I was much more stable and wished I had had this medication at age 14! I got pregnant at 19 and pregnancy put my heart, hormones, and body through a lot of strain. If I hadn't been on the medication Mayo gave me, I honestly don't know that I would have survived. They take your situation seriously, they pull from interdisciplinary advice, and they do not give up. If you can get here to see these amazing physicians, I truly believe there can be hope for most situations.

This entire clinic is completely disorganized. When you make an appointment there is zero follow up. They don't send you any sort of reminder or directions on where to go. When you do get there you do not get treated like a person, you get treated like a number. They treat their patients however they want. You will get tossed around like a little toy, lied to, and if they don't like you they will go to any length to get rid of you. Which is discrimination. And, if you so happen to mention you are not religious they will become billigerant. They are not welcoming in any sort of way and do make their patients and their families feel safe. You may plan on one procedure, but they might change it at the 11th hour without telling you. You have no rights here. You are not an American and you have basically stepped into a prison. Kidnapped a patient and tried to get guardianship of her. Claimed she was unable to make her own decisions, yet let her make her own medical decisions. Social worker "diagnosed" her mother with mental health issues in retaliation for being an advocate, something no social worker is qualified or able to do. This hospital retaliated against a patient and her family for wanting to be transferred. Upon rescuing her, and obtaining a second opinion, that other hospital determined she was able to make her own decisions and recover at home. Please Google "Escape from mayo clinic". Why did you not involve your ethics committee, Mayo? Why did you try to make an 18 year old woman a ward of the state when she was surrounded by family and loved ones? I can tell you why , because what you did is more than just unethical, it is abhorrent, reeks of money, greed, pride, spite and revenge.

Uncle had a terrible experience here. They sent him running around from place to place. He had samples sent out a month in advance to the lab to be processed and when he got there for his appointment they had still not done the tests.

This is one of the best hospitals in the country for a reason they re organized, thorough, and actually have caring and competent doctors. They communicate with other specialists (and my own physicians in a different state) so that everyone is on the same page. That takes a lot of stress off the patient.
When I was first referred to Mayo I didn t know what to expect but I was extremely impressed. Even though they see a mass amount of patients every year it was still easy to make an appointment and I received a helpful appointment reminder and map of Mayo and a list of area hotels and restaurants in the mail.
The doctors I saw we re very detailed and they reviewed my previous medical records with me in my first appointment and took as much time as needed, which was great because most physicians watch the clock and tend to speed through consultation appointments.
I truly feel I received the best care and I m more confident having gone to Mayo than I was seeing my regular doctor in my home town. If you re suffering with a serious medical condition and want concrete answers I recommend making the trip to Mayo.

They care about you if you come from out of town. They could care less about their serving people in their own community. I started going there when I found out I was pregnant with my son. The whole birthing experience was good, it was after that i had problems. I needed to be seen for a variety of things and wanted to be set up with a primary care doctor. It took me about 6 months of calling and being totally inappropriate rude for them to set me up with a nurse practitioner at the north west clinic. Many times that I called they would say they do not have primary care doctors available. They also told me to go back to where I came from when I called one time. I used to go to OMC but there was something with my insurance that was better to go to mayo. Overall I was just disgusted by that experience. I feel like they do not care about me, a resident of their own community because they are too busy trying to impress the rest of the world.

Don t rely on Mayo to be your first port of call if you are from the community. This hospital picks and chooses which patients they give appointments to and seem unwilling to provide care unless you have been referred by other specialists.

My husband drove me up to Mayo for appointments and tests beginning on Jan 2, 2018. We expected to be there for A week but ended up having to extend for a 2nd week. I can't say enough praise for ALL of the doctors, nurses, support staff, volunteers!! We went to get answers and we got so much more than we expected - verification of some medical issues we already knew about and then also found out about some that we weren't! Mayo is a teaching hospital but not just for the medical professional but also the patient and their families. Thank for such excellent care and paying close attention to detail!!
Never again will we place any family members well-...
Never again will we place any family members well-being in the hands of this institution. On Easter morning, my wife took my son to the emergency room for a repair to his Broviac line which was clotted. He is TPN dependent and very susceptible to infections which could quickly become septic. First, this world renowned facility did not have a repair kit anywhere in the hospital. This is something that should be readily available at all times. Second, the on duty nurse broke the line while trying to flush it and took no preventative measures to close it off besides a clamp. Fortunately, my wife is a nurse and corrected this mistake. Worse than both of these, the on-call emergency doctor refused to come in because it was Easter and had the staff tell my wife to bring my son back tomorrow and he would look at him then. Knowing how quickly my son could decline if an infection were introduced, my wife had to drive him another couple hours north to Minneapolis in order to get the required care. There is absolutely no excuse for a doctor to respond this way. If he doesn't want to work on Easter, then find a different career. I found the mistreatment by this "medical professional" completely uncalled for and a source of embarrassment to this hospital. I have tried to follow up with mayo clinic on multiple attempts in an effort to make sure no other family had to deal with this nonsense, but have not gotten any response back. Very disheartened by this hospital, the lack of care and responsibility during this visit, as well as the dismissal of the situation by their "leadership".

Their neuroimmunology team is world class. They do make a few mistakes, but far fewer than others. They interpreted my PET scan correctly, which had been misinterpreted in Froedert Hopsital. They are among the few US medical institutions that operate as scientists, not just clinicians. They gave me my life back, after a year of needless suffering in Froedert and Columbia St Mary's.
