Matt the tattoo artist is AMAZING! Great guy with a good sense of humor. He did an amazing job covering a tattoo for me. You would never know that it was there. Anyone looking to get ink. Go see Matt at Masterpiece tattoo. And by the way his receptionist Lauren is very helpful and nice. 5 stars all day.

stopped in with a friend a month or so ago and she went first. The artist smelt, he was drifting off while wiping her shoulder, and the atmosphere was uncomfortable. I am so glad that I passed on my tattoo. Maybe he was just tired....but she now has raised skin. never going back and I hope she does something if the skin doesn't heal.

Congratulations to matt and brian, the new owners of masterpiece tattoo and body piercing!! All of the staff there are just down to earth, helpful, friendly people. I walked in there spur of the moment with an idea of a tattoo that ive wanted for a couple years but didnt know exactly how i wanted it all to come together. Then i met matt!! I told him my idea of what i wanted and within seconds he said "dont worry i got you" "im going to sketch something out for you"!
He was right when he said "i got you" bc i fell in-love and was sold on his first sketch all bc he simply listened to me when i told him my idea....matt's a talented artist and i would absolutely recommend him!!

Went there Saturday 2-23-18. Had a nice picture of ace of spades. The nicest lady at the desk said it would take too long to make ,so she looked up another one. Well I looked at it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I'll tell you when the tattoo artist was done with it i was blown away. Unbelievable work,detail,coloring you name it he done it. They charged me a price that was too me way underpriced for the time and work they put into it. My wife got the exact same treatment. Hers was done free hand. These two tattoos were as custom as your gonna get, for a price you'll never get or expect. GO THERE FOR YOUR NEXT WORK, YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED . Thank you Masterpiece I'll be sending everyone I can to your shop. I would put a pic up, but i dont want this work copied LMAO.

I have been going to Masterpiece for years and my favorite artist has to be Matt! He is so chill, he s done most of my tattoos and I always go back! They are all very friendly and always make you feel comfortable.

I have gotten most of my tattoo work done here, and I have gotten all of my piercings here for 5 years now, and I ve never had a bad experience. Chad has done two of my tattoos and they are honestly very well done & were exactly how I wanted them. I got a small piece done by Randy today and it also went very well! Very personable and my tattoo came out crisp and clean. The studio is clean and I ve witnessed how diligent they are with cleaning between clients. The woman at the desk is always very helpful to me and my mother, and the cute dog is a bonus as well. As long as you re educated on what you want and expect to pay slightly more for better quality, you won t have a problem here. If you want a cheap tattoo, expect to get what you pay for at other tattoo shops.

WAY too many one stars from the past ownership. I was a bit ify at first because so many people gave one stars three years ago, but I dont see how you could one star the new managment. Matt is INCREDIBELY talented and has given me exactly what I wanted. Service was fast, and I have absolutely no complaints. Masterpiece is THE PLACE to go.

Came here about 12 years ago for my first two tattoos and I must say, the service this last week was incomparable to the last owners .Matt and Brian are so great ! Great service and awesome artists, not to mention extremely reasonable prices . I went in to have a memorial piece done of my late grandmother and I couldn t be more happy with how it came out . Matt did an amazing job, I will definitely be going back for more work!

Made an appointment with Matt for 7:15 and he was ready to go at that time!! My tattoo came out amazing!! I will be going back for more tattoos with him in the very near future!

Got my second tattoo here on friday the 13th, it was so quick and professional. I LOVE the way it turned out, the receptionist was hilarious and made waiting fun. Matt was my artist and he was very funny, loved it here.

I went in yesterday and got an Ashley piercing. Before I went in I called and spoke to a very friendly and helpful woman at the front counter she helped me with the cost and gave me an estimate of what I should bring in with me. When I got there I let her know I had called ahead and she was very nice and gave me the paperwork to sign. The process was quick and easy. Adam is the one that did the piercing and he assured me that it would be quick. He helped get rid of my nervousness and also went over after care instructions. All in all it was a great experience. I had no issues at all and I love my piercing!

Matt was awesome. I brought in a new, last minute design and he sketched up something that was perfect. I will definitely be coming back soon. 10/10 would recommend!!

Great artists mine stayed after hours just to start my tattoo and they are funny

Got a tattoo there recently. Had a font tattoo idea that two other places couldn't accommodate. Matt drew it up real quick. I didn't care for it so he drew another one up real quick no problem. It was much better but there was still an alteration I wanted which he then made on the spot. Got the tattoo, it came out great and I will be back soon. I checked out his art on instagram and he looks like a pretty versatile artist as and not stuck in a box.

Met all aspects of what I wanted I can truly thank you guys. Much needed in my life tbh.

Walked in and was greeted by an extremely rude old woman working behind the counter who looked at our 10 pound poodle, which was being carried, and said "that's not going to work" and pointed to her dog, which was also behind the counter. Confused, we asked for clarification. She repeated herself with a nasty attitude in her voice and said "my dog doesn't like other dogs". Guess her untrained dog runs the business. Complete waste of time, they should post a sign specifying there's an agressive dog inside the shop.

Updating this review 3/31/19 because I see I got a reply. We should have asked about bringing in a dog? And at what point where we supposed to do that when you told us IMMEDIATELY upon entering that we couldn't bring our pet in. And most businesses that don't sell food actually do in fact allow small trained pets in their shops. It is both ignorant and sad of you to try to imply otherwise so that you can pass blame to me rather than apologizing for your appalling attitude. And lastly, you are going to tell me the dogs aren't allowed in that shop but yours is? That is very poor customer service. it's hypocritical, and sends the message to your customers do you believe your dog is above theirs. but yeah go ahead and keep arguing with customers who are critical of you when you have a 3.7 average on Google.

I so appreciate that i had GREAT experience for my First tattoo.Chad Wheeler was very patient and kind and is truly an artist! He did a beautiful dragonfly i wanted in memory of my Mom and Dad.I am so happy with his work and would recommend him to anyone.Thank you.Masterpiece is aptly named.

Is there anyone who could give me an estimated price on a medium/large dream catcher hip tattoo, I don't have the money for it yet but i just wanna know so i can start saving :) I saw in the reviews many were getting quick and helpful responses from the owner. However if i don't get a response on here ill just go in. Anyone who can help me out?

Very reasonable priced tattoos that come out great. The only downside is that the artist does keeping leaving mid tattoo for smoke breaks. Absolutely love the art work.

I got a tattoo here last week with Matt. He was very friendly and did an awesome job! I actually brought my sister back the next week for her first tattoo!! I will be back!!

The guy who did my tattoo was a real jerk. I have other tattoos done by artists at other locations and they've come out fine but the one this goober did is infected despite me taking care of the tattoo. The only pleasant thing about this place is the dog they have behind the desk.

It was a friendly atmosphere from the moment I walked into that shop. I went to get a tattoo covered up, and they were very helpful with suggestions and pricing. I got my tattoo done by Randy who did a phenomenal job. Very kind and accommodating people. I look forward to doing more business in the near future.

my wife and i walked in without an apointment and they got us in right away. super friendly made us very comfortable. got to sit back and watch tv while getting tattooed. and the tattoo came out better than we even expected.

my husband and i went to 5 different shops in the last 4 days looking to get king and queen tattoos for mothers day. after being told by everyone of them that there would be no less than a 30 day wait to do a 30 minute tattoo we walked into masterpiece and they had us in the studio getting tattooed in less than 15 minutes. will recommend Masterpiece to all of my friends from now on

I went here with my sister to get my septum and ears done and she went to get a Monroe and her nose pierced. We went in june 2012 in on a Monday early afternoon. Walked in the decor was poor for sure. We were helped immediately and courtesly by jen who is one of the piercers. The experience was awesome. She made sure we knew what to do for after care and was very thorough. Very laid back took her time definitely ask for her if ya choose to go here. I hear the other dudes kind of a sink. Jen you rock!!! :-D

My wife and I have been to Masterpiece a few times the past year for cover up/repair work. Matt provides a great atmosphere/experience. Laid back, and most importantly has done a tremendous job with anything we have thrown at him to fix. He clearly takes pride in what he does. Looking forward to getting more work done, and see more of his talent.

I was traveling out of state and needed to buy a new surface piercing. The older man working here was nothing but rude. He didn't even bother to check if the store had what I needed. He just blew me off and made a passive aggressive comment about where I got my piercing done. I was just looking for some help. Never stopping here again.

I've gotten 2 tattoos from Masterpiece dating back 23 years. I'm currently getting a third....a half sleeve that incorporates the tattoo that is on my left bicep. Their prices are competitive. Go during the week to avoid long waits. I would definitely recommend making a reservation. I don't think they are as busy as they use to be since tattooing is now legal in Massachusetts. Very talented artists and the owner is great. Very clean and uncluttered parlor.

Let me start off by saying that I was planning on going to Masterpiece, down the street. However, after reading some of their reviews I was a little skeptical that I wouldn't be able to get it done there, because some people said they showed up and the piercers were no longer there. Despite having called ahead, and having driven for over an hour to get there, I walked in and the woman at the front desk asked a guy, who was doing a tattoo, if he would have time to squeeze in a piercing, since he was filling in. I'm glad he said no, because I didn't really want someone who is just "filling in" for the regular piercers to pierce my nipples, one of the more sensitive areas of my body.

I guess it was a blessing in disguise because that lead my to try Ed's Heritage, right down the street, and I'm so glad I did! Firstly, they were much more friendly on the phone, and in person. My piercer was super professional and down to earth, making be feel very comfortable exposing my breasts to a complete stranger.

Went in with an idea for a memorial tattoo. Very friendly and helpful. I ended up getting my ex's signature with heartbeat lines and a red heart. It came out beautiful and I will def be back for a palm tree tattoo !! Randy is an amazing artist. I'd love to connect with him on FB.

These are the words I spoke to my boyfriend, in between tears, after leaving Masterpiece Tattoo.

I went in to get a repair consultation done regarding work I had gotten years ago from another artist that was, honestly, less than professional. I stated that to the first person that greeted us and after taking a brief look at my work, he excused himself to speak to someone in the back. He described my tattoo (A very simple heart with a paw print, commemorating the loss of a beloved childhood dog). An older gentleman then came out and, without saying a word, grabbed my arm to look at the tattoo. He spent the next few minutes berating the quality which I was clearly aware of as I was there trying to fix it. He continued to give us an attitude as he asked what we were looking for but then acting as if we were idiots to make suggestions. I said again I am not a professional so that s why I m here to get some advice. I couldn t wait for him to let go of my arm just so we could leave. He finally blurted out a price and we politely said we would have to think about it and left.

I was simply looking for some assistance to make something that means a lot to me a little more special. I expected to deal with a professional but unfortunately it seems as if I will have to look elsewhere.

Not only was I disrespected once, in person at this establishment, but yet again with a response on my review. The response is an all out lie suggesting that I was upset about price. No where in my review did it suggest I had an issue with price nor did I say that in person. I am furious as you continue to belittle me and repeatedly refer to my tattoo as done in someone s basement, done in someone s kitchen. You don t know that because I never told you. And it is not even true. How dare you? I came to you for help and you have successfully proven to have the worst customer service I could even imagine. No one deserves to be treated this way. Especially someone going to you for business. Shame on you.

Was going to come in and get birthday tattoos with my girlfriend. But the girl who answered the phone at 12:30pm on 7/26/20 was EXTREMELY rude and basically rushed me off the phone , didn't even attempt to do her job and was giving me an attitude for no reason when I was nice. Very unprofessional 0/10 went to mayhem tattoo instead

I think my artist name was Nathan? But I could be wrong, but the piece turned out great! The man at the front was rude to me though, would have given 5 stars if it weren't for that. Kind of overpriced in my opinion but my artist was a great guy

Just recently got a tattoo done by Matt , came out perfect I might add .
Joe came in half way through Matt completing my tattoo and the 2 of them provided the comic relief portion of getting a tattoo at Master Piece . Well worth the admission, extremely talented and funny.
Also had vehicle issues, the both would not rest until they knew I was good .
Not only are they great artists and tattooist but they great people.

My daughter got a piercing. Very clean and professional

The guy who did my tattoo was very rude. He never told me his name and barely said a word to me the entire time. He didn't let me see my tattoo after and didn't tell me how care for it after. The older women at the front desk was very rude as well. Overall it was a bad experience and they are very over priced.

Went in with my friend tonight for tattoos and I m honestly so in love with how they came out. Matt did such an awesome job, I couldn t be happier!! I will most definitely be back for more

Got my nipples piereced here and my lip pierced a few months later. Very professional very clean. My piercings were great healed very well. I'd def go back to get all my work done.

Staff is so helpful and down to earth. I immediately felt comfortable and knew I was in good hands with the guys here. Joe took the picture I brought in and drew something even better for me! He made suggestions about placement and sizing. I couldn t be happier!!

I've been here several times for piercings, a tattoo and my daughter got a piercing here as well. I've had nothing but wonderful experiences every time.

Sue at the front desk is friendly, helpful and super knowledgeable about tats and piercings. She knows her her stuff and I have no hesitation taking her advice.

Dan does both tattoos and piercings and I love his quiet calm confidence and professionalism . I read in other comments that he was rude and didn't talk while tattooing. I personally am a graphite pencil artist and I can't hold a conversation when I draw because I need to focus . Folks--the man is pushing ink under your skin with a very sharp and fast moving needle. If his style is to be quiet while creating a tattoo, please honor that. If you want conversation, bring a friend. I've found that talking to Dan after he finishes his work to have a great sense of humor and is super smart.

The new piercer, Dana Dunn, is fantastic and fun and has cool things in his room. He's friendly and also very professional and is very careful about placement and safety of piercings.

The shop itself is tidy and full of ideas for tattoos. The front cases have great quality and well chosen body piercing jewelry. While some pieces are more expensive such as the gold, I am of the opinion that you get what you pay for. If you want cheap jewelry, you take the chance of infection or allergic reactions. If you want to make the investment of your new piercing to enhance your individual look and personality, invest in good quality jewelry.

I will not hesitate to go back here for any tattoo or piercing and prefer my daughter and friends go here rather than anywhere else.

My mother and I have been wanting to get a very personal tattoo together and we decided spur of the moment to go to masterpiece tattoo in Salem. To say I was disappointed in their professionalism is an extreme understatement. I came in with a drawing of the exact tattoo that my mother and I drew up for it and the woman at the counter tried drawing it multiple times, making the letters upside down and hard to read. Seeing as it is going on my body forever and on my lower forearm I want it to be legible. And not just say yes to her poorly drawn up rendition of mine just so I can stop being picky . She was irritated that I wanted it to be like the photo I showed her. After trying to get that fixed someone came in after us and picked an easy design from one of the books. When we said we were ready she made us feel bad for taking long so we had to wait for the next artist. She told us how much it would be and then we met our tattoo artist. He was fantastic though and that was the only pleaseant experience that came from masterpiece tattoo. While we were finishing up, my mother and I had both gotten two tattoos each. Taking less than 4 hours to complete the woman behind the counter came into our room and said to our tattoo artist you have lost us 3 customers for taking so long, when will you be done? We were so surprised on how unprofessional and rude that was. After we finished our tattoo we got all wrapped up and ready to go. We then go to the counter and the lady tells us it s going to be $200 dollars more than what she originally told us. then went on to yell at me saying it was my fault because I took so long ....... me, the person sitting in the chair getting a tattoo... apparently it was my mother and I s fault. She then got her husband who I believe is the owner of the shop to come and try to stick up for her even though he did not see her many failed attempts at drawing a simple tattoo of a kite was also blaming me and my mother. He also didn t see her extreme attitude and eye rolls we got. Between my mother and I we have 2 half sleeves and about 20 other tattoos. Never have I ever been treated so poorly or with such disrespect. I would NEVER recommend this tattoo shop to anyone.

One random day I decided I would get a tattoo to honor my mother who had recently passed. I walked in off the street and the lady behind the desk was so helpful and friendly! The guy who did my tattoo was kind (even though my friend who was with me had to take a break because she was freaking out and almost passed out ) and he did an awesome job. He even suggested adding some colorful shading which added time onto our session but it was a great idea and I could not be happier with the result.

Also! There was a very sweet older dog in the shop which made me very happy. If I ever get another tattoo I'll definitely come back here and bring a toy for the pup .

I went to masterpiece to try & get a custom tattoo. I saw Dan who appeared to be the proprietor.
I showed him a picture I found on the internernet that was as close as I could find to what I wanted, to give him something to go on. I tried explaining further what I was looking for and he said, "have you gone on our website and seen my worK?" I said yes. He replied "don't worry about it, it'll look real" BTW $175.00 deposit was paid. I should've known and gone with my gut. Don't take my word for it, look at his portfolio. Some of the work is good but do you see anything that sets him apart from anyone else? With his inflated ego apparently he does! after I told him I didn't like the sketches we went back & forth a little and I said I'm concerned by looking at this very crude outline that this is going to be what I wanted. He said "it's just an outline that I work off of, not the final tattoo" I said I understand that but I'm not an artist and I can't envision this being anything like I was trying to convey to you by the looks of the sketch. He went on again about it being a rough outline and it wasn't the final product, I said well if you put that on my arm I want it to look realistic. He said, well I don't know if I want to do it now because you wan't be happy with anything I give you. So I said where does that leave us with the deposit. He told me it was for the time he put into it. at that point I was pissed and said $175.00 for that?!? it looks like a kid drew it!!! end of conversation.... I may take him to small claims just so he knows he can't do this type of crap to people! If I could give less than one star I would!

I understand there are new owners here from other reviews. I met Matt about a month or two ago discussing some ideas I ve had for quite some time. I ve always been interested in body art over the years but never took the chance. I am a creative person and wanted to collaborate. I made it clear I was being thoughtful about the decision and he was able to answer some questions for me.

After I mocked up and created what I was looking for, I returned due to his courtesy and some work he showed me. Matt made me feel comfortable for my first inking. He had some helpful suggestions and made the experience enjoyable. Pain wasn t nearly as bad as I was expecting. I really enjoy the final result and it s pretty close to my original vision. My first experience with body art was a big deal for me and Matt s shop helped. Several compliments so far.

With new ownership comes changes. I m sure they can improve the space management and work area. I wish them the best of luck and may return in the future for more ink.

Loved this place! Got my first tattoo here about 2 weeks ago. All of the staff and tattoo artists were extremely friendly. Since it was my first time getting a tattoo I was not really sure of the process but Dan the owner helped me out and I showed him the pictures and he said he would assign an artist to me and I should receive a call in about a week. Since it was a custom tattoo I had to put a cash deposit down. I received a call just as promised and that same day I went to go look at the sketch. The sketch was by far much more awesome then I could ever think. This place is great, the final tattoo turned out to be absolutely perfect and it was done with so much detail and skill. I would recommend this place to anyone!
