Can't even begin to describe the horrible experience we had here. We arrived after waiting for 4 hours at Beth Israel BECUSE they said their ER is empty. Got here after 10min, no one here that's true - but no doctors either. When asked the receptionist when can someone see my friend she started screaming. I was stunned. That was the first time I even spoke to her and she just went crazy. I came believe they even let her work here, she is probably a nurse (I figured asking her for her name would not end well).

If you can - AVOID THIS PLACE.

My father has diabetic retinopathy but unfortunately has no health insurance. Per the recommendation of my father's previous ophthalmologist we tried going to Mass Eye and Ear thinking they would be able to help given his resources. My father has visited a few times already paying $500 out of pocket each time and all he gets is an assessment and a follow up appointment a few months later. No intervention whatsoever. This is what has become of our healthcare system.

Although the wait was long the doctor that saw me, Makayla McCosky, was wonderful. She was extremely thorough and treated my pain. Besides taking her time with me and doing all necessary tests, she had amazing beside manner and answered all my questions. While another doctor in a different practice dismissed my pain before (as it often happens to women of color like myself), Dr McCosky listened, examined, and diagnosed me. I would recommend her as well as Mass Eye & Ear to anyone looking for competent and compassionate care.

Good morning,

Good morning,
I came in yesterday 4/2/18 for my daughters ears to be checked. One of many things went wrong during this visit.
1. i arrived 15 minutes ahead, like i was asked to and my child was not seen until an hour later.
2. the receptionist was completely messy. running around and scrambling papers. which leads to #3
3. SHE GAVE ME THE WRONG CHILDS PAPERWORK, WHICH MEANS ANOTHER MOTHER HAS MY CHILDS INFORMATION, i have already contacted the pediatrics department and left a message and it is now 9am the next day no one not even the doctor himself has called me back.
4. she dismissed us, then calls me while i'm already in the car telling me she forgot that she needed to send my child for a hearing test.

unprofessional and unacceptable. she should have looked over her work and made sure that the paper work matched my child. but she did not.

i am EXTREMELY unhappy with this department. it was my first time bringing my daughter there. i waited an excessive amount of time just for a 5 minute meet and greet.

Due to the fact that i was given the wrong childs paperwork, this could be a law suit.
if i could give 0 stars, i would.
-a very unhappy mother. 4/3/18

In March of this year I experienced a retinal detachment while on vacation in Mexico. I was advised by doctors in Mexico to return to the US as fast as possible and get treatment. Fortunately, I went directly to the emergency room at Mass Eye and Ear. From start to finish, my experience at MEE was superlative. The triage nurse was a very effective interviewer and in a matter of minutes I received a full exam by a resident fellow in the er. He quickly identified two retinal tears, and immediately requested another evaluation by a surgical team headed up by Dr. David Wu. Despite the fact that Dr. Wu and his team had been laboring in surgery all day and it was now about 630pm, Dr. Wu cheerfully and patiently conducted a comprehensive evaluation in the early evening that same day. From his caring and sincere bedside manner, not to mention his impressive resume, I knew instantly that I was a very lucky person to be in his care at MEE. We scheduled a vitrectomy procedure for first thing in the morning. The patient is awake and somewhat sedated during this 2 1/2 hour operation, and able to listen to the doctors conversing during the surgery. I remember being so impressed by their passionate interest in both the problem and the solution, as well as the very healthy team culture that was evident from the reinforcing comments made by team members to one another. Clearly being treated at an urban specialty hospital is a great advantage, but only if the clinical team is focused, engaged, and empowered to do great things. All of that applies to my experience at MEE. And by the way, my retina is looking very healthy and we are all optimistic that the chance of additional problems are very low. Thank you everyone at MEE.

I had a very unethical experience at this place. I called in to make an appointment with an ENT. The day of my appointment the MD says she is a brain Doctor. She couldn t even bring to herself to say what she was, a psychiatrist. I booked an appointment for tinnitus and the next thing I know their big specialist for this, according to the receptionist was this woman that comes in from MGH once a month at MEE. The patient had a right to know that they are not seeing an ENT.
Don t get me wrong. I just want to be clear the patients needs to know. I assume because it is MEE I was seeing an ENT. Very untrained receptionists.
MEE might have this and that but exceptionally inept in handling tinnitus or even long term care for ENT issues. Their website is also terrible misleading about research and treatments. Once you are in the Partners share records, be aware that you might not be getting a good long term plan. Another story to tell. For this alone they deserve no start. I talked to my Partners MD about this and he said he would ve been furious.

Never had a bad experience like that before in my life, about the waiting time in any other emergency room. What is going on at the Mass General as a reference hospital????????????

Brought Mom for a scheduled appt with Dr. Cestari. Waited 2 hours to see the doc and then he popped in and out of the room--forgot paperwork, had to leave to get it, apologized and left again. He was not attentive and clearly had other things on his mind other than discussing her concerns / questions re:Strabismus surgery. Since she almost died with complications of a previous unrelated surgery her concerns were well-warranted. He clearly wanted to hurry us out to get to whatever else was on his mind. I understand other emergencies delaying appts but at least give the patients who were delayed and inconvenienced the courtesy of your full professional attention and a thorough appt-afterall they waited 4 months to see you and then hours in your office-not to mention a 2-hour ride each way to the hospital. Glad my elderly Mom had me with her to be sure she didn't get pushed out without her questions answered. Very disappointed. Mom and all patients deserve better.

I have never had a more positive experience with the medical establishment than the one I had recently at Mass Eye and Ear. I went into the infirmary Sun, May 12th of 2019 with a bad burn and abrasions caused by heat damage on both of my corneas. I was terrified and in a lot of pain. During the length of my treatment, I was communicated with respectfully, seen quickly, and was treated with compassion by literally EVERY medical professional I came into contact with. This is the second of two reviews I have written in my lifetime ( I m a lazy reviewer ;) ) but I was so moved by the professionalism and the superior bedside manner I witnessed at MEE that I felt compelled to share my experience.

Had a less than stellar initial appointment. In at 1:50 for a 2:00. At 2:30 I ask when I'll be seen. They get me in, doctor is great. They take my phone # on a post it note and say someone will call me to set up appointments for my life-threatening surgery. It's 10 days later, I have not heard from them. I called 6 days later and they couldn't find my file.

Update: Post surgery. Experience improved dramatically. Surgical staff from the guy who hands over the instruments to each of the nurses was fantastic and beyond nice. The communication on surgery day was excellent and compassionate.

Had a very bad experience with their international office, have an ongoing complaint that no one looked at for almost a month now !

But it seems that they respond much quicker when someone reviews them on google !

Tried for weeks to reach them over the phone to follow on my complaint with no answer

Arbitrary billing !

They billed my mother who is self paying, double the price that she was told before having the service (for an imaging and a clinic visit not even a procedure). Their financial office is a mess !!

It took countless phone calls plus e-mails over e-mails to arrange an appointment, and then many further ones to a bunch of different persons apparently ignoring each other, to get the reports and images of a comprehensive ocular exam.
I never got an invoice for what I ve been charged, all my request being ignored.
I had the feeling of an atomized structure where everybody rigidly performs a single action, with no interest in any other (and sometimes not even in their own), lacking an adequate supervision and coordination and, overall, the due respect toward the client (improperly called a patient..)
Whether my experience reflects the standard of the institution or a specific attitude toward me, such an organization would appear frightening to me in case of need of any interventions different from an evaluation.

Medical providers are great and service good, except for Optical Shop where l had to wait three years for eye glasses, needed another prescription and yet another appointment for new prescription nine months ago and after three years the reading glasses were done with plastic instead of hi index or poly carbonate lenses, without antirrflective coding and with right lense stronger than right lense contrary to my prescriptions for 35 years. In addition Optic Store manager argued those lenses were hi index. After verification to the contrary in local optical shop and complaint filed with customer service, l have not hear from MEEI nor Shop manager regarding glasses replacement. SHAME

Awful. I went in for surgery on my NOSE and the nurses were looking at my body saying I had 17 bruises.

I wake up from surgery still groggy and they start questioning me about it immediately.
I couldn't even relax.
Isn't it illegal to discuss or look at someone's body while they are in surgery ?
I then was forced to talk to a social worker.
It's absolutely ridiculous.
Mind you, I only had two bruises (one on my leg and one on my arm from hiking)
I will never trust this place again. I've never felt so uncomfortable.
I now have to deal with the emotional stress of my family constantly claiming the doctors are correct when I said many times how ridiculous that is.

I tried calling and left a voicemail to discuss it.
I didn't receive a call back.

My husband was sent here for a detached retina on a Thursday afternoon. We left home at 4 and got back at 11 after 3 doctors did exactly the same tests. Were told to come back at 2 the following day for surgery, with nothing to eat or drink after midnight. The surgery happened at 7pm and we got home that night at 10:30. We were told to come back the following day at 8am. We were the first ones there on Saturday and as we waited, more people came in with appointments for the same time, same doctor. If you go here, be prepared to be extremely patient.

I was hesitating to go to my appointment because of the Pandemic, but I'm glad I did. At the entrance, the staff guides you perfectly, offers you a new disposable mask and hand sanitizer, the check-in desk has installed safety shields (safety dividers) serving as unobtrusive barriers that provide an additional layer of protection. In the waiting room, the chairs available for seating are 6 feet apart. Everything perfect!

Every interaction from the front desk to the receptionist and nurses was miserable. ER staff working on 08/17/20 during the evening shift was not friendly at all. No empathy towards patients whatsoever. They don t check your chart or anything! Blonde nurse gave me the phone number to Spaulding rehab, instead of Mass Eye and Ear! Makes me suspect this institution has many medical errors. Charge nurse was more concerned about watching sports while working than helping patients. Also witnessed the charge nurse berate a disabled patient in front of me for no reason. Very poor communication. Did not verify medical history or perform any medical reconciliation. When asked any questions at all they just roll their eyes and sigh. Is this really a Harvard affiliated hospital? Unbelievable. What a pathetic crew

Excellent doctor's, compassionate care, wonderful service & I couldn't have ask for care. Most grateful!!
For those folks with less than a wonderful customer service experience, sometimes expectations can be over the top. And to rate a top US hospital negative because of a service incident, that's harsh and an inappropriate methodology of evaluation!!. And, some people are simply negative and that's just what they see.. No, I'm not associated with MA Eye & Ear. However, reading some of these low rated evaluations, I found them, and with no disrespect, with poor acumen.

I went to Mass Eye and Ear because they are the preeminent hospital for eye diseases and injuries. I received cataract surgery in both eyes and then cornea transplants in both eyes (one at a time). My doctor, Ula Jurkunas, was extremely competent, did flawless work, and gave me beautiful results. She was also a very nice person. I couldn't have had a better experience and I feel so blessed to have been treated by such a preeminent specialist. I wouldn't think of trusting my eyes to anyone else.

I am 47 Years old and I have been coming to M.E.&E. since the mid 90s. M.E.&E. I have gotten my eye glasses and contacts here since I started coming here. But yesterday I was told by the Optical dept. they don't take my insurance which is Celticare. I was told my vision had worsened, and that I need new glasses. Without insurance, my eyeglasses are over $500. My prescription is very high, and it will be very difficult to find a place that will be able to handle my lenses the way M.E.&E. has.

I really wish the actual doctor or physician would spend a little bit more time reading the patients medical history and learning all they need to know before jumping to conclusions and coming up a with a better plan for the patient. I felt at my appointment that a lot of these so-called physicians don't spend enough time and they just spend the necessary 5 minutes and they are off to the next patient without enough time to fully explain the pro's and con's of things. That is why they have things on the internet like WEBmd. Because us patients who don't know fully medical jargon know what to expect. I really thought this hospital did a 360 when they renovated the hospital but even the patient relations office is just as bad.I had my son come here to get tube in his ear and it was bad then staying overnight and dealing the incomponent nurses and doctors let alone when I come here for a dr appointment. I wouldn't recommend this hospital at all to any of my love one's.

I just had strabismus (double vision) correction surgery by Dr. Dean Cestari and cannot say enough good things about the experience. The staff was caring, congenial, and upbeat. Dr. Cestari was clearly an expert in this field and was open and positive through every visit. Even though I know this procedure is done thousands of times at the hospital I felt treated as an individual for whom a completely perfect outcome was desired. I can find nothing negative to say about MEEI.

I'm a professor at MIT. I had sinus surgery (turbinate reduction and septoplasty) about a year ago at MGH. The surgeon, Dr Sedaghat, kept on saying you'll breath so much better after the procedure... well, my right nostril is now completely clogged, which wasn't the case before. Worse, MGH had no clue about what happened (Dr Sedaghat just said he must have made a mistake and that my case was mysterious because the passages were wide open according to him). I was sent to another specialist at MGH (in plastic surgery) who simply told me it might improve. It was nine months ago. And I hasn't. No follow up appointment since. He also told me it is probably my perception, but not reality! I was in France this winter. I had very basic air flow tests done at the hospital. These tests showed my breathing capacity was three times below the minimum on the right side, and almost no airflow in decubitus. This allowed doctors to identify two problems: a too big right inferior turbinate and a high deviation of the septum (the French surgeon told me MGH surgeon was "lazy"). I will undergo another operation there. The tests were not even considered at MGH. Other major problem: I mentioned bad reactions to morphine and they still used a massive dose for anesthesia,
which made me very sick (though morphine was actually not needed according to the surgeon I consulted in France). I spent the day in the post-operative room with unbearable nausea. What MGH gave me didn't help at all. When I went back home, I took a pill of Dramamine, the most basic OTC anti-emetic medication. Nausea went away in 20 min! Last, MGH staff treats you like a number. The Sinus Center staff was hardly polite, and you reach a voicemail when you have a question. I wanted to receive my file (to know which anaesthesia procedure was followed). It took me two months and dozen of calls and faxes. I eventually had to go to MGH, the Sinus center sent me to another staff division, which promised to send me my file. They never did. I had to go back and was finally sent to an basement office, with two nice employees who accessed my record and gave me my file. Really poor service, and awful experience in all respects.

On December 28th, I had to visit MEEI ER as my cochlear was not working. The staff were professional and unfortunately they could not determine why my cochlear was not working. As I sat in the waiting area, I could not help but notice the TV had no Closed Caption "cc", a hospital that treats people with hearing problems I thought this was disappointing. Please consider putting the cc on the TV's in waiting areas in your hospital, you will be doing the deaf patients a favor!

When we arrived at hospital my boyfriend asked the security guard at front desk regarding valet parking, the security guard said, we could park our car outside the entrance, which we did. After three hours when we were leaving, I had a ticket on my car from Boston Police for $90!!! I should make the security guard pay the parking ticket as he told us we could park our car outside the door!

Overall I love MEEI, but having a $90 ticket on my car was not a good experience, we could have easily parked in garage given valet parking isn t offered on weekends! Why doesn t the hospital offer valet parking offered on weekends?

Pros: Well run, very organized, respectful ED. Got seen and treated in the same day, so big stress and time saver. Cons: No written discharge instructions at all, despite having a pretty major procedure. Expected better after care and follow up.

I knew while working in Boston, that having my strabismus looked over at Mass Eye and Ear was the answer. With a place like MEE, it is obvious that Dr. Cestari and team exceeded all expectations from my first visit to my last follow-up. Pro: A gorgeous facility, world-class attending doctor that was generous and kind. Someone always answers the phone. Doctors explained everything.

Con: Horrible outcome and a huge bill. You pay for residents to learn on you. They don't operate at night? I owe $60k on an eye that is now practically blind. I would give my surgeon 5 stars. I had total confidence that my case would be fixable, but I wouldn t call it a success story.

He needed surgery, and the surgical staff was beyond amazing. Not only did they play with him and make him feel super comfortable but after he went under a nurse walked me up the the waiting room holding my hand and wiping my tears assuring me he was in good hands.
When he was in recovery my husband and I walked in to a nurse holding my baby, rocking him and singing the Beatles. She had no idea we were there watching. It made me feel so overwhelmed with emotion that a complete stranger would treat my child like her own. I couldn't be happier meei.

This was my first visit to Mass Eye and Ear. I had went to urgent care and they sent me to MEEI because they didn't have the resources to evaluate my eye problem. I had to go to the ED on a Saturday and had to wait 4.5 hours before seeing the doctor who had no empathy at all! After the exam my eye was worse than when I arrived! I couldn't even open it. The doctor told me that a prescription was sent to my pharmacy but when I called the pharmacy the next morning they had no record of the prescription. I called the ED and a woman said she would take my information and hopefully someone would put in the prescription. Waited all day and the pharmacy still has not received anything.
I had heard such good things about this hospital but was truly disappointed in the service.

Last week, I had an MRI with and without contrast and the experience was so much easier than I expected, The MRI technicians, Barbara and Bill, were exceptionally kind and patient with me, especially because I suffer from claustrophobia. Yes, it is small, and yes we had a long wait. 5 hours. But people who were much worse off than us went before us - as they should in an emergency ward. Triage did their job.

I was, however, happy that they have a coffee bar right there. There is a cafeteria a short elevator ride away from the waiting room, and the staff was friendly and competent.

They checked on us every so often, offered blankets or a stretcher to anyone who needed them, and we were allowed to ask where we were on the list. When we finally got in, the resident and doctor we saw gave us all their attention, did a thorough examination and even set us up with where to get further care. I felt they covered all bases during a very scary time for us, explaining everything in a way we could understand. It was busy, but we were not rushed in and out. It was a relief to have intelligent, communicative, and compassionate medical staff.

I would say they should have more staff as we would certainly have appreciated a shorter wait, but we were very thankful to know we were seeing really good doctors. I would wait again. When it is truly an emergency, what I want to know is that the doctors are exceptional at what they do.

I was referred to Dr. Dean Cestari at Mass Eye & E...

I was referred to Dr. Dean Cestari at Mass Eye & Ear because of his international reputation for being a brilliant eye surgeon with a patient and kind bedside manner. He is everything a doctor should be: a very good listener, extremely detailed in his exams and explanations and never in a rush to move on to the next patient.

I was diagnosed last year with 4th nerve palsy with no known cause (F, 59 yrs. old) Started to suddenly experience double-vision (vertical) with the 2nd image turned at an angle when looking up at traffic lights or looking straight ahead at anything more than 5 feet away. Very, very frustrating. No more skiing, biking or boating and driving was becoming problematic, even with prism glasses.

On 5/22/19, Dr. Cestari performed a strabismus/inferior oblique myectomy surgery -- non-suture, one eye only, under general anesthesia. When I woke up in the recovery room I could see clearly, straight across the room with no double-vision for the first time in over a year! No pain, just Tylenol for a tiny amount of soreness and I am a weakling when it comes to pain :)) Twelve days after surgery, I am back to wearing my contact lenses and amazed my vision has been restored 100%. When I saw Dr. Cestari at my follow-up visit today, my heart choked up in gratitude, and, I had to try not to cry happy tears!

If you are a candidate for any type of eye surgery, look no further and make an appointment. Dr. Cestari is worth the wait and when you arrive, Tatayana, his office manager, will greet you by name and with a smile. She will navigate your future visits and surgery date, all while making you feel like you are his ONLY patient. Mass Eye & Ear is exceptional in so many ways and I am will be forever grateful ! Thank you Dr. Cestari!

I has a very basic sinus surgery at the 800 Huntington Ave location that required 2 pre-op appointments and 3 post-op appointments. I thought this seemed excessive until I realized that MEE was billing every appointment as a outpatient hospital visit. The fact that they consider looking in someone's nose a "hospital procedure" is absurd. I'm now hundreds of dollars in debt because I "needed" to come back while unbeknownst to me being charged exorbitantly for 10 minute appointments. The doctor I saw was very friendly, but needs to explain to patients that the "simple checkup" he's doing is going to cost them an arm and a leg. The office is unhelpful and unfriendly, but I do hope everyone enjoys their lavish vacations at my expense.

They don't accept the most standard insurance plans in New England - I now have to submit my claim through my insurance and was forced to pay $90 out of pocket. They also can't order my contact lenses because they don't take Anthem EyeMed - so now I have to do that on my own. Absolutely ridiculous.

Dr. Wang is the exemplar of a fine doctor: incomparable expertise and skill combined with a forthright level of communication and genuine caring. In the evening after the cataract procedure on each eye, he called me at home to see how I was doing and encouraged me to come in if I had any concerns. He never was in a hurry during office visits before and after surgery despite my many questions. Most remarkably, he was fully prepared to deal with a rare complication during surgery on one of my eyes. The outcome of the cataract procedures on both eyes more than met my expectations. My eyesight is now clear and vivid, bringing my visual world alive in a way it hadn't been for a long time. As a photographer, this has opened up new avenues of artistic excitement for me. He is highly recommended!

Whoever says that healthcare in the US is no.1 in ...

Whoever says that healthcare in the US is no.1 in the world and this hospital is one of the example, then its wrong. Don't bother yourself to even go. Going to this hospital has degraded my expectation of the US on every level. So i have this problem with my eye and come there to the emergency department to get it checked. Note that i need to pay the co-pay to whatever insurance i had for $150, which is fine, i need to be checked anyway. I went there, get examine, got my blood taken and the doctor told me to follow up in two weeks. Also, she just told me this problem "is just happen" and "wait for the lab result" (i have to ask first). The medication that they prescribed doesn't really work so i called few days later to check if i can go back anyway sooner, they told me the lab result hasn't come out yet and then its pointless to comeback because they can't diagnose anyway. So i try to calm down and take the medication per usual. Its been a week, my eyes doesn't got better and i called again, now they told me to just comeback to the ER room, but without lab result, its gonna be just like the same thing ($150 for the same thing, explain me that). Also, because tomorrow is thanksgiving so i might probably not able to get the maximum treatment (another discouraging and counter-narrative idea, because they still telling me to come!). I TOLD THEM ITS FINE, I CAN JUST PAY FOR WHATEVER THE COST IS AS LONG AS THEY HAVE THE LAB RESULT BECAUSE MY EYES IS HURTING AND I NEED TO GET RID OF WHATEVER THIS IS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, JUST PLEASE, GET IT DONE SOON. But all i got is a scheduled follow up visit which is in MORE THAN TWO WEEKS!! This ended up left me with 2 choices: comeback without lab result for $150 or come on scheduled date, but only God's know how's my eyes gonna be at that time. Seems like they don't really bother if i get any emergency condition with my eye or not, though. Just get here, hand us $150 for nothing or just wait until your eyes gets severe for your scheduled date. At this point i just regretting come to the US and accepting the scholarship from the state department to study here if only i knew its gonna happen. It wasn't the first time that i have this problem, but in my third-world developing country, i always recovered in less than 5 days. Also, i never wait for more than 2 weeks for my lab result, ever. I just don't understand that the self-proclaimed the best healthcare in the US (or the world) take 2 weeks for a lab result and doesn't come up with any alternative during the waiting period. God bless America.

Very bad experience today with the customer service. We ve been waiting in the MEEI Emergency Room for a little over two hours today. We saw a few people (like 6 or 7) come and go so we decided to ask how many people were ahead of us. The young lady said one. After she told us that, there were four people called ahead of us. I m assuming that everyone could ve been been at lunch at the same time but that is unacceptable. Everyone else that was here before us was seen promptly. The ladies at the desk were loud and making smart remarks saying that there is no time limit here . Wasn t a good experience.

We were so impressed by Dr. Setlur and all the staff that worked along side her. Dr. Setlur was amazing with our 5 year old when he needed surgery to have his tonsils and adenoids removed. She was completely thorough with explaining the procedure, made us parents feel very comfortable and she even came out right after his surgery to tell us herself how the procedure went. We completely trusted her with our son. We were very impressive by each and every nurse and staff member that took care of our son. We highly recommend Dr.Setlur, Mass Eye and Ear hospital in Boston and office in Concord.
