Characterful hotel, highlights for me were the stunning lobby, stylish rooms, comfortable beds and helpful reception staff. Good location too - plenty of places to eat, drink and shop nearby and walking distance from BART and cable cars. Lowlights: some parts of the hotel are starting to show their age (awkward bathroom layout; super slow elevators; room blinds kept breaking) and the restaurant (Scala's) didn't seem interested in serving me coffee and breakfast (yes they were busy, but I was standing around for 10 minutes without an acknowledgement). Thankfully there are many good cafes within walking distance! I'd probably give it another chance in a year or so as they are refurbishing some parts.

Had to wait forever for any of them. Had to take the stairs a few times even though I was kn the 7th floor.

The location of this hotel is great, and the staff was friendly. However, during our stay the fire alarms went off 2 times. The first time we walked down all 18 flights of stairs only to be told that there was no emergency and that we could go back to our room. The next time it went off at 2 am. We once again started down the stairs only to hear again that it was a false alarm. Why did it keep going off? Also this is out of their control, but the protestors at the nearby hotels were pretty disruptive. We could hear them from 7 am-10 pm every day. We couldn't sleep in and thought it was pretty disruptive. It would have been nice to have been told in advance about this.

Been coming here for 6+ years and always feel like a queen here. Some complain about the small rooms and tiny bathrooms. Hey, small is beautiful and very SF. Love the pet friendly, eco consciousness too. If you need more room go to Texas.
Love the lovely Queens in the Starlight room too!

Visited this establishment during our visit to SF whilst on our honeymoon - A $200 a night room gets you some grotty/dated room on 7th floor with a shower of cold water, a TV (minus the remote control), a bathroom the same size as the wardrobe (not joking) and plug sockets which are waiting to electrocute you at the slightest touch.
The room offers an array of warm wine and beer due to the lack of fridge but could be an excellent way to warm up after your freezing shower.
The aircon is stuck at 75-80o (needed after the shower) but is accompanied by a constant lawn mower humming sound, excellent when you are suffering with jetlag and desperate for a decent nights sleep.
Finally you wake up craving for a lovely breakfast...oh wait... That's not included in the $200pn. Excellent.

The rooms were nice and very clean. Everyone I interacted with was extremely nice and professional. The bed was about average for a good hotel. The lack of a mini fridge was a little frustrating with the huge portions at some of the great restaurants nearby.

Small rooms, poor WiFi, front door staff very friendly, but front desk, bar and concierge are unapproachable.
Had a staff member insist upon come in to "inspect mini bar" hours after check in and treat me like I stole something.
Looked for Concierge for an hour before she returned, front desk told me they could not help (it was for a basic set of directions)
Garbage like this plagued my experience.

I m currently staying here and the noise from the protesters outside the hotel is horrendous to say the least from 6.45am till 10pm banging drums and using megaphones, whilst I know it s not the hotels fault this has been going on for a few weeks and it would of been nice to have been told in advance so we could of booked another hotel.... the hotel and staff are great but very disappointed at the situation

It was a VERY high end place, which gave me a taste of what other hotels existed, besides holiday inns. When we arrived, there was a problem with our reservation, and the manager gladly helped, and even upgraded the room. The only two things I didn't like was that the bathrooms were "New York bathrooms" and were very tiny, and despite it being an upgraded room, it wasn't much bigger then a normal holiday inn room. If you look past those two flaws that shouldn't reflect the staff, it is a very nice hotel with staff that is every bit as friendly as you would except for such a price. If you're going to San Francisco, I would highly recommend staying at "The Drake".

The hotel is very good. Clean, great staff. Good shops all around. Rooms are small but the hotel is vintage and thats just how rooms were made 90 years ago. It was said to be the second hotel in the area. They are very meticulous about reno's that the vintage decore remains in tact. Temp control in the rooms are perfect. Lobby bar and Starlight room are the some of the highlights of visiting SF.

Visited this establishment on our honeymoon - a throughly disappointing experience for the whole 3 days. The $220pn room gets you a dated, smoke smelling boudoir like room on 7th floor right near the lifts. Brilliant.
The bathroom is the same size as the large wardrobe with a shower that sprinkles out lukewarm water but to greet you out of this unwelcoming bathroom is a wide array of wines and beers, all of which are boiling hot as there seems to be a lack of fridge and central heating stuck between 70-80o.
In the corner of the room is a TV with a lack of remote control but helps the room to perhaps look less boudoir like.
Our Martini glasses of now 3 days have been sitting patiently on the bed side table, desperate to be taken away from this god forsaken room.
The only thing to look forward to is a nice breakfast...oh wait ... That's not included in the $220pn room.

For as fancy as it is I was expecting the bed to be more comfortable. The bed was extremely firm. We were on the 19th floor and could hear the night club upstairs as we were trying to fall asleep. Fortunately I brought ear plugs. However, the view was beautiful and we were in a great location.

The hotel is a lovely building and had excellent holiday decor. The Scalla restaurant had excellent food and service as well. We booked a private event, and the private areas were nice and well attended to. The bar upstairs was busy, but we had several booths which gave us space to socialize. The music was less to our liking, and the bar took a very long time to prepare our drinks unfortunately.

Comfortable and nicely situated accommodation right in the heart of downtown San Francisco.
My wife and I spent our wedding weekend here and were satisfied with our overall experience. Staff were friendly and courteous, our room was cleaned promptly daily and the hotel was even kind enough to surprise us with a bottle of champagne in our room for when we returned from our wedding.
The only real downsides were the long waits for elevators and steep $100 per night deposit.

Wonderful hotel--the concierege and the front desk is staffed with some of the most friendly, helpful people I've met in the lodging industry. The look of the hotel is reminiscnet of classical San Francisco, which greatly adds to the whole experience of a trip to SF. The location is also fabulous--its proximity to Union Square is a wodnerful additiotion to its overall charm. The bell hop uniforms a little ridiculous though, but overall an enjoyable experience.

Such a wonderful and welcoming stay at this hotel. Amazing service, bars and restaurants within the hotel. This hotel is in a very central location in the city(unique area n square). Everything is within walking or uber distance. Rooms were a little small but very clean and comfortable for the price. Your only there to sleep and not hang out in keep that in mind. I would definitely stay there again and I recommend anyone todo as well.

Our room was above the gym, but we didn't know this. When we heard these very loud sounds that actually rumbled our room, we complained. The Front Desk that evening claimed they couldn't figure out what the sounds could be. They recommenced at 5am in the morning but this time as I listened over and over I thought I recognized the sound. At check-out later that morning, when I complained again about the sound starting up again, the front desk clerk knew immediately that I was hearing the weights being dropped. What a disappointment that a hotel that was charging a small fortune would be so disingenuous in their response.

Had drinks hotel lobby bar, which is a cool lobby bar. Friendly and attentive bartender. Also did lunch at Scala's in the hotel, which I have eaten there many times and it is always delicious. Their risotto is delicious and probably about the best I have had anywhere. Great location too. I haven't stayed at the hotel in a few years, but the rooms aren't great as I recall, but clean. Just a bit outdated and small as I recall.

When we arrived for the check in, they didn't have our room. So they moved us in another hotel and we had to sleep one night in the other hotel. Then, the next day, we came back to the Kimpton hotel and they told us that we could have an upgrade of the room because of the inconvenience of the day before. So they proposed us the junior suite at the 3rd floor and we accepted happily. But after, they gave us the key to the room and it was on the 8th floor and the room was quite small! Not only they made us change hotel, but they didn't give us the right room neither!
I'll start by saying, this hotel is very beautiful...
I'll start by saying, this hotel is very beautiful in the lobby, their club, and has the perfect location, but the good stops there. The man at the front desk (Alonso) was rude when we checked in and rude every time I approached him afterwards asking when the room would be ready. Luckily someone else talked to me and checked me in (what was Alonso waiting for?!). The room was so underwhelming; it lacked basic amenities like a fridge, coffee maker in the room, and a mattress that doesn't feel like it's an original from when the hotel opened in 1928 (but they did have a used yoga mat..the most coveted amenity...) The mattress was bad, like painful to move the next morning bad. We switched rooms to see if it helped and no, another 1928 original. We encountered Alonso one more time before we left and he still had the same pompous, unwillingness to be helpful attitude. I think he was the only bad egg in the bunch because housekeeping and concierge were super nice.
Anyway long story longer, don't stay here unless you like paying alot for literally nothing and you already have a massage appointment made for the toll these beds will take on your back. If I hadn't prepaid for my room I would have left after the first night and shaved Alonso's beard on my way out; maybe it would have made him feel less powerful thus, making him nicer.

Excellent hotel selected by my company as their preferred provider in SFO. Room is well kept and despite being an old building it is well maintained and well upgraded with modern amenities. Simple perks like a coupon for refusing cleaning service daily are a nice perk. If driving nearby parking garages are cheaper than the valet only options at the hotel.

The hotel is pretty nice, the lobby styling is amazingly ornate and the rooms are well layed out and comfortable. It's pretty much what I expect from a Kimpton.
The restaurant, Scala, is also good, I was given a handful of $10 off coupons at check in which made it a bit easier on the wallet since it is expensive.
I'm only rating 4 stars for a couple things:
1. The elevator wait is pretty excruciating and they get uncomfortably packed due to the waits.
2. The shower heads in the bathroom aren't high enough for me (I'm 6'0) and not particularly modern.
