Beautiful 150 year old hotel only a ten minute walk from the museum area. Well outfitted rooms with large bathroom that includes both a great shower and bathtub. Views are compromised due to renovations, but they will be completed within a year. Very kind and helpful staff. Would definitely stay again.

Very luxurious hotel only for the well-to-do people who can afford it.
A nice, classically decorated building with a bit of a royal look and nice location on the Amstel, where the hotel was once named after

Went to La Rive for dinner. The tasting menu was incredibly well put together, and the wine pairings were amazing as well. The ambient was excellent. The restaurant had a view of the Amstel river which made it pretty charming. Everything about the evening was perfect. The service of course was excellent, and is the best I've ever had, anywhere. Although some might say that the experience is pricey, you get everything you pay for here. It might very well be one of the best restaurants in Amsterdam.

We wanted to have our wedding here, the communication is terrible, your mail is not answered. And if they finally answer after 4 weeks, they don't even apologize. Agreements I had made with the employee were canceled because she no longer worked there. Very crazy! It is not at all a 50 star service you expect. Then you don't want to spend thousands of euros here either.

Nice location, with good service, if you look as expected. Poor communication between staff and management, as a result of which you as a guest are very disadvantaged and disturbed during your stay. For example, we were unable to execute an appointment made on paper, while this was promised. As an excuse we were guilty of this, good service! In addition, the staff and management have little respect for the guests and they strive for their own ego. Everything must go perfectly for them and not for the guest. You do not feel at home and you get the idea that they determine and organize what your experience should be like during your stay. In short, not treated like a human, but like a robot that needed an update. I never come here again and do not appreciate the way they act.

I just checked into this hotel and I am giving this hotel a 1 star. I arrived at this hotel with 2 very heavy bags a heavy book bag and a small shoulder bag. I was sadly disappointed that as a guest, no one was available outside to assist me with my luggage. After sweating and juggling up a flight of stairs with my luggage, once inside I was then approached by a bell man asking did I need assistance. I was so upset that I kept my mouth closed because I was tired and sweaty. Furthermore I was greeted by Kimberly who I complained to about my luggage but all I received was an apology in which I felt was not sincere at all, very robotic. To give her the benefit of the doubt she was not the manager so maybe it was out of her scope to do something for my struggles but I do feel strongly it is within her scope to advocate on my behalf and communicate with management on my luggage situation. Nonetheless with a very bright smile I indicated to Kimberly that this was my first time in Amsterdam and I decided to stop here for one day. I requested as a Spire Elite member could I be provided a complimentary upgrade to a suite if available. She made a phone call and stated to me that she does have a suite available for only an extra charge of a $150 Euros extra I may have it. I was a little surprise she replied with this as I have never been offered an upgrade with a fee associated with it. She then indicated to me that I booked my reservation using points and because of that I am not entitled to the same benefits. Once again this was news to me since I had just booked a night under points in Paris at a boutique Hotel Indigo IHG property and was provided a Junior suite upgrade with no issues. I replied to Kimberly that I was only staying one night and all I want is a nice room upgrade if possible and now that I know you have it may I be provided the upgrade. She refused kindly and I suggested I speak to a manager. A Bonny came out who I am not sure if she was a manager or not but she was the one who decided to discuss with me further on my concerns and needs. Immediately Bonny made reference to me booking with points and me not being a Ambassador. She stated if I had the Ambassador membership I would be guaranteed an upgrade but because I am only Spire Elite those benefits at her hotel are not available under points. I explained to her that through the IHG website and on paper it indicated that a complimentary room upgrade is part of the benefits. I must say Bonny and the hotel made me feel very insignificant. Apparently Spire Elite at Intercontinental means nothing and ones loyalty to the IHG brand is irrelevant. No one even thanked me for being Spire Elite or offered me an Spire benefits. Nonetheless the communication back and fourth continued with me and Bonny as she continued to make me feel even more insignificant as her staff watched me be denied benefits. She eventually said as a courtesy she will offer me a river view instead of a city view. I replied just please check me in I am so tired and frustrated right now and I don't have the energy. I maintained my professionalism but Bonny just kept making shots at my status. She even inappropriately asked "oh so what other hotels have you stayed at?" What do you do for work?' I guess if you are not walking around with millions of dollars or White in color then you are nobody. I do not like to throw the race card but as CEO of my own company and Heavy IT consultant, i have invested over hundred thousand dollars between various hotel chains and never have I felt so insignificant at a hotel. Let us not forget the alleged manager Bonnie was aware of luggage struggles and offered nothing. She did so inappropriately offer Ambassador membership at a heavy fee to upgrade me to a suite. SMH...simply ridiculous. In the states no such thing like this would have occurred. I think after this experience I am done supporting this IHG brand. They are simply not loyal, Marriott, SPG & Hilton Worldwide would never have treated me like this. I can't stress enough to save your time & money!

Just wow! The hotel is even nicer than the photos and the staff are really friendly and helpful. We even got a soft drink while we checked in. Our room looked over the Amstel and we watched the boats going by. The concierge was great and helped us organise our visits with tickets and directions to the windmills.

The Amstel is old world luxury. It is an institution being the oldest hotel in Amsterdam and I was lucky enough to stay with them on their 150 year anniversary. In commemoration, they were restoring the building to it's original glory. Other reviews I've read noted being bothered by the construction noise but I never heard anything nor was bothered. Upon arriving, I was offered help with my bags and guided up to my desk for what felt like a more intimate check in experience and then escorted to my room. The attendant explained everything in my room to me and was delighted to offer any help I needed from dinner reservations to sightseeing recommendations. They had placed me on the highest floor with a river view overlooking the city. The hotel isn't in party central but plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops are within walking distance. The room was sizeable with a beautiful view out the window. Summer in Amsterdam is a sight to be seen from above with passing boats, people walking the streets, and at night, dazzling city lights. The bathroom had a large bathtub, separate stand-up shower, and seperate toilet room. I had made plans to wait in line for the Anne Frank House but decided to soak up the views and relax in my hotel room instead. I love the old world traditions that this hotel still partakes in such as room escorting, turn down service, clothes line in bathroom, etc) Room service was speedy and hospitable, but the food seemed a hair above mediocre. This hotel is exactly what I'm looking for from a luxury hotel and will definitely stay again next time I'm in Amsterdam.

On October 6, we again enjoyed a royal afternoon tea that was perfectly prepared. The wait staff was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and correct and the 4 courses were delicious. The tea that accompanied the courses was delicious and did everything even better. At the last course, the sweet autumn arrangement was really a show piece. A feast for the eyes and taste buds. We enjoyed it and will be back next year for this "high tea" which, in my opinion, is one of the best in the Netherlands.

We had a wonderful stay at this historic hotel! The rooms are Great- far better than you'll find in any other establishment. We highly recommend taking the historical tour as well.
The hotel also has wonderful pool and exercise services, which is uncommon among the older hotels.

Overrated. This was the worst hamburger I have eaten during the last 15 years. Horrible. The service was also horrible. Too loud, slow and they forgot to bring forks and knives on the table. We had to wait 40 minutes (!!!) and noone offered any excuse. Fortunately, the setting is always nice, looking at the Amstel. The hiring manager needs to do a better job, I think.
