Howard Johnson Hamilton Review

Checked out within a matter of 45 minutes after finally being able to find another hotel room an hour away.

The toilet seat had not been cleaned; you could see dried up splatter all around it. There were ants and centipedes crawling around the bathroom floors/walls. The floors throughout had not been cleaned. The oversized bed , which was just a double, had hair on the pillows, on the sheets underneath the blanket and comforter, as well as entangled into the blankets and comforter.

When I called the hotel after returning home, the man I spoke to, who identified himself as the general manager, was terrible to deal with. I requested a full refund and he blatantly shut me down. I told him I would be calling corporate and he told me to do what I needed to.
After calling corporate to file a formal complaint, and following up again 7 days later after not hearing back from the GM or corporate, I was told I m only entitled to a 13% refund of what I paid in full for a room I did not use.

Howard Johnson Corporate is equally to blame as they allow hotels to be run in the state that this hotel was in. The GM must not have cared that I would be calling Corporate, knowing not much would be done to rectify this situation.

I will definitely never stay at a Howard Johnson or other Wyndham chain hotel again. Customer Service is terrible.

Room was not as seen on the website, awkward configuration where the beds faced a blank wall with zero room to move around. My kids did not feel safe and we ended up leaving and going home. Would NOT recommend unless you want to rent by the hour.

Arrived after midnight. Door to room did not work; staff spent 30 minutes fixing it while I was in hall waiting. Room was hot like a sauna, radiator on full blast with no in room controls. Open window and AC made it just uncomfortably hot after another 30 minutes. Room alarm clock was 15 minutes slow. When I mentioned these issues at checkout, staff did not bat an eye. Better than sleeping on the street.

I'm typing under my friends name. I'm a mother of two who goes to this hotel regularly with my kids. First of all I have to defend this hotel I can't believe all the bad reviews. Second I'm very allergic to bed bug bites so there is no way they got bed bugs that B'S. I stayed there last night. I do love the staff they are nice. They offer smoking or non smoking rooms. Flat screen TV in each room. But just one jacuzzi room... my slice of heaven. The breakfast is ok, I can't complain it's free. I recommend more blueberry waffle mix for the waffle maker lol every time I go it's plain waffle mix. The rooms I've had heater/air conditioner. I've been going there for about 6 years before it was Howard Johnson, used to be days Inn.

For one night it was ok, but for a longer I prefer a better hotel.
The room was big enough, 2 full sized bed but really dark.
When we look out the window there was a wall

The rooms are super small. The bathroom door cannot open all the way as it hits the bathroom sink. The carpets are dirty and the wallpaper was peeling. There is no mini fridge, and I think the window air conditioner was most likely from the late 70s and did not cool down the room...at all. No air circulation made it stuffy. It should have been $50 per night, and not $150. The staff, however, were very friendly and courteous

The worst motel, I would give zero star if I have such choice, the room is dirty, smelling(urinating), dirty carpet, bathroom is dirty old rusty bathtub, base on what I had stay in HJ in Las Vegas I will never stay in Howard Johnson again, the worst management.

The first thing we noticed is that the bed linens did not look as if they had been changed, but had instead been smoothed out.

We woke with bed bug bites.

The floors were dirty and there was a ring around the tub.

No parking.

Check-in was great at 130 a.m. nice people and convenient WiFi connection and breakfast

In the morning you can find this hotel's usual patrons outside the nearby McDonald's. Clientele I've spotted include two women in their late 40s dressed as My Little Pony and other folks who look like they paid by the hour. Enter at your own risk.

Worst hotel, don't ever consider staying.
- Ultra small rooms.
- Electrics and fittings are quite old style.
- Poorly maintained.
- Un reliable WiFi connection.
- No parking, you will have to carry all luggage by yourself into the from few meters (where taxis/cars can be parked).
- All facilities, furniture, are worn out.

This was a great budget hotel right downtown, perfect for going to a concert at Budweiser Stage. Our group had 2 rooms on the first floor, and one on the second. The rooms on the first floor were a great size and had fridges, the one upstairs was very small with one double bed and no fridge (but was a much cheaper rate). The rooms were clean and the beds were more comfortable than my new bed at home!

Took 2 days and 3 times of telling them the shower curtain rod kept falling down for then to fix it. When they came to fix it they took packing tape and a Styrofoam plate to fix it.
Parking was 5.minutes away and when I.called because the pay station wasn't working they couldn't tell me who owned the parking lot.

During Caribana I stayed at this hotel for a small period of time. This place is a great budget saver and litterally a 5 minute walk away from the TTC and nice boardwalk by the lake. The staff (June and Stephanie specifically) were also very curtious and professional and didnt hesitate to accommodate when asked.

What an absolute joke. How does this have almost 3 stars?? Where do I even begin? There's no parking. You have to park off site, and make a 6 min walk to the hotel, AND you have to pay for parking. Inside is a total dump. No elevator. Room was barely big enough for the bed. By far, the WORST place I've had to stay.

Very convenient to Toronto Transit stops. Parking is a 5 minute walk away. Not a luxury hotel but we stayed 3 nights and found it clean and quiet. Free breakfast. If you want a place to sleep while in Toronto, I recommend this hotel.

Tiny room was okay but the closest parking was 4 blocks away.

TERRIBLE HOTEL AND TERRIBLE STAFF AND WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND STAYING AT THIS HOTEL EVER! DON'T RECOMMEND HOWARD JOHNSON AT ALL AFTER THEIR LACK OF ASSISTANCE ON A CHARGE THAT IS COMPLETELY FALSE!Small dirty hotel and in a terrible area with a lot of shady people walking around at night. not a safe place. The hotel also likes to charge you an extra 200 to use their rooms and lay claim that you smoked in them even if you had not. They then refuse to do anything for you if you happen to catch the charge on your account.

There is no parking. There are druggies outside!!! If you book online they do not refund you. The employees do not speak English!!!! DO NOT STAY HERE. DO NOT BOOK HERE. We didn t even make it inside! Not good for people with handicaps. There is no elevator and if you want to park you will have to walk very far.

Awful hotel. Stains on the sheets and walls. Power cords plugged into extension cords that dont support grounding pins. Cracks in the ceilings. No parking. Parking is at a residential apartment down the street in their visitors, 10 min walk away. Key card locks on stairwell doors that don't work. Not safe to stay here. DO NOT STAY HERE.

We booked a king bed through Expedia when we got here they told us it hotel is under renovation and they only have a room with 2 double beds which is an upgrade from a king... well not for a married couple on a night away from the kid. Then they did find us a king bed but in a smoking room. There were at least 5 holes in the wall. The window in the bathroom was left open so the room was cold and there is no heating controls. The window in the bedroom was cracked and let cold air seep through. They also dont have a parking lot so you have to drive park and walk 5 minutes back. I've been to a couple Howard Johnson's and they ate not 5 star hotels but this one was absolute garbage

This place had clean rooms and friendly staff you get what ya pay for ill deffinetly stay here again

Room was dirty, holes in the wall, smelt so awful you had to hold your breath, original room was the size of a tiny bathroom, sheets stained blankets looked like they never been washed, dirt piles hidden behind the dresser, free breakfast consisted of stale cereal bread bagels, cream cheese and milk was sour, the people that hung around at night would make you sleep with your phone ready to call 911. Horrible staff, disgusting dirty hotel, my personal advice don t ever stay here. Gives Howard Johnson a bad reputation... yuck

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE dirty filthiest place I've ever stayed !!!! Will not stay at a HOWARD JOHNSON''s again. BED BUGS in all 3 rooms they tried to put us in, then they said it was probably our fault we brought bugs in OK smart frigging BUGS got under mattress layed eggs etc,,,,,,, I'm sure they know the life cycle of BEDBUGS, it was freezing cold had to call and they control the heat, smell of smoke/weed in hallways GROSS, rooms filthy dirt, contential breakfast was pathetic,,,,,, I RATE THIS PLACE 0. it should be SHUT DOWN

Granted the location is good but I stayed two days and for the price I was very disappointed. Room was small and dark and dusty, bathroom could use more cleaning. I doubt the sheets were changed either. And that smell.... worst hotel.

Absolutely DISGUSTING! And worst of all Bedbugs
I checked in after 6 PM so they charged the full stay to my credit card, went up to the room, pulled the sheets back and immediately found bedbugs. I took a dead one down to the front desk and asked for a refund, the guy behind the desk just kept saying "No refund, bug is dead..no refund, bug is dead". Worst hotel I've ever been to by far.

This is one of the hotels that i will never go back. I was surprised to understand from the receptionist that i got the best room in the hotel when the room was a run down. Instead of writing all the details, please find few pictures attached. They do a better job of explaining this place.

This is the worst hotel I have been in Toronto. It's old and needs retouching it's clean and that's all it's got going for it. They gave us a smoking room without asking for preference and the smell was so disgusting we didn't even go in. Parking is two blocks away in a private apartment building and it's extra cost. This is a hotel for other night stay and very low expectations. The one thing they have going for them is friendly staff.

In Toronto, you get what you pay for. I should have guessed that there was no on - site parking. Our room was just big enough for my wife and I. That said, I will probably not stay there next time I am in town.

When I arrived I waited half and hour with no one around in sight at about 6:30. After half an hour someone finally wondered in to check me into my room, which should have been the first flag and I should have just left and got a new hotel but I was exhausted from traveling all day and it was late. After checking in they they point me to my room on the 3rd floor - which they don t have elevators only stairs. Someone did help me carry my luggage up to my room which was on a smoking floor -the only one they had available apparently- but again because I was so tired I wanted to just sleep. I then go into the room and it was smaller than a European hotel room, just enough room for the bed and and little side table and a tiny desk about 2 feet away from the foot of the bed and then walls like it looked like a giant crib room because right by the bed was the walls you had to squeeze in the bed from the one open side you can fit through, no room to unfold luggage flat just standing room. It was freezing outside so I turned off the ac wall unit which was very loud and creeky, and it didn t adjust at all on or off and in one spot. I fell asleep and eventually woke up from being so hot. I put the strong ac on and even then it didn t counteract the heater that was permanently on pumping very hot air. The room was so small and stuffy and hot and I was feeling sick from the smell of cigarettes around me that I had to check out and get a new hotel after staying for a total of 4 hours. Also the two vending machines they offered -drinks and snack- only the drink one worked. The two employees I dealt with at the desk were not rude but very aloof and not at all welcoming but I will say the woman working for their house keeping is gold and she was the highlight of the whole experience. I actually decided to start reviewing because of how bad this hotel was. And I guess it wasn t really that bad like it wasn t super dirty or have bugs it was just super mediocre and disappointing and not what I expected from the pictures or from a business especially in hospitality today or even 10,15 years ago. At least the room and lobby did -appear- to be decently clean at least it was tidy and the sheets did not smell like smoke or anything bad and they do give you like 5 huge pillows for the queen bed I had which I actually really appreciated I love lots of pillows. They did also have free WiFi which wasn t super slow but there was some waiting time. Overall would definitely skip this one unless it was the only option

Stayed over for Caribana .
The pics look better than the actual place.
I will say the rooms are kind of small but they are clean , as well as the washrooms ( very neat )
On the other hand ,the AC was pretty loud.
They do have breakast in the AM though ,up till at lest 11 Am

The room had NO heat on for our arrival, NO fitted sheets on the mattress, thin sheets for blankets that look really dirty (in the middle of winter) , NO plugs for supposed lamps ..that is our only lighting and doesn't smell clean at all. This place is atrocious and wouldnt recommend it to ANYONE. absolutley disgusting.

Smells horrible, walls are paper thin and neighbours had their tv on all night. Avoid this hotel at all cost

Room smelled, was incredibly hot, window wide open with no screen and no way to turn the heat down. When we told the desk they "did" something avout it. When we came back 3 hours later it was just as hot. We ended up deciding to drive 2 hours home instead. Awful experience

We stayed there for just one night - but that was enough. We already payed the full rate for the romm and as we arrived they charged $50 on our credit card on hold. For what? We were told that this is for case of any damage or telephone More

The mattress is great, the coffee needs some work.

I stayed at this hotel for 2 days while in town for a business meeting back in October 2014. This hotel is in a quieter neighborhood with a few interesting restaurants just down the streets.

I found the staff pleasant and helpful. The room was nothing fancy but clean and comfortable. My window faced the street car yard on the West side of the building. Generally the room was very quiet during my stay. It is far from downtown (1 hour walk or 30 min street car). It is however in a good location if you are looking for something out of the way and cheaper.

In summary, this hotel suited my needs for brief business travel. I would visit again.

I honestly didn't get to fully experience this hotel but it seems nice enough for a short stay

Not impressed. Property is old and tired looking. A/C is very noisy, not worth the money.

The room was super small and falling apart. There were cracks in the ceilings and walls. It was one of those places you just feel like you're going to get mugged at if you leave your room without a weapon. I've posted pictures twice with this reveiw but it seems they keep getting removed for some reason. The only real upside to this place was the building next door was a McDonald's so you didn't have to go too far into the ghetto to find food.

If I could give it 0 stars, I would. The stay was for 3 nights in a room that could've been small enough for one person. Woke up on our final morning around 5:30 to ANTS! Ants on the bed, on the floor, in the washroom and in every corner. Needless to say, we won't be staying here again.

Location Room Quality and all other factors were superb for the price the only downside was the staff seemed slightly unaccomodating. Besides this factor I would deffinatley recommend

I was visiting Toronto from Houston and thought the motel standard should be as good as USA. This motel is piece of Junk, Dirty and smell horrible. They charges me the maximum rate since they have lost my reservation and made more money as a walk-in customer. I cannot classified it as a 1 star motel.

Worst wifi connection! small rooms and noise comming from AC and window is very loud! Staff was very good! No lift for heavy laggage. the only good thing was breakfast and staff. Very close to the lake and transportatio around town.

This is a dump. Moth ball smell throughout the hotel, holes in every wall, mold all over the bathroom, hookers and pimps everywhere, even the McDonald next door was flipping gross... Don't bring kids there, stay away

The hotel is definitely outdated and needs to be fixed up, but the price was great, free breakfast and wifi, the beds were so comfy and the room was clean. No bugs or anything weird, just some older appliances. I was hoping I'd see some paranormal activity happen throughout the night, but we were okay.

WHAT A DIVE.. Our room for one night was $269, the room was covered in stains, it smelt so bad as soon as you entered the room, we found pills on the floor, the beds were not clean, there was a hole in the bathroom wall. And we were told after being extremely disappointed leaving, that it was actually one of the nicest rooms they had. I would hate to see the ones that weren t so nice cause that is putrid. The only thing nice about this hotel is the location by the beach, ONLY THING. I will never stay at another Howard Johnson ever again, and neither should anyone else.

No parking. Hotel lobby smelled like someone was smoking. Room smelled like to many cleaning products had been used. Breakfast was not impressive.

Couldn't cancel the reservation.... Tiny rooms... The wife got the impression it was a rent by the hour type of place.

Probably the most disgusting room I've ever stayed in.... mould in the bathroom, smelled of cigarette & perfume in the nonsmoking room and no parking... all of this for only 130$/night!!!

Fauls advertising 100% we left even and booked at the Chelsy for 50$ more for rest of our vacation.

The location was great, near all the downtown resources. Everything within walking distance or a short transit ride. Rooms were clean with space and staff was great

I had a wonderful time the Staff was amazing my stay there they drove me all around buffalo to the post office CVS the grocery store and the wonderful Chinese restaurant for my Christmas holiday
Most of all I felt safe and secure with the staff and other guest
It makes it easy when you leave Canada and arrive in America where you feel at peace .
The only thing the restuarant wasn't free it was played per item

It is OK overall. Integrated window A/C very load and next to my bed. Very basic complimentary breakfast served every morning but no sink to wash fruits (sign says "Do not take food to your room"). WiFi was OK. Bathroom OK. No fridge in the room. Parking several blocks away and spot is not always available so bought week-permit from the city to park on the street.

Everyone is complaining as if they were expecting a 5star treatment for the cheapest hotel in Ontario. Low expectations when it s cheap and it s a good place. You get what you pay for. It s really just old, outdated, in a bad part of town and there s no parking. The rooms are relatively small but the staff is nice. Again - you get what you pay for. Expect a hostel type place and you ll see it s more like a motel. It is cheap cheap cheap, so expect not much not much not much

The worst hotel I've ever stayed at. The rooms were not the same as the pictures. The smell was horrible. The entire building smells like stale cigarettes and feet. There was blood splatter on the bathroom wall. The mattresses and pillows were stained yellow. One of the beds didn't even have a fitted sheet. The A/C was tiny and blew only slightly chilled air so our room was hot. It was cheaper than other hotels in the area, but it was way more expensive than it should have been. The room was so small that you could barely get by the 1st bed to get to the 2nd bed. Disgusting hotel.

Staff (front desk and cleaning lady) were helpful, accommodating and friendly.

The rooms are very, very small, they do not wash The blankets or The towel after someone else occupies it, the Asian receptionist with glasses is very rude, he almost wants to spit his face, it is only recommended for the lowest price he has, but If you have a little more than the minimum budget I recommend you better get in a better place. The experience and cleanliness is very bad there.

We have stayed here twice no some rooms clean some not so clean.some are in better condition than others. Street side is noisy back side is better. They have no parking or drop off area. They tell you to go park in apt building paid parking. It really for apt visitors not hojo customers
I know most of people working these hotels aren't from Canada. And may not know our winters. We have a really nice large room could not figure out why it got cold so fast when heater turned off. Thought the fan on heater was running all the time. Not so. Problem is the window is a single pain mesh impregnated. The cold air just flows off it. Just don't get it .
