We loved this Nature Preserve! We saw a couple of owls lots of Wildlife and then the naturalist was walking out on the trails and visited with us to point out the baby red foxes that had been running around Inside the building the grandchildren loved, loved, loved all the wildlife, fish and animals displayed. I would recommend it to any family. We brought a picnic lunch and had a very enjoyable day!

OMG! We had a Chickadee land on us today! It was an experience of a lifetime! Also saw a Tufted Titmouse on the feeder. Saw a Great Blue Heron too. Many other wonderful things. Nice walking on the new trails. We explored the prairie area - lovely. yes

Any time of year you can walk the trails and see a glimpse of Northeast Wisconsin's nature. Keep an eye out for various birds such as owls, ducks, birds of prey & water fowl. Fox, deer, squirrels, etc. It's free.

I was working as an IT contractor at RR Donnelly and I found this trail was very close. I used to walk it daily on my lunch breaks and saw all kinds of awesome wildlife including Whitetail Deer, Sandhill Cranes, Garter Snakes, etc. The wooden trail leads to a really nice educational building that has a lot of live animals on display including Sturgeon and Turtles. Take a drive, take a walk, enjoy the outdoors!

Left the reserve today and found a groundhog in distress in the parking lot and right where a car could run it over. The office attendant said she was the only person there, would not leave the confines of her office and we should let nature run its course. Never came out to investigate or show any concern. Seriously? The reserve and it's wildlife deserve much better.

Great little place with a surprisingly extensive network of trails that make you feel far more removed from the city than you actually are. Well-constructed boardwalks wind through wooded swamp, with occasional open water where one might find wood ducks and other wildlife. There are several goodies tucked away among these trails... like a blind, a large reconstruction of an eagle nest (which looked like it was meant to be climbed in), and a playground. There are also a large number of apparently resident deer that are easily spotted.

If you only have a short time, the smaller western edge of the reserve has much shorter trails that still boast some interesting things, including a stretch of open water which often hosts several species of waterfowl, a bridge spanning a small creek, and a small meadow. The staff seem to keep their bird feeders well-stocked, and Tufted Titmice are among the frequent visitors. Inside the nature center itself is a plethora of taxidermy as well as live specimens of native species. And the nice clean indoor bathrooms are always appreciated... Especially in winter!

Great trails and really interesting to place to visit several times throughout the year and see all of the changes that occur each season. Almost always deer around. My kids love the new play area. It is really impressive.

The beauty of walking through these wetlands in breathtaking. You'll often see deer in the woods, turtles assuming themselves in the pond, and enough bird species to fill a guidebook. The nature center is small yet informative, with knowledgeable and friendly staff there to answer questions.

Such a peaceful sanctuary and refuge for animals and people alike. Make sure to wear Mosquito spray, and if you have the time, bring along your binoculars to see the variety of birds & wildlife hidden throughout the Marsh.

Fantastic outdoor reserve that my family and I like to visit frequently for a nice long walk together. We always see a wide variety of animals such as deer, turkey, woodpecker, frogs, etc. I really like the wooden trail due to pushing my son in a stroller so it is a smooth walk.

A great trail, especially if you just want to escape into nature. You will see a few animals (if you're quiet), and there is a variety of plants to look at as well. A wonderful place to take the young ones for learning about flora, fauna, etc. The trails are well kept too which makes the whole experience more enjoyable.

Well kept paths. Usually see some sort of wildlife. (Deer, turtles, turkeys, geese and ducks, frogs, snakes, cranes) Several different paths to explore, through woods, prairie, wetland areas. Options for a short walk or longer, none are very long. Easy for my three year old to complete in an hour. Mostly flat. Not paved but paths are not soft - would be fine with a regular stroller or wagon. Lots of wooden walkways over the wet areas. There is a kids play area made to integrate into the natural surroundings, lots of natural things to play on. Good place for a quick outing (hour or so). Bikes are not allowed. There is a nature center but I've never been in it.

Heckrodt is an amazing oasis that is easily accessible for all. This is where I go to escape, even for a short walk, from the everyday grind. It is like stepping into a magical world where you can forget about your worries and experience and appreciate the wonders of nature.
Almost every time I go to Heckrodt I see some sort of wild life, whether it be owls, foxes, groundhogs or deer. It is natural beauty at it's finest. The staff that are working here are always friendly and helpful.
If you haven't been here definitely check it out!

Easy to find and walk trails. Very kid friendly unfortunately, you have to leave the four legged family members behind. It helps protect the reserve and the abundance of wildlife to be found there.
