So my husband and I thought we'd try out this place. We called around 5 on Saturday to try and get a reservation, but the hostess answered the phone giggling and then informed me that they didn't have any available reservations, but they did take walk ins. She said the earlier the better and promptly hung up. Not the best first impression.
We ended up getting there around 7 and we're sat right away at the "chef's table" which is the community table looking into the kitchen. We usually sit at chef's table and live the experience.. although this is the first one we've ever sat at that doesn't send out a special chef's treat or something, but that was ok I suppose.
Our server was polite when she greeted us and informed us of some of the specials for appetizers and entrees. We decided to try the grit flight because obviously it's what people go there for and a crab dip special. As well as the grilled Caesar salad to start. The crab dip special was anything but that... it was a small cast iron filled with artificial lump crab meat and heated until warm and served with basic saltine crackers, definitely not worth the money- $16 or $17 I believe. The grits were great although in the picture it shows the peaches and cream being garnished with grilled peaches, the blueberry with blueberries, the pimento with green onion, and the Brussel pesto with something but there were no garnishes at all and it just felt pretty underwhelming because we watched them through the chef's window be scooped out of the warmers on the line and brought out with little to no effort or care. The grilled Caesar was fantastic.. No complaints about anything.
All of the entrees start at $25 and up.on the right side of the menu you can pick your protein and then the way it is prepared and presented from below. We planned to try some desserts so we only went with one entree.. which our waitress seemed slightly annoyed with when she took our order. We decided on the scallops, pan roasted presentation which was a $27 entree. It came with 5 scallops served over a sweet potato hash, topped with a citrus butter. When the food runner brought the food out, he provided an extra plate for sharing. Unfortunately, all of our silverware besides one fork had been bused with the appetizer plates. My husband still had his fork, but I had nothing. We expected the server to be by shortly to check on everything and so I could request utensils to eat with... but after 10 minutes it was clear we were not getting a check back and I wasn't getting any silverware. Which is fine, we shared his fork, but if we had gotten a check back, we would've sent the food back. The hash was charred on the outside, but the potatoes were still undercooked and hard. Although charred, the scallops and hash were not even hot enough to melt the citrus butter it was topped with. The dish was cold.
By the time the server came back by, my husband and I gave her the plate and requested the check. A $70 total and we were both still hungry but just too annoyed at the quality and the neglect of the server to bother complaining or to look at a dessert menu.
Honestly, just go to husk or edmunds oast restaurant. There are too many amazing places with great service in Charleston to waste money on mediocre food.
Such a let down, we were really looking forward to it being good.
