Lovely stay, agree with the comments that the hotel is a bit tired as the decor was slightly 'shabby' in places but the staff were very accommodating and the international buffet a very good value meal option for a 5* hotel. The venue is perfect for historic Valletta.

This time only in the bar of the hotel and the year before as guests. Apart from the fact that it is funny to talk in English with German staff to then realize that it is German was the stay very pleasant. Breakfast buffet very rich and just typical Maltese but something for everyone. Room very clean. Staff as you would expect in a 5 star hotel, very competent and helpful. Who wants to do tours and does not know, goes to, Consierge, who does it to the fullest satisfaction. The pool bar is quite nice, although it makes quite early, at 6pm. Otherwise, everyone should order a NEN Angus Burger in the internal bar. It's not cheap but I can promise it's worth it. If you only order with a little bigger appetite :) We will definitely be back.

Excellent hotel, everything is fantastic: the place itself, the location, the service, the view from the restaurant, etc! I remember I had a terrible jet lag and the cloud-like bed and the freshness of the linen were my remedy. I have very special memories of my stay at La Valeta!

Nice place, very good location, amazing breakfast and good services. I don't give them 5 stars because of security deposit of 50 : it's a really bad practice not according to a 5 star hotel!! They just have my credit card number and authorization to use it: why a deposit of 50 !!?? Is not the amount, is a loss of style!

Great location on the water. With a nice pool overlooking the sea. Close to downtown Valletta. The cappuccino from the breakfast did not taste good, otherwise the breakfast was okay. I would go back there.

Spacious and comfortable rooms with very classic style decoration ... Maybe too much ... but you sleep very well, the attention is excellent, the breakfast buffet is very varied and very good and with views of the harbor.

Nice spacious room clean and comfortable with a view. Indoor swimming pool but not one for serious swimming because of the shape. Large public areas. My husband thought it was a bit anonymous and it is a big hotel but I liked it. Good position near the town. Liked the cocktails in the bar too.

Best holiday experience I have ever had. Friendliest staff, great service, nice room, superb view, great pool, both indoor and outdoor, good 'beach' (for Malta). Would 100% recommend and will be returning there at some point.

Nice hotel, comfortable rooms, reasonable menu, good location, but the 88 steps to get out of the hotel would prevent me from going back. A more frequent shuttle up the hill would have helped

OMG. First, I waited for room almost one hour. But I was not the only one. I had lucky and I get the room at 4pm. Who is the manager? Second, old furniture in 5 star hotel. Can't believe it. Third, they promised me excellent sea view. L.. My friend get the same room cheaper in the same termin in the same hotel; as I wrote above cheaper. My last visit to Malta.

The staff at the front desk very, very friendly. Operating staff especially management is not friendly. The food is bad compared to the Comino Hotel. The hotel complex is large, unfortunately the halogen lights at the delivery entrance are a nuisance. These are on all night and so the very nice and cozy lake block is a bit clouded.

We were here on our honeymoon. After accidentally booking a hotel in St. Julian's without realizing what sort of neighborhood it was we booked a room at the Excelsior last minute and it was exactly what we wanted. We took a pool-view room (worth it) and it was spacious and comfortable. Amenities and service were top notch, the staff made us feel special and well looked after.

Food was good though the menus were unadventurous, and Valletta offered much more interesting culinary options. Themed buffets were on offer almost daily from the hotel but the price was hard to justify at ~35 per cover. The continental breakfast was generous, but the pastries were small, super-market style things rather than the expected fresh-baked you would get at a bakery. If you opt for the breakfast, keep that in mind.

The fitness centre is reasonably well equipped for a hotel, and while I would have liked to have seen more cable attachments, I was able to make do and it hardly seems worth docking points over.

All in all, we plan on returning someday... Maybe for an anniversary.

Very nice Hotel, brilliant location and friendly staff. Was a bit disappointed they did not really make an effort to show the world cup matches , only one small screen which was hard to see because of the reflection from the sun. Apart from that it was perfect.

We had a fantastic stay at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Malta. The hotel is beautiful, it has a grand stair case with red carpet laid out on entrance, the staff are very pleasant and helpful. We were upgraded to a room with a partial sea view and met with a complimentary bottle of red wine and chocolates.

We ordered room service to include two large pizzas, they were delicious.

We also booked afternoon tea in the executive lounge which was a very relaxing and great experience. We were looked after very well.

We enjoyed the breakfast buffet which ran from 6.30 to 10.30am daily. There was lots of choice including traditional English breakfast, fruit, cheese and cold meats, cereals and pastries. There is a chef behind the open stove who will happily cook you an omelette of your choice, poached or fried eggs and delicious pancakes made to order.
We ordered prosecco to accompany our breakfast. We paid 7 per glass. This was a nice addition to our large breakfast.
You are able to return to the buffet as many times as you want. They provide you with a pot of tea or coffee for your table also.

Please try a pancake with their traditional.soft sweet cheese and honey. Absolutely delicious!!

We were very happy with our room. There was a bath and shower in the bathroom. The bath was so deep and therefore fully generative as opposed to typical English baths. They provide you with complimentary bath gel which we used to make a bubble bath. The bath was loaded with bubbles! The best bath I have ever had! They also provide you with hotel branded dressing gowns for use during your stay which adds to the luxury!

Rather than order from the a la carte menu in their restaurant we opted for the world buffet. If you decide to do this make sure you haven't eaten all day! The food is great but we got full very quickly as we had afternoon tea only 3 hours prior. The buffet includes a variety of cakes and sweet dishes.

There is a bar on the level above which overlooks the restaurant, with plenty of seating to choose from for smaller and larger groups travelling together.

If you haven't already, I would recommend trying their local beer, Cisk. It is very easy to drink.

Check out was simple, we just handed back our room swipe cards and settled our eco tax which is 50 cents per person per day.
We had paid up front with cash for all our food and drinks so there was no bill to settle which was great so we could get the X4 bus straight to the airport without any fuss.

Pointers for travellers to this hotel:

There are a number of steps that lead from the road to the hotel. This makes leaving with your suitcase a little difficult as it's a steep uphill climb to exit the hotel premises. Just something to bear in mind if you have large heavy suitcases.

The swimming pool is not as warm as we expected and there is no jacuzzi for free use. There is a whirlpool by the indoor swimming pool but the water is not very warm

The location is great, a very short walk from the fountain just outside the gateway leading to Valletta town which leads you to all the local historic attractions. There are lots of narrow winding roads to explore similar to Italy for example. There are a good amount of shops to pick up some presents and some great restaurants which are largely open air so you can enjoy the weather and atmosphere outside.

Well located hotel in Valletta near the centre and bus station.
Unfortunately, one hotel staff member was rude on check-in (we just wanted to know if our room was ready and she was not friendly, courteous or helpful).
The hotel seemed quite run down and did not seem to be 5 star quality. The mini-bar was empty (has to be requested a day before, which defeats the object when you arrive late).
The worst problem was that the pedal bin had a metal wire instead of a pedal and could easily cut someone.
Another problem was that the hotel had sofas outside our room in the hallway, so guests would sit there and chat early in the morning which wasn t great for our sleep.
On the whole, probably not worth the money.

Clean, but very old-fashioned. Breakfast always the same, small selection. 150 Euro security for the room are not only blocked, but also charged the credit card immediately !!!! Took 9 days to credit. This is not allowed. In addition, my credit card after my departure 50 euros, because allegedly 2 hangers are missing! Ridiculous. I pay 170 euros per night and can not buy hangers? That is embezzlement and is not accepted by me! The 50 Euro I'll get back, no matter what it costs. This hotel is really NOT recommended! Continuing in the morning from 07.00 clock construction noise in the lifts, then the night was over. In the case of my traveling acquaintances, the water in the bathroom always came up again in the bathrooms on the second floor, so that the room service had to be cleaned, or the guests dodged the toilets in the foyer.

I think I got the exact worst room in the entire hotel so my opinion may not be fair.
They serve instant coffee for the breakfast. No free bottle of water in the room. Nice gym and swimming pool (free) but you have to pay for sauna... Staff not so friendly as you would like. Very good location near old quarter.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Valetta in September 2015 and that was my best vacation in the best hotel in the world. The decor of the hotel was like a museum. I admired the statues and beautiful pictures. Best regards and thanks to the staff! It was fantastic. I will be back, Grand Hotel Excelsior, see you soon!

Very beautiful hotel with a Grand Entrance along with multiple good restaurants. The main positive point of this hotel is that it has got really nice views though at some extra cost ranging from extra 30 Euros. I loved the combination of authentic old beauty of the rooms combined with the modern facilities. If someone is fond of big rooms then this is the place for you.
The breakfast buffet is really good though bit crowdy at times due to same restaurant being used for corporate teams as well.

Overall very nice hotel, excellent service, dissent food and great location.

The 5 star hotel is located just outside Valletta - the catch is that the 10 min walk starts with 88 stairs to the road (no way avoiding those stairs if you choose to walk).

The hotel itself is very nice, the design is a bit old but that plays nice in the overall vintage-classic atmosphere of the place.

Service is perfect. The room gets cleaned twice a day, plenty is staff people wherever you go, everyone are welcome and approachable.

The food is the weakest link. Every breakfast is exactly the same, we ate there 6 mornings and nothing changed. There is only 2 restaurants in the hotel and only one of them relevant for a proper dinner and is mostly fool at dinner times.

One last small thing is that the TV in the room was lousy, bad picture (worst I've seen in ages) and bad audio. The TV brand is the hotel's which explains that.

Worth the stay, real 5 stars service and great location.

Very luxurious hotel and it has many details such as for example they put a coffee maker with milk so that you can make it whenever you want and a bottle of water per person and per day and they come twice to change your towels. They also leave a chocolate every day per person. Large rooms with a terrace, quiet and a large bathroom with a large shelf and large sink. The fridge is very cold and has a freezer. They give you towels for the pool. It is very close to the bus station. It has a free gym that is quite nice and clean. Breakfast is fine but there is no natural juice and the coffee is very bad. The worst thing about this hotel is the 88 stairs that you have to climb and then it is all uphill to the bus station or Valletta. It is not suitable for the disabled or people with a pram unless they are driving. I also did not like that they pre-collected a deposit of 350 and they warn you that if you lose a key it is 5. The taxi to the airport is 15 euros or 25 if you take the hotel service. The plugs are England type but sometimes one of ours with two pins can be connected. The private beach taking into account what is in Malta is pretty good.

A hotel with five stars. The staff are very professional and the service is at a high level. You can communicate in most European languages. The rooms need a bit of refreshing but they are still very luxurious. The beds are comfortable and clean. Bathrooms well-equipped. Good and varied food (European and local cuisine). The beach at the hotel and the pool are also clean and tidy. I think I will come back here again.

We were in this house 10 years ago and fly back next Wednesday. 10 years ago we were thrilled. It may be that the hotel is getting old - but the location - right next to Valletta is perfect. Have read that all that has rank and dignity, descends in this hotel. The best house on the square.
Came back today. Nuuuuun. From five to three stars. The hotel has decreased a lot. With a bucket of paint it is not done. Partially extremely bad. Ten years ago, two great guys opened the door for us - today there are two unmotivated dark ones, who do not open their mouths for a "good day", the toilet wobbled, the flush did not work, 1 elevator broke (long waiting in front of the elevator), everything was ruined , the food was british bad - many, many little things. Some things were perfect too - the staff, customer service and location as written above. Nevertheless, we are disappointed.
