Very nice building and good contemporary exhibitions of photographs. Some of the rooms seemed a little bit out of place (the world war exhibits for example). Free entrance, not too busy on a Thursday afternoon.
Unbelievable and stunning location full of History in a grat port of the city
What a complete waste of this beautiful building. Most of the walls exhibit nothing but white paint. Such a shame that the people who run this place haven't got a bloody clue.
Avant-garde exhibits, small scale, no tickets, you can go and see
An art museum with no power.
Despite seeing the works of famous artists such as Kruger, Warhol, and Hockney, it was a space where you could relax and appreciate without much effort.
Free entry and you get exactly what you pay for, nothing. What a waste of an afternoon, the exhibitors cannot even write in English! An embarrassment for the great city of Glasgow.
fantastic little gallery w four exhibition spaces...
Had a great trip with my school there today and the staff were lovely! The photos are some polygons we made as a part of the trip.
While I didn't "get" a lot of the art in here, it was still a very nice place to visit. Any tourist to the area should check it out, though, for the statue of the Duke of Wellington out front and his fancy hat. Any questions you might have about the local Glasgow attitude to authority can be answered by simply observing it.
As others have said... great building... shame its only partially filled / open... remember it 10 odd years ago when it was full of interesting things.. seems like they're trying to make do with less now... shame
It's free. Of course, you can sponsor personally. In the basement, there was a library that was made like a cafe, but I had no time, so I only looked around the exhibition hall. The building is also pretty, but the first floor was a bit disappointing. It wasn't a very interesting exhibition. But it was nice to see a picture of my favorite artist, Henri Carter Bresson. It was the closing day because the last day I visited, but I appreciate the kindness of the staff who allowed me to enter. It's next to the square, so go back and listen.
Thought the art was brilliant and the building was stunning.
Very interesting modern art works
This place was big and had lots of stuff to look at.
What even is this place? It's always half-empty and the art is quite disappointing to say the least.
Ugh....an amazingly beautiful building with *expletive* for displays inside when I was there (June 2016).
Visited today. Its a beautiful building best bit is the wrought iron staircase. Exhibitions boring and wasted space. Too much room taken for one artist Knox? who was dreadful. A whole room taken up with a small table of slides. Very disappointing.
If you enjoy Modern Art then this is a must. The Duke outside the museum is a delight. The gift shop has a nice selection.
A former townhouse built in 1778, the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow is both an interesting and inspiring venue which is fit for its current purpose as an art gallery. Outside, the grand stone columns are a reminder of the history of the building whilst inside it has a modern interior with features such as glass stairs which prove that an old building can be updated for modern day use and still keep its historical integrity intact.
The atmosphere is more lively than a regular art gallery, possibly because the audience is younger and the art which is on display is meant to inspire creativity and challenge traditional views of "art". Modern art isn't about perfectly painted portraits like those in traditional galleries but more about idea and concept of art and this is reflected in the atmosphere.
Although not to everyone's taste, in my opinion, the Gallery of Modern Art is good for a free day out and a good way to display art and inspire people. The building is visually pleasing although inside there are many blank wall spaces and I feel that more could be done to maximize the amount of art on display in such a big space. The gift shop was small and somewhat expensive but overall my visit was an enjoyable experience and I would recommend the Gallery of Modern Art to creative people who want to broaden their knowledge and understanding of art.
Nice exhibits, entrance is free of charge but donations in all currency are welcomed. They were much ahead of their times when they founded this place; there's also a nice little corner where you can just stop, sit and draw something (you can actually leave your drawing there for others to see).
Inside the gift shop there are some lovely postcards with the Duke on it!
Need time to sink in and find the meanings of things
Modern art is a fine taste, has an interesting set of exhibits from artwork to thought provoking filmography. If you're not a modern art guru however, it's not a good use of time, but it's free so it's worth a look!!
The equestrian statue of Wellington in front of the museum is quite interesting
Bloody terrible. a lady gave me a dirty look, and nothing was done about it. was not interesting, please be more interesting.
Lovely place to visit, There's a good library downstairs to have a sit and read on a rainy day. I spent a very relaxing evening here with my family.
Gallery of modern art, is not very large and depends on the exhibitions that you have at that time that you like more or less. Free entrance. Interesting to know the history of the cone at the head of the equestrian statue of the first Duke of Wellington at the entrance
Very nice museum, well worth visiting. Nice building and interesting exhibitions
Stunning building with an interesting series of galleries. Unfortunately most were closed for decommissioning old exhibitions. I'm sure when all galleries are open its well worth a trip to experience something other than the usual old masters type art.
Hop in when you are nearby. The main gallery is worth a quick visit. Much smaller collection and less interesting then I thought. From here it is a 5 minute walk to the lighthouse. You'll probably want to spend more time here.
Compact an bijou it may be, but relevant and insightful with wonderful architecture
Overall is good, but in my personal opinion, for tourists, there are few more artistic sites in Glasgow might even more worthy to spend time visiting.
For tourists with limited time, this city has more excellent art attractions than it is worth visiting (pure personal opinion, I came out after about 30 minutes)
I always feel a bit frustrated by this gallery, given the quality of Glasgow's many others. Building itself stunning, exhibits a bit confuddled. But worth it, always, for "the Duke's" headgear...
There's 4 galleries of rotating exhibitions, well curated showing a good range of modern installations.
Knowledgeable staff are on hand giving free guides to the gallery, on top of the free entry. Well worth stopping in while exploring Glasgow.
A pleasant place where you can withdraw from the hustle and bustle of the city for a moment. The number of exhibits is limited, but the free visit is worthwhile.
I know they have to deal with the building limitations and room sizes, but felt this was poorly curated. For example, they had a video playing in a high traffic area where people were trying to look at art in the middle of the room, while the person sitting on a bench and trying to watch the video was getting angry and moving left to right to see the video around the others who were trying to look at the art. Unless it was a social experiment to see how angry the video watcher would get... Staff was really nice though, and I witnessed them being very kind to a homeless gentleman who had wandered in to try and bathe in the downstairs restroom. Of course they asked him to leave, but in a kind and humane manner. If you are close, it's worth stopping in, as they do have some good art and it's not that big.
A low-key, controversial, and whimsical exhibit. Most are fixated on the the free standing statue outside (Duke of Wellington with his pylon hat).
Upside: Free entrance, VERY friendly and helpful staff.
Downside: Lack of art exhibits. worth no more than 30 minute visit.
Cute little gallery !!!
Not very demanding!
I've been there once and I probably will never back. Never expected such a poor selection of exhibitions, after 10 minutes I've been ready to go out. In my opinion nothing exciting to see
Small but nice. Although it was a bit 'emptish', I enjoyed seeing what's there. I very much enjoyed reading about the history of the building. I also liked the Domestic Bliss exhibition. The exhibitions make you think, despite the apparent 'emptiness' of the space as in not being full of "things", "stuff". I personally enjoyed the space. Also, the staff was very nice and helpful. Plus it's free.
Nice mix of facilities with library, cafe and gallery. The kids free Saturday art clubs are great! :-)
Another great museum in Glasgow right in the centre of the city which has free entry, quirky wee gift shop inside , always something for everyone inside with different displays for every clientele , there is also a really bug library underneath as well and don't forget that the famous duke of wellington statue is outside this building
The gallery building on the outside looks very nice. We did not have time to visit the gallery and find out what kind of wealth lies in the showrooms and depots of the same.
There's always something great going on. I personally visit it every month to check out new exhibitions.
Disappointed at the exhibition.. great building though
Really great art museum! Small but powerful. It is a must see place in Glasgow!
Some rather staggered works. Friendly and always free like all museums in Scotland
Modern art so do not please everyone, but the entrance is free!
Fantastic absolutely loved it. Curator is so friendly happy to help with any queries
Free entry, and you're passing by anyway for the traffic-cone-hatted statue outside, so why not pop in?
There are four or five small changing exhibitions each of a single artist's work, ranging from abstract sculpture to documentary photography. There's also a small public library branch in the basement.
My daughter is into modern art. I really can see what she sees in it. Sorry but I'm not into modern art.
The building is striking with its pillars, and of course the Duke of Wellington with traffic cone on head. The museum contains a history of the building which is interesting but the modern art stuff is a bit random for me. Anyway museum is free and if its raining go and check it out.
Nice art gallery, it is worth getting there especially with family there is activities for kids
There a lot of cynicism about GOMA but it's a good space with some interesting exhibits... stop being so sniffy you lot!
I am writing this review based on my like and according to me it was not much I could imagine was impressive. May be it was not the place as per my taste. Also I have been at this place only once so I am not sure whether the exhibition keeps on changing as one of the information printed on the wall suggest so. However I have captured a few photos and the opening and closing hours for your reference. Please hit the like button if the review sounds helpful.
Had been visited many times, always surprising. Great library.
I like one with the guy with a traffic cone on his heid
The Duke brought me here in january, and now Im here back again. Awesome gallery!
Lovely place, quite quiet in the morning. Recommend atleast a quick visit.
Horrid! Don't waste your time here. You'll find nicer looking things in a local dump! Printed out pieces of paper with put text from Microsoft word put in frames? The building should be used for better things.
Great place to wait for the rain to pass. Lots of different types of art to look at
Contemporary art, in maintenance of status, someone fooled a statue in front of the building
The gallery is not important, the important thing is that the Duke of Wellington in front of the gallery is one of Glasgow's iconic objects.
Themed exhibitions lack depth and obviously the curator is slacking off. Amount of artworks on view is thin and again the overall curation is unstructured.
The gallery could have done a much better job even within this pretty limited space. The relatively small exhibition area should not be an excuse.
This is by far the most disappointing modern art gallery I ve ever visited.
If you are a serious art lover, simply skip this place. Head straight to Kelvingrove instead. If you are here for tagging and sharing on social media though, the quality of exhibitions is probably not your prime interest and this place will do.
That one star goes to the loo and the friendly staff.
The library is good but I'm not a fan of modern art. If it's your thing tho go and check it out. It's quite a spacious place
A wonderful public facility - library, coffee place, clean toilets, lovely gift shop but pretty miserable staff and I have to agree with some of the other reviewers, the changing art exhibits are usually boring beyond belief!
A central building really not used to its full potential. Such a missed opportunity! You should be exhibit differing local artists, in different genres, not pieces of string, circles and empty boxes crap!
