Try and go before the fire season. All fires west of the park funnel smoke into the park, destroying the view.

People make you or break you! Beautiful historic lodge, but employees are very poorly trained for end of the season. They don't smile and have no sense of humor. Checked in, saying that we know we are early and asked if he knew when the room might be available. He repeated a couple times that its advertised for 3 and that is all he could say, the reservations are for 3 and it would be ready then. The lunch guy that took our order was abrupt and not welcoming, bordered on rude when I asked about gluten free bun and the gentleman I was with wanted to substitute soup for his fries. He points at the menu, $3. My guy says ok, but he didn't listen and we had to repeat 3 times that we wanted the soup. He was in a hurry to leave so we didn't even get an opportunity to order drinks. Usually tip 20%, not today. Not a good start but we will see how next 2 days go. Update, have since experienced more helpful gals at counter. Here for international event and they don't even provide water for meeting rooms i.e. Friday night. Did like the large bedrooms and the decks. Rather spendy and you don't even get coffee maker which is standard these days, especially since there's no breakfast area with free coffee. Speaking of no coffee, went for breakfast, I finally got tired of waiting and went to waitress bar to get our own coffee after waiting 10 minutes. Half way through breakfast I went and got our own water. Had to get our own refills as well as tables around us got service. We were totally ignored by waiter. The breakfast buffet was out of eggs by 8 am, and hot items were dried out. I had to go find a clean glass on my own because the one on my table was gritty to touch. Our group might be back but we won't. House keeping doesn't empty garbage and rather than hang new towels, they just pile them on the bed. Discovered why rooms are only half done and so late. You can walk by open doors and see 2 cleaning gals sitting and playing on their phones. Can't believe management lets all this go on.
totally echo prior review below:
Rooms are in desparate need of updates. Bathroom is very dated to the point of not looking clean and beds are noisy and uncomfortable. Rest of lodge was cozy and enjoyable.
...would also suggest dining room could do with facelift. other than that staff very friendly and nice.
Check out the lobby with huge Douglas Fir treee trunks, very rustic! Loved the backporch that wrapped around the poo/mountain side of the lodge. Lots of people were enjoying the view from the porch during their byo happy hour. Lounge was nearly full at 6pm while dining room was wide open, for seating anywhere you wanted on this August Tuesday night. Dinners in the dining room were tasty but pricy. Bison ribs were very meaty and the meat fell off the bone, less fat than the usual greasy plate of ribs, too. It came with a scoop of mashed potatoes and mixed vegies, no bread, no salad, for $32. It was one of the pricier entrees. Service was good and those Douglas Fir pillars with the mountain view provided sufficient dining room ambiance.
Very historic lobby. Upper rooms are warm if not hot. Bathrooms are in serious need of upgrades (see photo). VIAD Corp obviously is not interested in maintaining their hotels, the sister site, Waterton and this one are in serious need of repairs.
Very very expensive to eat in the restaurant. The little shop prices were unbelievably high. No elevators or ramps so was not set up for people with disabilities. Food okay in lounge.
Historic 19th century Grand hotel entwined with the history of America's westward expansion. No elevators, air conditioning. Gracious accommodating service. Glacier national Park!
Enjoyed dinner so much, we stopped by for a lunchtime coffee too, great bread pudding.
This was not a planned stop for us. We just pulled over for other reasons and decided to go into this hotel. We are not overnight guest but I have to say this launch is a place to stop and check out.
this place gave me anxiety like MEGA anxiety the staff were all nice the food was BAD! and this place smells like my armpit id like to have a TALK about big chunges bye
So unique plus awesome breakfast buffet in the restaurant.
One of the most beautiful lodges I've ever seen. Gorgeous late season. I'd move in for life if I could.
This hotel was great if all you are looking for is a room with a bed and bathroom. Despite being there in August with no ac we were comfortable all night. I was surprised we were on the third floor with no elevator options. Luckily we did not need one. I was a little disappointed to find no hot tub and no bath tub to make up for it, but that was just personal preference after a long day of hiking. I didn't look too hard, but complimentary coffee was hiding. They had a restaurant and lounge if you wanted to buy food or drinks which is nice considering the rural area. I prefer hotels with included breakfast.
Came here solely to hike East Glacier Park and spoil the lady. This was during the weekend following 4th of July so I expected busy and expensive for the stay. We stayed in the "annex" portion of the lodge in a garden level room. Outside Temps were high 80s to high 90s for the two days. Inside the room was a small sleeping area, bed, desk nightstand, and small bathroom that was an after thought. The beds were nicely made with that rustic feel but were overall uncomfortable and noisy. The frames squeaked and jostled anytime one of us moved. Not for the light sleeper. If you're accustomed to a memory foam bed or sleep number or other nicer beds, you're in for a rough night of sleep. The pillows were smaller than I expected at about 18" x 12" and not very comfortable. The floors are old, not level, and make transferring noises from above and everywhere else a gimme. No AC in the rooms made for a warmer than usual sleeping experience with outside Temps being what they were, but a box fan was provided and thankfully the temp dips down at night. However during this weekend was Native American days making fireworks and other celebrations a nightly thing but also no alcohol sales for the 3 days over the weekend. Anywhere on the reservation. I'm sure I should've known this from research but I called and asked stating I've never been and know nothing and it wasn't mentioned. Not a big deal in my mind, but be aware. Parking is largely a free for all, there is adequate room for all guests but not a great system of communicating it. There's no paved loading/unloading areas near our entrance, you just pull in the grass. The road isnt really wide enough to stay on it and have a car pass comfortably. There was parking around back that wasn't mentioned, but you just follow the herd. Also, stairs only, no elevators for those that pack heavy get a bellhop. Never used any of the hotel amenities such as the pool, golf course, restaurant etc... I can't speak to those. Seemed nice and clean and was generally busy when we went by. Also never contacted hotel staff after I stay began because nothing was worth mentioning or changeable really, so can't speak to the staffs ability to provide customer service beyond checking in, which was fine and pleasant. Overall we were there to do some long day hikes and stay somewhere nice. I like eating local, so we went out for our dinner meals. I didn't check around at other pricing but there are a number of smaller cabin style hotels and rentals just a 1/2 mile up the road that if I were to return I'd try those next time. For us, and I stress us in our situation, this hotel didn't provide anything for us to make us say 'That was great, we had an awesome stay.' For those that enjoy the hotel experience and vacation at the hotel, and maybe get nicer beds, this place would be spot on.
Overpriced for a small room without modern amenities.
The Lodge is beyond words, a must see to experience the aviance....
Nostalgically and locale unique. Quality dining, a true resort experience. A must do.
We stayed 4 nights here as part of our honeymoon. It was a beautiful location. The view from the restaurant and lounge was awesome and the historic lobby is beautiful. Do note that it's a decent drive from most of the hiking destinations, but we knew that coming in.
Dinner was fantastic. Everything was good - try the huckleberry meatballs, huckleberry margarita, huckleberry bread pudding!
Breakfast buffet has plenty of options, though the pancakes weren't hot. You can also order off the menu for a similar price, tastier options, but a much longer wait. Regardless of which we chose, coffee service was painfully slow and waitstaff at breakfast was not very attentive. Breakfast waitstaff is the reason I didn't rate 5 stars. There are food options within walking distance if that is a real put-off.
This hotel had several disappointing features.
First, we paid for a veranda access room but the door to the veranda did not open. Second, the pool was empty and no one told us about this. My son really wanted to swim. Third, many of the staff were unpleasant to deal with. I suspect the last one is a result of poor treatment by management, but I can't be sure.
It definitely wasn't worth the $260/night price. Next time I'll camp nearby in the National Forest for free.
Small room, can hear folks talk in adjoining rooms,, did not get the food I oerdered two separate times.
The Lodge is directly across from the Amtrak station. It is geared to serving casual tourists as well as serious hikers and backpackers. All come to experience the majesty and spirituality of the mountains. The Lodge is large and comfortable even though it is decidedly rustic as befitting it's clientele. The staff are uniformly upbeat and eager to meet their guests' needs. Their are several areas specifically designed to view the stunning scenery from the comfort of the interior and exterior as well as wide veranda on upper floors with rocking chairs and matching, padded seating. A variety of tours, guides and shuttles guarantee a great stay.
Beautiful place. All of these lodges are first class.
Went in for a quick peek of the lobby. It has beautiful decor with lots of local history.
Lots of snow. Big change from Arizona. Both lodges were awesome.
Beautiful old wooden building on Lake Mc Donald. Nice area, also stop for the Red bus which from here to Logans pass via the Road to the Sun.
Extremely impressive, beautiful views of the Mountains
A nice hotel in a good location. The rooms are in need of a refurb, particularly the bathrooms. We asked for an upgrade as our room was just too basic and were given one willingly which we thought was very fair of them. The staff are friendly, helpful and nice to deal with. The breakfast is good.
Great place to stay in East Glacier, and easy access to Glacier National Park.
It is dated (historic) so know what you're getting into before booking. Actual room keys, older fixtures, and our sink was outside the bathroom. We underestimated the length of getting through Going To The Sun road and came back after 11pm. With it being older and trying to be quite, my wife said she felt like she was at her grand parents house with how creaky the floors were. Pleasant staff and great viee of the mountains right off the back deck or pool.
Did not get a chance to stay in the Lodge, but the walk up to the lodge was amazing. The inside is wonderful and trees the structure is built with is jaw dropping. We had a drink in the bar and the view of the mountains was also incredible.
Stopped in to see the old lodge. Beautiful place. Very relaxed atmosphere.
Wonderful location, bellhops meet you at the train station, bring luggage to the hotel and to your room. Views from room, lobby, dining are great. Tours of national Park available from the lodge.
Food was good. Limited vegan and vegetarian options, but there were a few. Good servers who work hard.
The linens are like sandpaper, and the hotel soaps are awful. The bed is barely a full size bed. We have one tiny window. There is a flimsy door that connects our room to the room next door, and it only locks from our side. The staff has been disaffected and curt. There is no AC and no internet-- this was NOT on the website. Everything is wildly overpriced (esp the restaurant). This room is one of the less expensive ones at $160 PER NIGHT. I would understand the low quality and lack of amenities if I was paying half as much. I feel duped and taken advantage of. We will never, ever stay at a Glacier Park Inc. affiliated hotel again.
It was pleasant stay.. Dining room, lounge, lobby area were nice. I would come back.
It was an amazing hotel absolutely gorgeous it's a beautiful log cabin type
The food options were horrible. If you had kids it doesn't cater the children. The whole menu was fish and steak
Ate lunch with my family and found the food to be adequate for the price. The service was good, but the facikities seemed in need of a face lift. Fantastic views.
Visited their gift shops. Their shops carried a nice variety of souvenirs the bathrooms were very nice and clean.
I want to give this lovely old resort a full five stars, but I can't quite do it. The experience has some great parts, brought down by a few low points. Overall, it's a solid 4+ stars.
The good: the building is over 100 years old and has some spectacular features. The grand hall area, supported by massive trees as columns, is lovely. There are great open common areas with games and puzzles and seating that encourages guests to mingle. The setting on the edge of Glacier National Park is gorgeous. The grounds are inviting and we'll kept. The staff is helpful, friendly, and makes people feel welcome. The restaurant and lounge are both good, with decent food and reasonable prices.
If it was just this, the place would have a solid five stars. But . . .
The not so good: the building is over 100 years old, so amenities like, say, electricity, were added later. The rooms are reasonable in size, but the retrofits with power, sprinklers, etc., left a bit to be desired. The bathroom is mediocre for a cheap motel, let alone something grand as this should be. The beds are hard and squeaky. Furniture in the room is Spartan at best - think one nightstand for two beds, and close to neither.
If you don't spend much time in the room, it's a non issue. But it knocked the rating down for me. There are no TV's in room, which I don't mind at all, but some people might. Internet and phone service is poor, which is more of an issue for me.
Overall, it's a lovely old lodge in a spectacular setting with a great crew - let down by sleeping accommodation that leaves a lot to be desired.
The location was great! As soon as you go underneath the train bridge, you see it. A massive log building rich with history. The entire atmosphere of the lodge is incredible and beautiful. The scenery alone would make anyone love it the instant they see it. The staff were kind and courteous and the gift shops had a lot to offer. The fact this place can be a wonderful venue location for meetings and weddings is also a huge selling point! This lodge is absolutely awesome!
Rooms are in desparate need of updates. Bathroom is very dated to the point of not looking clean and beds are noisy and uncomfortable. Rest of lodge was cozy and enjoyable.
We loved the quiet side of glacier, this is a great place to visit and get away from the crowds. The staff was great, they surprised us with a gift because they heard it was our 30th wedding anniversary trip. Very much appreciated and the mountain view room was awesome.
I didn't expect much view, but wanted more than I got. Very small room, but we weren't there more than to sleep. Dining room service was unprepared for customers. Didn't have enough staff or something. Bar service was great and friendly.
Wow. Large rooms. Great breakfast buffet. Bathroom rather small, but keep in mind this is an older, historic facility.
Nice enjoyable stop when you are traveling through Glacier National Park.
Worth stopping in even if you're not staying here. Damn! The size of those logs.
True old lodge experience. No tv. Play in the lobby at night doing puzzles, playing cards, listening to live music by the fire.
Beautiful old lodge, with the oldest natural grass golf course in Montana
Location is the real draw. Rental car better approach than shuttle service. Overall, the service friendly though lacking in quality with regard to both food and overall in-room amenities available. In short, bring your own food, libations and treat the on property dining as a secondary choice as opposed to the main affair. Glamping need not be so commissary-like at the current price point. Staff more often than not somewhere between untrained and distracted by their fellow employees.
This latter point is in fact the so called standard of service as opposed to the exception.
Dined at Lake McDonald Lodge also, the buffet-quality alive and well here to. Perhaps they could visit the Paradise Inn (Mt.Rainer) for a better perspective in offering(s) in quality of food, if not service. Having traveled to many of the National Park Lodges there is a growing hiring practice that brings in a semi-literate English-speaking foreign students. Which obviously presents a disharmony between what would be the social norm for the average North American traveler and what would be understood and accepted as a Eurasian sensibility.
This was first trip to Glacier, will camp the next time in St. Mary's for a more authentic experience and access to trailheads. Logan Pass a real gem.
Not an overall good value. My husband and I booked the lodge for two nights as a big splurge for the end of our trip and a long time dream of mine to stay at a National Park lodge. Our grand total for the two nights was just under $600. I anticipated the grandeur and upkeep would be in our room as well. When we got up to our rooms we were so disappointed. It didn't feel rustic, it just felt old and on the verge of disrepair. Mold in the bathroom, plastic siding on the bathroom walls, chipped paint on the sink, big scratches on the headboard of the bed, barely any decor and worst of all- the thinnest walls! When we arrived our neighbor was taking a midday nap and I could hear him breathing (not snoring, simply breathing). We had to run a box fan at all times for white noise. That being said, it was cool to stay and spend an extended amount of time in the historic building and we especially liked the walking tour. The staff were also so hard working and friendly.
Overall- I do not recommend staying here. Visit the lodge and find a cheaper motel to stay in town.
Was only hear for breakfast, very over priced for the quality of food
As far as the old lodges go in the park, it's one of my favorites. The woodwork is incredible and lobby area is pretty spacious and open, unlike the Many Glacier or Lake McDonald Lodges. The bathrooms in the rooms though were definitely reminiscent of the 1910's when it was built though, is the only downside, but I understand that it's part of the history and atmosphere of the lodge. Beautiful decor and garden outside surrounding the lodge as well.
A very nice place to hang out in even if you don't have a room. Spacious center area with enormous tree trunks holding up the roof, nice views into glacier.
The Hotel building and vicinity:
The hotel is 100+ years old and looks great from inside and out. Being in the vicinity of GNP is what keeps it going. Excellent views from around the hotel. Great garden area and common/lobby area.
Did not dine at the restaurant though.
The Room:
The design is old. It shows. Our deluxe room was adjacent and connected to other rooms on both sides.
This meant that there is no privacy as the walls are probably thin. We could hear noises from the adjacent rooms. Including bathroom flush and stuff.
I couldn't find a thermostat or central heating/cooling in the room. Only option was a box fan in the room.
The bathroom doesnt have an exhaust or a vent as well.
Certainly not worth the $250 with taxes that I paid.
An awesome lodge built in 1912-1913 along the railroad through Montana.
The lobby is huge and framed by more than 30 Duglas firs. All the outdoor columns are cedars. There is a pool behind the lodge. The view is fantastic. there are several guided tours, as well as hiking possibilities. there is also a small golfcourse with short holes in front of the lodge.
Old and Historical. Overpriced meals and many rooms are in disrepair and poorly maintained
Sadly. Beautiful on outside, but basically just old. There is old and good, and there is old and sad. This is sad.
Amazing place everybody must spend a few nights at the big tree lodge
Great historic Lodge. Prices are very touristy, if you get my drift. Pretty sweet old lodge
Truly breathtaking lodge and views of the Rocky Mountains
Historic, old hotel. Beautiful grounds, restaurant on site. No t.v. in rooms, wifi coverage is good though. As it's almost 100 years old, the floors squeak...a lot. So your neighbor above you, may drive you crazy. Bring earplugs to sleep. Oh...and no a/c in rooms, only heat.
The lodge was an interesting lodge. It was badly in need of updating, the food menu was very limited, and service was less than expected
Absolutely beautiful lodge inside and outside!! Great gift shop too!
Beautiful building with a good social aspect, and a great restaurant.
For the price they charge , and what you get, not worth the cost.
Awesome views, great rustic lodging, service and staff were
When you stay here, you pretty much know what you are in for. No TV, Internet, or air conditioning. But even knowing that, I found the place to be disappointing. The public areas are great, but the room was very lacking. I guess we were lucky to have two windows as it was a hot day, so we were able to air out the room a little. This let the odd smell in the room dissipate some. Our balcony would have been a great place to relax, but pigeon mess kind of ruined that. The place is extremely overpriced. I kind of feel like I survived the stay rather than enjoyed the stay.
All me and my family and friends could say was wow because we were in awww of the natural beauty
Nice place pretty basic setup, no TV or AC, so bring a fan of you can, they do have box fan in each room. The rooms are spacious and clean, the bathroom is small, very small but everything works nicely. They have a spacious lobby where you can sit relax or play games.
Wonderful historic lodge with friendly and helpful staff. Try the huckleberry margarita.
