The Getty Villa is a beautiful museum dedicated to the arts and culture of Greece, Rome and Etruria. The Villa itself is mirrored after after the Villa of the Papyri and is absolutely stunning. The tickets are free but you will have to pay to park, when you pay for parking at the Getty Center or Getty Villa you get to go to the other for free, make sure to keep your ticket. The exhibits are interesting and have a lot of antiquities to check out, however due to the size of the Villa it's unlikely that you would spend all day there. Breakfast and lunch are options here as they have a restaurant and food cart, I suggest to get there at opening for breakfast as they tend to sell out of food quickly. Overall the place is a must if your coming into L.A, the campus is very photogenic and I suggest to read up on Getty himself as its a pretty interesting story in itself.

Very beautiful collection of ancient art, especially Greco-Roman, with unique pieces. Even the place itself, even if it is an imitation of an ancient villa, is interesting. You pay for parking, but admission is free. If you have little time available to see the most interesting things in Los Angeles, I recommend not to miss this opportunity, which is worth much more than the Paul Getty Center, dedicated to modern art, in my opinion overrated.

They try to force people park at their parking and pay money while it is possible to park on the next street. A very rude security guard said that they are gonna tow my car because i parked on the street, but no one did.

Really great place to explore for an hour or two! The gardens were spectacular and the artwork and relics were really intriguing. Ancient sculptors were bad at making noses because a lot of the noses on the sculptures were just bad.... not that I could do better myself, but bad noses was a common theme with the sculptures. It s free to get in, but you still need to make a reservation online. Parking is $20. It was a good thing to do on a Monday afternoon while we were on vacation and didn t feel like going to the beach. If you re an instagram influencer you d probably nut pretty hard at all the cool picture opportunities at this place. Really pretty place, highly recommend a visit.

Used to come here in the 80's and 90's, so have a real fondness for the Villa. Although the upgrades are impressive, I did rather prefer the way it used to be. Still, it's a lovely place with much ancient beauty to enjoy. The cafe was a pleasant surprise - delicious offerings although steeply priced.

The curators have significantly reorganized the collection to tell the history of the Roman/Mediterranean civilization and set it in context with its neighbors Persia, Egypt, Phoenicia, etc. Moving through galleries moves through time. Much improved. Looking forward to when the Villa adds their new movie presentation.

The featured exhibit is the Villa of the Papyri. Buried by the eruption that wiped out Pompeii and Herculaneum, it's the structure after which the Getty is patterned. The exhibit has artifacts found inside the Villa, including an ancient library.

We will return this fall 2019 to view the upcoming Assyrian exhibit.

Came here during construction so major tourist spots were blocked off. However, the Getty is free (except parking) and not that packed during the weekdays. Free screenings inside. The place is very well kept and absolutely beautiful. Be sure to wander through the rooms for amazing sculptures and paintings.

Beautiful, mesmerizing and always humbling to see how so many antiquities survive for so many years. Do not miss this enchanting place! We even saw a deer outside the gate of the East Garden, I think!

Gorgeous buildings and gardens with views that give you some of the best photo ops in LA County. Take a tour if you have time and be sure to check the calendar for talks by curators, historians, and authors. Oh, and there's art! Fantastic examples from the ancient world. A great way to spend the day.

Went to see some exhibits and enjoyed our time here. Great museum. They do a really great job of curating great work and exhibits. There is a beautiful courtyard to relax and enjoy some water features. You can sit and enjoy the beautiful setting and take your time as you go from exhibit to exhibit. Take your camera and be ready to take lots of photos.

The Getty Villa is at the easterly end of the Mali...

The Getty Villa is at the easterly end of the Malibu coast in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States. One of two locations of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Villa is an educational center and museum dedicated to the study of the arts and cultures of ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. The collection has 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities dating from 6,500 BC to 400 AD, including the Lansdowne Heracles and the Victorious Youth. The UCLA/Getty Master's Program in Archaeological and Ethnographic Conservation is housed on this campus. The collection has 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities dating from 6,500 BC to 400 AD, of which approximately 1,400 are on view. Among the outstanding items is Victorious Youth, one of few life-size Greek bronze statues to have survived to modern times. The Lansdowne Heracles is a Hadrianic Roman sculpture in the manner of Lysippus. The Villa also has jewelry and coin collections and an extensive 20,000 volume library of books covering art from these periods. The Villa also displays the Getty kouros, which the museum lists as "Greek, about 530 B.C., or modern forgery" because scientific analysis is inconclusive as to whether the marble statue can be dated to Greek times.[36][48] If genuine, the Getty kouros is one of only twelve remaining intact lifesize kouroi. The Marbury Hall Zeus is an 81 in (2.1 m) tall marble statue that was recovered from ruins at Tivoli near Rome. Detailed information about the J. Paul Getty Museum's collection at the Getty Villa is provided on "GettyGuide". This is available both at the Museum, at various points known as "GettyGuide stations", and externally on its website.[

Very beautiful museum of ancient art. The complement to the Getty Museum.
Here, everything is based on very faithful reconstructions of villas dating from the end of the Roman Republic.
The main source of inspiration is the papyrus villa, which probably belonged to Julius Caesar's stepfather.
It is a very beautiful building, which houses a very well constructed collection. The exhibits are mainly sculptures and bas-reliefs.
Good to know :
. The museum opens at 10:00 am but you can access the gardens earlier.
. Even if it's free, book and come with your printed tickets.

Absolutely beautiful (and free, aside from parking). Felt like I was in Rome or Greece--truly stunning exhibits and architecture. Take a tour--I liked the architecture one. If you do the Getty Center and Villa in one day, you only pay for parking once. I did this (open until 9p on Saturdays!).

Beautiful place not to be missed if you are visiting Malibu. Entrance is free but you need a timed ticket. We got it online on our way there and were about an hour past our scheduled time but nobody said anything. It was at the end of the day and not very crowded. There are a lot of attendants around and they were all very helpful and knowledgeable.

TIP: if you want to do something on the last day and fly again in the evening, you should visit the Getty Villa, where you can easily get there.

If you have not rented a car or taken a taxi, simply take the bus (1 trip: $ 1.75) that goes from Santa Monica towards Malibu. Directly opposite the bus stop is the entrance for the cars where you have to report and you will be picked up by a shuttle service that will drive you to the villa.

The villa itself is beautifully designed, as is the park. Because of the scarcity of water in California, you have to expect that the pools are empty and fountains are not running. The architecture is impressive. Inside, Greek and Roman artifacts are exhibited.

You can order the food in the restaurant, you will be given a number which you can place on the table and the food will be served. The whole thing has been made wheelchair accessible (there is a lift, among other things).

The bus stop (METRO 534) back to Santa Monica looks pretty deserted and ready for demolition. UPDATE (November 2017): stop has now been redone (with bench)

Important: Before registration / reservation / ticket online (free) on the Getty website, have it stamped by the bus driver (which I did not do). But everything went well.

ENGLISH:
When you're for 24 hours in Santa Monica so you should take a hotel. You Can spend the one evening at the Santa Monica Beach / Pier and next day - a good tip: you can use from Santa Monica the BUS (METRO 534 - to / from Malibu) to the GETTY VILLA. One way approx 20 min.

At the Entrance for the Cars you will get picked up with a shuttle and transported up to the Villa.
Except the bus ticket (its not expensive) there are no costs to enter the villa but reservation online has to be made.

Its a wonderful place (park and museum) to spend the last few hours in LA / Santa Monica area until your flight goes on the evening.
+ Wheelchairs are no problem. There are elevators (check the website).
+ Self-Service Restaurant (the warm meal will be served).

Conclusion: it was a good choice to hang from the morning till early afternoon there.

We had a wonderful time exploring the museum. There were lots of staff members to help us explore the collections. I enjoyed the children touch area as much as the children did. We plan to return soon. I highly recommend it. My only issue was parking was $20 but we were expecting it to be $15.

Very good museum, at the height of the best in the world. Although it is small anyway it handles very important pieces. It is not very saturated with people and it is very relaxed and calm. The bad thing is the restaurant is not very good food and prices if they are high.

This mansion is identical to a Roman villa in Italy found under the ashes of Pompeii, and contains a lot of objects and statues found in perfect condition since the eruption of a volcano buried it and kept it intact for hundreds of years.

What makes this museum stand out, even from many museums in Rome itself, is the quality of the restorations and mix of media shown, far more than just marble. One room of glass artifacts felt like it came straight out of a contemporary art museum, and the gardens in particular bring the past to life.
That said, there isn't much of a story being told. The collection feels too much like what it is, the random collection of a rich person. Here, you can look at the past, but you cannot feel it. We should campaign to have tour guides in togas...
One tour guide in particular was disappointing, whose knowledge of Roman history seemed built more on movies than historical fact. There did appear to be more knowledgeably guides, but they were monopolized by student groups. Since most guests seem to be there more for selfies than history, perhaps it doesn't really matter. Not that selfies are bad, it is really a beautiful place for a photo.

Beautiful Museum inspired by an ancient Italian Villa. The Getty Villa's floors and walls are adorned in precious marble stones. There are beautiful gardens and scenic views facing the sea. The majority of the art found here dates back to the Greco-Roman civilization with a mixture of contemporary art inspired by themes related to Greco-Roman events, ideologies, or influential people.

The Getty Villa is a trip back in time. You feel like you're entering an archeological dig as you climb the steps up the hill to the museum entrance. Once inside, the designers' attention to detail makes you feel as if you might actually be in an ancient Roman estate filled with priceless treasures from a bygone era.
