Gethsemane Garden Center Review

Well-organized even during a pandemic, Gethsemane made sure their staff and customers were protected during herb and plant sales.

6yrs and counting my sons have brought me here for Mothers Day ! And I'm on my own the other half dozen times I come from Cincy Can't say enough of the place , the knowledge , the friendliness , the prices for healthy plants that never die . On my way there right now ! Happy Mothers Day !

Parking can be tough at times you might wanna consider taking the free spaces on the street

Great place local place. Lots of variety as far a plants and a friendly staff.

I agree this place has it all and a very thorough selection but I can't support the snobbery that exudes from the staff. They are departmentalized and burearocratic. Trees are like a different P&L from plants and they pass you around the store - not because they don't have the expertise but because it's not their department. We returned a bush and some plants and we had to get "approval" from the plant department and then return the bush in the tree department. It's just not very customer friendly and that's not just returns, it's also in getting advice and input. For an "expert" garden center, there isn't really a holistic resource in the place which I would expect. The guys in the car park are the best staff they have. Super nice and helpful. It's an amazing garden center no doubt, just not very customer focused.

Lots of great gifts, plants and homewares, candles, Christmas ornaments and decor.the annual holiday open house is always fun

Great Christmas trees and full service. They remove the plastic to let you see the tree, cut the bottom, rewrap it and put it in your roof and tie it down. Trees are expensive but that's their fault.. there's a shortage and prices are higher than usual. Very fresh and best selection of all sizes from as small as on Schroeder's piano in Charlie Brown to 12+ feet. If course, great source for your garden and plant/tree needs all year long but it's all about Christmas now! Garland and ornaments and the lot too

Great selection, vigorous growth, a pleasant oasis in the city. Could answer most of my questions, and only one plant failed in 30 years. The only problem is they keep running out of lobelia (my favorite annual).

I ve lived near this place for 8 years now and never went in. Today was my first time and now I see why people rave about this place! Zach was amazing he was so helpful and knowledgeable. I will never buy from another place again! You can go to Home Depot or other retail stores to save money but if you want the best plants with the best advice, go here. Thanks Zach!!

I happened to be out in the 'burbs and decided to stop into a garden center.
I was so disappointed that I immediately drove straight to Gethsemane Gardens for the most beautiful selection and quality. I will never stray again!

Love the place but prices went up considerably. You can find same or similar selection at Home Depot at a lower price. I managed to find some gems thou. Waiting for their Spring/Summer selection.

Great selection and mostly amazing service. Was there for a half hour without assistance but after I started to purchase the plant someone approached me and gave great advice about care and potting. Overall this place is amazing.

As a plant lover myself, this place was heaven. I visited in September and the place was bustling with happy staff and customers. Lots of big pots were on sale. They have every plant you can think of to fit your imagination or budget. I spent at least an hour there and all the staff at some point checked on me to make sure I didn't have any questions or need any help. Not only are they knowledgable and passionate about plants, the owner appears to be quite the advocate for wildlife as well. They have rescued zebra finches, but a sign reminds you to adopt dont shop. They have little toads as well that hitchhiked with plant shipments and wouldn't be able to ethically be released in a completely different environment, so they have a well-taken care of little tank for them to live lavishly in. My only complaint is the fishies seem to be getting a little too big for their koi pond and could probably use some more space. Otherwise, a truly wonderful store, with every plant thing you would ever need, and lots of helpful informed staff.

I doubt I have ever gone there and not bought something, even if my plan was to just browse.

Great sandwiches . Is you're a vegetarian there are great selections of sandwiches soups and all kinds of other foods. They have great drinks and coffee you need to try.

Incredible customer service! Zach was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. He was thorough and very patient with all of our questions. Other places are keen to rush you and move on to someone else. Working with Zach made the (usually mundane) experience of shopping for plants really pleasant. We learned a lot! Beautiful selection as well- we are very happy with our tree. The price point runs a little higher than average, but the selection, service, and education at Gethsemane are so worth it. A most excellent garden center with the most outstanding Christmas decor in Chicago! It is on our list of yearly stops at Christmas time!! Highly recommended!

Recently I went and saw a great Garden place; this is amazing, fresh air and beautiful looking. This Garden is out on an open field, flowers are all really fresh. They are grown right there and sold to the public. Also, this Garden does some great gardening services. I really enjoyed lot every second in this Nursery. This is a very nice place to buy a home Garden.

This place is HUGE! They have sections for all types of houseplants, garden plants, even trees and shrubs! They also have vegetable plants, a gift shop, and all the items for your gardening needs. I love this place. The staff were friendly and helpful, their selection is massive, and the prices are reasonable. Personally, I'd rather visit this garden center than go to Home Depot. Will definitely be returning to the Gethsemane Garden Center in the future for whatever my plants need!

Purchased a beautiful spread of plants at very fair prices! One of the staff members helped me pick out each one and provided excellent recommendations. This place is knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to go the extra mile for their customers. I can't recommend them enough.

I rarely write reviews but just had to say that I just got home from my first time at this garden center and was super impressed with the selection, the quality, and professionalism of all the staff, even while and especially how they were enforcing social distancing. I may never go to any other garden center again, even though others are much closer.

Purchased rose 3 days ago, as of next day, plant's leaves turned yellow with black spots and keep falling off. As if today 1/8 of plant has yellow leaves with black spots. No returns. Apparently the plant is sick

A north Side staple for all things plants. They don't usually do cut flowers but will habe some great roses for Valentine's day etc. Winter they have all your tree needs. You will spend city prices but they are great trees. Summer, the plants I get from there always seem to do better than ones I have grabbed from anywhere else.

An amazing garden center with everything from fruit trees tonjade plants. It's wonderful just walking through during the warm months as well.

You get what you pay for. It s an old adage, but absolutely true here. As an amateur but enthusiastic gardener this place has it all; friendly advice, great selection of well tended plants, excellent planting ideas, huge selection of pots and other gardening stuff. Turned our front yard from blah to beautiful in no time!

Absolutely LOVE coming here for all my plant needs. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. This place has an amazing variety of plants in great healthy condition.

We go here every year for our Christmas tree! Every year we find the perfect tree and get great service. You pick the tree, they take care of the rest.

I went to Gethsemane looking for a Christmas gift for my boyfriend's parents and had no idea where to start. The staff was really helpful in working with my budget and finding something special. If you're looking for a really unique and fun gift, I recommend looking at their small bonsai. They have many different types and can advise on which are the easiest or best for the environment it will live in. I'm hoping to visit again soon!

I love this place! Their plants are beautiful, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and it's just a lovely garden center. They've done a great job keeping staff and customers safe while they shop. Even if you aren't a gardener, their greenhouse and boutique(when they open back up) are always worth a visit.

This is a wonderful garden center. I went today to get herbs to feed the Swallowtails I'm raising. Everyone got so excited and was looking at the plants to see if they could find more eggs to send me home with. They are just great! No need to look any place else.

Always a fantastic experience at Gethsemane, but want to give a shout out to Dave in Statuary for being especially helpful with my mulch purchase during a very busy visit yesterday. Dave jumped in and went out of his way to help, and was super friendly and kind! Employees like Dave are why I will always support Gethsemane!!

Nice atmosphere. Kids with little training mixed in with a few experienced plant ppl. You'd better know what you want before heading there. Their few pros are very busy. Weekends, they are swamped.
The container selection is impressive.
They have the big, deep planter boxes that places like Home Depot do not carry.

Earlier this week I visited Gethsemane Garden Center and picked out four large containers to be planted with annuals and delivered to my home. They were delivered this morning and when I asked the delivery guys where their zip ties were to hang the containers they both looked at me and said that it wasn't in the order. I have used other flower and garden centers in previous years and never had to specify to bring zip ties. It's just common sense. I spent well over $900 dollars on these flower containers and now they are sitting on my balconies propped up against the sides getting crushed. I called Gethsemane and they couldn't have been less helpful or polite. They wanted me to pay several dollars for a pack of zip ties that they couldn't even deliver today. I will not be using them again in the future. The flowers are now ruined and I wasted a lot of money with this business.

Long time gardening buff and worked in customer service my entire life, I was initially walking around looking at the selection of plants, I was hoping someone came to ask me if I needed help and Colin was the first to come up to me and ask me. He engaged me with straight enthusiasm and you could feel the absolute passion he has for plants, it was as if this was his garden and he was so excited to tell you about it, as if he was just brimming to tell you about the life story of this habitat here at Gethsemane. By far, without a doubt the BEST customer service interaction I've ever had, this guy needs his own show/ YouTube channel, he's so engaging but at the same time not exhausting, I've had many great customer service experiences where the person was being exhausting/ talked in circles, listening to Colin describe plants was like watching a movie take place. I definitely will be coming back, prices were phenomenal, the plants were brimming with life, this place is a gem. A++

I'm glad this place is in the neighborhood! Every plant you can imagine, staff who know their stuff, and a great gift shop...also love the pond in the greenhouse with the massive koi.

This is a beautiful place to shop. The plants are well taken care of and the staff is friendly. They have a wide variety of plants. My favorites are the cacti and succulents. You even get a pleasant surprise of in house birds. Dogs seem to be welcome in the store. I visit often and always enjoy what I purchase.

This time was terrible! 3/ 26. Had a little rock with some plastic greens clearly marked $6.99 but when I wanted it, it became $32. Then they said without the greens it would be $22. This next time was much better. 4/2. They found and held an item for me. Said they would check if they could get more. Knew plants for shade and the rock I wanted last time suddenly became $16.95.

We love tbis place. The plants for our business are from there and now other things in home are from there.

Not much variety in tomato plants
The term " fruit size" is misleading. The spikes say that for cherry tomatoes & medium tomatoes.
Look at ounces..the place is very busy

I actually love Gwthsemane and have been using your establishment sence moving to Chicago in 1992. This being said, most of your staff are very helpful and welcoming but I believe, can be uncomfortable with African American males like myself. This made me uncomfortable and rushed to address my purchases.

I will need to return in late May to purchase summer flowers and hopefully my experience will reflect a positive change with regard to your young cashiers.

I only went to the indoor greenhouse for the houseplants and tropicals. In that area, they had an AMAZING selection of healthy looking plants. I went with a friend and we were checked on by multiple employees to see if we needed help and overheard conversations of their employees giving solid plant advice. Selection was huge. Prices were steep. I think the prices were high, most common were 6"-8" pots for $20 so thats not the most budget plant friendly, but the plants looked real good and healthy.

This place is incredible. Even if you re not looking to purchase any plants, it s just so much fun to wander around their beautiful shop and look at all the awesome plants. However, I can almost guarantee something is going to catch your eye and you won t leave empty handed!

My personal experience here was excellent. Zach was our garden guide who approached us and asked if we had any questions and I wish I could have just rented him for the day so I could just listen to him talk about plants! He was unbelievably helpful and far exceeded any expectations of what customer service should entail.

At one point, the other staff even had some extra donuts on hand and offered them to us which is just a side note about how much fun we had just hanging out with their great employees.

If you are even remotely interested in plants in the slightest, just swing by and check this place out. It s unreal and I guarantee you won t be disappointed. You might even find a new passion for plants like I just renewed! Also, check out my awesome little plants I just bought this time I went. Love them.

Excellent service and inventory of everything you need! I had the pleasure of working with Rob about buying a bunch of indoor plants, which I had no knowledge on. He was awesome and know about every plant in the greenhouse! Thanks for great service.

We went today to buy some evergreen boxwood; the area is located at the back the ones with trees. The lady at the register wasn't very nice. My cart was right outside her door so she can easily reach for the price tags. But no, she was asking me to check each tag and tell her the prices. There were like more than 2 tags per plant, one for the price & one for the plant's name and instructions I suppose. Others had 3 tags. So I had to keep going back & forth because I am not familiar with them. It was so difficult for her to do her job; she just wanted to remain in her sit & move a few fingers.

My favorite plant store and gift shop. Literally my most artistic and heartwarming purchases were made here.
