Excellent location and spacious room (6 bed mixed room). Extremely small bathroom! Imaging that you are in a plane! Just uncomfortable if you are ok. But imposible if you are fat.

Great location, close to the rail station and not far from other amenities.

Cheap, fair price. Good rooms and perfect connection, as it is located directly at the main station. The shopping mile is also right next door. So the perfect hostel for the small budget

Great location, staff was very nice and check in/out was smooth. The room (private 4 people room with own bathroom) was nothing fancy but not bad either - about what you would expect from a hostel (bring your own soap!). The beds were very comfortable.

But in each floor you can find a quite good bathroom...

The Generator Hostel I really liked, as it was very nice and comfortable despite the external appearance inside. The rooms were actually nice, except for the fact that the shower room and toilet were too small. The location of the hostel is also quite central (you can get to the main train station in 2-3 minutes and to the city in about 10 minutes).
I enjoyed the stay very much and can only recommend the hostel.

My girlfriend and I was sleeping here for 2 nights. The service was great and the room nice and tidy. But the neighborhood was a bit rough at night and therefore I don't think that we would stay here again.

The hostel is very easy to find as its in close proximity of the station. Bar area is quite cool if you want a drink and mingle. Showers and toilets are quite small - ie. no room to move about. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Very secure as need card to enter building and rooms, also there is a security guard near the front door. Light and power near beds. Bring own locks for lockers. Towels available to rent. Able to store bags after checkout and also offers late checkout for a small fee.

I stayed in the hostel for only one but with a friend. The room was small but very clean. The furniture was moderate, just what you would expect for the very reasonable price they offered. What I rally appreciated was how close it was to the main train station, it was about 300 m from it.

All in all, clean, good price and absolutely perfect location. The staff was also quite helpful.

Clean and tidy hostel with friendly and helpful staff. Stayed in twin room with friend. Not a huge room, but ok as a base. There are plenty of good places nearby to eat and drink. Really handy location next to main station.

Arrived room not ready to wait two hours the room was booked for 8 people did not get but two separate rooms. Staff can not speak German! Also took us to other floors! Not again

We had two different double rooms due to an obviously broken window. In the first room the window could not be closed, so it was difficult to sleep with the street noise. In the second room the window could not be opened, so that in between it could not be ventilated and it was very, very stuffy, there was no other ventilation system. Allergy-friendly pillows are only available on request. The small shelf above the sink makes it almost impossible to wash your face at the sink. Overall, the rooms are not particularly comfortable due to their tightness.

One of the best hostels I've ever been to. We had a family room that was very clean, the bathroom was very small, but it was enough for a weekend. After all, it's not a hotel. Staff very friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet is now not the largest, there are rolls, butter, Nutella, jam, cheese, salami and boiled eggs. And cereal.
You can book that for 5 euros, which is fine.
And although the hostel is right at the train station, it is absolutely not loud. You can sleep very well at night :)

Stayed in a twin room. Very tiny room and bathroom, but if you are staying only for 1 or 2 nights its more than okey.

Went to the generator in Barcelona and enjoyed very much and this is what made me come back in Hamburg.



Other than that everything was as per expected, close to train and bus station, close to the seeings of Hamburg and the staff were extremely helpful and caring.

The shared rooms are not cramped, but very spartan. Only double beds and a large steel box per bed under the bed, which can be secured with a padlock, as a replacement for a cupboard. Table or chairs? Nothing. There would be enough space. The mattresses are spring core mattresses, I didn't know they still existed. Unfortunately not really comfortable. There are enough sockets in the room, in addition to several on the wall, one per bed as well as 2 USB-A charging ports.

The windows can only be opened a tiny gap, a proper exchange of air does not succeed. Noise-sensitive people have to leave the window anyway, traffic noise and singing drunks can be heard thanks to the proximity to the train station. It's quiet with the window closed.

Worst of all, however, are the bathroom cubicles in the room: there is a toilet cubicle and a shower cubicle, both so narrow that you can hardly turn in them. The sinks are barely deep and there is a shelf above them, so you can only spit toothpaste into the sink by twisting it.

The WiFi works for the most part, but is regularly annoying due to a captive portal that constantly requests a lot of personal data (and requests for unselected advertising consent), so the WiFi is not free but is paid for with data. IPv6 does not exist, and that is no longer acceptable in 2018.

The magnetic stripe-based key card system is incredibly annoying, the cards practically never work on the door to the house, sometimes on the elevator door and only after several attempts on the room door. A decent NFC-based system would be less frustrating.

Very good location, just in front of the central train station. Most clients are young people, so it might be noisy sometimes. The breakfast was not very good, I would recommend n to pay a bit more and go to a cafe. Private rooms are small but OK, although the bathroom is tiny and not very appealing.

Great hostel. Great location. Breakfast is quite substantial and varied.

The location and the staff are good. There are two stars for that.

But: the rooms are simply not nice and the beds are not comfortable and you cannot sleep comfortably here. It's either too hot or too loud (with the window open).

Price-performance ratio is unfortunately not right despite the location and the nice staff.

The hostel is acceptable but there is not air/con in the rooms, and this summer (2018) was a particulary hot summer in Hamburg. It was almost impossible to sleep. I would pay more for some place with aircon.

The best Generator in my opinion is in Venice, Italy (: great accommodations

I liked the receptionist reception, the bar, the beautiful view of my room 207 overlooking the central station (Hauptbahnhof). The room did not please me so much because the 7 Dutch boys sharing my room had a lot of beers all over the room and the floor was sticking under my feet. At 5:30 in the morning he returned to the room and the smell of alcohol, noise !! Impossible to sleep! I was there on December 23, 2017 only one night fortunately. Otherwise I love this hostel. The Beatles have left their scent "summertime" ...!

Although in the description he says he speaks Spanish I did not find anyone who will speak it there

Comfy beds. Decent price. Location is good. Atmosphere and staff was nice. Really really small bathrooms with no hand soap. Laundry a bit pricy.

The rooms are quite small and toilets even smaller, but nothing is missing and the security seems reasonable. The breakfast is okay and the bar has no problems as well.

We had a private room that was ridiculously small. The ensuite bathroom was very very close to what you can find on an airplane, plus it smelled really bad. You won't have a wardrobe and beds are too short. Lots of different people work at the reception, some of them were nice, some of them weren't. Actually some of them were very rude. Location is great, the main station is super close and ubahn and sbahn station are right around the corner.

The Worst hostel.
The bathroom was small, dirty and smelly( I really don t know if they really clean it or not)
There was a stranger sleeping on my bed and I had arguments with him, I asked the staff to solve the problem but they did nothing to help me.
Also, everything is quite expensive there. You need to pay a lot for luggage storage and snacks and drinks costs three times more expensive than supermarket. I only stayed there for two nights and it was really stressful time.

Very nice and courteous staff! The 24 hour Staffed reception enables you to get help at any time with problems and questions. The room and bed was very clean. In the bar you could have a nightcap or enjoy a really tasty pizza (and many other dishes) at reasonable prices.

All in all, I was very satisfied! I will gladly come again!

Stayed for 2 nights, rooms were comfy enough but there wasn't a curtain for privacy. There was a small makeshift toilet that is too squeezey but they made up for it by having a toilet outside.

Little pricey because it's right next to the train station. Nice bar, good breakfast, friendly staff who speak English

Total garbage was there with the class at the end, and I'm flamboyant how cheap you can make a hostel. Please close the hostel again, it would be better that way.

Everything was OK but the terrible thing was the bathroom, where the ventilation was failed..

Not to be recommended.
Shower and toilet in one and too small - like in prison and everything made of plastic. When showering the whole bathroom was wet due to the bad curtain.
In general, the room furnishings were very poor. No towels or hair dryer, towels to borrow cost 3 euros (no deposit). Constantly stuffy due to the poor ventilation in the room. Opening the window was not an option because roasting fat and the like trickled into our room from a kitchen below our window.
The beds were relatively comfortable but that was the only thing that wasn't fundamentally bad, besides the mediocre hotel WiFi.
The room had no safe, nor did the reception.
The kicker is about to fall apart.
The barman ripped us off. The happy hour was advertised on posters posted in the hotel for 7 days a week and he says it doesn't exist on weekends.
He probably pocketed the extra money we paid himself.
We were 5 minutes over checkout time and had to pay 20 euros per person - usury.
The key cards just never work. You have to put them in 6-7 times each time until the doors open. If it weren't for the biggest problem, these cards would only unlock your own room. But without the cards you can't even get in or out of this hotel.
The hotel staff was neutral / indifferent to unfriendly.
We couldn't sleep well - it was too loud. And when the door of the room slams you are afraid the walls will break in.
All in all, I am very dissatisfied and in retrospect would have preferred to spend the night in the A and O at the Reeperbahn.

The bathrooms were way too small.
Woke up the others who slept in the room because the safes were under the other beds and they sound very loud when you pull them out.
Had to wait quite a long time to check in, although there were more in the staff.
But apart from that, I really liked the common areas! Good bar and good breakfast!
And the staff was nice as soon as you got help.

Generator is good for the stay. I'll have no problems, the rooms are clean and it's 1 minute from the train station

Double room with private bathroom: the bathroom is all plastic like that of a motor home inside the room. Smell of sewage all the time inside it. Little water pressure in the shower. The double bed are two simple beds together (mattresses, sheets and duvet all of a square). It does not have televisions in the room or closet. To leave the suitcases you can pay at a box office. Breakfast is not included in the price of the room. The only free and good thing is the internet connection that works very well. It has 100 meters from the central train station that connects you with the whole city and the country.

It's a hotel with multiple people staying in your room. Plain and simple...

The rooms were scandalous. Toilets and showers much too small, garbage cans not emptied, dirt on the floor and on the edges of the bed (rooms were for school classes, rooms for 6).
Windows only open when they are tilted due to the child safety lock, there are no other ventilation options, so it quickly became stuffy.
The tables at breakfast were very dirty, hardly cleaned.
I wouldn't go again.

Not recommended! Rooms weren't clean. In the bathroom there were indefinable stains on the shelf, especially since our toilet suddenly stopped working on the first day and when we asked for repairs at reception, we were stopped and nothing happened until the end of our stay. The bathroom itself is much too small and resembles a camping toilet with a shower that is much too small and cramped.

Value for money = zero.
160 euros for a twin bed room without breakfast and dirty. In addition, the WiFi does not work on every mobile phone and that one could not sleep properly at night because the heavy room doors slammed loudly and even the walls shook a little.

Another minus point are the locked windows that you couldn't even open to air.

The only positive thing about this stay at the Generator Hostel Hamburg was the great location. Although it was very loud in the morning and at night because of the trains.

Well located hostel although the area leaves something to be desired, the double room has a private bathroom, a plastic box in one corner of the room. The beds are comfortable and the decor simple. Very close to the central station. Young atmosphere.

We were eight people and for that we had such a small bathroom where not even one person could actually fit in .. but that was ok. Most of the time we were in Hamburg. But what bothered us the most was that it was announced everywhere that there was a trunk in which you can stow the suitcase after check-out. Our train only came in the evening and we had to check out at 10 a.m. Now we went down to the front desk and got! Not even nice! said that the trunk is only available for groups. If 8 people are not a group, I don't know ...
Luckily we were able to stow the suitcases at the main train station. But we didn't think that's ok!

They don't provide anything but bed sheets. Make you pay for everything. I was afraid they would ask me to pay for the toilet paper.

A very good and cheap opportunity to visit Hamburg for a weekend. The rooms are clean, it is very quiet in the evenings and everything has been thought of, e.g. B. steel boxes to accommodate the clothes. You should have a padlock for this, but you can also buy it on site. It is appropriately furnished: bathroom and toilet are in separate, very narrow rooms, simple bunk beds and breakfast.

So if you have no problem sleeping with several strangers in the room and / or who speak English, you will find good accommodation here.

We had some issues with beds already occupied and keys that opened doors.

Great place to stay! Clean and pretty central location. But there are no towels and no soap in the bathroom so remember to bring your own!

a typical 4-bed youth hostel room was offered us first even though we had booked a basic double bed room. They "graded us up". But luckily, after we complained, we were moved into the room we booked which was clean but nothing special.

Never again. I've stayed in hostels in Amsterdam and Malta. This was the worst. Co Ed rooms (not Informed on check in), tiny bathroom. Turn shower on everything gets wet, and it smells bad. Not a community feel. Great location across from train station, but area itself is full of sketchy people loitering.

The double was totally spartan, not even a TV. Whole place felt a bit out of sync. Lots of door slamming. Probably not what I would recommend.

The central location was amazing. The rooms were tidy and spacey and the only thing that keeps it from 5 out of 5 stars is that we had to go down for some toilet paper, which wasn't refilled before got to the room and that the key card didn't work until we got down to the receptionist a second time

My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights last week. The hostel is super central. Directly opposite the main train station! So after a long journey you only have to cross the street once and you're there. Great! Everything is easy to reach from the hostel. The main station is one of the main transport hubs. From there you can easily go anywhere without having to change trains ten times. In addition, almost all public transport goes directly to the main station. There is a long promenade with restaurants and kiosks near the hostel. So also for the physical well-being is taken care of. You are not allowed to take food or alcohol with you to the hostel, but that's understandable.

But now to the room:
Our room was very bright and super clean! Everything you need. I thought it was a bit of a shame that there wasn't a closet, but I think it's fine for 2 nights. It was also very important to us that we have our own bathroom. But I have to honestly say that I was a bit scared when I saw it ... The bathroom was tiny and without a window. When I closed the door, I felt very cramped. So we always left the door open. The shower head couldn't be removed either, it was screwed on tightly. If it weren't for the bathroom, we'd love to come back and stay longer. Hence my question: are you planning to enlarge the bathroom? I've read my way through the reviews a bit and a lot of people have criticized it.
