Located in the Anfoushi area built by Sultan Qaitbay during the Mamluk era to secure Alexandria from the coast consists of the main castle building surrounded by a square surrounded by a wall, is currently considered a major shrine in the city and attached to a small museum including some ancient excavations of extinct marine animals. Recently the development of the castle area has been established a number of restaurants and cafes next to it, and adjacent to the castle area yacht club and aquatic neighborhoods and there is a popular market for the sale of souvenirs, coral reefs and sea shells. It is a very fun place to visit and relax and be very busy during summer time.

Citadel of Sultan Qaytbay in Alexandria

Citadel of Sultan Qaytbay in Alexandria
The Citadel of Qaitbay is one of the most important defensive forts on the Mediterranean coast.
When Sultan Qaytbay visited the city of Alexandria in 882 AH / 1477 CE to inspect its walls, towers and fortifications, he went to the site of the old lighthouse and ordered to build on its old basis a tower known later as Qalaat or Tabiyyah Qaitbay, and the construction was completed two years after the date of construction. The fortress to fortify the city of Alexandria and protect it from external aggression, especially from the Ottoman Empire, which began to change the direction of its conquests from Europe to the Islamic East. And historical sources indicate that the castle was built with some of the old discarded lighthouse stones, and not in the same place only, and that the lighthouse itself was built with some ruins of ancient Pharaonic cities
The castle consists of a rectangular area of 150 mx 130 m, surrounded by the sea on three sides, and the castle has a main entrance on the southwestern side.
The castle contains the walls and the main tower in the northwestern side, and the walls are divided into an inner and an external wall, the inner wall includes the soldiers' barracks and weapon stores, and the outer wall of the castle includes defensive towers on the four sides that rise to the level of the wall except for the eastern wall, which includes defensive openings For soldiers.
The castle consists of three square floors, and in the corners of the tower there are four semi-circular towers that end at the top with prominent balconies, and these towers include slots for shooting arrows on two levels, and the first floor is occupied by the castle mosque, which consists of a courtyard, four iwans and defensive corridors that allow soldiers to pass easily through Castle defense operations
As for the second floor, it contains corridors, halls and internal rooms, and it includes the third floor (the seat of Sultan Qaytbay), in which he used to sit to see the ships on a day's march from Alexandria covered by a cross cellar, and on this floor there is an oven for preparing bread as well as a mill to grind grain for the soldiers residing in the castle. The castle has a huge cistern to store fresh water for the use of the castle s residents.
Since its construction, Qaitbay Citadel is considered one of the most important castles in the region, so it has been of interest to sultans and rulers throughout the ages.
In the Mamluk era
Sultan Qansuh al-Ghuri paid great attention to this castle, as he increased the protection system, weapons and ammunition.
And in the era of the Ottomans,
The Ottoman rulers preserved this castle and made it a place for their soldiers. The Ottomans considered the castle a main gate for Egypt on the northern coast, so they tightened the protection system in it. When the Ottoman Empire weakened, the protection system weakened with it, so France, led by Napoleon, was able to seize the castle and the city of Alexandria .. And that was in 1789 AD.
During the reign of Muhammad Ali Pasha, the walls of the castle were renewed and strengthened, and some developments were added to suit the castle's new defense system for the nineteenth century AD, as it was equipped with coastal cannons and several forts spread along the northern coast of Egypt.
The castle continued to be a subject of concern to Muhammad Ali's successors until the year 1299 AH / 1882 CE when the Urabi Revolution broke out in Egypt and the British fleet struck Alexandria, destroying its castles, infecting its forts, and causing severe damage and cracking in the castle.
In 1904, the Committee for the Preservation of Arab Antiquities repaired the damage caused to the castle by the British occupation of Egypt.
