I just love visiting Alexandria in winter. Qaitbay Citadel is a must to see if this is your first time to the city. I loved being there with my friends. But it is really sad that there are not enough boards to tell the story of this historical place. I would say that the price doesn't match the place ambience, too expensive to pay that amount for a single ticket for a place shamefully neglected. Still the Citadel is a must to see.

Absolutely to go and visit this fort which replaces The Ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria there are numerous rooms where the Mamelukes sultans lived here in this castle built between 1477 and 1480. excellent experience also at the museum of the Institute of Marine Biology where are collected some findings from both the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, in particular the thing that struck me was a siren that is not as you think that in Greek mythology the siren was identified as a woman with a fish tail, instead the siren if you go to see in this museum you will discover that it is really a fish.

This castle is located at the end of Pharos Island, in the far west of Alexandria. It was constructed in the place of the old Manar of Alexandria, which was destroyed in the year 702 AH following the devastating earthquake that occurred during the reign of Sultan Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun.
Sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaytbay started building this castle in the year 882 AH and finished building it in 884 AH. The reason for his interest in Alexandria was the large number of direct threats to Egypt by the Ottoman Empire, which threatened the entire Arab region, and the Mamluk Sultan Qansuh al-Ghouri took care of the castle, increasing its importance and shipping it with weapons.

A really nice place to check out.
On the coast directly.
Can take up to 2 hrs as it is a huge place.
U can see inside the old ways of defences vs invadors, the kings room, the merchand rooms, the execution room etc...

However be careful members of the police will tag along explaining things to u like a guide and in the end expect a payment. Even if you did not ask them to guide you.
