09/10/2017. What a beautiful work this cable-stayed bridge spans the Gulf of Corinth Strait and connects the Peloponnese to the east of mainland Greece. In many ways, very similar to the Millau bridge in France except that it is shorter than 200m. It is also of French design. 14 euros crossing. Views taken from Antirio and the citadel of Naupactus.

Anyone who wants to cross the bridge should be prepared to pay 13.30 one way which I consider a rip off. I was going specifically to see the bridge from the Loutraki area and it wasn't worth it.
The Bridge of Rio - Antirrio or, officially, the "Charilaos Trikoupis" Bridge is a cabled bridge that was completed and came into operation in 2004 between Rio (suburb of Patra) and Antirrio, connecting the Peloponnese with the western mainland Greece and up and more broadly with the rest of Europe. It is part of the Ionian Highway (A5) and European Route 55 (E55) and was built by the French company Vinci.
The Rio Antirrio Bridge, officially the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge, is one of the world's longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges and longest of the fully suspended type. It crosses the Gulf of Corinth near Patras, linking the town of Rio on the Peloponnese peninsula to Antirrio on mainland Greece by road.
It does not justify the money needed to travel the distance proportionally. For anyone who is in a hurry it is advantageous for the ferry that you may lose time but with the money you want for a simple crossing you go and come. For me only if I'm in a hurry or the ferry is cut. Nice spectacular especially at night when lit but up there. Definitely a huge project and expensive but the 13 + is not a little over 2+ kilometers. The 10 hour (13 go up) that they used to put in earlier in the summer for 2 and a few months, became 1 and 1 week this year, just TRAGIC !!!
Nothing to say for the scenographic vision that gives a distant view and crosses it. The only flaw is the cost of the transfer. For the rest, nothing can be said.
It is a fantastic project !!!! It is one of the largest bridges in the world. With the spectacular white pillars in the blue sea ... !!!!!!! I traveled at noon.
It is a really modern bridge with elegant lines! It reminds of a slim sail boat. The cost to cross the bridge is 13. 50euros and you can ask the return card to pay less if you do a return ticket (you do not pay within 3 hours) , but if you want to cross by a ferry boat it will cost 6.5euros and you can enjoy even in a better way the bridge from close. The trip is about 15 minutes. During the week end from 21.00 till 00.00 it is lit in a blue colour, a scenery that you really don't want to miss. Maybe getting a coffee in the bars underneath.
The bridge is very beautiful and deserves to be seen. It is not cheap to go by car or other vehicle ( 13 for the car) but I advise you to go there on foot. There is a pedestrian walkway, safe, free and very scenic.
Beautiful bridge of touristic utility - which facilitates trade by far, also direct travelers to Greece central - northern and vice versa without having to go around the side of Corinto. Before the goods and people bridge they had to travel by ship, lengthening the journey time and facing higher costs. The bridge is also visible from the deck of ships arriving and / or departing from and / or from Patras.
One of the largest cable-stayed bridges in the world !!! Surely the Greeks paid too much to have this short transport to the opposite bank !!! However, it is still a reliable, beautiful and impressive work !!! It gives you confidence and only when you see it and awe when you are at the top of it!
It is unlikely that a cable-stayed bridge, albeit a two-kilometer one, can surprise a contemporary with a full set of 23 pairs of chromosomes It does not save even illumination that is activated after ten at night.
Technological achievement that unites the Peloponnese with Western Greece. It is worth to find time and cross it on foot, as well as to visit the exhibition space that operates in the central part of the Bridge.
The Rio - Antirrio Bridge or, officially, the "Charilaos Trikoupis" Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that was completed and put into operation in 2004 through which the connection between Rio and Antirio was achieved as well as the connection of the Peloponnese with western mainland Greece and up and wider with the rest of Europe It is part of the Ionian Road and was built by the French company Vinci. The price of crossing the bridge 13.50 euros (2019/08). Ferry price 6.70 euros. If you do not hurry, use the ferry, for terrestrial interesting experience. Passage time approx. 20 min., Embarkation and disembarkation 2x 10-15 minutes.
Wonderful feat of engineering. A symbol of Patras and its surroundings. Shame for the prices, especially for locals that may travel through it more than once. With more helpful prices it would contribute even further to the mobility of the area i guess. Allez-retour time is a much restrictive. It makes a quick visit to nafpakto fast but its only worth it if you share the car with others.
Because of the price, the ferries are a much much better alternative if you are willing to trade off some of your time.
A marvel of engineering, a jewel of our country, is worth visiting all at least once in your life .... !!!! A few words about the construction from the page of the company BRIDGE .: Innovative studies and offshore construction methods have been used to make this unique multi-opening cable-stayed bridge a reality. It is worth noting, among other things, the adoption and implementation of the shallow foundation solution on a reinforced bottom, the continuous and fully suspended deck along the entire length of the bridge (2,252 m), the large seismic damping system, equipped with special anti-seismic suspension cables, expansion joints that can receive large displacements along the axis of the bridge and transversely.
The head of the design and construction was the French company Vinci in collaboration with the largest Greek construction companies (Aktor, J&P and Athena).
Geophysical Environment of construction of the Project
The environment in which the bridge was built presents a combination of natural adversities that makes this project quite complex, such as the width of the Strait which is about 2,500 meters, the depth of the sea (up to 65 meters) combined with the deep loose alluvial layers the possibility of intense seismic activity, tectonic movements and extremely strong winds.
Subsoil
The relief of the bottom shows steep slopes towards the two shores and a large horizontal level at a depth of about 60 meters below sea level. The investigation of the first 100 meters of the seabed showed the absence of a rocky substrate. According to geological studies, the thickness of the sediments consisting of thick clay layers mixed, in some places, with fine sand and silt exceeds 500 meters.
Earthquakes & tectonic movements
The Corinthian Gulf and more specifically the northern coast of the Peloponnese is characterized by the existence of a large number of active faults, such as Xylokastro, Aigio, Eliki, Psathopyrgos, Patras etc. reflected on the relevant map.
The faults are located the majority of earthquakes recorded in the area as a result of tectonic movements between Central Greece and the Peloponnese that reach a few millimeters per year.
The seismic hazard analysis concluded that an earthquake of near magnitude up to 6.5 on the Richter scale is crucial for the definition of seismic activity in the project area. In the map, the circles and squares correspond to historical and recorded by earthquakes of magnitude greater than 5.5 on the Richter scale.
Winds
Due to the morphology of the surrounding mountains, the Rio-Antirrio Strait is known for its frequent and strong winds. The reference wind speed (hourly average at 10 meters altitude, recovery period 120 years) was estimated at 30 m / sec based on a rich database of wind measurements.
Study loads
Seismic design loads are defined in the form of a response spectrum at sea level. The maximum ground acceleration is 0.48 g and the maximum spectral acceleration is 1.2 g for periods between 0.2 s and 1.0 s. This range is considered to correspond to an earthquake with a recovery period of 2,000 years or to a seismic event with a 5% probability of exceeding for a lifespan of 120 years. In the following figure, the study spectrum of the Bridge is compared with that required by the Greek Earthquake Regulation (EAK 2000).
Given the tectonic movements in the area and the life of the bridge of 120 years, the conventional specifications required the Bridge to be able to receive possible movements of faults up to 2 meters in each direction, horizontally and / or vertically between two successive pedestals, in combination with a vertical slope of 1/500 of the pillars.
The reference wind speed (hourly average at 10 meters altitude, recovery period 120 years) obtained was 32 m / sec. At the level of the deck (57 meters above its surface
The Rion-Antirion Bridge across the Ionic Sea in Greece is more than 2 km long, longer than the Golden Gate in the US. It connects the 2 old strategic defense towns Rion on one side and Antirion on the other side. The bridge is built on only 4 pilons, plus metal strings and cords, so that its flexibility and strength adapts to the rift movements under the sea (very active in earthquakes). There is a tax which is not cheap (65 eur for a bus), but you can also just take a photo and then....take the ferry :)
A project of utmost importance, linking solid Greece with the Peloponnese. The price is 13.5 for cars (the truth is a bit prickly) and 1.9 for the machines, at last a passage in Greece that corresponds to the real value in proportion to the cars, the machines
A great project stands imposing in the Gulf of Corinth and unites Central Greece with the Peloponnese. This time I took the ship and enjoyed the bridge in all its glory. The ship passes by and under a bridge and I had time to take pictures and videos. The cost for a car is 6.30
I do not think there is a person who will not be impressed seeing the "Bridge" for the first time. You are awed by the size and architecture. There is a sidewalk at the ends of the two streams and if the weather allows, a walk will reward you. A ferry ride will give you a better picture. Of course, the fast track offered by the project is probably the most important of all. The one star that I cut despite the impressive ones that I wrote, is for the price of the passage.
Fantastic job .. It turns the drivers out of a lot of trouble ... I just last night and the lights were off without being able to photograph it ... The price is a bit dingy
