The worst electric company with no option of changing company s. Highly recommend you don t move to garland because of this ONLY electric company. Definitely our biggest mistake. Hope this helps y all save money!
They deserve a class action lawsuit for the way that they run things here in garland. Best advice buy your home elsewhere because when you move in you won't have a choice but to get power from them. It's like a mafia shaking you down for protection each month. I have friends in dallas who have bigger homes and pay a third of what I pay. We need a choice of energy providers therefore it doesn't become a mafia. I don't see how this has gone on for so long.
Well..... the electricity bill for the apartment was expensive average (2 bed, 1 bath), did not complaint for this, 2 adults, 2 kids. We had to leave the apartment, but did not vacate it because the rental agreement, I used to go to the apartment for the weekends for the last two months of the agreement. The strange thing is that the electricity bill has higher than when we were living there. I called asking for an explanation, they were so rude, and told me that I have to pay no matter what. I did pay, but... PLEASE IF YOU CAN... STAY AWAY FROM Garland Power & Light.
I am not even a city of Garland residence yet. I called to inquire about the deposit options and spoke with a Latisha who was beyond rude. Not only was she rude, but she hung up on me. Due to me already signing my lease I am stuck in Garland for one year, but best believe after how rude this woman was, I will NEVER be city of Garland resident again. If you do not like your job, quit.
My waterbill reads 7836. My water meter reads 7794 (on the day I received my waterbill). Either these people cannot read their own meters or they are billing me for 4200 gallons of water I have yet to use. Online account (which I rarely use) comes back disabled upon login. WTH?
I had to talk to several different people in multiple departments to get them to fix a damaged external wire. If it were not for the guy in dispatch, Chris, finally helping me I would just give a 1 star. Train your people better, don't just pull answers out of your culo.

Worst company ever! I paid my outrageous bill on Friday then got my electric cut off Tuesday because of a added on deposit for getting my electric cut off last year. The deposit was $190!!! Are you serious?!?!?? I already paid $200, and I tel you I have a small apartment. They won t work with me or nothing and I have 2 small babies and it s freezing. Great, great company. Stupid and ridiculous, moving out of garland ASAP!!
Shut my water off midday with no notice or billing beforehand. I work 9-5 and by 6 there was nobody that could help. Terrible.
Terrible power company. Too bad they have a monopoly in Garland, due to State Laws. Since they know that you can't have another power company, they have no desire for good customer service or prices. This is the worst thing about a pretty good town!!
More problems. Used bill pay from Wells Fargo to pay my insanely high electric bill like I always do because I refuse to pay the extra fee GP&L charges to pay online. The request was made on 9/14 and the check was delivered to GP&L on 9/21. Of course GP&L has no record of it. If I could give this company negative stars I would. Somebody tell me how to fight this monopoly of a company. I need to contact my local state representative and a lawyer because the things this company does have got to be illegal in some form. I would stay out of Garland if this is your only choice for electricity.
This is the worst company ever!!!! I have also had the worst customer service experience ever. I had cancelled my service after 10 years due to moving from Garland to Mckinney. This was my parents old house that I was living in.Well the closing on the old house got pushed back and the service needed to be out back on. First they states I had to establish new service and pay $230 for a week of service. Then they states they couldn't set me up again because my dad had ownership of the house. I have lived there 10 years with no late payments. I asked how I was able to get service in my name 10 years ago. The lady on the phone was unable to say anything except for it might have been less strict then. It is ridiculous. I literally needed service for 5 more days and everyone was rude and non helpful. This is the worst company I have every dealt with. Plus, they have monopolized Garland and you don't have a choice
I have very little to complain about. My bills are accurate and not outrageous. Even the summer.months had me pleasently surprised. Texas is the only place I've lived in the country that allows choice of power company. And before we moved to Garland those supplier bills were ALWAYS out of control. Moving to Garland and having city power is like 90% of the country so it didnt bother me at all. And I'm only paying $50-$75 more a month for a 1600 sf house than I did an 800 sf apartment.

After Hurricane Irma hit. Workers from this company came to our little town of Bartow to help us out. They are the nicest company out there. Thank you for your generosity.
These peoole are scammers they dont send notices they just cut your light out . for know reason even if you been paying on time. Then charge you and arm and leg to cut it back on

Don t even think about moving to garland. Garland electricity is extremely expensive expect to get bills like 500 or so on a single family home from a 1400 sgft home
They are con artist. They charge $200 deposit just because but you can get around that if you do a credit check for $10. But then they charge another $200 deposit for not having a Texas id or drivers license which should be illegal considering what if you cannot get either of those. They charged me $200 for not having it then turned my lights off because i did not pay $30 of the $200 then took more than 24 hours to turn them back on. I called and they were very rude and then charged me to turn them back on when they never should have turned them off. They are the absolute worst.

Horrible uncaring jerks that run a monopoly. They deserve to be sued. If another option were allowed they would close immediately because everyone would jump to the new option. They could care less about customer service. Every one of them are complete idiots. Because they have a monopoly they can do whatever they want. The only option is to move out of garland which isn't bad since Garland doesn't have much to offer anyway. It certainly doesn't have a good electric company. Poorly run, mismanaged morons.
I have been a customer for over 27 years and same account...Yes the prices are a little high but I will take that in heartbeat compared to other companies...when there is an EMERGENCY they are the 1st ones there to help get services restored ASAP...other companies take their damn sweet time...so eventually you get what you pay for...Thank you Garland Power and light for being a great electric Company!!
I called in and spoke with Iliana. She would not answer any of my concerns and just kept on repeating herself. I might of well have just talked to the automated system.
We had a leak in our sprinkler system for several hours and lost tons of water due to the problem. GPL took care of us by helping with the water bill. Thank you for having great customer service!

The comments about this being a monopoly are 100% accurate, and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Bills are routinely padded, and they can charge whatever they want. Feel like complaining? Don't bother. Your comments will fall on deaf ears. This company is the #1 reason we're moving out of Garland to Richardson (where you can choose your service provider).
A perfect example of government bureaucracy. Take the ability of citizens to choose their own power company and then charge ridiculous fees, provide poor service, and non-competitive rates. This is a complete rip off that makes me regret living in Garland.

GP&L I ve only lived in Garland a little over a year. I ve had several outages. The longest outages have happened during the hottest parts of the Summer. There s nothing residents can do and we get no updates on the progress of solving the issues if it falls on a weekend (both long outages have been on weekends). GP&L thank goodness I only rent in Garland, and haven t bought a house here.
If there was a 0 star rating, I would give them that. Worst customer service in the history of ever. We moved here from out of state, my husband has not had time to switch over his license because he works all the time so not only do they keep $200 for a deposit, they also add another $200!!! Are you kidding me? This is a racket and we will never buy a house in Garland for this reason alone. Sad that you could have people moving here to your city but with this kind of hospitality, I will run away fast!!! Hope the rest of DFW isn't this rude!!
People should be able to choose there own light company..Garland is a bogus little town thats taken people rights of being able to choose what ever service company that they choose.The workers are incompetent to there customers and they are unconcerned of the well being of there customers as well as helping us meet the requirements . Someone should report them to the supreme courts for breaking one of our amendments and thats the right to practice and use our freedom of speech and choice.

I literally HATE this electric company. I had to pay $200 for a deposit regardless of my credit. Then a $50 activation fee and they didn't even come out to the complex. My bill for 13 days was over $300 smh...There is no after hours or emergency number... they need to be shut down! I wish I could give no stars
I've never had an issue with them. In fact, they're really easy to work with and provide extensions when needed, hassle free and no questions asked. I've forgotten to pay on time before and had service reconnected same day. My household of 4 lives in a 1500 sq ft home and my electric, water, trash, and sewage is almost always under 275/month.
The sole reason I'm moving out of Garland...after reporting them to the PUC.

I'm only speaking from my experience guys..since I've been with garland right company..they've always been very nice kind and understanding to me...having ways that they could assist me with helping me on my bill at times...i don't work for them at all...but I DO understand where you guys are coming from experiencing from other companies.....
VERY FRUSTRATING! And an ILLEGAL MONOPOLY! WAY too TRIGGER HAPPY to turn off utilities of hardworking families and PAYING CUSTOMERS!! Defaults username of "customer service" website to ALL CAPITALS! This causes people to get LOCKED OUT of their online accounts preventing them from having accurate information. This company won't adjust pay dates to match pay dates of customers simplifying the process for everyone. The company outsources payments costing their customers $2.95 every time they make a payment online or on the phone. Where are the options? Competition between companies brings down rates and ensures better customer service, but Garland, for reasons I can't understand, CHOOSES TO BE HELD HOSTAGE BY THIS PRICE GAUGING STIFF NECKED COMPANY!
The fact you have to pay a fee to pay your utility bill online is pretty ridiculous.
I already don t have an option of who I use for electricity so the least you can do is make this a free service.
The new western union upgrade has made it so difficult to pay online. I wish Garland power and light would just do there own pay online instead of a third party. Such a pain to deal with any more. Yes I agree wish we had our own option to choose what electric company we want to use...
Worthless, wish there was another choice in companies. This company is lazy. Called and the lady gave me wrong info because she did not want to deal with me. Contractor told me that it is the cities issue and I needed to call them back. Each time I called, morning or noon, I waited on hold 15 minutes the first time and been on hold at least 21 minutes second time. Terrible service.
The electric utility situation in Garland is really bad. These guys have an unfair monopoly and they charge whatever amount they want, as a result the customers are the ones who suffer. Moreover they charge around $3 for online payment and take $1.5 if you pay in cash at their location. I feel I am being ripped off here.
I love everything about Garland P&L. I absolutely appreciate that the fees for service are a lot lower than I expect each month. After 5 years, I still freak out right before opening the monthly statement only to feel relief upon seeing the 200 dollar mark. We installed a swimming pool 3 years ago, and during the summer months, it's still approximately 250.
It probably helps that the house has foam insulation.
Garland shut our water off because we were a week late on our payment. We are a family and have two little boys, who can't shower now until we physically drive by the office, make a payment, and wait for them to turn everything back on. They gave no warning- no phone call, no email, no physical mail. They just shut us off.
On top of all this, the payments we are making are outrageous. Never in my life have we paid such high electric, water, or sewage bills. Our bills are over $400 for a small, 3 bedroom house. Yet Garland will not allow us to choose another provider such as TXU or Reliant. This is a corrupt bureaucratic government monopoly that basically amounts to extra tax. As if our $300 per month property tax wasn't high enough already.
If I would've known how awful the utility services of Garland are, I would have had second thoughts about moving here. We need to vote some people out of office and take back control of our homes.
