I took our puppy to GSVH because xrays showed a possible obstruction in her intestines. Nothing was found during the exploratory abdominal surgery. When speaking with Dr. Kramer (intern) when we visited our puppy, we asked several times how it was possible that some obstruction was seen on her xrays but nothing was found during the surgery. Her explanation left us more confused: "It was an artifact". When asked what she meant by that, she could not support her statement with any explanation, other than "it's hard to explain". We never received ANY follow up calls from the hospital after our puppy was released -- no phone calls to ask how she was feeling, if she was eating, any biopsy results, etc. For $4700 in hospital fees, you would expect better care. Everyone I spoke to about this told me I should have gone to North Shore instead. If my puppy ever needs urgent medical care again, that's where I will take her next time!

Very good and compassionate care. Great staff. Clean and modern. My baby wound up dying but I really have to say that they were so compassionate and made it better for me
They even have me a nice footprint keepsake box and will handle her cremation. I would give them a thousand stars if I could

Great experience at this Animal Hospital the neurologist specialist, is absolutely wonderful, Dr. Bernier. She did neuro surgery, on my little (big) boy, who could not move any of his legs and in just a couple days after his neck and back surgery, he was as good as new. These people are truly angels.

First and last experience at this vet!! My family vet referred us to Gardenstate for a Neurologist opinion.......for the past few weeks, my dog was showing signs of not being able to use one of his front legs, losing his balance and his leg buckling in when he tried to walk. Our local vet thought it might be a pinched nerve in his neck/back because of a possible slipped/herniated disc. We went to Gardenstate for an opinion. They suggested they do an x-ray and if that doesn't show anything, an MRI and we agreed...........nothing showed up on test, everything normal..........4K later, their not sure what is wrong with him........went to pick him up last night, waited in the room for my dog and the vet.....the door opened with the aid was bringing my poor dog in on his knees, it was heartbreaking and horrible that the aid didn't use anything to help him walk, I was mortified!!!! What kind of place is this???? Disgusting!! I've have had dogs most of my life and been to several vets, never did I experience anything like this.............think twice before you visit Gardenstate!

Over the last 10 years we have used them for 3 different dogs. They were great each time. The first time we went there for surgery with referral from our Vet that our dog had hip dysplasia, vet had showed us xrays that looked to us like a ball half out of socket. GSVS vet said she might get it as she is a Lab/mix prone to hip dysplasia, but after the exam in front of us he said that's all well and good but its her knee that is hurting her. Gave us 2 options of knee surgery, $ or $$$. We chose $. After healing her knee was as good as new till she died. Our other 2 dogs had similar great experiences with their problems, each time saving their lives. we can't say enough good things about them.

Used them 4 months earlier for my 18 year old cat and everything seemed fine. Recently my cat appeared to have had a stroke, I called local vet in NJ and asked if they thought I should see a neurologist. They agreed and since it was a Saturday, recommended that I first reach out to North Star Vet in Robbinsville, NJ, if no neurologist there, then recommended that I reach out to Red Bank Vet - no neurologist there, and lastly, that I reach out to Garden State. I phoned, asked if they had a neurologist there that I needed an immediate consult. Was told yes, but was given to a er vet. I asked him to let me see the neurologist and was told I had no appointment and she was busy. Finally, the er vet said he would speak with her but I could not. Over 1 hr. later I was given her opinion and then billed for both doctors which I refused to pay. Apparently, they prey upon those of us grief stricken over our pets. Would never go there again.

Reviewing a specialist vet is difficult as, often, the news you get is not good and it's a very emotional visit. Unfortunately that was the case for us.

That being said the staff and doctors were upfront about the likelihood of different diagnosis, straightforward about what tests they could do, and honest about treatment possibilities.

The end diagnosis for our cat was sadly far from what we wanted, but the staff at Garden State Veterinary Specialists did everything possible to prepare us and inform us about options so we could choose how to proceed.

I would never bring my dogs there again due to The internist that called me with the news that my 22 month old pup had stage 5 leukemia. It was so upsetting..as you can imagine.. When I asked her if an oncologist had reviewed Sammy's labs. She sounded like she was insulted that I questioned her, went on to say that she has been a vet for 20-30 years. Her response was uncaring and rude...being in healthcare myself ,this is not how a professional should behave.

Worse place ever, stuff not friendly. Don't take your pet there, they just care about the money. My poor dog lost two eyes there catching infection during the surgery. Recovery and fighting infection was over 3 months. Not to mention Cost over $ 8,000. They don't give you other options just most expensive. Keep away from the place, its so many good vets in the area.

I have been going to Garden State for all three of my dogs since 2000. Yes they are a little expensive, BUT IT IS A 24 emergency ROOM for your pet. You can at anytime purchase pet insurance and you would not have $5,000 bills. lets not forget the patient cannot talk to the doctor and most likely has been sick longer than you have realized. Animals life expectancy is much shorter and comes on fast and strong and we do not expect or want the out come. I know this first hand with the death of my first Rottie. I was devastated, I got the blood tests here at Garden State and I couldnt believe what I was hearing "Cancer" 6-9 months with Chemo 3-6months without. Worst Sunday ever.. Even after the blood work, xrays, biopsy. I still rushed to my Regualr Vet the next morning and had the same blood work performed and an xray there. It was the same. Knowing what the final outcome would be, I opted for Chemo the next day. By that night, it spread to the brain and I had to put my first dog down. I am sure he was sick for months but dogs hid pain very well, they want to please their owners. Could I have blamed the Vet because they told me I have 3-6 months? Maybe.. but they are only guessing. What I can tell you is that they gave me a private room for over 6 hours, let me invite my family, friends, my employees and we feed him chicken and vanilla icecream. And we cried and laughed. And the staff and Doctor was amazing. I held my 120lb Rottie in my arms as he took his last breathe, and I will be forever grateful for how I was treated here. I later adopted two more dogs and I have always been treated great.

I took my dog there the other night because her muzzle/face felt and looked swollen. The receptionist was extremely nice but the tech doing the intake barely said a word to me, just asked questions and then took her to the back, which I later learned, put her in a kennel, which I didn t like at all. She could ve waited with me until the doctor was ready. The doctor, Dr. Coffey, later came out and told me that she wasn t swollen (even though I could feel the swelling and I pointed it out to her). I took her home and she proceeded to get worse, so I called them and asked if I could send pictures for a doctor to look at- the receptionist that answered seemed annoyed but said I could send them. No one called me until the morning and even though you could visibly see the swelling in the photo, they said it was too hard to tell and after I explained that she was not doing well they just said they wouldn t be able to know what was causing it but could bring her in if I felt it was necessary. Luckily, they sent her records for the visit to her regular vet, who called me to see what happened- I explained everything to the vet and she said that she needed to be seen (which I was going to do anyway) and it turns out that she WAS swollen and having an allergic reaction to a bug bite or sting and she treated her and now she is 100% better. I will not go back here for emergency treatment.

If you are looking for a vet with both technical expertise and compassion, I would recommend Dr. Linda Dziedzic of Garden State Vet Specialists in Tinton Falls. Our Scottish Terrier, Teddy, had a significant head wound and we brought him to GS and we were fortunate that Dr. Linda was on service. She treated the wound and since Teddy was there overnight, she called us 2X that evening and at 9 the next morning. At our follow up visit, she called us as we waited in the car (Covid) and told us the good news that Teddy was on the mend and further surgery was not needed. The staples were sufficient to close the wound. Thank you for taking such good care of Teddy, and us!

On Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, I adopted two, 9 yr old rescue dogs (1 maltese, 1 shih tzu). On Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018 at approximately 10:30 p.m. the maltese was bleeding profusely from his mouth. My children & I rushed him to Garden State and felt fortunate that it was not very busy. We were greeted politely by the reception desk and told a technician would be out shortly. The women who came out gave me the impression that I was bothering her or that I had just interrupted her dinner. She acted as though all the bleeding or what happened to the dog didn't matter. (I had the underlying feeling she thought I had hurt it.) I had limited information about his prior history, but told them all I knew. We waited in a room for about 15 minutes and a doctor came in to talk to us. She said the dog wouldn't really let her touch his mouth, but she did get a quick look. She saw 2 lesions in his mouth, that could possibly be cancerous and that he had advanced gum disease - so bad that she felt if she touched a tooth, it would fall out. They never suggested sedating him to see what the actual problem was, never offered pain medicine, and didn't give him liquid form or shot of antibiotics. She informed me that they do not do dental work there, so that I should take him home - STILL BLEEDING! - and find a dental specialist in the a.m. They sent me home with CAPSULE SIZE antibiotics to give to a 12 lb. bleeding dog who could barely open his mouth. They are truly some of the most heartless, unsympathetic, cold, people I have ever encountered. No empathy, she just told me to confine him to the kitchen because he was going to bleed on and off all night. THANKS FOR NOTHING! I could have waited until Monday morning because they provided no assistance or temporary fix whatsoever. That was definitely my first and last time there.

This is both a general purpose service, emergency vet and a specialized practice that requires a referral. My dog has come here several times for surgical treatment of her terribly arthritic hips. Friends have also brought their pets here. Staff are professional and build relationships with the pets and their guardians. Big plus: If your pet is receiving treatment over a period of time, rather than sit in the waiting room and worry, you can undertake retail therapy at the nearby Jersey Shore Premium Outlet Mall.

Dr. Edelmann, Dr. Scavelli, the assistants and the front desk girls are so awesome. Dr. E fixed my Bulldogs cherry eye and has been so attentive and caring about her after care. Dr. S literally gave my bully a whole new life after fixing her pallet and trachea issues she can breath and play like a normal dog. thanks garden state Miley Tillman

i felt compelled to write this because other reviews about this vet were harsh and scary. i had an emergency and this was the only vet with a neurology appointment the same day. others wanted me to bring my pet in as an emergency service and the onsite neurologist would only consult--- which means they would charge me considerably more money. this vet gave me a direct appointment with a neurologist no extra fee. the place is clean, the staff is friendly and extremely helpful and compassionate. the dr was knowledgeable, professional, and took the time to answer all of my questions. the same dr performed the mri and the surgery which means that she was with my dog every step of the way. she checked up on him numerous times daily and she was the one who called me each time as well instead of having a staff member do it. my dog had an mri on site that day and surgery immediately after so he didn't need to be knocked out twice. i was called after the mri, and post surgery with updates. i was then called twice a day with updates during my dog's stay for recovery. they have visiting hours from 4-8 with your pet!!!!! you can bring treats and toys etc. they have the option for an onsite application and approval for a credit card if necessary for you to pay your bill. The prices were considerably lower than others suggested online for the same services and surgery which was a relief. they even kept my dog a few days beyond his release date for free until i could get someone to help me lift him in and out of the car and crate when we got home. a truly wonderful experience, and i couldn't have asked for a better dr. do not hesitate to bring your pet in for help.

We have dealt with both the Iselin location and Tinton Falls lately, due to an accident our dog had. Both locations have been very pleasant to deal with, and professional. Wait times can be a bit long, but I would expect that in an E.R. Triage sort of environment. Caring, friendly, and competent!

Open 24/7 they were (relatively) easily accessible- 25min drive. Upon arrival at 9pm on a Sunday night they were able to see us within 5 minutes of arrival. $568 for an X-ray and anti-nausea meds. The receptionist, tech, and Vet were all personable and seemed genuinely concerned about the welfare of our puppy.

I want to clarify that Dr. Glaser was my cat Musette's Oncologist & I know that he said he did all he could for her. I had asked if he could also give her Immunotherapy, but he said no. He called today & I told him about the Lixotinic (which helped build up my cat Tiger developing Siezures in Feb.(Treated at Dongan Hills Vet., I could not afford more Thousands like I was charged in NJ.). Dr. Glaser said he feels Musette's Lymphoma was too advanced.
I still feel Holistic treatments, that can't hurt, should be added. My Tiger is so much better now. In August I had wanted to bring Musette to Dongan Hills also, but worried about the added cost, Now I wish I had.
I sent an email to Dr. Cohen the top Oncologist at Garden State. I got no reply. I just wanted to know her opinion.
(If my Mother had been treated with a Holistic approach She might not have passed 1 month ago!)

Terrible place, money hungry, nobody cares about the pet or the owner.. They are not willing to treat, they tend to scare desperate people who came to the clinic for help with the worst possible condition to get more money out of them. Impossible to find out results of the tests either. Worst experience ever.

Update: after talking to another friend about this place, they had a pet that was treated for a broken bone. Paid $7000 ended up having a torn acl and had to go to another vet for the right surgery. Unbelievable.

Absolutely agree with the majority of the bad reviews. My puppy broke his leg. Right off the bat, before even introduced herself, surgery was brought up and the price. $5000 Than, apologized and introduced herself. All about money. Money up front. Tried credit care. Wasnt covering not even half. Than they proceeded to say theyd take 75% . Didnt have it at that moment. Ended up talking about casting which would be changed every week and Blah blah. Then this was going to cost this and this is going to cost that and this and that. My head was spinning. I told her ok enough about money what about the puppy. Can i just have him back and fixed up with the bandage. Obviously thats all i could afford at 1 am. She said well i didnt want to blind side you. I told her she did the first 10 times she brought up $5000. Oh and that she doesnt make the rules. I told her i understood....end of every conversation about money. Told me it was going to take an hour to an hour and a half for the bandage.....that was at 130.....430 comes around and i finally see my baby. As i pay for the night which was over $600 the one lady proceeds to tell me theyll tske 50% down. After all was said and done. What a joke this place is. And last but not least, very VERY unprofessional.

This place is ONLY about the money. I brought my cat there for a surgery the vet said he had 100% success with, not only did the surgery fail, they caused a blockage and forced me to pay for the corrective surgery. So I paid 800.0 for each surgery. Will never go there again...

Nobody wants to go to the animal hospital but the couple of times I've had to go I have had a pleasant experience. The front desk staff is very reassuring and pleasant. Unfortunately due to covid I could not go in with my dog but the vet tech that brought her in the back took a very detailed history and was very gentle with her. Dr Connolly called me with in 15 minutes and she took the time to answer all my questions and address all my concerns. The Dr brought her back out to me and addressed more of my concerns to make sure we were comfortable.

I brought my 13 year old cat there after an incident with her. I wanted blood work done with results asap. Dr Michelle Huey was the vet at the time. After 4 hours of waiting, I was given blood results and an analysis of it via telephone call. Based on the results I decided to take my cat home with the thought of bringing her back to her regular vet. When I went to pay the fee, I asked for a copy of the blood results. I then noticed that on the results in two separate spots that the species labeled was DOG! I pointed out the error and was told it was common and that the "computer defaults to that". When the tech brought my cat out to leave, he stated that the doctor was going to run the blood again because I was upset. Regardless I took my cat home. An hour later I get a call from the Dr telling me everything was ok with the new blood sample. I asked that the results be emailed to me. Well, new blood results were NOT the same and my cat needs to get blood drawn again. The next day when I called to say I was not going to pay for the blood draw I was told I had to pay. Told them I would put a stop on my credit card and they wouldn't get paid for anything regarding the visit. I could not get past the lies they told to cover themselves. They later called back to give me the refund I requested.
Lesson learned: always get paper results for your animal(not just forward to regular Dr). Always take the time to read the results carefully.

I had to take my kitty Macy from the Iselin location to the Tinton Falls location last Saturday. She had saddle thrombosis and
lost the use of her legs I really appreciated the empathy,, attention and care both Macy and I received that day. Everyone was so kind and so accommodating. As hard as it was to say goodbye, I am glad that I was in the right hands and so was Macy, as she was in mine at the end. Thank you to all the staff and especially Dr. Abud.

This place have no compassion to animals. They are cruel moneymakers.Charged$7500 upfront and literally killed my precious dog.Return her in 4 days with Pneumonia, 105.4 fewer and a huge pressure sore!!!!!!In a few days when I could not see anymore how my baby suffered and we put her to sleep. The doctor again ask us to prepay euthanasia while I was trying to carry my dog out of the car!!!!!!Those people are animal slaughters not the doctors!!!Especially dr Scavelli- the owner.Never, never take your animals there!!!!!!!!

My cat is very ill i explained I was laid off months ago due to covid. I was on a budget and could not afford their prices. I was told there was nothing that they can do. Horrible treatment. They were not helpful at all. No compassion for animals or the people who are going through this covid layoff. I will never go there again. Way to expensive.it was all about the money at the end of the day. Not about the pet going in there for much needed help. They did and xray , IV, and anti nasua medicine that cost about 600.00. They were insensitive to assist in helping me through this or direct me to another place that could help. They just wanted money. In all blood work and all other treatment would've cost close to 3000.00 just for exams which included cardiologist ultra sound, xray, ultrasound of stomach plus meds. Money money money that was all they cared for. Now I have my cat still sick and I finally have a vet appointment for Thursday morning. In hopes that my cat will hopefully be ok. WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE!

Staff is so rude and unprofessional. Ditld not wven know what my boys diagnosis was. And the best part is what kind of vet is afraid of a dog? I dont get it and such nasty people who work there will never go nack ever again and its a little furiating that they take your pet on the back without you . Unreal and disappointing.

What can I say, I took my dog there a bit over 2 w...

What can I say, I took my dog there a bit over 2 weeks ago. They diagnose my dog with Masticatory Muscle Myositis and prescribe him prednisone although it was a mild one. After a week I called the vet that diagnose him Dr. Pintar and told him that he was loosing control peeing, that my dog wasn't himself etc. I wanted to lower the dosage because i thought it was too strong, but the doc didn't agreed so I kept it on it until the 2 weeks was over then I lower the dosage to one pill a day so from 40 ml went to 20 ml and then a few days after lowering the dosage my dog went into shock, lost completely control and i took him to emergency where he died. The doc that saw my dog said it was a drastic change but he couldn't complete his test to see if that was the cause but he felt he had something else besides the muscle deficiency. I just think the doc should have consider my request instead of being so cold and say to keep it on the dosage. I felt his cold treatment when i took my dog in but i didn't really pay no mind. I should of listen to m guts. Maybe they should be more sensitive and listen to owners. My dog was fine before i took him there. Maybe they shouldn't put an animal in such an aggressive medicine like prednisone or be more careful on the dosage that they prescribe. The staff were friendly and the place clean.

This place only cares about charging you top dollar and uses inexperienced and intern vets. They constantly rotate these inexperienced intern vets. They want to run every test under the sun and never come back with firm results. Just want to increase bill so the owner or as she calls herself the administrator can make the big bucks. Strongly recommend finding another vet with minimum stars of 4.6 or higher. Stay away from this place!!!

We've used GSVP several times as emergencies arise with our pets. They have always been very good and vastly better than the nearby The Red bank Veterinary Hospital. Expensive yes but you do not feel taken advantage of as with other emergency vets. Why I believe so many routine vets recommend them. Unfortunately medical science is not a precise science and adverse things can and do happen with any Vet or healthcare practitioner. I believe that is why there is some negative feedback here. All we can do is hope for the best. I believe that Garden State is very good and consider ourselves lucky to live nearby.

We brought our 5 month old cat there due to a ruptured eye ball and damaged lens that she sustained from what we think was with another cat in a fight when she was outside. Booking the appointment was easy and we were in there the very next day in the morning. The staff was supportive and very professional. We saw Dr. Pierce who is the ophthalmologist there and he was nothing but phenomenal in every aspect. Very intelligent, cooperative, professional, and caring when it came to our cats eye. He broke every down for us when it came to how the surgery would be, the potential outcomes, and so on. She went in to surgery that very same day and we picked her up the following day because the surgery went so well. Dr. Pierce made sure to call us with updates throughout the two days and was very easy to contact throughout her recovery with any questions and concerns we had. We highly recommend this facility and especially Dr. Pierce, if it were not for him our 5 month old cat would have only one eye for the rest of her life. We cannot thank him enough and his staff.

Truly caring doctors and staff.

I would like to take this time to say how happy I am with Garden State Vetinary Hospital.
1. Knowledgeable and hard working and diligent doctor staff
2. Comforting and caring nursing staff
3. Pleasurable and happy front desk staff
All in all they saved my Baby Didi life. They nurtured him back to health diagnosed him perfectly and treated him appropriately. 1 2 3 need to hit on all cylinders for this place to work and it did together this is a great team. I even saw a nurse crying over the death of a dog. What more could anyone say or want. Thank you on behalf of DIDI my wife Lisa Jiang and ma Michael Panzera. God Bless each and everyone of you

I was so surprised by the variety of the reviews that I decided to write one of my own. I had great experiences with Garden State Vets (three, so far) and think that they have a highly skilled staff who care about the best results for the animals in their care. I think the negative reviews stem from the fact that this is a specialty hospital and, as such, they treat the most critical and most severe cases. Patients only come here as referrals through their primary veterinarian because the case requires specialists or on an emergency basis. Sadly, there are bound to be some less than hoped for outcomes. My experiences here, especially with Dr. Hoelzler, have been wonderful and he has done a great job with my dog's joint issues. They have also been very accommodating from a service perspective because i do not live nearby and they make it as easy as possible to bring my dog in and take him home again.

Some people were annoyed by the fact that they ask for partial payment upfront (based on the best estimate they can give). I have been to other similar hospitals on an emergency basis and this is standard practice - perhaps because, with the sickest animals, the outcome isn't always good but that isn't their fault.

If anything, they have always taken better care of my dog than any other specialist facility that I have been to.

I have a yorkie poo Benji and one day i came home from work and he had a limp which is very odd for him. i brought him right to GSVS and they did an ortho exam, he was fine.. dr palmer suggest bloodwork so we went forward with it (and thank god we did!) turns out he has lymes and lymes is in his kidney now he has kidney disease. His blood work was terrible and they told me he would need ICU care right now. the only downfall of this was the price. thousands and thousands of dollars but vet care is expensive everywhere and they were very knowledgeable and very quick with getting what Benji needed done. I am very happy with my experience here and feel good to go back.

So I took my dog here for 5 days while I went away...

So I took my dog here for 5 days while I went away I strictly told them he just had back surgery at their office for ivdd 3 months ago to not pull him or let him jump I picked up my dog Monday night and he was not himself he lost 4lbs is walking worse than when I dropped him off and when I wen I go to pet him he shivers as if I am going to hit him they claim they walk them 3 times a day but his whole behind smells like he was laying is his own urine for hours. Meanwhile they called me everyday stating he ate all his food I believe they are abusive towards the animals they hospitalize and take to their advantage that they can t say anything. On top of everything the girl at the front desk with short hair looks at you like you have 3 heads when you tell her what you need she looks at you like you speak a different language only to ask you your last name and your pets last name clearly my pet has the same last name. She just gives you the total and gets frustrated when you ask for a breakdown of charges I spent 8k on the first visit on the ivdd surgery and $400 on the second visit you d think they d use that money to hire experienced labor to handle customer service. And I do not believe every 25 year old girl there is a licensed vet maybe tech but they all come in saying they are doctors. I never leave reviews but this is just ridiculous!

My dog Flynn had to have surgery on his back leg rather quickly. They made an appointment as soon as they could, I saw them on Thursday and he was in on Monday. They were very thorough and explained all of my options to me and took their time with my questions. My dog had already had surgery at another hospital a few years ago on the other leg. I expected the same awful recovery and pain I saw him go through. Imagine my delight and surprise when my dog comes back to me looking already more like himself. They kept him over night to take care of the pain. They know what they are doing doing and will treat your animal the way you want them to be treated. I can t say enough good things about them. They may be more expensive but they are worth every penny! My 65lb love is up and moving better than ever only 3 weeks out of surgery. They are amazing!

Brought my 6 yr old Shih Tzu there for severe anemia. My pup was in bad shape. She was in ICU for 5 days. I got 3 phone calls a day, two from the doctor, to update me on her condition. They did everything they could but my baby did not make it. Thank you to the doctors and staff for your efforts
