The wife and I stopped by on our way from Yosemite to Santa Cruz. Glad we did. We both like port wine and have a Christmas Day tradition of port wine, fruit, and cheese as an afternoon snack. While the white port was interesting, when we moved to their more traditional ports they were a revelation. The $18 a bottle Tinta port was really good. Had more flavor and less sweetness than the $40+ stuff I've been buying for Christmas Day. We tried the 1996 vintage port and that was even better. Really smooth with just the right amount of sweetness. We tried another of their special ports, loved that one too, and that was it. We signed up for the wine club. If you are in the area and like port wine or are interested in port wine, don't miss this place.

Delicious! !!!!!!! I can't remember how many I tasted five or six but they were 5 out of 5 winners there wasn't one I didn't like highly recommend. Only reason for 4 stars is there a port house only which is not their problem or mine just sayin...... it's my wife's problem. Free tasting for parties of four or less you have got to be kidding me?!?!?! Oh and the prices are not out of this world either very fairly priced especially considering the quality.

New world port is generally overpriced, one dimensional, and cloyingly sweet. Not so for Ficklin ports. Even their younger bottles far outclass most of what is available in the United States from Portugal at a comparable price point. The tasting room is fantastic, with old tractors outside for the kids to play on, and the tasting counter is right in the warehouse, so you can see some of the the casks that contain each years wine. The experience of tasting is educational, but not pretentious, with friendly tasting room staff, and the location is ideal for taking a break on a long drive between northern and southern California.

Their port wines are great. This place went from one of my favorite to scaling things back a little and streamlining their tasting experience. I guess your going to lose a little bit of that old school personal feeling the bigger you get. Still one of the best looking tasting rooms on the trail.

I love visiting this place because where you do the wine tasting is inside of a warehouse where they keep all berrals of wine. Looks vintage and very intriguing. The employee that was distrubiting the wine was very knowledable of the comoany's history. The wine itself here is very good to me be some of them have whiskey in it also which is my favorite and a plus.I would definately recommend this place and its free here no charge for wine tasting. Bring your friends to enjoy.

Walter, David, and now Peter Ficklin have produced one of the finest port houses around. To truly appreciate Ficklin and its ports, you must have multiple visits and get to know the staff and the ports. While their standard pours are great, take the time, and money, to invest in some of their special and older ports -- you will not be disappointed. I have been a customer and member for many years and intend to remain a member for many years to come.

My friends and I were here for a chocolate and port pairing seminar. A lot of care went into this event, which was both fun and informative. If you enjoy chocolate and port, definitely go if they have another!

About Ficklin Vineyards

Ficklin Vineyards is a family-owned and operated winery that has been producing America's most awarded port wines since 1946. Located in the heart of California's San Joaquin Valley, Ficklin Vineyards is renowned for its exceptional quality and taste.

The history of Ficklin Vineyards dates back to the early 1900s when David Ficklin, a young farmer from Nebraska, moved to California in search of new opportunities. He settled in Madera County and began farming grapes on his small plot of land. Over time, he became an expert in grape cultivation and started experimenting with different winemaking techniques.

In 1946, David's son Walter founded Ficklin Vineyards with the goal of producing high-quality port wines that would rival those from Portugal. He planted traditional Portuguese grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao, Tinta Madeira, and Souzao on his estate vineyard.

Today, Ficklin Vineyards is run by Walter's son Peter and grandson Steven. They continue to uphold the family tradition of producing exceptional port wines using traditional methods passed down through generations.

Ficklin Vineyards' commitment to quality begins in the vineyard where only the best grapes are selected for use in their wines. The grapes are handpicked at optimal ripeness to ensure maximum flavor development.

Once harvested, the grapes are crushed by foot-treading or mechanical means before being fermented in open-top tanks using natural yeasts. This process allows for maximum extraction of color and flavor from the skins while preserving delicate aromas.

After fermentation is complete, the wine is fortified with brandy distilled from premium California wine grapes. This stops fermentation and preserves residual sugar levels resulting in a sweet dessert-style wine known as port.

Ficklin Vineyards produces several different styles of port including Vintage Port which is aged for two years before bottling; Tawny Port which is aged for ten years or more; Ruby Port which has a deep red color; White Port which has a golden hue; and Reserve Port which is made only during exceptional vintages.

In addition to its award-winning ports, Ficklin Vineyards also produces other varietals such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot among others that have received critical acclaim over time

Visitors can experience all that this historic winery has to offer by taking part in one of their tasting experiences or tours offered throughout year-round at their tasting room located just off Highway 99 near Madera CA

In conclusion,Fickling Wineries stands out among other wineries due to its rich history dating back over seven decades ago coupled with its commitment towards producing high-quality ports using traditional methods passed down through generations making it America’s Most Awarded Port Winery - Since 1946
