New world port is generally overpriced, one dimensional, and cloyingly sweet. Not so for Ficklin ports. Even their younger bottles far outclass most of what is available in the United States from Portugal at a comparable price point. The tasting room is fantastic, with old tractors outside for the kids to play on, and the tasting counter is right in the warehouse, so you can see some of the the casks that contain each years wine. The experience of tasting is educational, but not pretentious, with friendly tasting room staff, and the location is ideal for taking a break on a long drive between northern and southern California.
