Take my kids every year to the North Pole ride with Santa Claus... The Polar Express is a lot of fun for them and you... What a wonderful excuse to go to Durango in the off-season I would call it... Yes I know people ski but it's still the off-season to me
A relaxing way to spend the day and soak in the beautiful scenery. We were there in late March and it was still wintry - no leaves on the trees and patches of snow. The service only goes up to Cascade Canyon at this time.
If you are willing to come to colorado this is one of the best things to do.
We rode the Polar Express in 1st class train car and had a blast! my 2 year old had a lot of fun and got to meet Santa Clause face to face, and got a gift (bell) directly from Santa him self. We got Hot Chicolate served in Souvenir mugs, our own Golden roudtrip ticket.we sang Carol's and had a great time. At the end we got to see live reindeer and take pics with Santa!! I recommend this to anyone young and old!
We took our granddaughter on the Polar Express. What a wonderful experience. Book early and spend the extra for the 1st class cars.
Great experience. Loved every minute. Great guides, run the show like clockwork. Highly recommended.
Did not get to do the train ride but the station museum is very nice. But then I love everything about trains!
Poor experience, and we were in first class. The service was 5 star, the trip is to long and this was when it was shortened due to track wash out after fire and flood. Amazing views just too long.
Great way to see some wonderful scenery and learn about some early mining history in Colorado. Vic's narrative was excellent
A little expensive, but totally worth the money. Magnificent views all around. Took the train up and the bus down. I'm happy I drove up here for this experience.
A true piece of history on rails. If you are a railway enthusiasts this is a must visit location.
It was pretty awesome. However, I would of been fine doing the one way trip. It makes a long day on a train. I would not recommend doing this if you have a bad back. It jerks alot and I was pretty nauseous.
Such a beautiful train. Amazing scenery on the way up to Silverton.
The museum has some good stuff and is free but their yard policy suck. Basically you can't walk in the yard. I came from Antonito and Chama where I was free to walk the yard as long as I didn't climb anything. Both places I also had a nice chat with the people working there.
Lousiana style atmosphere was awesome. Nice beer choices and the food was tasty. I believe it was a bit slow to get food. Walk-up to order and food is brought to the table.
Other than the ridiculous price, this is a great experience! If you don't have the time to ride the train both ways, take the bus one way. If you take the bus back to Durango, be sure to sit on the left side unless you are extremely scared of heights. Sit on the right side if you take the bus to Silverton.
We went back in years today!! Brought back alot of memories.
Awesome museum! Definitely a place you want to stop if you're in Durango. They have trains and so much more! A lot of military history as well.
Lots of neat stuff concerning the railroad old cars an airplane etc as a movie you can watch
Awesome excursion. Amazing views. Amazing experience.
Love the train ride. Recommend the cars with the premium seating. They cost more but more comfortable.
We booked tickets for The Polar Express for the whole family. What an amazing experience it was for all of us. We started out trying to book online but end up calling in to book our tickets. We found this much more efficient and helpful. When we arrived we were worried about crowds, parking etc. None of it was an issue. There was plenty of parking, crowds were not bad at all. They were efficient at moving people and also at making each individual feel special. Our kids loved it and had interaction with every character. Characters were friendly and played the part amazing. They also had no problem taking pictures with the kids. Lots of fun surprises along the way too! For years we have looked at this and considered it a bit expensive, however now that we have gone I can tell you it is worth every penny and more. You will not be disappointed. We only stood outside for about 15 min durning the show and the were on heated cars enjoying hot cocoa, cookies, entertainment and more. I highly recommend this experience to build memories with your kids!
If you watch carefully, you may get to see the train start a wildfire
One of the most beautiful train tours we have ever made.
It's the most beautiful train ride I've ever taken!!
Take the bus to Silverton and the train back to Durango. Its a great way to spend the day
This ride was incredible! I had no idea it would be so fun. Such great service on the Knight Sky first class car and the views were amazing with the glass on top. Since you hug the mountains most of the time, being able to see up was great. My 4 year old and 8 year old loved the whole trip too. My only complaint would be that we really only got just over an hour in Silverton by the time we got off the train and were supposed to be back in our seats because of a late start and slow speeds for construction near the track. I would have liked to explore Silverton more as it looked like a really neat town.
It's a long train ride to Silverton but totally worth it. The train runs through some amazing back country.
My grandsons loved the polar express! Great every year.
One of those bucket list items for the Durango area. You have to do it. Every year, the price just keeps going up and up. I did it back in the early 90's and the price is almost triple what it was back then. Glad I got it out of the way. Wonderful views.
We had an amazing day the train is very well taken care of , the scenery is to die for and the staff made our trip thank you so much .
Incredible museum, too much to see, my grandson HO enthusiaste was given a personal tour of all train history and trains. Very special for my grandson.
One of the highlights of our 2 weeks Colorado trip, beautiful and very polite staff.
The polar express is always nice for the kids, it has become a yearly tradition for my son.
The Polar Express was awesome!!!!! Worth every penny :) My 3 year old LOVED the whole experience !
Very interesting. A must for anyone even if you're not a rail fan
A lot of interesting stuff packed into this small museum. A great place if you love old cars, trains and history!
We were a group of 3. We all ordered the chicken fried steak dinner. The dinner roll was the best thing on our plates. Would try another restaurant.
I rode this train all the time growing up and it's a great joy to now be able to share the same experience and memories with my boys.
Very fun experience. Don't wear white if riding in the open cars, as you will be covered in soot.
Dropped by for a look. Would ride if we had more time.
They only have 1/4 of the trip but still want a full price on the ticket. What a joke
Museum was nothing. Gift shop was from China. Rode it 25 years ago and it was great then.
A breath taking experience that you will remember for ever.
Grew up in DGO watching the train daily. Still live in DGO and still get excited watching the train with my kids. The Museum is fantastic and allows people to see the real Durango and how from the past to even today the town strive mainly because of the train.
Amazing exhibits and look back into the history of the Durango area.
Amazing experience, the only thing I can say is it's actually better to go up or down in a bus and ride it back or forth. The train ride just too long to warrant basically riding it twice.
So many vintage items in one place! A great place to visit for all ages.
We did the train ride in the middle of winter and the experience and views where breath taking. A must do if your in Durango on vacation.
Beautiful scenery... breathtaking!! I personally wouldn't recommend the round trip on the train, especially if you're traveling with kids. Mine were bored towards then end of the first round (they're 17, 13 & 11). I also thought is was a bit pricey.
Good old West mining town and steam railway good for steam buffs and historians
Fun experience! Beautiful views- I want to go again for one of the "special event" rides. Do wear eye protection as they advise, no reason to ruin a beautiful trip with too much cinder in your eyes!
A must do! Remember to reserve in advance if you can.
Free museum. Jam packed full of history on the railroad. Several antique cars and all other kinds of historical items and collections.
It was a great experience riding on a narrow gauge train, the beauty that you see is awesome
We rode from Durango to Silverton in an open air car. Came back from Silverton to Durango on a bus. That worked very well for us. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous. I highly recommend this excursion if you re anywhere near Durango. We spent a couple hours in the museum. There are a lot of very interesting displays. I could ve spent all day there.
The Durango Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a staple of the Durango community. DSNGR draws in tourists and locals alike giving people a glimpse into the history of this community. Being a local real estate agent, I am really grateful DSNGR as a strong tourism driver for Durango. More than that, DSNGR does a great job sponsoring and supporting various community events. If you haven't done a train ride, it is a great experience and I highly recommend it. My first trip to Durango my Dad and I did a rafting and train ride combo. That is one of my best Durango memories. Here I am 11 years later helping people create those same memories!
