Awesome train ride up into the mountains. We spent a lot of time on the open air car to get the fresh mountain air. The historical narration car was great, we learned a ton and the staff were very knowledgeable!
Rode on the open gondola car. Definitely the way to go! Bring sunglasses, lots of soot! My six year old loved it!
Wonderful day, did narration car both ways with great background stories and legends. Everyone was helpful and accommodating. Saw museum day before trip, well worth the time!
An incredible way to enjoy this beautiful country in a by gone way.
Breath taking views from the steam locomotive train.
Very interesting history in this place. Lots to see and learn about. Great place for the whole family
Enjoyed this train ride with my bestie from San Diego.
Beautiful ride Friendly staff.
Nice day trip. Train is 3 1/2 hours one way. Recommend bus up to Silverton & train ride back to Durango.
These employees truly love their jobs. Every person on this railroad is dedicated to their craft, and has fun while helping people. The train ride is also good, and full of history and some mystery.
Great museum where you can learn the history of the railroad in Colorado. Also offers train rides at a low cost with special holiday events
This was the most scenic train trip my wife and I have ever been on. We did the short 2-3 train ride on the gondola car. Very roomy and lots of space to take pictures or shoot videos of the majestic scenery. After spending the day in this stunningly beautiful western town, to top it off with a train ride through the Canyon gorge, was just perfect!!!!!!
Great trip! I thought my 3 & 6 yr old boys would lose interest, but the narration coach was GREAT! bring along snacks and activity books. So glad we did this train trip!
Had so much fun.... Train ride was interesting and beautiful views of nature...
Huge collection of railroad items. Volunteer working there was so helpful and nice. Amazing that it is free!
Couldn't ride the train due to 416 fire. Great museum.
A must do!.We opted for an enclosed railcar as you never know what the temperature will be once you arrive in Silverton.A very informative guide and a great trip!
The Staff was very friendly. My daughter and I went in to ask for information about The Polar Express
Very cool! The museum is inside of an old roundhouse. Lots of neat stuff to look at. Highly recommended and it is FREE!
We did the halfway excursion to the zip line adventure with my 8yr old - definitely the highlight of our summer vacation
Ellie was very friendly. Pointed out important areas on the way to take pictures of. Offered water & drinks to those who wanted them. Provided directions to places in Silverton.
Takes you back in time. Unsurpassed scenery! Great people who work for this company. Everyone very accommodating, friendly and helpful. Highly recommend it.
Wow. If you are a Colorado native, and you've never been to this.... it's like me growing up in South Florida, and never going to the beach!!!!!
Fun trip up, but recommend taking the bus option down otherwise it can be a little long.
Great ride in vintage train. We took the narrated car and we're so glad because it added so much to the trip. Our narrator want in character, but he was extremely knowledgeable about the history and geology of the area. Worth every penny.
Great train ride & museum. Many different options for riding the steam locomotive's. Check there schedule & make reservations. We took the train to Silverton and the views were absolutely stunning. Departed at 8am and arrived in Silverton at noon. Took the bus back which took 1 1/2 hours. Beautiful views along this route. Tour operator was very friendly and informative. Arriving back in Durango we went to the train museum. A must see, with something to interest everyone. For the two of us, the round trip cost a little less than $250. Not bad for a full day adventure. Highly recommend this to everyone!!! As a side note, the altitude at Silverton is 9318'. Those with breathing issues may have a difficult time wandering around.
A must DO. Great staff very enthusiastic and helpful. Scenery along the route fantastic and varied. Recommend train up Bus back, it gives a different perspective on the area.
Enjoyable, but a little long. Lovely views. Cinders and smoke.
It is really worth it to take a day more and take a train ride. Was one of the greatest experiences we had on our tour.
I love this museum. Everything from modern solar racing cars to mid/late 1800s trains, each which is number 42 :O
Excellent train trip and day out. Wear warm clothes first thing in the morning it can be chilly. Some passengers had blankets
Fantastic steam engine railroad along a river to Silverton
It's an incredible trip...The landscape is so beautiful, you can't imagine....
It is so worth it!
The crew at Christopher Metcalfe Creations love's Durango & Silverton Railroad what a great day.
Loved it! The burgers are excellent and the staff great.
The best scenic ride you could ever take!
At this time of weather I would definitely take the open cart ride. They are doing a very great job at keeping everyone socially distant. Normally they would have the ride full but they have really cut done on the amount of people in cart.
However, our ride was only 2 hours. Silverton was not a stop for us.
Other than that is was an amazing experience.
Fun train ride with absolutely beautiful scenery. If you are in an open car make sure to bring hoodies for higher up in the mountains and maybe a poncho for rain
Boring, over priced and way too long. Save some money and do something else. The staff is nice but the whole experience is a big flop
This trip never disappoints. Beautiful scenes, coal fired steam engine and lots of fun. I will say the totally open air cars were more fun when I was a kid but now in my 70s I prefer the more comfortable inside seats. Be sure to check out the variety of train passenger cars as well as assorted amenities each offers. Have plenty of storage for pictures. And if you didn't care for the scenes on the way up, the train turns around in Silverton so you can watch the other side on the return.
The conductors in charge of the train did not organize to make sure to people's names were Were on the bus
The museum had a lot more things than I had expected to read and learn about.
The most beautiful and breathtaking historical journey you will ever take.
We did the blues train which was amazing! Great music and views! Hard to score tickets but we used the ticket exchange and were able to get tickets for this great experience!!!
Place is amazing. The sheer size of these steam engines is overwhelming.
Awesome trip taking the bus up to Silverton and the train back. Waved at all the people at the end.
The train ride was going to be the high point of the day, a surprise for my boyfriend's birthday. The scheduled train ride was cancelled, mechanical problems with the train. Bigly, disappointed. The day was not a total loss however, we went rafting. No problem with the refund, we could not stay an extra day to reschedule.
Went after a snow, very very beautiful.
Careful if you have morning sickness or are prone to motion sickness, the train does rock from side to side a bit, though not bad.
My sister and I had a good time,we even saw a bear.
The museum if free and a good time killer if you're waiting for the train.
This is a most enjoyable experience that everyone should try at least once. We chose to be in one of the open cars so that we could photograph as the train was movie. You do get soot from the engine but the experience is one most people will never experience.
This is one of my favorite historic railroads. It is a beautiful area to visit and take a ride on a wonderful train. The people who work there are really helpful and friendly.
My kid is a train fanatic. This was a dream come true for him. The entire family had a wonderful time. We did general seating up and back, and spent a lot of time in the open air car for taking pictures. Really smooth ride, the snack car was great (get a souvenir cup! Well worth it!), plenty of bathrooms. We went in early May and it wasn't overcrowded and we got snow! Truly beautiful and amazing!
Went on the Polar Express train and it was really cute! I suggest it more for kids however, my partner and I enjoyed the hot chocolate, cookies and music
The trip to Silverton on the train is an unforgettable experience. We hardly sat down on the train! The museum is so much more than trains.
They have a free museum here with lots of great railroad equipment on display including two steam engines and a caboose. You can climb inside the caboose. They also have an amazing model railroad. Kids loved it and even the teenagers got into it.
Wonderful train adventure.
Recommend for families
Probably the best narrow guage railroad ride I been on.
One of the most breathtaking trips I've ever taken!
It's a great one time experience. We had a closed coach and it was a little warm but not like anyone could help that.
So much more than trains. Really enjoyed the diversity. Staff was very friendly. Worth a visit if you are in Durango
