Must do this once in your life. A little dirty and raw, but take the open air car to maximize the experience. Don t take a sealed car, your neck will be sore after looking out the window all day. Sights were magnificent!!

Aimed at tourists, but really is a great ride, with beautiful vistas. Extremely efficient operation and well worth the price. Washed out track kept it to a 2-hour ride for us, but honestly, that is just about right. Really enjoyed it.

Such a fun and beautiful ride from Durango to Silverton. I would highly recommend doing the gondola cars, if you are going in the winter then bundle up because it is cold!!! But so worth it, they have a drink/food cart that has a variety of things and do free refills if you do a souvenir cup, which I would highly recommend if you plan on drinking alot.

The kids loved the Polar Express! They loved going to the North Pole. I'm not sure what paying more gets you, but if you buy the least expensive ticket, it's still a magical experience! We got a dance show by our server just like on the movie. She was very animated, happy, and interactive with the kids. We got a golden ticket upon entry, hot chocolate, a cookie, a song book which everyone sings along on our way back, and a bell from Santa's sleigh. We were impressed with the quality of the bell. It has the polar Express etched on it. A fun and magical experience!

This train ride is absolutely amazing. We took it in May when the track was fully open, the weather was gorgeous and the views were incredible. We settled on the open air gondola after debating between it and the fancy caboose cart. We were not disappointed! In fact, during some of the more 'wow!' moments on our trip up, people flooded our cart because we had the best views. Our gondola was also right next to the snack cart which was an added bonus. Do not miss out on this if you are in Durango!

We paid the reservation fee for the historic narration coach on the way back to Durango and took a bus up. This was not a good use of the extra money-- apparently the narration was really only for the ride up and the trip back to Durango was a sporadic conversation with a staff member in the coach. It was really frustrating when we asked questions and to be told that they already covered that information (apparently on the way up). If you are going for the narration coach be sure to either do it round trip or just on the way up to Silverton.

Nice train ride, but a long one going both ways... I'd do the train up and bus back... Plenty of parking right next to the McDonalds and a short walk to the train station. Nice train ride, but once would be enough... you are assigned seats, and the train does turn around, so you will see both sides. Suggest going up on right side, facing forward, for the river views.

We got tickets for the narrated coach since we like to know the history of the area and what we are looking at. It's a four hour ride to Silverton and three and a half hours back. The narrator talked the entire time, it was informative. We had two hours to get lunch in Silverton and walk around.

We were allowed to open the windows and that allows you to get some cool air. Not clean because it is a steam locomotive and there is smoke and soot blowing in. Enjoyed the day but I don't need to do it again.

Best money spent! My family rode the train about a month ago and we talk about it on the daily. Very beautiful scenic ride! Staff is helpful and very friendly, they make the experience very pleasant. Only thing I was disappointed with was there was not enough time spent at Cascade Canyon. If riding up there eat your lunch on the train and then spend the 45 minutes enjoying Cascade Canyon.

What a fun, fun trip on the train! We are locals, yet had never taken the train trip to Silverton...we were missing out! It was a fabulous time, the kids loved it (even the little guys). We did get picked up in Silverton, which made for the perfect length of trip for the kids. Great, great fun!

We experienced the Polar Express. It was great for the kids. They loved it. Followed the story closely, very interactive. Only down fall was you had to be on the correct side of the train to see most if it.

We loved the train museum. There was a lot to see and we spent about an hour and half here with our 5 year old and our 7 year old. I wish we would have had time to ride the train to Silverton they said that takes most the day to get there and back with the stops that you take. We plan on trying that next time.

One of, if not the best train rides in the entire country. Riding this railroad is like truly taking a step back in time. Not only do you get to experience a historic train ride up to Silverton just like folks would have done starting in 1882, but the scenery of the Animas River, the mountains, and the canyon you travel up is breathtaking. A very fun adventure for folks from all walks of life! And a bucket list caliber experience for those who love trains and railroading!

Its funny how a lot of you call Silverton a tourist trap.....How do you think small towns like Silverton remain and prosper. Lord knows your not a "Tourist" sitting on a three hour train ride that left a bigger tourist trap (Durango). If you don't like paying higher prices for your entertainment, Then DON"T GO!!!

Me and my wife with her family took this trip on the train and absolutely loved it. What a throw back in time experience it was for us. Leaving a high priced tourist trap to go to another smaller tourist trap in the mountains on an authentic mode of transportation from the late 1800's....What an experience that was. This train system is privately owned and I can only imagine what his insurance rates and the upkeep on this trains and tracks are to keep your butts safe and unharmed. Lord forbid if you look behind the scenes.

Then museum is free, Not much of a trap there. Has some really wonderful exhibits inside. Actual steam engines inside. Beautiful mountain / train display inside.

We took the bus up to Silverton and the train down, in a narrated car. The history from both tour guides was excellent. We liked seeing slightly different views each way. Very kid friendly, though more independent kids might have more fun than our toddlers in some ways. Our train the year old still talks about the Silverton train six months later. Bring a jacket for Silverton, even in summer. The walk from the parking lot to the station was awkward, and we forgot the directions halfway there. It's not hard to find if you pay better attention than we did, and I wished I took notes of what the parking attendant said.

It was such a wonderful experience- we rode the silver vista and our attendant was Ellie and she was wonderful, attentive and sooooo funny. Some of the best scenery riding into Silverton. What a lovely way to end our Colorado vacation. Highly recommend it!!

BUYERS BEWARE=We had a death in our family and could not go, even with a death in the family, even with Travel Guard, even giving them 6 days notice we did not get a full refund for our tickets. I think this is very poor customer service we will not return there, very sad they are too corporate and money driven to not give all our mone
y back, this was spring break so I know they will be able to sell our seats to some one else. Not happy about this.
