I image this is a wonderful activity do, except for people around the Denver area.....because for some ignorant reason, they don't offer the option of catching the train or bus from Silverton to Durango, and then the train or bus from Durango back to Silverton! Everything has to begin and end in Durango!
So if you live in the Denver area or anywhere North, you have to drive 6 1/2 hours to Durango in order to do this, which then involves expensive overnight stays, instead of just driving an hour and a half up the mountain to Silverton, and being able to fit this into a single day activity.

I enjoy working on the train. Meeting people from all over the world and sharing the beautiful San Juan Rocky Mountains with them . Going deep into the mountains where you can't reach any other way but by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. It is astoundingly beautiful and amazingly transforming exploring the mind blowing past and present of the wild wild west. Come join me and see for youself!

Fun outing with my honey. Amazing staff, and beautiful scenery. Travel along the Animas River through some of the country's most incredible views. Soaring Rocky mountain vistas along the blue green waters and rusty boulders of the river. Arrive in Silverton and take the two hour layover to shop and get some lunch before reboarding the train for the return trip. As an added bonus on the return trip you will be in the same seats as the trip there but because the train has been turned around to make the gourney back you get a whole different view.

What a fun experience. Everyone should take this train ride. Guides & brakemen...woman were great. Scenes out the window surpassed anything I had seen. The fall colores were superb. Silverton was fun but snowy & wet day we were there. Loved all our events in Durango.

Lovely journey into the San Juan mountains via an 1890s steam engine. The views are breathtaking and the vibe is nostalgic. The upgrade to private car is well worth it for the narration, extra space, snacks, and service.

This is a must-do if you are visiting the Durango area. It is expensive but there are different seating options available to help keep costs reasonable. Also consider this an all-day event as the train ride up and back will take around 6 hours. It really is like stepping back in time 100 years. The train staff are very knowledgeable about the history of the train and the Durango/Silverton area. Water/Coffee/soft drinks and snacks are offered as part of your ticket depending on what type of seat you purchase, but other items can be purchased on board. You'll have around 2 hours in Silverton to eat and shop before heading back to Durango. Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly as the temperature drops quite a bit on the way up to Silverton. Don't forget your camera.

Very cool experience, had mishap with equipment but they made it up to us. They got my father & I a seat on there . Thuroughly enjoyed yesterday's trip and yard tour today. The tour guide was very knowledgeable even with the technical questions. Office staff was very easy to communicate back and forth with via email over time.

We walked through the Durango Silverton Train Museum after taking the Polar Express with our daughters. It was late so we didn t have a chance to go through the whole place but there was a lot of very interesting things to look at including several old trains and cars that they have inside the building. We will definitely go back when we have more time and look around more! A must place to visit if you love trains or are in the area and looking for something interesting and informative!

We have rode this train multiple times. A great step back in time. The Christmas (Polar Express) is lots of fun. Take a ride here and follow up with a mountain trail tour from San Juan Backcountry. The most fun you could have. Kids love the train. It pulls right into town.

Riding on a train powered by steam...awesome! Staff were great! Ride is very, very long...5 hours one way to Silverton. DON'T ride in the standard (cheap) seats... you'll get cinders all over if you open a window, and there's very limited view. Take the bus back.. the views are epic! Only 1 hour ride back to Durango!

Horrible customer service - you pay $200 per person for this experience and when we arrived to pick up our boarding passes for something I booked months in advance we found out we were on a different train, different car and now our group was separated in seats. No advance notice about this and now we had to kill almost another hour in Silverton with 4 small kids. We planned this trip in advance to make it a smooth and memorable experience and this is a really poor way to treat customers.

Extremely awesome!!!! We rode the bus up and took the train down and rode in the narrator car which was just what I wanted. You could hear stories about gangs Ike and Porter and learn about history of the two towns. If you want to take this train and bring your kids though please don t let them babble. It was very distracting when there were families just chatting away when the car was supposed to be quiet so you could hear the cool stories.

The views of nature can't be beat. This was totally remarkable in every way. It was very fun. The only reason I took off 1 star is because it was just a bit too expensive for what it was. You should go, but look very hard for a deal or sale.
