Perfect authentic stream engine railroad experience. Rode in Gondola and got dirty with soot! Saw views so breathtaking I thought it must be a movie. Staff top notch! Perfect!!!
What a great place to bring the family! We rode the Polar Express, and the staff during the ride up and back were excellent. The show they put on was a lot of fun, and all the kids eyes lit up with excitement. Lots of soveniers to bring home! If you have enjoyed this book as a child, or have children of your own, it's a fun time. Might not be very appealing to older kids or teenagers, as it is tailored to a younger crowd.
Between the museum and the train this is the prime place to visit in Durango!!
Great views, friendly staff. Extremely tiring id going back on train. Recommended to take train back.
Great museum! Only a donation is required. Nice gift shop as well.
I can only say when they pulled that steam locomotive out and blew that whistle I felt like a kid again
Amazing ride! Discovered our beautiful Colorado. Steamy reminded me of childhood train rides. Staff is great: knowledgeable and helpful. Coach was better for us, warmer in May than the open carriage. Want to come back in fall for colors.
Wonderful experience and amazing staff and trip. Kids loved it and were in awe the entire time. Well worth the time and trip.
Very beautiful but as a young active person it was a little slow for me. Would rather have been hiking or doing something active.
I ride the train every chance i get...it only gets better every year. I first rode the train in 1966 and I'm so glad that the train has been cared for and improved over the years. It truly is a treasure for The Four Corners. This is a lot of bang for your buck so I say go for it! Silverton is a wonderful destination on the other end...love The Brown Bear Cafe for lunch when you get to town for your 90 min of eating and shopping. You will see scenery that cannot be seen from any highway because there are no roads into this area. The gorgeous Animas River is with you all they way ...canyon views unmatched on any other trains I have ridden and fantastic rock formations and forests for great photo ops.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I brought my niece here & we had a blast! Even my 18 year old daughter had a great time!
Turn back your clocks over 100 years and experience the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage Railroad! This the trip you won't forget, you'll talk about it's spectacular beauty and stunning scenery for years! Any experience you decide on will be well worth while,, but bring a camera and a full battery for you're going to wear it on this trip!
So worth the time and money! The scenery is spectacular! We road in The San Juan covered car as we went in October.
The river and mountain are so stress free. Is a very good ride
Everyone should experience this ride and don't miss the museum if you like trains.
When you walk into the museum your eyes pop wide open and your jaw just drops in ah, wow unbelievable. You want to be a kid all over again. Was very impressed. Thank you
I nice place to take your kid. We saw there interesting things and enjoined this museum!
We made it a bucket list trip for a special weekend. Couldn't find better views anywhere
Beautiful scenic ride. Our train host was pleasant, helpful, and informative. Our train likely started a wildfire which, now, 10 days hence, is still burning, destroying thousands of acres. Trains are no longer operating.
Good thing: scenery is very good. On the edge of the cliff. Worth the trip. Staffs are friendly.
But one bad thing: the coal burning in the air during the train ride. Very bad for health. My nose and eyes and ears are full of coal particle. This will be worth if you have health issue. Seriously need to wear mask during this trip.
A trip thru nature at its finest! Also the history of this place is so awesome! Great trip for families!!!
It's a magical experience. Bring the kids on the polar express. I suggest that you have them sit down and watch the movie before going.
Fantastic experience dress warm and expect to get a little dusty with coal if you sit in an open air car.
Excellent place, good and several places to eat and drink.
An amazing unforgettable experience! It should be on everyone's bucket list!
A very nice piece of history , thru beautiful country .
A magical experience. The Polar Express is well orchestrated and a delight for our family every year. There's nothing to compare to riding a real stream locomotive.
Did the round-trip. Great views. If I did it again, would take bus trip back from Silverton.
Very nice experience, we enjoyed the ride and the scenery.
Well worth the experience. You won't be disappointed.
VERY COOL! We did the Polar Express Ride. KIDS LOVED IT!
Interesting models, cars, train cars, and random other things. The kids LOVED the restored caboose that they could climb around in.
Absolutely loved the train ride. Beautiful scenery, everywhere you look. Would love to go again.
Absolutely loved the train trip great fun a must do if in area.
What an awesome piece of history you actually get to ride on and experience. Would love to bring my adult children and grandchildren up for a ride.
Awesome people that work there and enjoyed our stay.
Our family comes to celebrate Christmas together and ride the Polar Express every year. There are now 17 of us. Mom and Dad make the family matching pajamas. You get slippers and pajamas in your Xmas sack along with a train ticket. It is awesome!!!!
I waited 36years for this trip, a bit disapointed would have been much better if there was snow plus staying a night in Silverton.
Really enjoyed the ride and scenery. I think the stop in Silverton could have been longer though. If I were to do it again, I'd take the bus back down to Durango.
Amazing experience, wonderful staff. I highly recommend it.
Absolutely awesome!! Make sure you book the narrated trip/car yes it s more but more than worth the extra cost! Ed our narrator/character was fantastic!! Besides his character Otto Mears he told of history of the area RR mining and more!!! This is what made the trip besides the beautiful scenery. Thanks Ed for a fantastic trip!!!!!!
Too touristy. Not really the old western town feel when you have Starbucks and Ashley's furniture on main street.
For a vintage train experience it is great. You will see some of the most beautiful scenery ever.
Beautiful views and relaxing ride. Worth taking the trip!
This is a must! Unbelievable views from the train. I highly recommend you take the the shuttle to Silverton and then train ride back to Durango. Gives you three and a half hours of riding train which is plenty. Several people told me the round trip train ride was a little too much. We rode in the outside car and it was awesome. Our eyes were a little red for days from the soot from the train but it was worth it.
A fun excursion on a historic steam train ride along the Animas river... great views and ambiance. Want a real hoot, ride the Blues Train special event...
Try to get on the last car, that gives you a panoramic view out the back. I suggest you ride the train one way and then take the shuttle back. Otherwise it's a long, long day.
What a wonderful and beautiful experience! The mountain vistas along the Animas river are phenomenal! Hubs and I each took about 100 photos. We made our reservation at the train station 2 days in advance (during July) and the office staff were very friendly and helpful. We chose a car with a glass some ceiling and open sides -- it was spectacular for viewing. Be advised that the trip is about 3.5 hours one-way, so that can make for a very long day. We saw a number of people who rode the train to Silverton and returned on the bus (good for families with kids).
Great place to visit, lots to do. Very good train ride.
Pattii and I rode in the Silver Vista car and Elle was our guide and attendant. The train ride was impressive and constant beauty. Elle made it all the more fabulous with her quick wit, geological knowledge and great attitude. We will remember it always and hope to bring grandkids in the future. The Silver Vista offered full views of the magnificent mountains and we loved this car. We decided to ride it round trip and are so glad we did. Don t miss out on this experience.
Loved it. I've been waiting to see this since I was a kid. I'm so glad I finally made it. I even know the song by heart.
It was even better than I could have expected. Don't deprive yourself if a wonderful experience, come see "the beautiful daughter of the D&RG".
See the smoke and hear the whistle blow.
The young lady that plays Cora was very knowledgeable about the persons during that era of time in the 1800's. She was able to answer questions that the persons riding the train asked and even off the Record there was things as far as on the Rocks why they were Orange in circles and she explained all of that. She had a good personality and made everyone feel at home and several times she would walk up and down the aisle and make sure everyone was okay and was enjoying themselves. Young and old seem to really like listening to her and get all the information that was given to us. The trip was amazing and love frank the conductor. The town of Silverton was amazing and beautiful. Such colorful areas of beauty pointed out so many times
This was a great little stop on our southbound journey through CO. My 4 year old loved it. Quick, easy & cheap.
There's been some damage to the railroad lines so you cannot order tickets online but if you go to the station you can get them they're currently bussing you past the damage which takes about 20 minutes and then you get on the train so I'm glad we were still able to do it.
Also there's a cute little Bakery call Durango Bagel right near the train station that's open at 6:30 so you can actually come down Park and eat while you're waiting to get on the train.
Neat little museum in downtown Durango. Must see if visiting the area!
Nice museum and the rail yards are very nice to walk around.
It was a great experience. We went while it was snowing and it was beautiful!!
This train museum was so interesting. Many of the exhibits are from long time enthusiasts and residents of Durango. It needs more support financially from visitors to maybe get air conditioning, and room for growth. I don't usually donate much, but this free museum really entertained me more than most "paid admission" museums. Thanks, Durango for your hospitality, and kudos to your firefighters on their hard work fighting the wildfires this season!
If you have not done this it is worth it. I would recommend taking the bus option back to town.
Beautiful train ride. Loved seeing the views from the open air gondola. The museum at the depot was also really nice. If you do opt for the open air car you will get soot on you, so bring sunglasses.
The gondola car is covered. Sever sunburn on the Chama ride with no roof.
The historic train is amazing and the views are beautiful. I love seeing waterfalls on the rocky mountainside and the churning waters of the river. The museum is nice too!
