I had the pleasure of having my membership sponsored at TMPL Gym because of my Oprah magazine cover. The goal was to get to my ideal weight. They had the InBody program and I met with the owners. They had a nutritionist Danielle, excellent trainers Rob Hrapchak, Marcella Mello and many wonderful staff members. One of my favorites was the pool classes. I took one fitness class that was great too. The equipment was top notch. Since I went during working hours I didn t have issues with over crowding but I had seen how busy it could get on a visit later in the day. I would always get protein chocolate vegan smoothies from the cafe which were tasty.

The members reflected the area, so it was a lot of men weight lifting. When I saw a woman it was like HEEYY. I would go back to TMPL if I could simply because of the relationship I built, not because I felt like I found a community. Keep in mind this view reflects my experience from 2016 so I don t know what changes have been made since.

I wanted to go to this gym but $160 price tag and the snobby attitude of the sales rep turned me off. The gym is decent but if you are looking for weights, it is average to small in size. The swimming pool is nice and so is the music but for me, it's about having a wide selection and modern weight lifting equipment. At $160 and a zero negotiation technique, they will not be awarded my money. Go with Crunch--you're better off.

The gym used to be really good but unfortunately they handled pandemic really bad. I got additional charges. They closed way too late when all the gyms were closed already. I paid to froze my membership although it was frozen because of pandemic anyway and they kept charging me almost the same amount of money for my membership although I didn't have flywheel classes, gym classes, internal services were minimized, gym capacity changed and gym lost 70% of the services I used. The gym handled pandemic horribly and is not worth it.

It is an excellent gym.

It is an excellent gym.
I have been a member for years.
Like many previous reviewers have mentioned, it got a bit busier after NYSC took over the place and thus the quality got deteriorated a bit.
But I still like the place. It has a full size pool and it's better than most Equinox locations and the rate is far lower. The class instructors are pretty good too (some have left but it's NYC and people move in and move out).

I ve been a TMPL member for several years. However recently things have gone downhill. I adore the concept of tmpl but I can t rave about it the way I used to. There are water leaks everywhere, mold in the pool stairwell and the staff are not as friendly as the guys who used to be at the front desk. Ever since the new holding company came in it sadly just doesn t feel the same. Strong possibility I may join a better gym this summer.

I worked out here for the first time today and it was great. The front desk was very welcoming and made sure to call me by my name. The facility is huge, which is definitely a big deal to me now, considering. Everything was clean and the staff frequently wiped down the machines. The locker room was also spacious, modern, and clean. I highly recommend this location. :-)

Apologies can only go so far. They really need to hire reliable lifeguards who are going to show up for work. Time and time again, I show up for an early swim only to find lifeguard called out and the pool is not open. Totally unacceptable. Management needs a "plan B" that doesn't involve turning swimmers away.

The only gym in Manhattan that I've found worthwhile for people that are serious about fitness.

I did have trouble with the music volume one night but it was beyond satisfactorily resolved.

I joined TMPL in December and all winter there were issues with their hot water whoch never got fixed. Now that summer has come around, the air conditioning in the locker room has issues. It has not been working for more than a month now and every time I check when it would be resolved no one has any answers. Seems like there is always one issue or the other with this place.

Do not sign up or work for this gym. I was en employee here and they will do anything to keep a buck. They never paid me for hours that I work nor was I reached out by NONE of the managers to address or try to fix the issue. After waiting months for a paycheck... MONTHS! that was never received I had to take matters into a different hand. These people are for themselves. Don't care for employees let alone members. The disrespect and selfishness of this place should not go unnoticed or unaddressed.

All gyms have cancellation policies. You give notice and either you give 30/45/60 days notice. These facilities cost a lot of money to open, maintain, staff, etc. if you are committed to your fitness journey, the money is simply an incentive to go more often. The contract you sign with renting an apt.... break that and see if your deposit and two months rent AT LEAST is forfeited, more than likely you re on the hook for the entire lease you agreed to. Join the $10 gym with pizza parties if you want. The money you pay for fitness is money not going to medical bills later- preventative healthcare! Btw get records of twice a week visits to your gym, your insurance (most) pay you back for a lot of it!!

As most of the other reviewers have noted, things started going downhill after it got acquired. I have worked out in NYSC before and I could appreciate the references that some of the members have noted. The facilities are ill-maintained and we get regular email updates that certain areas (i.e. Pool, hot water) are "under maintenance". That is not how a gym should be run. David should know better.

Also, the management is terrible. After cancelling my membership and attempting to get a refund (I did the prepayment plan), the accounting team/management is giving me the go-around move and pushing the blame onto the "new system". It has been a month plus. That is no way to treat anyone let alone an ex-customer.

Tmpl has gone downhill since the acquisition by To...

Tmpl has gone downhill since the acquisition by Town Sports International Holdings aka the operator of New York Sports Club. I've been a member since they first opened. This is not what others and I signed up for.

1. They are cutting corners with maintenance work. Fewer large towels and sometimes the wrong NYSC-style small thin towels are provided. The locker room reeks of musk and mold especially in the staircase from the men's shower stalls to the swimming pool area. Water dripping down the ceiling and nasty musty malodorous stank plus bleach (NASTY!). One of the shower stalls has been broken for weeks. The shower amenities have changed to some generic BS. There hasn't been any shampoo for almost a week now. Hand soap is now a rarity as they limited to 2 bottles of hand soap for 4 faucets! Only 1 of the 2 restrooms near the swimming pool has hand soap. They don't mop the locker room floors and workout area as before. The glass mirrors are not wiped down on a regular basis as before. There's dust on equipment and stretching area. The stretching mats are not wiped down on a daily basis as before. It reeks of armpit musk.
2. Lobby furniture is nasty! Ripped. Torn. Reeks of something odd. Just nasty!
3. Weights and equipment are not placed back in the racks.
4. Rude private trainers and their clients. How does a luxury gym stay financially viable if members are bringing in their own personal trainers? A few stash clamps, clips, and other small items in their gym bag. Are those theirs to take or does it belong to the gym?
5. New and rude members seeking bedtime clients. I know that's how they pay their bills. But the gym is not the right place to seek out clients.
6. Sticky fingers. LEAVE PEOPLE'S STUFF ALONE! IF IT'S NOT YOURS, IT'S NOT YOURS!
7. Rude members who will stay put and hogging one or several equipment for the entire time they are at the gym. No sharing with any other members. They balk and throw a crybaby misfit if you ask them kindly to share. They text. They talk and play on their phone. They chit-chat with their friends.
8. Shampoo, conditioners, mouth wash, lotion and Kleenex are for everyone. Is it really necessary for 2 guys who regularly fill up their own large plastic bottles to take home? LMAO! Seriously!!! These items are cheap stuff! Do you really need that much lotion? I'm there 3x a week at night. And there you are filling it up 3x a week! Just pumping and pumping the entire bottle of lotion. You have other bottles filled with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and mouth wash. like Are you showering 100x/day?
9. Razors. Ok. Now this is gross! I refuse to shave at the gym ever again. One guy takes and uses several razors at a time. He then recaps and places the razors back in the razor container. Other members leave their razors on the shower stall floor. Umm SERIOUSLY??! Have you not heard of infections like HIV and Hepatitis C? If you uncap the razor, throw it in the trash! I don't care if you used it to shave or not. Just THROW IT IN THE TRASH!
10. It is very inconsiderate to lock several empty lockers next to you so you have more "space" to change. Those empty lockers can be utilized by other members.

There's a reason the gym is dark and creepy. It attracts a lot of creepy, mentally unstable people. Watch out for meth heads, stalkers, crackheads, and thieves! The gym has lots of maintenance issues from broken equipment to massive floods. They also have a member that recently stabbed his roommate 16x across the street from the gym. Several members served time for theft. A few staffs are also an ex-con. You also have lots of sketchy escorts, pimps, and dealers there. Your dealers might be your teachers, healthcare workers, bartenders, struggling actors and singers, personal trainers etc. That's why we know which members are "functional" addicts like hackers, architects, bankers, lawyers, etc. There's also dysfunctional addicts roaming around the gym. I can't wait until my contract ends. Not luxury gym whatsoever. Join at your own risk! PS don't trust the 5-star reviews with fake names. David Barton is known to PAY a web company to promote the gym and write fake reviews. That's right! FAKE REVIEWS! Babu Dinesababu lmao! Fake name and fake review

The cost of the membership versus the reliability of this gym are not equal. For a dozen different reasons, they re frequently without hot (and sometimes cold) water and the accessibility of the pool is pretty hit or miss: today is the twentieth time I ve had to miss a workout because the pool is closed (without prior notice) or because mid-swim they ve kicked everyone out due to lack of staff. It s not conducive to a consistent training schedule. My emails to management have consistently gone unanswered. Go join Equinox instead.

I upgraded my membership to Elite to get into this location a couple of months ago after NYSC acquired it. I was excited it was nice back then but I saw it exponentially go down south as expected. I believe they started to open the gym to regular members, you don t need to be an Elite to get in anymore. The lighting is sexy AF but it makes it too difficult to see the dirt and grimes around the locker room/bathrooms. The hair balls in the showers are big enough to mistake them for a mouse.

I signed up for a trial with this gym almost a YEAR ago. Notified the manager Jane that I won t be continuing days before the trial ended. She contacted me back and told me she d take care of it. Almost a year later I still keep getting charged $69.00 and $169.99 every few months around the same time. I have been back and forth with the managers here through email trying to get this resolved. It took months for them to refund my money from last year. They are unresponsive and a scam of a business. I have never experienced such unprofessional nonsense ever. I have been very patient with them and they still feel the need to have my credit card on file. They are shady and a major scam. Save the headache from dealing with them.

I signed up for the 10 day free trial and was told by Jane that I "could call or email anytime" which turned out not to be true. When I called to cancel my free trial I was told I could NOT do it over the phone. Then they charged me $159 for the entire month on top of a $10 cancelation fee anyway. Definitely not worth the annual fee of $69 plus $159/month for a place w falling apart equipment and lockers, dirty showers and steam room, class instructors that don't show up, and cheap shampoo refills put into fancy name brand bottles. It's obvious the new management doesn't care for their members.

My membership was frozen, but an employee unfroze it without my request or consent. I was wrongly charged on September 2nd. I went to TMPL on Sept 4th, and asked for a refund. Since then, I have been sending emails to two employees at TMPL asking for my refund. It is now Sept 20th, and no sign of my money. It has been nearly 20 days, three weeks, after the day I was charged, and all I got is "he's inundated with others having the same issue" and "just bear with him". I do NOT recommend this gym because of its customer service.

Great gym and the location is ideal for me. Friendly staff and beautiful pool.
After a few months, they need to do a better job with cleaning the shower area. And hangers in the lockers are missing. They no longer provide hair products. Then, an area that was supposed to be for stretching and abs turned into an office.
I find that, for a professional gym, being without a decline bench press is utterly unacceptable. Allegedly, they ordered that equipment but that was weeks ago.

This is a gym center that is charging premium rates, without premium pleasantries and administrations. For a considerable length of time, the rec center has had heated water issues. Ordinarily, it doesn't work by any stretch of the imagination. Be that as it may, when it does, it can get reproving. Of course, I comprehend structures are old, boilers break, and support can be troublesome. So, it's been a long time since the exercise center has given sufficient boiling water. As opposed to reacting quickly by fixing the issue, the executives and initiative accept that putting a sign, and sending messages to its individuals requesting understanding will take care of the issue.

I m surprised to see the overwhelming 5 star reviews here. Have you guys been to Equinox??

Customer service can be better. I called three times to the scheduling desk and no one picked up. Front desk staff frequently can t answer my questions because they claim they are new. It seems like a pay check is the only reason they show up...

I understand gym like this wish to create an upscale setting, but the space is under-utilized in my opinion. If I were the designer or manager, I would relocate the juice bar and the office next to men's room to ground floor, and fill the vacated space and other aisles with more equipments.

At first sight the gym looks great. After a few days you notice that someone hasn't properly cleaned the showers for weeks as slime is starting to accumulate under your feet. The showers and the entire mens locker room smells like mold.

The employees and daytime front desk associate is rude and unempathetic to the fact that they are dealing with another human and are more focused on the persona they want to project in line with TMPL gym's pretentious image with no substance to back it up. The shampoo and body products are not the brand that is labeled on the dispensers.

Coming in at merely the same price (actually more) than one Equinox location I would highly reccomend going there. I signed up and was offered a promotion that was not honored. I attempted to call the front desk and emailed the manager who managed to answer me after 6 days and then no reply after two weeks of attempting to get in contact for being wrongfully charged. I was signed up over the phone and no one made me aware of the cancellation policy. Town Sports International is no competition and there is NO CUSTOMER service in this place. Not to mention the 98% gay population that judge others and don't even know how to be loving kind human beings. That is what they call their "vibes" that they charge 170 a month for.

DO NOT SIGN UP! THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!

DO NOT SIGN UP! THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!

I signed up at TMPL shortly after coming to NYC at the end of February. They had a good deal at that time so I rushed into signing up, but after actually working out there I realized that I didn t really feel comfortable. So 1 week later I called up Jane to cancel my membership (I was given a 10 day trial period during which I could cancel at no cost) and she confirmed the cancellation over the phone (it took me a couple of calls to finally get Jane on the phone, emails were left unanswered).
The issue is that they ve been charging my account with the monthly membership fee ever since. Jane never or rarely replies to emails and when I try to call (from overseas), front desk tells me Jane is with a customer. I was also told that manager Patti would get in touch with me, but I ve never heard from her. My bank is now trying to get the money back, if unsuccessful they will bring a lawyer in.

I m usually not a person to post an opinion online, but I ve never had to deal with a company that showed such a lack of cooperation and honesty. Customer service is definitely on the bottom end of their list of priorities. Mistakes happen, but this is far from being one and I wouldn t want this to happen to anyone else.

So for anyone looking for a great gym, I highly recommend Chelsea Piers Fitness! It is slightly more expensive but I ve never been to a gym with such a variety of equipment and the atmosphere is always great.

The Gym center included a decent TRX and boxing zone. I truly appreciate utilizing the zone. Be that as it may, educators likewise show classes here, 2hich is available to the remainder of the rec center with no solid protection. This mean you will probably be doing cardio as teachers are yapping directions and music is impacting. I wouldn't suggest doing cardio while these classes are in session, except if you have excellent clamor dropping earphones.

I've been a member of a lot of gyms in the city such as Equinox and NYSC which have all been great experiences but Tmpl is by far the worst! I got a call as I signed up for one of their newsletters asking if I wanted to pay a small refundable fee to lock in a membership rate when their new West Village location opened. I was told that I could cancel before the start date and no fee would be charged. I sent an email and called before the membership started and was told by a membership advisor Jane Nielsen in November of 2018 that the $75 fee would refunded asap. The fee was never refunded and they continued to debit me $150 for two months following. I've sent multiple follow up emails since then and keep getting told that the fee will be refunded in a few days and was recently added into an email with a manager Kevin Kavanaugh who just never responded. It's been over 7 months and they owe me almost $400 and just keep stringing me along as soon as I send an email saying the full amount will be refunded. Their customer service is terrible and I fell like they are just stealing from me at this point. Do not join this gym!

I wouldn t really recommend this place. I signed up for the membership and registered for 10 training session for around 1*** dollars. Then their machine was broken for two weeks. And no one cared to go through the most important policy such as cancellations policy with me. They took a long time to respond to emails. Also I wasn t given the chance to look at the contact when I signed and they didn t send me the contract until 4 days later, and at that time no changes could be made. I would highly recommend anyone to ask for and carefully go through the contract. And be really careful about signing up for anything.

I wish I didn t have to even give one star. The place is filthy... bandaids on the locker room floors, water fountains backed up for days... the list goes on. The most appalling situation is their lack of respect for their customers. This is vividly displayed through their member dues. I have been paying twice, TWICE the amount as other members I know (I saw the receipts), for the same exact services and membership enrollment, which was started at the same time. This isn t a business... at least not a legit one.

My friend and I were curious. We toured the gym. It's underground, no windows, very dark, and not worth joining. We got a very awkward weird vibe from the members and staff. It was like "Let's hurry up and get the hell out asap". The women's locker room was nasty. The gym floors smelled like mold. Their membership advisor said they experienced multiple massive floodings throughout the entire gym. Umm isn't that why it stinks and a health risk?? Overall it's one step up from NYSC. If you're cheap, join Blink Fitness or Planet Fitness. If you can afford it, join Equinox.

Pros: I come here almost exclusively for the classes. I like that I can just drop in to most classes. So if I arrive late I can just take the next class without any financial penalty. Most of the classes are taught by boutique gym fitness instructors so you still get the Barry s / Peloton / Tone House vibe at a more affordable price point compared to Class Pass.

Cons: Wish it was closer to my apartment. I bike 20 crosstown to get here on the daily.

If i could give a zero star i would. Worst experience ever. They just want your money. I went to this gym just to compare it to Equinox. And in about a week got from them 20 emails and lots of phone calls to get the membership. Got the membership over the phone cuz they couldn t wait till Monday and pretty much asked me to sign up over the phone. My first question was if i could bring a guest, to which the answer was YES! I brought my friend cuz i wanted him to tell me if im doing the exercises correctly, if my posture is good, and while we worked out together he explained couple of my mistakes. The trainers manager CHRIS saw this and he said we cant workout together, we tried to explain him what was happening to which he said you cant workout together END OF CONVERSATION! After my workout i went to a membership adviser JANE and explained her the situation and told her that i get it you cant come with another trainer and train in the gym but my situation was different than that cuz i didnt bring a trainer i came with a friend, she called the other dude whose name i dont know. They blamed everything on me and threatened to cancel my membership. I told them to go ahead and cancel it. Cuz its stupid, i emailed to them and asked JANE couple of times to set up the training session for me, to which there were no answer for 2 weeks and now after i brought a friend that was a problem for them? Is that the customer service for the expensive gym? Thanks to those idiots i decided to get back to Equinox. At least in Equinox they have the best customer service and they re not rude.
