All no parking near the library for students. There are tens of thousands of students but like 100 carpool parking spots and 300 staff parking spots. If you are a single student trying to go to the library too bad so sad there s no parking. You can park on the other side of campus even though there is this massive library with no where to park around it. Classes of the same major are often stacked at the same time so you can t often get into the courses that the advisors recommend. Expect to be extremely flexible with time and money. It s best not to work full time and just to build debt if you go to this school. They are not very flexible. They don t have a good online system built for fully online classes. This school is better for the just out of high school average or struggling student who lives with their parents. If I had to sum up the school in one word I would debate between inefficient, ineffective, and overpopulated.
We went for a walk to the university, campus and library and we loved it. Very good facilities and the library building is very modern and very well prepared for studying.
The place to be for criminology, psychology, business, & masters program. Fresno state offers a class to be a sworn in Reserve Deputy Sheriff (Crim 108). Professors come from all over the world to teach here. Good size campus, lots of opportunities to succeed.
Decent quality of lectures being offered. Library is of great quality and sizeable in the region. Infrastructure (ex. sidewalks, roadways) need some serious repairs. It's becoming commonplace for a person riding a scooter or skateboard to fall because of a lack of smooth & consistent sidewalk/pavement.
This school is great, as you'll read in a minute, but I want to make sure that all bases are covered! So, first of all, it's Fresno. That should be quite a bit of information in and of itself, but for the sake of people who do not know, well, Fresno is sort of this huge city in the middle of a desert. It's blazing hot it the summer time, and, during the hottest days, the air quality is nothing worthy to speak of. There are about a 600,000 people give or take a few, and there is enough to do, but it's nothing particularly special. The crime rate is very high, and there are more than plenty drug dealers. With that said, the school does not have to deal with the crime (save for the petty thefts and stuff that happen anywhere else), it's in a safe area, there's a mall and tons of places to eat nearby, and the campus is nice looking. Recently, the new President of the school has been working at upping the campus's visual appeal, and frankly, he's doing a pretty good job with it. The departments, most notably the business, agriculture, music and engineering departments, are some of the best, if not THE best in the Cal State system. Professors are first rate most of the time, but no school can escape the infamous don't-give-a-damn-about-you professors. Those are the ones that stand out to students and parents searching for a college, but let me tell you, the number of wonderful, caring professors greatly outnumber the ones who couldn't care less. Things are looking up for the school, not only in appeal, but also academically and athletically. There is also plenty of events going on at and around the campus. The college police do their job well, staff is, for the most part, very attentive and helpful, and the facilities, such as the Henry Madden Library, Athletics buildings, football stadium, and Save Mart Center/Rec Center are truly state-of-the-art.
So to recap, the school is safe and well protected; facilities and teaching are top-notch; there is great housing near the school; great departments, like business, music and engineering; there is an awesome sense of school pride, and people, including alumni are extremely proud to be Bulldogs. Do a little more research on the school, and I'm sure you'll want to put Fresno State on your list of colleges to take a look at! Go 'Dogs!
Absolutely reprehensible behavior by Randa Jarrar, including giving out a crisis hotline phone number as her own (committing fraud and flooding the hotline with calls for her and blocking those who needed help). Do not attend or give money to this supposed educational institution. The administration shouldld be ashamed for not firing her.
Graduated from buz school in 2014. Still miss the school and those supportive and kindest folks!!! The greatest in almost everywhere from Library, student support, faculty, location, academics!!!! Worth the time and money!!! Go bulldog!
Some of the highlights of CSU, Fresno campus are the Henry Madden Library and the Rec center. My experience with staff members and professors has also been great! There are plenty of things to do in Fresno you just have to know where to look. Check out River Park Farmers market, Teazers, Tower District, Dog House Grill, Mad Duck, Sam's Italian Deli and several wine/brew fest events in the area. Fresno is roughly 3 hours away from China peak (snowboarding), Pismo Beach, San Francisco, LA beaches, Nappa Valley etc.
Staff while I attended was always supportive & encouraging. Many professors offered to write letters of recommendation once I was starting my career. It's a great university if you're willing to work hard. Professors were very knowledgeable in their specific fields. I felt very prepared.
I've experience the best education out there today. This campus carries so much history and memories. I will surely miss this campus and all of the individuals who got the opportunity to see these grounds!
no one that works there actually wants to do their job, you have to call people/places several times before they decide they want to answer, theres a fee for everything and their websites are all beyond awful. Dont attend
Went there for a football game. Fans were outstanding. I was not rooting for the home team. I only wish that parking took payments and not cash. Who uses cash anymore?
This is where my new life's journey begins! I will earn my Masters, and Doctorates, from Fresno State in Rehabilitation Counseling. Can't wait to see all the exciting things to come as I take that first leap to greatness!
This review applies to the Kremen School of Education's Teaching Credential Program at Fresno State. If I could give this program zero stars I would, as it is a pointless teacher prep program that not only teaches you nothing about how to be a teacher, but there is no accountability of staff or the "mentor teacher" you are assigned to if you have to do student-teaching. I wasted a whole semester doing 'Final Student-Teaching' and had to work with a teacher I was assigned to by the program who over-worked me so much that I didn't have barely enough time to complete my project to get my credential to teach. She was very rude to me, made me literally do her entire job for her, and I ate lunch on rare occasions because she made me work on grading during some lunch periods too. As I am writing this, I completed that semester of student-teaching and my project, but because I didn't accumulate enough "hours" of actual teaching in the classroom because you can't count your 'lunch' recesses, they would not award me a credential. The staff who run the program had no clear vision for me and didn't work with me to offer a solution for adding-in more hours and said that the hours all have to be done in the same semester. If you are looking to earn a Teaching Credential, then PLEASE CONSIDER GOING SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! Upon talking to some of my friends who are teachers, they said this program used to be good, but since they have changed some staff who run the program this has had a negative impact in this programs effectiveness.
I have been attending this university for 1 year now. Pros: clean campus, beautiful library, most professors (I have met so far) are supportive, diverse student population. Cons: vehicle parking can be problematic sometimes(difficult to find available space), campus is clean but some of the buildings are old. For me, the pros outweighs the cons.
Fresno HATE University Liberal Profs now teaching naive Millennial's to assassinate the President of the United States and SHOOT Republican congressmen WHICH someone crazed Liberal did 1 MONTH later ! OH BTY the vast majority of the 1 star reviews are from GEN-X Alumni who graduated with Trent Dilfer when FSU was a very conservative College with 5-10 Christian booths in the Free Speech area. I seriously doubt Alpha Gamma Omega, North Coast Church, Campus Crusade for Christ or Fellowship of Christian Athletes which Trent Dilfer belonged to are allowed on campus anymore. There is NO free speech for Christians or Conservatives, Only God hating liberals. Lets see how long Fresno HATE Univ lasts without GEN-X Alumni donors refusing to send our kids to our Alma Mater. The athletic program has SUCKED for 7 years football team only won a single game 2 seasons ago. I bet many football basketball and track athletes transfer to San Diego state which is a HELL of alot nicer college town and a MUCH BETTER and MORE reputable degree than cow pie town. Fresno State backslash is going to DESTROY the economy of Fresno County.
This university supports hate. I will not allow my children to attend this place because of their protection of tenured professor Randa Jerrar's hateful comments. She should have been fired. What an embarrassment that they stood by her. I will take my hard earned dollars and send my children elsewhere.
Fresno is rather backward town. I'm so thrilled to see a professor breaking the mold. Professor Jarrar s Tweet finally thrusted Fresno State into the real world. Sure the timing wasn't ideal and they are words I wouldn't have said, but that's ok. We need academics with backbone who dare to shatter the status quo. I had to leave Fresno for college to find academics who would be interesting. If there were more professors like Jarrar I would have stayed and obtained my B.A. here in Fresno. But to find a better education I had to move north a few hundred miles.
It's a shame to see President Castro to bend over backwards to sooth the thin skins of Jarrar's antagonists. This is unsettling. This is a university. Professors need to be able to speak out without fear. Bending over backwards to these thick headed people sends the wrong message.
A school that limits free speech breds hate and its students seem to be products of the particpation trophy /tide pod mind set I wouldnt hire a kid who went to school here becuase of their lack of a true education.
I currently finish my freshmen year at Fresno State. Just like any other first time college student; I was nervous. But as I grew familiar to my schedule, my professors, and my classes I came to notice it is a great school. There is ton of help. But you have to look for it; you go find aid for your benefit. I am targeting freshmen college students, that just finish high school. High school was a pie of sweet cake. College is about responsibility and commitment. Overall California State University of Fresno is a great school. I am glad to be part of this grand school.
All students and Professors sign a "Code of Conduct" when attending universities in America . Most include behavior on and off campus. The person that spoke on behalf of Fresno University indicated that the school did not share the same feelings that Professor Jarrar expressed on her personal Twitter account. Regardless Professor Jarrar made national and international news. The world looked into her social media life and found behavior that was unbelievably unprofessional and on some levels out right vile. Universities pride themselves on their "Code of conduct" manuals and the expectations that are placed not just on their students but the administrators as well, to obey those written expectations. I support free speech - whole heartily! However, sometimes - more often than not - words have consequences it was not the one tweet that motivated me to write this review - it was the vile words spoken and displayed on both Facebook and Youtube. America is watching -
i have worked at fsu, tailgated, had my children, my friends and relatives attend classes. i have seen and heard about the poor class structure, communcation between departments and administration. i have heard about physics professors who do a crappy job teaching their students and have i don't care attitudes. i have heard about biology professors who only show up to 1 out of 4 classes and the students basically teach themselves. i think the administration would be and should be ashamed. but they are not. this is because of the overall elitist attitude of the administration, departments and professors. sic sic world we are living in.
I am a military veteran and I have a child at Fresno State. I have been trying to meet with President Castro regarding my son. I cannot get an appointment to see this state employee president. He would not meet with me. Do I have to be a big donor or politician to get a meeting? Castro should be working for the students and ensuring their well being instead of politicking around and ignoring students and parents in regards to their education.
Fresno State has proven, to me, to be a premier provider in education and career building for its current student body. This is not to say that the University can not be improved (infrastructure, department integrity, etc) in various ways. Looking at the Fresno State through the lens of relative value (comparing to the surrounding city, financial predicament, professors, administrative body, tuition cost, etc.) the University is outstanding institution. Working with our Outreach Program, we counsel many students on what they need to do to transfer to Fresno State. It is incredible how many students from other University's come to Fresno State seeking admissions counseling to transfer to Fresno State.
First, I am only giving two stars because I had a decent undergraduate experience at this university. My main review is for the Single Subject Credential Program at Fresno State. This program is extremely terrible and will honestly not prepare you to become a teacher and enter a classroom for the first time. If you are lucky enough to secure an internship by the deadline, then you may have an ok experience, but do not go down the student-teaching route. The mentor teacher that I was assigned to was quite inappropriate with his students and wasn't an effective teacher. Also, he taught me absolutely nothing about how to be a teacher and I basically wasted my time everyday for nothing with him. The only thing I gained through that experience with him was his bad teaching habits and how to be a future incompetent teacher. It is unbelievable how he is still a teacher, even though he has been teaching at a variety of schools in only ten years of teaching. The Credential program doesn't pre-screen the teachers they assign to you and will assign you to any teacher that wants a student-teacher. The main point I am trying to convey here is that if you are looking to become a teacher and earn your credential, then you deserve a better teacher preparation program than the one offered through Fresno State. There are much more affordable options out there and they are much better than this worthless program. If you are reading this, don't take me word for it or my review at face value, bu talk around to people in the community and those that have gone through this program themselves to prove my point. Thank you, Anthony Alves
This is absolutely disgusting. A professor at this school tweeted that she was glad that a former first lady died and that she was looking forward to her entire family dying. The University claims this does not reflect their views, but they did absolutely nothing to discipline her. Professors have been fired for much less so this excuse that the "collective bargaining agreement" prevents them from doing anything is nonsense. Parents, do not send your children to this school for their sake. And donors, send your money elsewhere if you have a sense of decency.
Randa Jarrar should not be allowed to clean bathrooms, let alone educate the students. She may call her rants freedom of speech, but they are highly prejudicial and misguided . FIRE HER.
If you're looking for a college and are considering Fresno State, think again. Look at the 5 star reviews, most of them are from 4 plus years ago. This indoctrination center masquerading as a school has fallen fast and hard from what it used to be.
First of all, Fresno itself is a cesspool. Terrible crime, terrible weather and terrible local government. The college has old, ugly facilities and way too few parking spaces for the student population. If you haven't followed the recent controversies, do so. Insane professors, inept administration and two of the states biggest criminals all call Fresno State home! Groundskeeper's caught on camera showing up late and leaving early, going shopping on the taxpayers dime and then denying it all... administration response? "We'll look into it."
Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere for a college or spend the next few years in Fresno State and see the doors close for you when you start going for job interviews.
Beautiful place physically, but most university people avoid and disrespect you if you don t fully embrace their extreme left views. Avoid at all costs.
Ahh Fresno State where do I start. Average but helpful Professors and exceptional D1 sports like football and baseball and basketball. Large School with small town pride. Nationally underrated agricultural programs as well as construction. 90% of Fresno States students are valley kids. Average sized Greek system that tries to throw parties that the local PD love to shut down. Most students that attend Fresno State are getting the majority of their tuition and new shoes payed for by taxpayer dollars. Pretty badass farmers market, vineyard, orchard and on campus Winery. Buy the Wine and tailgate a football game if your ever driving down the 99.
This used to be a school I respected ever since I was a kid. Now that my wife attends here it has become apparent to me that this school is by far not what it seems. Professors spend most of class time ranting about personal issues instead of teaching. The class availability is ridiculous sometimes there is only one or two classes available and even then one will usually close or drop off leaving students puzzled with nothing but an o well giving from administration. If someone was to spend 6k a semester at my business I would make sure they were taking care of. In my opinion this school has lost its shine now its just another over priced collage full of excuses.
Protecting those 'white trash with money' professors who mock dead people. An Institute of higher learning? No, a machine of liberal hatred and propaganda.
great place to study...did my Bach Science in Electrical Engineering there...great rec centre, library was completed unfortunately after I have graduated.. I met and have awesome friends and great people... helped out with MESA outreach was great experiences...
Fresno State is definitely one of the top institutions in the Cal State system, certainly among the best in the western United States. When you travel outside of the county, most people may only recognize the university's name for its success in sports. The successes the Fresno State Bulldogs have had in Div-I FBS sports have made the university a brand name in the NCAA. Furthermore, the university has a proud and vibrant fan base in all regions of the country, not just in the West. Yet, few seem to emphasize the quality academic experience Fresno State offers. The diverse faculty come from some of the top institutions in the world, with each offering their expertise and knowledge on various fields of study. Fresno State is known for its rehab counseling, business, criminology, psychology, political science/public admin, and agriculture programs among others; it also hosts premier Army and Air Force ROTC programs, both of which have been nationally recognized in recent years. Extensive access to resources, such as the Henry Madden Library and Maddy Institute, is available to students. The diverse student body has access to Greek life, a large number of clubs and organizations, and various facilities that aggrandize their educational experience. Fresno State isn't perfect - since it could certainly make improvements to its infrastructure, administrative staff, and other issue areas - however, as the university becomes much more competitive every year, it places itself in perfect position to ascend to the top of the rankings in both athletic and academic rankings.
Fresno State is one of the main campus in the Central Valley, where varieties of majors and programs are offered for students to seek interest in! Huge campus! Clean and tidy! Spacious! Great architecture! Peaceful! Helpful staffs and professors! Various programs and services! Food services! Library! Recreational Center! Highly recommend attending Fresno State for students seeking a degree! Go Bulldogs!
Reporting the Library Basement Tutoring Department Staff at this campus for harassing and slandering me by opening a false criminal vandalism case against me for destroying their "$600 range (as they claimed) white board out of intent. I never intended to even try to destroy any of their 600dollar claimed white boards at all. Nor did I even come close to ruining their white board in any possible way or condition. All I did was play around with a blue sharpie on the white board by simply writing a short pointless message because I was very bored. Nearly everyone knows that a sharpie writing on any white board can easily be erased without any trace or adverse damage left over by wiping with either hand sanitizer or alcohol, tracing over with standard dry erase markers, and even more ways.
Shortly after the incident they decided to drop the case and not le the false misdemeanor on me because they knew that I could le an even more serious charge on them for wrongful accusations, false reports, and possibly harassment.
Graduated in Philosophy 1974 under Dr J M Smith, Dr ... I was the only Chinese in that dpt and love to be proved wong...anyone? Another favorite professor was also Dr J M Smith, but from Spatial Psychology...
It's is funny to see the 1 start reviews coming from people who don't seem to have a connection as students. I understand parents being concerned but if your child is 18 or over scheduling a meeting with "principal Castro" isn't an option. I earned my degrees at Fresno State and enjoyed being a student there. The environment is relaxed, student assistance is available, and professors, staff, and school population is diverse. My child who is now 15 went to daycare/preschool there and their early education staff is more than qualified. My younger kids are on their second summer of swimming program. The athletes teaching my babies to swim are outstanding; they're qualified, and rather patient considering they are young college students. Are they perfect? Of course not! There are weak links in every organization but I've seen Fresno State address such issues. As a parent and a former student I recommend CSUF to anyone.
This is one of the awesome schools love sports there everytime we go there for a sports game the people are so nice an awesome the school is improving they are bringing a big schools in to play teams from from different conference in sports
Horrible University! Randa Jarrar is the worst professor in the whole world. She is racist, brags about her position and income. That's what Fresno State is all about?! If you are a donor, please, don't. Quit this University.
Fresno State = Family. I'm from SoCal (San Marino), but I was able to settle in pretty good. It's amazing how many countries are represented in the student body; I think someone at ICH told me around 70 countries are represented which is pretty neat! Making friends might be tough for those who aren't from the area so going Greek or joining a club is a must...or you can just live in the dorms or at the Palazzo! ;) The school has pretty nice buildings - the library and the science-2 building are probably the nicest, then the engineering bldg. The bldgs in the quad aren't too great - third floor of Family Food Science is HOT! Jeez. and they look older than the other buildings. They have a big rec center, which is next to the Savemart Center and sort of close to the Palazzo, you have to walk though. Parking sucks during the week. The admin building is so sloooooow. They close really early and they don't send what you need right away even emails. I don't know why a lot of people say Dominguez Hills is the best nursing program in the csu. FS has a really nice program with top experienced teachers. If you want PRACTICAL experience in the field (or any field), go to Fresno State. My profs. are retired nurses with so many connections so if you work hard, you'll definitely find yourself a good connection and be a part of the know. all of the science and engineering programs are top programs. The business program is recognized nationally and is top 50 (according to many sources). social science is good, esp. psychology. Good sports, but its the football team, the women's bball team, and the equestrian (and other not-so popular sports) are the only ones that win games or matches. For the most part, it's a really good school. Everone talks about SDSU and Cal Poly as some of the top csu schools but Fresno State should definitely be in the conversation. Look up who graduated from Fresno State - you'll be impressed by how successful they are. GO DOGS!
While the school is decent itself there are other issues that can pose problems for others. The parking is absolutely terrible. Expect 15+ minutes searching and then another 10+ walking. The campus is huge with no way of getting around quickly so if you have back to back classes you spend your 15 minute break walking to class so you can't eat, study, write down remaining notes from last class. If your professor goes over time you are left rushing. Most professors choose not to work with you or help. If you can't do it when they want you to then you are out of luck. Most professors favor ones who are doing good already and don't want to help struggling students who are asking for the help. If you have a disability a vast majority of the professors make you feel bad about it and a pain to work with. Some will go out of their way to help you as much as they can. Tuition here is absurdly high for no reason. Community college will cost you ~$600 per semester while going here will cost you $3,200. They get a grant to help students get tablets for their classes and instead of letting the students spend it they spend it themselves on loaners which cripple students who find it useful for their other classes and can't afford one do to high school cost already and don't want to go further in debt with loans. They would rather build new buildings than alleviate student parking problems.
